Decades to wait for road worksBY SUE [email protected]

EPPING North residents will bewaiting a long time for major roadimprovements – more than 30 years, according to Roads Minister TerryMulder.

In a letter to Labor’s Yan YeanMLA Danielle Green, Mr Muldergave the date of 2046 as the time-frame for three key projects.

Although Ms Green and regionallobbyists thought the 33-year sched-

ule was a typographical error, a Vic-Roads spokesman confirmed theauthority believed that was the datewhen the projects were needed.

The Epping North projects arethe O’Herns Road–Hume Freewayinterchange to allow traffic to leavethe freeway, the O’Herns Roadduplication and the Edgars Roadextension, which the AuroraCommunity Association has beenlobbying to be built as soon aspossible.

“When we saw the letter and that it

would take another 33 years, wewere shocked,” association presidentToni-Marie Wuelfert said.

“These projects need to happenstraight away.”

Ms Green said the 2046 date was“absolutely laughable”.

“It shows the minister has no ideaabout the growth pressures in thenorth.”

Ms Green said the Liberal stategovernment did not include anynorthern suburbs road projects inits submission to Infrastructure Aus-

tralia, the federal funding agency.‘‘We’re just a black hole,” she said.Mr Mulder’s letter was in reply to

petitions regarding the road worksand other matters raised by Ms Greenin parliament in December.

VicRoads spokesman Travers Pur-ton said that the 2046 start date wascorrect.

“Network modelling suggests thatby 2046 the O’Herns Road inter-change and duplication, and theextension of Edgars Road will berequired,” he said.

In meditative moodIt may not be the rhumba, but this latest dance craze will get you moving. Wu tao is like Chinese tai chi, which is a gentle

and graceful exercise, but is set to music, according to instructor Maria Veerasamy (pictured). “It is a meditative dance.

It is therapy for the physical, mental and spiritual states,” she says. Free wu tao classes are held every Wednesday from

11.30am to 12.30pm at the Peter Lalor Secondary College, 35 Duncan Road, Lalor. Details: call 9217 2357.

Tenants toldto get outLALOR residents fed up with arooming house amid allegations ofviolent clashes have won a reprieve.

The landlord has ordered theprivate company that rents theMonash Street property out withinfour months. He said he sympath-ised with residents who claim to befearful of the tenants, after allega-tions of bad behaviour and policeattendance over about four years.

Frank, who would not give hissurname or name the companyrenting the property, said he hadinstructed his real estate agent toserve the company with an evictionnotice but the company had 120days to get out.

Councillor Kris Pavlidis, whopresented council with a petitionwith dozens of names complainingabout the rooming house, saidcouncil had no control over room-ing houses, except to issue a certific-ate of occupancy and ensure theymeet health standards.

Still time to register forbushfire class actionBLACK Saturday victims have untilMarch 22 to register for a class actionsuing an electricity company for mil-lions of dollars.

The Supreme Court case will start 18days before the registration deadline onMarch 4 and is expected to take almosta year.

Cam Scott, a spokesman for law firmMaurice Blackburn which is taking theaction, said 7500 people had alreadyregistered and he expected the final fig-ure to be more than 10,000.

The firm is suing SP AusNet on behalfof people who suffered injury, loss ordamage as a result of the devastatingKilmore East-Kinglake bushfires onFebruary 7, 2009, which includes King-lake, Kilmore East, Strathewen, SteelsCreek and other towns.

He said the electricity companyclaimed three other state authorities, theDepartment of Sustainability and Envir-onment, Country Fire Authority andstate government had contributed to thefires, and these bodies were also being

sued. The law firm had not put a figureon the compensation claim but it was“substantial” given the loss of life andproperty, Mr Scott said.

Premier Ted Baillieu visited Kinglakelast Tuesday to open an ambulance sta-tion and health centre.

“Rebuilding is about more thanrebuilding physical structures, and wehope that this service will offer a senseof permanence for this community as itcontinues to recover,” he said.

Mr Baillieu said the Kinglake RangesHealth Centre had provided “outstand-ing” support to survivors includingmore than 3000 individual counsellingsessions in the first year after the blaze.

