Dr. James Votruba became Northern Kentucky University’s fourth president on August 1, 1997. His role as NKU’s president includes full authority over the administration of the academic, business and fiscal operations of this public, four-year institution which has an enrollment of more than 15,000 students.

In 2002, Dr. Votruba chaired the American Association of State Colleges and Universities’ National Task Force on Public Engagement, and he serves as a faculty member in the AASCU New President’s Academy. In 2004, he delivered the annual AASCU President-to-Presidents Lecture entitled “Leading the Engaged University.”

Dr. Votruba is Secretary-Treasurer of the AASCU Board of Directors and is currently President of the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities. He serves on a variety of boards including the National Campus Compact Board of Directors, the Association of Governing Board’s Council of Presidents, and the Board of Directors of the Ohio National Mutual Holding

Company.

Prior to accepting his position at NKU, Dr. Votruba had been vice provost for University Outreach and Michigan State University since 1989. Dr. Votruba’s senior executive position at Michigan State was created in 1989 to oversee all aspects of the University’s academic outreach mission which involves extending and applying for research, teaching and professional expertise of the faculty for the direct benefit of external audiences. He had responsibility for 14 colleges, more than 100 academic departments, more than 100 centers and institutes, and the Michigan Extension Service. He oversaw a $64 million annual budget which included the administration of several campus-wide competitive grant programs.

Dr. Votruba also was the director of Michigan State’s W.K. Kellogg Foundation Lifelong Education Grant from 1989-95. This $10.2 million project was designed to expand public access to the University’s scholarly expertise by more fully integrating academic outreach as a core mission at the college and department level.

He was also a professor of Higher and Adult Education at Michigan State.

Prior to his tenure at Michigan State, Dr. Votruba was the interim provost and vice president for Academic Affairs (1988-89) and deal of the School of Education and Human Development (1983-88) at the State University of New York at Binghamton. SUNY-Binghamton, with an enrollment of 12,000, in national recognized for its commitment to undergraduate education and research excellence.

Prior to SUNY-Binghamton, he held several positions at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, including head of the Division of Extramural Courses, Office of Continuing Education and Public Service and associate director of the Office of Continuing Education and Public Service.

Dr. Votruba earned his bachelor’s degree in political science in 1968 from Michigan State. He also received his master’s degree in interdisciplinary social science and a doctorate in higher education administration at Michigan State.

Dr. Votruba’s wife, Rachel, is actively involved in several community-based non-profit organizations. Their family includes three children and five grandsons.

Dr. Scott EatonOn July 27, 2009, Dr. Scott Eaton was named Athletic Director

at Northern Kentucky University.

Eaton has worked at NKU as an administrator since 1998, and most recently served as the senior associate athletic director for administration. During his career at NKU, Eaton has played key roles in the academic, compliance, budget, event management and facility areas. He also served as NKU’s interim assistant vice president for student affairs from 2007-08.

Prior to NKU, Eaton worked at Brown University in Providence, R.I., as special assistant to the athletic director and assistant men’s basketball coach. Eaton graduated from Bowdoin College in 1986 after participating in basketball, lacrosse, cross country and track.

He later earned master’s degrees from both Fitchburg State College and Springfield College before receiving his doctorate from Boston University.

Eaton replaces Jane Meier as NKU’s athletic director. Meier announced her resignation in April after spending 21 years as NKU’s athletic director.

“I am both honored and excited about the opportunity that Dr. Votruba and Dr. Davenport have presented to me, knowing that it is a monumental task to try to match the legacy that Jane Meier leaves behind,” Eaton said. “While this marks the end of an incredible era, it provides us an opportunity for a new beginning for NKU athletics.”

“The standards of excellence and the core values that have guided NKU to both local and national success, and respect as an institution, will remain the same,” Eaton added. “Those values will guide our athletic department into the future, where we intend to further that success, excellence, and growth in the classroom and on the playing field.”

NKU Soccer Stadium

The primary mission of NKU’s intercollegiate athletics program is to provide a natural extension of secondary school programs, offering skilled student-athletes the opportunity to continue their educational and athletic experiences beyond high school. Though NKU’s athletic teams continue to post impressive achievements in the classroom and in athletic competitions, its facilities do not match the same standards of quality.

To position the university at the top of NCAA Division II, NKU has begun to implement a plan to improve and build intercollegiate athletics facilities.