Health Minister David Davis saidparamedics welcomed the new ambu-lance station after using a temporarystation consisting of a shed withexternal toilets and no garage.

The new health centre had a recep-tion, waiting area, information techno-logy infrastructure and storage.

Student supportYoungsters at Bundoora Primary School will learn how to bounce back

from life’s setbacks with the school’s new primary welfare officer.

Alyssa O’Connell, a trained psychologist, will help students build

resilience through the “bounce back” program, as well as look after

their other welfare needs. Principal Lee Pollard says having a welfare

officer will build on the school’s past work of fostering good citizen

attitudes in a school with some children with disabilities. Ms O’Connell

will also help parents manage difficult behaviour at home and survey

parents about their needs.

Cash call forouter councilsBY SUE HEWITT

JOBS, schools, roads and more areneeded as the City of Whittlesea’s pop-ulation explodes, according to a reporton Melbourne’s outer growth areas.

Whittlesea was one of 10 outercouncils that commissioned the reportOne Melbourne or Two, which stated$10 billion needed to be invested inthese areas over the next 15 years orrisk dividing Melbourne into the“haves and have nots”.

Whittlesea’s population of 170,000residents was expected to hit 300,000in 15 years, while the 10 councils thatcommissioned the report were expec-ted to get 650,000 more people in thesame period, according to a Whittleseacouncil spokesman. This created anurgent need for schools, the council’sadvocacy and communications dir-ector Griff Davis said.

He said the council had met Educa-

tion Minister Martin Dixon whoacknowledged the need and said thegovernment was negotiating toacquire sites.

Mr Davis said there was only onejob available for every two job seekersin the outer municipalities of Whittle-sea, Wyndham, Melton, Hume, YarraRanges, Casey, Cardinia, Mitchell,Mornington Peninsula and Nillumbik, compared to one job per unemployedperson elsewhere.

He said inadequate roads meant res-idents in Epping North faced trafficdelays on High Street or Epping Road, taking up to 30 minutes to travel a fewkilometres.

‘‘We have to invest in roads beforeyou can get an effective bus system, orthe buses will be hit by traffic delays,”he said.

“We need a combination of roadand bus improvements and a trainextension to Mernda.”

Lovatt says he hopes the students

will learn from the experience. “Being

boys will learn this and will then

integrate it into their own approach to

The best way to prepare for this fi re season is to stay informed

and plan to leave early, before you see smoke or fi re.

Plan to leave early:

üTalk to everyone you live with so you all know when you’re

going to leave and where you’re going to go if a fi re starts.

üPack a relocation kit with important documents and

essential items.

üOn high-risk days, check Fire Danger Ratings and fi re

warnings on the CFA website and listen to local radio.

Don’t wait and hope for the best. Visit the CFA website to fi nd

out how you can be FireReady.

Leading thinkerstackle hot topicsBY SUE HEWITT

SOME of Australia’s most respectedthinkers will debate the nation’s mostcontroversial issues at a La Trobe Uni-versity conference to mark a leadingacademic’s retirement.

The conference will honour Pro-fessor Robert Manne, a professor ofpolitics. He has chosen multicultural-ism, climate change, asylum seekersand indigenous politics among thetopics for 30 speakers.

Indigenous leader Professor MickDodson will talk about the key ten-sions in Aboriginal politics, the stolengenerations report and other mattersat the “Thinking for yourself” confer-ence.

“Mick Dodson has been at thecentre of political debate and can talknot just from a professional but deeplypersonal perspective about the state ofindigenous politics over the past two

decades or more,” Mr Manne said.“This is a conversation I have longwanted to happen not only because itis vitally important to the maturing ofAustralia but also because it will bewith a leader that I have admired formany years.”

He said a lot had happened in indig-enous politics since the Keating gov-ernment made Mr Dodson a socialjustice commissioner.

Gwenda Tavan, a senior politics lec-turer at La Trobe University and oneof the conference organisers, urgedresidents to attend the two-day eventwith leading social commentators.

The conference will be on February28 and March 1 at the John ScottMeeting House, La Trobe University,Bundoora. Visit latrobe.edu.au/humanities/about/conferences/thinking-for-yourself. To attend, con-tact Bree Ahrens via email at [email protected].

Crystal clear for the new yearThere’s a little more than dusting required for a full moon clean up, according to new age

expert Rebecca Sharkie. Sharkie, of Whittlesea Wellness, says now is the time to clean

out bad energy for the Chinese Year of the Snake. She says crystals should be cleansed

by being left under a full moon on February 26. It’s also a time to set up an altar with

crystals, candles and other objects depending on what you want to achieve. Sharkie will

talk about the Year of the Snake on Wednesday, February 20, from 7pm at Mill Park library,

Voice of hopeMelissa Tumeo is using her singing talent to shine light on a dark disease. By Sue Hewitt

Singer Melissa Tumeo is so softly spoken she almost whispers. Her tone seems apologetic as she tells of

her achievements, including being named Whittlesea’s young citizen of the year. But there are no apologies when she bursts into song with a powerful voice that sets the hairs on your neck on end.

“People tell me I am a lioness; I have a roar,” Tumeo says. And she does; a rich, gutsy and soulful singing voice. But it is what she sings that matters. “I am a compassionate musician, I have a voice, yes, but I also have a message,” she says.

The Thomastown singer-songwriter, musician and musical examiner is committed to raising funds for the Cancer Council. It is a personal commitment for the 24-year-old whose family has been touched by the disease.

“My aunt, Anna, had cancer. She is surviving, but it is a hard, hard road,” Tumeo says.

“It is a terrible disease and it touches many people. I wanted to do something and the best way I could was through my music.”

A year after her aunt was diagnosed in 2009, Tumeo sat crying at her piano and wrote The Long Way, which has featured at the Cancer Council’s Relay for Life events. “A light bulb came on and the lyrics fl owed out and I knew this was the way I could help,” she says.

A self-funded 2011 recording of the song sells for $11 with $1 from each sale donated to the Cancer Council. The lyrics describe the long journey of a cancer sufferer who is supported by their family. “Hand in hand we will take the long way together,” Tumeo sings.

Family has always been important for the singer. The death of her two grandmothers, or nonnas, sparked her singing career.

Tumeo began as a guitarist and

drummer, after tagging along to her two older brothers’ music lessons. But when she was 11 she lost her grandmothers within a short space of time. “I went to my room with my guitar and looked at a picture of them both with their arms linked under the lemon tree, that was stuck to my mirror, and I started to sing,” Tumeo says. “Music was my way of dealing with it [grief], and I felt a whole lot better, it was a healing process.”

She says her grandmothers Rosa Tumeo and Maria Taranto are her “guardian angels” and make her proud of her Italian heritage. “They contributed to who I am today, they give me strength,” she says.

Growing up in the City of Whittlesea, Tumeo attended Thomastown West Primary School and Thomastown Secondary College. “Thomastown is home to me, I grew up in a quiet street and I don’t know anywhere else,” she says.

[ 8 ] NORTHERN WEEKLY – YOUR COMMUNITY VOICE February 19, 2013

Page 9: Northern Weekly

She studied music at the Northern Melbourne Institute of Tafe (NMIT) and is a qualifi ed music teacher and music examiner.

“I am also my own manager and publicist, as well as singing,” Tumeo says. “I have been writing songs for 12 years and have a lot of originals [that I would like to record]. But I am determined to be in the music industry for all the right reasons.

People seek money and fame but I want the lyrical content to be good; to have a message.”

Tumeo has used her music to help various charities including beyondblue and the Make a Wish Foundation. She performed at the 2011 Carols by Candlelight and various opening ceremonies of the Cancer Council’s Relay for Life programs around Melbourne, and will do so again next month.

“After one [Relay for Life] ceremony a man came up and said how he was touched [by the song The Long Way], and that his mother had passed away. It was very emotional, but many people are in similar situations.”

Although the bright lights that follow Tumeo’s musical heroines – big voices like Mariah Carey and the late Whitney Houston – may not yet shine on her, Tumeo hopes her music will illuminate the problems of cancer.