The first phase of the plan was completed in the Spring of 2007 when the Joyce Yeager Tennis Complex opened, bringing the NKU men’s and women’s tennis teams back on campus and providing the campus community with a first-class outdoor tennis facility.

On November 8, 2008, the NKU men’s and women’s basketball teams hosted the University of Louisville to open The Bank of Kentucky Center, a $68.5 million, 9,200-seat multipurpose facility that will serve the NKU athletics teams as well as the surrounding community.

The next phase of the plan is now underway, as NKU opens the $6.5 million NKU Soccer Stadium adjacent to The

Bank of Kentucky Center, ending a 10-year period of Norse soccer playing off-campus in Wilder, Ky.

The facility includes seating for 1,000 spectators and an artificial playing surface with World Cup dimensions (120 yards by 80 yards). Other amenities include concessions and restroom facilities, three team locker rooms, a press box and media work area, full athletic training facilities, laundry and equipment storage, and coaches’ offices.

Also included in the stadium is the Founders’ Room, a VIP suite and meeting area directly over midfield that offers a great place for meetings and get-togethers on game days or anytime. The enclosed room includes an outdoor patio with excellent sightlines to the action on the field.

Construction on the new NKU soccer stadium began in Fall 2008 and the NKU soccer programs took occupancy in the building in early July. The Norse soccer teams played the first games on the new field during the 2009 season against Missouri-St. Louis.

The NKU Soccer Stadium will officially open on Sept. 3 when the Norse host Findlay to open the 2010 season. The dedication ceremony will take place on Sept. 19 when the Norse take on Ashland.

Benefits of the new NKU Soccer Stadium to the campus and

community:

This will attract visitors who will benefit the area financially, bring prospective students to the campus.

• Provides lighted facilities with adequate seating and crowd control that permits Northern Kentucky University to increase the number of games held at convenient times for spectators, and allow facility use over a greater period of time by youth, high school teams, and community teams, thus giving the intercollegiate athletics program additional exposure and financial benefits.

Bob SheehanBob Sheehan is in his 14th year as the only women’s soccer head coach in

Northern Kentucky University history. Sheehan has built the NKU women’s soccer program from scratch into one of the nation’s best, and he is 236-51-16 in those 13 seasons with the Norse. Sheehan’s teams have captured an unprecedented seven Great Lakes Valley Conference championships.

Last season, Sheehan led the Norse to a 17-2-2 record, including a 13-1 GLVC record. The Norse set a new standard for defense, allowing just seven goals on the year. NKU advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the third straight season, falling to Wisconsin-Parkside on penalty kicks in the regional semifinals.

In 2009, the Norse took the GLVC title with a 19-2-1 mark and a 13-2 record in conference play. NKU advanced to the Midwest Region final and played eventual national champion Grand Valley State to a scoreless draw before falling in penalty kicks,5-4. For the second straight season the Norse were perfect at home, running that winning streak to 20 games.

In 2008, Sheehan’s Norse amassed a 16-4 record and returned to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in three years, advancing to the second round before being ousted by Wisconsin-Parkside, who accounted for three of NKU’s four defeats on the year. Sheehan also produced his first All-American since 2005 in Brandi Doss, who ranked second in the nation with 0.75 assists per game.

In 2007, Sheehan led the Norse to a 12-6 record and their 10th consecutive trip to the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament. Under Sheehan’s direction the Norse captured the GLVC title in six of their first 10 seasons, including a string of five straight from 1998-2002.

Five years ago, Sheehan guided NKU to a 13-4-1 record and a berth in the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament.

Sheehan was named GLVC Coach of the Year for the sixth time in his career in 2005, and he also earned Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year honors after leading NKU to its seventh consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament.

In addition, NKU senior forward Kristen Votapek was named to the NSCAA’s NCAA Division II All-America second team. Votapek also was named GLVC Player of the Year and earned Scholar All-America honors.

In 2004, Sheehan led NKU to a 15-5-1 overall record. The Norse also advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament for the sixth straight year and finished with a No. 21 national ranking in the Division II poll.

Six years ago, Sheehan guided the Norse to a 17-3-4 record. NKU also earned its fifth straight NCAA Division II Tournament berth and advanced to the national quarterfinals. The Norse finished with a No. 8 national ranking in the NCAA Division II poll.