Tumeo has been nominated for the City of Whittlesea’s woman of the year as part of the International Women’s Day celebrations in March. She will perform at the Whittlesea

community festival in the council’s public gardens in Barry Road, Lalor on March 17.

Abbotsford Anglers are not your typical cricket club. For starters, there’s a different captain every week. There’s no fi rsts or seconds team division, players are rotated so everyone gets a fair go and there’s more emphasis on the spectacular lunch spread on game day than there

is on the game result. ‘‘If you’re going to spend a Saturday afternoon in the sun, you need appropriate refreshments’’ says Nick Batzias, one of the club’s founding members.

Case in point, a survey on the Anglers’ Facebook page asked people to nominate not their best player or the club’s most memorable win, but rather the best lunch spread. For the record, fi gs wrapped in prosciutto won over Chinese fi ve-spice quail and the lamb spit roast.

Fun is very much the main game for the Anglers, but it would be a mistake to dismiss the group as idle hedonists. The Anglers have reached the fi nals every year they’ve played and have won fi ve premierships in the Eastern Cricket Association. Plus, they’ve donned the baggy green (well, the baggy blue, gold and burgundy – their club colours) and played international tours in the Caribbean, Sri Lanka, Samoa and India.

A suburban cricket club representing Australia all over the world? Why not, says Batzias. ‘‘We had a hoot. It was one of the best things I’ve ever done,” he says of the 2001 tour that took the team of 20 to big cities and regional outposts, where they played against six clubs from all corners of India – The Streetwise Sachin XI, The Percept XI, The Toyshop XI, Calcutta Tramways, Madras Cricket Club and and Junkyard Dogs – and won just one game.

The unorthodox club’s origins can be traced to well-known bar entrepreneur and sports tragic Hugh Thorn, and a fi shing trip on the banks of the Yarra River in 2000. When Thorn snagged a carp, the idea for a cricket club called the Abbotsford Anglers popped into his head. Over a few drinks with mates later that night, he recruited the fi rst few players and plans were hatched for the club’s fi rst international tour.

The club and that fi rst tour to India are about to be immortalised on the big screen in a new Australian fi lm Save Your Legs. Starring Stephen Curry, Damon Gameau and Brendan Cowell, who also wrote the screenplay, it’s directed by Angler Boyd Hicklin, so it’s a true collaboration between the players and the fi lm industry.

Hicklin, who has a background in fi lm and television, says the idea of taking the club’s unexpected sporting story

to the big screen was an exciting prospect, especially for an avid sports fan like himself. ‘‘I think sports is an everyman format – people can understand things very quickly and the stakes can be exaggerated very quickly,’’ he says, overlooking the pitch in Hawthorn East where the club plays. ‘‘And the passion sports sparks in people, it’s the simplest way to latch onto human dreams.’’

The fi lm is based on Hicklin’s warmly received 2005 documentary of the same name about the club’s Indian tour. Hicklin wasn’t an Anglers player when he began making the documentary, but was roped in to play when some of the players fell ill on the sub-continent. ‘‘He can certainly hold his own in a D-grade team,’’ Batzias says, laughing.

He gets no argument from Hicklin. ‘‘I wasn’t very good but that didn’t matter. I was included with a bunch of people who were up to doing amazing things and one of those things was going to India and treating it like a real sports tour, and considering themselves playing for Australia, if just for a few weeks of their lives.’’

The fi lm draws strongly on the players’ adventures in India, with some creative licence for the sake of dramatic impact. The plot revolves around Edward ‘Teddy’ Brown, played by Curry, who, on realising he and his friends are

getting busier, with less and less time to see each other, suggests a ‘once in a lifetime’ trip to India to remind them of their shared love of cricket.

Curry became involved in the project fi ve years ago when the screenplay was in its infancy and says he relished the opportunity to play the game he loves for work. This was despite his actual skill level, he says. ‘‘If I had to describe my cricket skills, I’d say I’m a stodgy, useless, insipid, lazy, average batsman who thinks he’s a lot better than he actually is. I’d certainly fi t into a few national teams okay,’’ he says. ‘‘I talk a big game. I’m a cricket lover in the same way John Howard is a cricket fan.

‘‘That was one of the good things about this shoot, being able to indulge in our sad passion because we share a great love of the game - under the guise of working.’’

On a sunny day in February, Curry, Batzias and Hicklin gather on the pitch for our photoshoot. There’s a genuine camaraderie among the group, easy laughter and an eagerness to catch up, which they’ll have plenty of opportunity to do as they prepare for a four-city promotional tour this month. ‘‘We’ve been mates for a long time, there’s a lot of chatting, laughing and pointless gas bagging that goes on. But not a lot of work,’’ Curry says.

The actors have even established an honorary team called the Abbotsford Actors to play against the real life counterparts.

When asked why the club chose India for its maiden tour, Batzias says it’s because India at the time was considered the ‘‘fi nal frontier’’ of the game. ‘‘Australia won everywhere but struggled to win in India. And it’s a completely exotic place; for a group of young guys. Asking them to step out of their lives and go to a completely different place for three weeks is pretty exciting.

‘‘People may say Lords in England is the home of cricket, but I think India is the heart. If you go over there and you know something about cricket, you can speak to everyone from the Prime Minister to the street kids,’’ Batzias says.

Next on the club’s travel list is England, although if it’s up to Batzias, the Anglers may head across the Tasman instead. ‘‘I reckon we should go over to beat the Kiwis. Everyone else does,’’ he laughs.

Despite – or because of – its reputation, the Anglers is a growing club. There are about 250 members and two offi cial teams, although the rotation of players is still a fundamental rule. They’ve swapped their home ground from Xavier College’s junior school for Anderson Park in Hawthorn East, and thankfully, Batzias says, the clubrooms have a decent kitchen for the all-important lunch.

The 2012-13 season has been a mixed bag for the club; at the time of going to print they were sitting at number fi ve (out of nine teams) in the McCarthy Shield and number three (out of 10 teams) in the RW Laws Shield.

While immersed in producing and promoting the fi lm, Batzias remains a member of the Anglers, something he says is becoming more important as he and his friends get older. ‘‘Things are getting busier, but when you have something like this it puts into a capsule a time where you just act like you did when you were 16 or 20 years old. It’s not about work. There’s something really nice about that.’’

He has just played his fi rst game for the Anglers in 20 months and is happy to be back on the fi eld, but more importantly close to the lunch table and the beers. He has his priorities sorted, he says.

‘‘We basically maintained our consistent record – had an odd win here and there. Off the fi eld, we always hold our own.’’

SPORT

There are plenty of creeks and rivers in Melbourne’s outer northern suburbs so it’s perhaps not a surprise that Victoria’s

pre-eminent kayakers should hail from the area.

Last month, three young outer northern residents and Ivanhoe Grammar students dominated the 2012 Australian Schools’ Kayaking Championships at Eildon.

James Le Motte and Caleb Sirianni, both 13, and Nima Karimi,12, all took on the swirling rapids and won medals at the championships.

Karimi, who was born in New Zealand to Iranian parents, won gold in a kayak event. He then teamed up with Le Motte, Sirianni and three other paddlers to win the C2 team race, in which three boats of two people must paddle through the course in the quickest time.

Karimi has been paddling for about a year and says the championships are a highlight. “It was pretty good, a lot of my friends got medals, as did I,” he says.

“It felt great and amazing and it was a good

team effort. I like being in the kayak. The K1 race was really hard, trying to get through all the gates on the course.”

Le Motte says the heat made it all the more diffi cult. “It was during that heatwave in Victoria which was sort of unbearable and made it very hard to compete,” he says.

He fi nished second in the solo down river race and teamed up with Sirianni in the team race, which he says was hectic.

“The rapids were fl owing pretty fast,” he says. “One gate everyone capsized in a very rough bit of water that was quite hard to go through.”

Le Motte started paddling in March last year and says canoeing and kayaking has quickly become his favourite sporting pursuit.

“It’s easily my favourite now,” he says. “It’s quite fun and gives you a lot of adrenalin.”

Sirianni also started about the same time after watching a video about the sport at school. He entered in fi ve races at the

championships and says the C2 team slalom race was the highlight.