Seven seasons ago, Sheehan led NKU to a 20-1-2 record and its fifth consecutive Great Lakes Valley Conference championship. The Norse also advanced to the NCAA Division II quarterfinals and spent most of the season ranked No. 1 nationally in the NCAA Division II poll.

Eight years ago, Sheehan guided NKU to a 22-2 record. The Norse also advanced to the NCAA Division II Final Four for the third straight year. During the regular season, NKU jumped to No. 1 in the national poll for the first time in history.

In 2000, Sheehan led NKU to a 21-2-2 record and guided the Norse to the championship match of the NCAA Division II Tournament. The Norse finished as national runner-up and were ranked No. 2 nationally in the final NSCAA coaches poll.

Prior to taking the NKU job, Sheehan spent 13 years as head coach at St. Ursula Academy in Cincinnati and built one of Ohio’s top prep powerhouses in girls’ soccer.

Sheehan, who owned a career record of 195-48-28 at St. Ursula, won a pair of state championships (1991 and 1993), and his teams compiled a record of 106-8-13 during his last six years.

A 1984 graduate of Xavier University, Sheehan was named Girls’ Greater Cincinnati League Gray Division Coach of the Year seven times in his career while at St. Ursula.

Sheehan also earned his MBA in finance from Xavier. Sheehan and his wife, Kelly, have a daughter (Maggie) and a son (John Patrick). The Sheehans live in Cincinnati.

SOMERS, Wis. – The women’s soccer showdown between Northern Kentucky University and Wisconsin-Parkside lived up to expectations Friday, and the Rangers pulled out a 2-1 overtime victory against the visiting Norse in a battle of nationally ranked teams.

Shannon Becker’s goal in the 99th minute gave Wisconsin-Parkside the victory. Wisconsin-Parkside, which is ranked No. 22 in the NCAA Division II national poll, improved to 6-1 overall, 6-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Rangers also extended their winning streak to six games.

ST. LOUIS – Taylor Jennings scored an unassisted goal in the 73rd minute to give the Northern Kentucky University women’s soccer team a 1-0 victory against Missouri-St. Louis on Friday night.

Rachael Wood recorded her 11th shutout of the season and had one save as NKU extended its winning streak to eight and improved to 13-1-1 overall, 12-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Norse are ranked 20th nationally in the latest NCAA Division II poll and No. 3 in the Midwest Region.

Jennings, a freshman from Reynoldsburg, Ohio, started the winning play by stealing a Missouri-St. Louis pass in the backfield. She finished by sending a shot into the net for her first goal of the season, and the NKU defense held off the Tritons to notch the road win.

Missouri-St. Louis dropped to 7-6-2 overall, 5-6-2 in the GLVC. NKU is now 18-2 in the all-time series against Missouri-St. Louis.

NKU concludes the road trip Sunday with a contest at Maryville. The Norse will then host a first-round GLVC Tournament contest Oct. 31 at noon against an opponent that will be determined after Sunday’s games.

NKU is now in sole possession of first place in the GLVC standings after Wisconsin-Parkside lost at Drury on Friday night.

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Danielle Hogue scored one goal and assisted on another to lead the Northern Kentucky University women’s soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Drury in the quarterfinal round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament on Sunday.

With the win, the top-seeded Norse improved to 15-1-1 on the season and advanced to the GLVC semifinals to take on Bellarmine, which defeated Southern Indiana in quarterfinal action. The semifinals and championship game will be hosted by NKU on Nov. 5-7.

Hogue got the scoring started early for the Norse, notching her third goal of the season in the fourth minute of the game. Laura Painter’s corner kick sailed to the back post, where Amanda Mason headed the ball to Hogue at the goal mouth for the game-winner.

Hogue’s tenacity helped NKU to its second goal as well in the 10th minute. Hogue picked up the ball in her own half from a Drury defender and fed Hannah Wissel with a through pass. Wissel took the ball to the end line and crossed it for Taylor Jennings, who scored her second marker of the season to give the Norse the insurance goal.

The NKU defense had another solid outing as well, holding Drury to 10 shots on the game. Goalkeeper Rachael Wood made two saves to earn her 14th shutout of the season.

Drury ended its season with an 8-9-2 record.

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Second-half goals from Hannah Wissel and Amanda Mason led the Northern Kentucky University women’s soccer team to a 2-0 victory in Friday’s semifinal contest in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament.