“We won gold in that,” Sirianni says. “I enjoyed it a lot, getting to go down the rapids and experiencing all the different courses

you’re not really used to. I haven’t done anything like that before.”

All three boys say they will continue to compete in events before turning their focus to Victorian championships later this year. ■

TIMEOUT BY MYKE BARTLETT

FRIGHTENED RABBIT / FOALSPedestrian Verse (Atlantic) / Holy Fire (Transgressive)Details: visit frightenedrabbit.com / foals.co.uk

It’s been a patchy few years for British guitar bands. The spotlight has been hogged by

folkish types, such as the extraordinary Laura Marling, the very ordinary Mumford & Sons and the extraordinarily boring Ed Sheeran. This week, British rock shoulders its way back on

stage. Scottish group Frightened Rabbit is pretty much everything we once expected from British indie. Fuelled by the angst and the heartbreak of a shy white male, their songs have always been slightly shambolic. It wouldn’t be entirely unkind to describe them as an edgier Snow Patrol. Certainly, there’s a similar grandeur to the melancholy of new album Pedestrian Verse. For the fi rst time, the production is strong enough to match the passions on show.

Even better is Holy Fire, the ambitious third album from Oxford group Foals. From the instrumental, vaguely prog-ish Prelude (with its spidery Cure-esque guitars) to the soaring electro-rock of Milk & Black Spiders, this is music built to echo around stadiums. Inhaler is an extraordinary slab of metal-funk, the sort of song likely to turn a festival crowd into a pulsating mass of mosh. Expect to hear a lot more from this group.

MR AND MRS MURDERWhen: Ten, Wednesday February 20, 8.30pmDetails: visit ten.com.au/tvshows/mrandmrsmurder.htm

Ten’s fi rst big Australian drama of the year arrives with more of a pleasant

ripple than a splash. Mr and Mrs Murder is a vaguely offbeat, vaguely comical mystery series in which Shaun Micallef and Kat Stewart play a married couple whose job cleaning crime scenes supports a sideline career as amateur sleuths.

It’s always tricky to fi nd a convincing reason to involve non-detectives in murder mysteries, but the fi rst episode doesn’t try. Investigating is just what our heroes do, by virtue of being the heroes. However, we’re left feeling we’ve missed some crucial part of the drama – the pair’s fi rst case – that would have made sense of the series’ premise.

Still, Stewart and Micallef make a charming, likeable couple. Indeed, they’re so likeable that we can almost forgive the show’s jumps in logic and uneven tone.

BETWEEN THE BAYSWhen: Moorooduc, Saturday February 23Details: visit betweenthebays.com

Mornington Peninsula’s best music festival kicks off this Saturday,

offering the very best in Australian music, food and – perhaps most importantly – wine and beer. Since 2006, the Between the Bays festival has raised money for the local Penbank School and the Wugularr Community School in the Northern Territory. It’s a family-friendly day, with mazes, rides and activities to distract the kids. This year’s acts include Tim Finn, James Reyne and the Hoodoo Gurus. The Gurus remain one of the country’s best live bands, with a superb (yet often overlooked) back catalogue of pop songs.

This harrowing, strangely beautiful French drama is, at its heart, a romance. But unlike other romances, which concern

themselves with the start of love, Amour focuses on its end. When octogenarian Anna has a stroke, her husband Georges is uneasily transformed into her care giver. Caring becomes even harder as a series of further attacks renders Anna mute and insensible.

For an intimate piece (the action is largely confi ned to a Paris fl at), director Michael Haneke’s fi lm feels oddly spacious. Each scene feels drawn out, as if highlighting the silence and the emptiness as Georges fi nds himself increasingly alone.

Yet, paradoxically, the bond between the pair tightens as Anna drifts away. As she becomes more dependent on Georges, he becomes more dependent on her, shunning attempts by others to intervene, until nothing matters but the two of them.

Fuelled by quiet, intense passion, Amour is a profoundly moving fi lm.

The end of the affairThe bond between two octogenarians packs a punch in this Oscar contender

TIMEOUT

When I mentioned to a few people in the offi ce that I was talking to the chef and sommelier of Melbourne’s hottest Thai

restaurant, Chin Chin, about matching wine with spicy food, they all got a crazed look and demanded that I report back post-haste. Chin Chin does that to people.

Unlocking the mystery to matching drinks with spicy Asian food is the subject of Solving the Eternal Chilli Dilemma, a Melbourne Food and Wine Festival masterclass hosted by chef Benjamin Cooper and sommelier and winemaker Neil Prentice.

The key, according to Prentice, is to match hot, spicy food with either tannins or texture. “If you go to any restaurant in Bangkok, the locals are going to be drinking beer and black tea. In essence, it’s all about tannin and bitter,” says Prentice.

Beer, Prentice notes, isn’t always suited to our weather: “Really nice, interesting beer, is good – when it’s in a humid, hot Thai setting. Even a light beer, such as Chang or Singha, can be too much in cold weather such as our winter.”

With variety being the spice of life, plus Melbourne’s fi ckle climate, wine is often a better match. Prentice says textural wines work best and the classic European food and wine matches hold true as a rule of thumb when choosing a wine to drink with spicy fl avours.

“I try to head towards classic European

matches – seafood and riesling, pinot gris and pork, duck and pinot noir,” he says.

“In European gustatory terms, wine is the sweet and the sour in the glass and the savoury’s on the plate. Eastern food turns that on its head – a lot of the time the sweet and sour is on the plate, so you’re really looking at texture and structure, just as much as you’re looking at fl avour. Remember that the wine’s not supposed to be the main voice on the table, it should be secondary.”

Good textural wines to match include off-dry riesling, which doesn’t tend to fi ght with food and has a hint of sweetness that gets balanced out by vibrant acid. Pinot gris, with its voluptuous texture and subtle apple and pear notes works well too.

“Pinot noir tends not to fi ght with spice too much. It’s a wine that’s really about texture, too,” says Prentice.

As for sweet dishes, Prentice says sweet whites, such as moscato and cane-cut sticky wines, rather than sweeter botrytis styles, work best. ■

Hot food, cool drinksBen Thomas heads to Chin Chin to fi nd the perfect match for spicy food

★★★★Pewsey Vale Riesling 2012(Eden Valley) $22.95; 12.5%

Just a smell of this wine will take you back to your grandmother’s trousseau, with lily of the valley and talcum powder aromas that mix nicely with citrus and tropical fruit notes that carry on to the bright, intense palate. Structured, smooth and grippy, this starts out soft and rounded on the tongue, before building up power to an intense citrus, quince and green-apple fi nish. Last year was an excellent riesling vintage and this can be found cheap at the chains, too.Food match Jungle curry

MOTORING

Things you didn’t know about motoring

In car crashes obese people are 80 per

cent more likely to die than slim people.

There’s a pregnancy in our extended family which means that inordinate interest is being shown in yummy

mummy cars. And as far as these go, Honda’s CRV pretty much wrote the book.

While the rapidly rounding one loves the high driving position, the visibility and the parking sensors, not to mention the back-up camera, it’s the rear seats that won her over.

They can be folded down from the cargo area. Open the cargo door and you’ll discover a couple of levers. Pull the one on the right and the rear seat on the right side folds. Pull the one on the left for the left.

Nothing unusual there, but what makes the CRV special is that the seats don’t just fold, they also tumble. The cushion comes up and forward and the backrest sinks into the space it leaves.

The resulting load fl oor isn’t quite fl at but it’s close enough.

She loves the convenience of this

and is sold, no matter that I have pointed out what I consider to be the CRV’s shortcomings.

The electronics for example. The navigation screen is small and the mappingis dreadful. All the controls are a bit odd. The bar graph showing the audio volume reaches its upper limit when the indicator registers 40 units, yet the volume keeps rising to 63.

But there’s a bigger problem with adjusting the volume. The radio controls are probably the most used in the average car and here they are all small buttons lined up so closely it’s easy to get the wrong one when the car is moving. The best and safest volume controls are a big rotary knob you can grab and hang onto, but here the volume is controlled by a rocker switch – left for down, right for up.This would be a daily annoyance for me. The only rotary controls in here are for cabin temperature.