The victory sends NKU (16-1-1) into the GLVC Tournament championship game for the second consecutive season. The Norse will take on Wisconsin-Parkside, which defeated Quincy, 1-0, in the day’s first semifinal. The Rangers account for NKU’s only loss on the season, a 2-1 overtime decision at Kenosha, Wis.

Bellarmine controlled the pace of play for the first 45 minutes of the game, outshooting the Norse 8-1 in the first half. The Knights (11-5-2) appeared to be on the same path in the second half before Wissel got the Norse on the board in the 68th minute, finishing a Kristi Hofmeyer cross to tally her first goal of the season.

Mason added her 16th goal of the season in the 88th minute off a Megan Frye corner kick to put the icing on the cake. Mason’s goal pulled her into a share for the GLVC lead with Wisconsin-Parkside’s Shannon Becker.

NKU goalkeeper Rachael Wood had another strong showing, making four saves to notch her 14th shutout of the season and the team’s 16th clean sheet in 18 games. NKU has the No. 1 rated defense in all of Division II, entering the weekend with a 0.161 goals allowed average.

Last season, NKU defeated Quincy, 1-0, to take its unprecedented seventh GLVC championship.

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Caitlin Moon tapped in a shot at the 87:19 mark to give Wisconsin-Parkside a 3-2 victory against Northern Kentucky University in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament championship game Sunday.

With less than three minutes left in regulation, NKU goalie Rachael Wood mishandled the ball after making a diving stop of a Wisconsin-Parkside attempt, giving Moon an open shot from just in front of the net. She finished with her first goal of the season to give the Rangers a 3-2 lead with 2:41 remaining in the contest, and 17th-ranked Wisconsin-Parkside (16-2-1) held on to win the GLVC title.

The loss snapped NKU’s winning streak at 11 and prevented the Norse (16-2-1) from repeating as GLVC Tournament champions. NKU’s other loss this season also came to Wisconsin-Parkside, a 2-1 overtime setback on Sept. 24 at Somers, Wis.

With just more than 12 minutes remaining, NKU appeared to be on its way to repeating as GLVC champions. The Norse owned a 2-1 lead and had controlled play much of the contest, but Wisconsin-Parkside evened the score at the 77:52 mark when Stephanie Barsuli sent a 12-yard shot into the back of the net.

Megan Frye and Amanda Mason scored first-half goals as NKU took a 2-1 advantage at intermission. Frye struck in the opening minutes of play (3:45 mark) by finishing off a cross from Hannah Wissel that was set up by a pass from Mason. It was Frye’s sixth goal of the season.

Wisconsin-Parkside tied the score at 1-all six minutes later when Natalie Brown netted a goal after a scramble in the box. Mason, however, countered at the 29:16 mark with her 17th goal of the season with a shot that was assisted by Allison Ponzer.

NKU, which is ranked No. 5 nationally in the NCAA Division II poll, finished with a 13-7 advantage in shot attempts. The Norse also owned an 8-7 edge in corner kicks.

SOMERS, Wis. – Another showdown looms between Northern Kentucky University and Wisconsin-Parkside in women’s soccer on Sunday afternoon, and the stakes will be much higher as this meeting takes place in the NCAA Division II Tournament.

After defeating Northern Michigan by a 4-0 score in the first round of the NCAA Division II Tournament on Friday at Wood Road Field, NKU can devote its full attention to Wisconsin-Parkside. Amanda Mason scored a goal and added an assist for the Norse, who improved to 17-2-1 by knocking off Northern Michigan.

NKU, which is ranked 16th nationally in the NCAA Division II poll, now gets another shot at No. 15 Wisconsin-Parkside at 2:30 p.m. (Eastern time) Sunday in the second round of the Midwest Regional. The Norse have dropped a pair of one-goal decisions to the Rangers this season, including a 3-2 heartbreaker in last week’s Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament championship game.

Earlier this season, Wisconsin-Parkside also pulled out a 2-1 overtime decision against NKU at Wood Road Field.

NKU tallied four goals in the second half Friday afternoon to eliminate Northern Michigan (9-6-5), which was making its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Norse completely dominated play in the first half, holding an 18-2 advantage in shots, but NKU had to settle for a scoreless tie at the break.

Hannah Wissel put NKU on the board just 14 seconds into the second half with her second goal of the season off an assist from Mason. The Norse extended their advantage to 2-0 at the 65:19 mark when Mason netted her 18th goal of the season. Kristi Hofmeyer was credited with the assist on Mason’s goal.