Otherwise, no complaints. Lots of roomgood seating and plenty of get up and go, something you pay for in heavier than normal fuel usage.

The ride is good, and handling adequatebut hardly inspiring. There’s a fair amountof bodyroll through twisty bits and the steering can get a bit vague in such conditions too, but this is bloke stuff and of little consequence to mums and mums-to-be. They can feel safe and warm about the full-size spare on a matching alloy wheel though. Such an increasingly rare commodity these days.

Great all rounderElectronics aside, Honda’s CRV may just be the ideal family car

ROD EASDOWNBEHIND THE WHEEL

HONDA CRV VTiLWhat is it? Top of the range family

friendly SUV.

What’s in it? A 140-kilowatt 2.4 litre

with a fi ve-speed auto.

Is it thirsty? I used 12 litres per 100

kilometres in the city, 6.5 in the country.

The offi cial combined fi gure is 6.7.

Drive away Approximately $46,500.

Thumbs up Space, comfort, a clever

rear seat and a full size spare.

Thumbs down It’s on the thirsty side

and has crummy dash controls.

February 19, 2013 NORTHERN WEEKLY – YOUR COMMUNITY VOICE [ 17 ]

Page 18: Northern Weekly

This two-year-old property would fi t in just as well along Beach Road, Brighton, as it does on this hillside in South Morang’s

prestigious Waterstone Hill estate. Eyecatching with its sharp, square shapes

and expanses of glass, the house towers above its neighbours only one block back from a hilltop reserve dotted with age-old river gums and resident kangaroos.

It clearly draws its inspiration from the modern mansions that line Melbourne’s blue chip bayside boroughs. But instead of views of the Brighton foreshore, this property’s outlook takes in the Dandenong Ranges in the distance. These impressive views fi ll almost every room of the house, and compete for attention with the light-fi lled and luxurious living spaces.

The property is big on fi rst impressions. The stairs up to the entrance are crowned by a modern, timber-lined eave that juts out from the imposing block-like facade. Once inside, it’s the central stairwell that impresses.

This feature is both the structural core and aesthetic champion of the property. The timber stairs – all treads and no risers – snake up to the top fl oor and down to the basement within a glass frame at the centre of the fl oor plan. It is almost commercial in scale, yet retains all the elegance of modern design.

This central fl oor is all about living space. There are two rooms fl anking the entrance; a lounge – which is the fi rst space with those mountain views – and the home cinema, which is fi tted with a large screen and projector. A long window running beneath the screen ensures this space is not without natural light.

Tucked behind the stairwell is the home

offi ce. It is a private and quiet place to bury yourself in work or study. With a full bathroom nearby, this room could also double as accommodation, particularly for elderly, live-in relatives.

Like the bathroom, the laundry has CaesarStone benches, which demonstrates just what lengths the owner-builders went to make this house king of Waterstone Hill.

Family and friends come together in the nearby living hub which impresses instantly with soaring fi ve-metre ceilings above the sitting area. The kitchen comes in a close second. It has a vast stone breakfast bar with waterfall edging, sleek white cupboards, black glass splashback, stainless steel Miele appliances and a walk-in pantry.

Bi-fold doors open up to the covered outdoor entertainment area, again with stylish timber lined ceilings. It overlooks a low-

maintenance garden comprising two tiers of lawn and walled garden beds planted with young Japanese maples. There is enough room out here should the next owner want to put in a pool. There is also scope to add in a second kitchen down in the basement storage area off the double garage.

The top fl oor is all about accommodation. Not just any accommodation, we’re talking fi ve-star at this property. A large retreat area occupies the mezzanine suspended above the living room below. The kids can choose from three bedrooms, each with built-in wardrobes, and share a bathroom with twin vanities, freestanding bath and separate toilet.

The parents enjoy the luxury of their own en suite. In here, the vanities conceal the toilet on one side and the double shower on the other; just another example of South Morang’s fi nest in contemporary design.

King of the hillModern styling and mountain views make for an impressive package