Hannah Adams made it 3-0 four minutes later by collecting her first goal of the season after a Laura Painter corner kick. Danielle Hogue capped the scoring in the 80th minute with her fourth goal of the season. The Norse finished with a whopping 25-8 advantage in shots.

NKU owns a 10-8-2 edge in the all-time series against Wisconsin-Parkside. NKU has not defeated Wisconsin-Parkside on the road since Oct. 5, 2001, when the Norse posted a 3-0 win against the Rangers at Wood Road Field.

SOMERS, Wis. – The Northern Kentucky University women’s soccer team watched its season end in a penalty-kick shootout against Wisconsin-Parkside in the second round of the NCAA Division II Tournament on Sunday.

NKU (17-2-2) and Wisconsin-Parkside (16-2-2) played to a 1-1 tie, but the Rangers advanced to the regional championship game after taking the penalty-kick shootout by a 4-2 score. It marked the second straight season that NKU was eliminated from the NCAA Tournament in a penalty-kick shootout.

A year ago in the regional championship contest, Grand Valley State advanced on penalty kicks by a 5-4 margin after playing NKU to a scoreless tie at Denver, Colo.

NKU wasted no time in taking the lead Sunday afternoon as Amanda Mason netted her 19th goal of the season just 2:59 into the game off an assist from Megan Smith. Wisconsin-Parkside tied the score at 1-all at the 34:33 mark when Megan Owens found the back of the net off an assist by Crystal Chalery.

Neither team could find the net during the second half or in two overtime periods of a very physical game, forcing penalty kicks to decide which squad would advance to meet Grand Valley State in the regional championship game. Kristi Hofmeyer and Megan Smith both converted penalty kicks in the shootout for NKU, but Wisconsin-Parkside advanced by making four to advance.

Wisconsin-Parkside finished with an 11-7 edge in shots and an 8-7 advantage in corner kicks. NKU entered Sunday ranked 16th nationally in the NCAA Division II poll, while Wisconsin-Parkside is 15th in the poll.

NKU dropped a pair of one-goal decisions to the Rangers earlier this season, including a 3-2 heartbreaker in last week’s Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament championship game. On Sept. 24, Wisconsin-Parkside also pulled out a 2-1 overtime decision against NKU at Wood Road Field.

* With much of the team’s core returning, expectations were high for the Norse in 2001, and the team did not disappoint, winning its first 17 matches, and 10 of those by four or more goals. The Norse were again perfect in GLVC play and easily swept through the GLVC Tournament, outscoring the opposition by a combined 13-0 margin in the two contests.

* Betsy Moore closed out her career with her second GLVC Player of the Year nod and her third first-team All-American honor. Six other Norse - Amanda Trout, Tricia Ruark, Lori Kevill, Jeanna Martin, Bessie Black and Eva Broeg - were also honored on the All-GLVC and All-Great Lakes Region teams. Ruark also earned a spot on the All-America first team.

* With two of the most potent offensive threats in NKU history gone, the Norse would have to look elsewhere for success. Fortunately, they did not have to look far, as the Norse continued their stellar defensive play and rattled off a 22-game unbeaten streak spanning the entire regular season and into postseason play.

* NKU’s only loss came in the NCAA quarterfinals to an unbeaten Nebraska-Omaha squad, as NKU fell on home turf, 1-0, to end the season.

* The Norse celebrated their second NSCAA Team Academic Award, having won their first during the 2000 season. The award requires the team to have a minimum 3.0 GPA.

* Hope Bushelman, a defensive-minded midfielder, was honored as the GLVC Player of the Year, while Buschelman, Becky Schneiders, Stephanie Sandfoss and Kristen Noakes were named to the All-Great Lakes Region team.

* NKU’s 73-match conference unbeaten streak ended on Sept. 26, as SIU Ed-wardsville claimed a 2-0 victory over the Norse. The defeat was motivating, however, as NKU would close out the regular season on a 7-0-1 tear.

* NKU would not see the promised land of a GLVC title, however, as Wiscon-sin-Parkside again was victorious in the championship game by a 1-0 score.

* NKU would claim the first of its four NSCAA Team Ethics awards. The award is given to teams that receive 10 or fewer yellow cards and no red cards in a season.

* The Norse put five players on the All-GLVC team: Robyn Withers, Amy Law, Kristen Votapek, Amy Martini and Lauren Piening.
