Membership: The Lifeblood of Our Association – Recruit Just One!When we talk about membership we talk about numbers. How many members do we have? How many active members are there? How many do we have versus another HBA? We want you to know that membership is more than a number. Do you only do business with a member of the HBA? I do. Membership is the lifeblood of our association. Remember to only do business with a member of the HBA and encourage all of your business associates to do the exact same. Here’s why…

Without members there wouldn’t be any advocacy. As a result the cost of doing business in Northern Kentucky would skyrocket for our industry. Regulations would be far more oppressive than they are today. The economy would fall apart.

Without members we wouldn’t be politically active. Legislators, Mayors, County Judges/Executive, and Commissioners would care not about your industry. Laws would be created that would increase the cost to your business astronomically. Cities and Counties would turn a blind eye to the benefits that housing brings their governments. Housing is where jobs go when they are off the clock.

Without members we couldn’t educate. There would be no trade school at the HBA, training hundreds of today’s and tomorrow’s skilled trades people so that we can develop our workforce. There wouldn’t be the ability to educate the members about the latest business practices, how to estimate, how to sell, how to run a successful business.

Without members we couldn’t communicate. We wouldn’t be able to tell your story to the public and the story of our active members to the membership at large. There would be no message about the importance of construction, how it is a noble and worthwhile profession, how we need more workers today, how regulations and business unfriendly laws hurt you and those in your industry, how the association can provide opportunities to grow your business, make new business contacts and friends.

Without members we couldn’t connect you with your customers. There would be no HomeFest, no Cavalcade of Homes and no Tour of Remodeled Homes. There wouldn’t be any opportunity in Northern Kentucky to find a distilled audience of homebuyers, remodeling clients and home improvement enthusiasts. There would be no business to business events such as Table Top Night, the Golf Outing, Associates Outing, Economic Updates, Mix & Mingles, Sales Seminars, and on and on.

Without members there would be no cost savings in workers compensation insurance, avoidance of Obamacare, GMC savings, Verizon discounts, office supplies, shipping savings and on and on.

Without membership none of this is possible for membership is the foundation, the bedrock and the lifeblood of our industry. May and October are our membership drive months. We ask that every member recruit a member. Imagine what services we could offer you, the opportunities to grow your business, protect you from regulations, encourage smart laws and discourage poor laws, grow our workforce to meet the needs of today’s and tomorrow’s construction industry, new and exciting consumer shows, a greater public message, a more commanding seat at the table to represent you.

To download a membership application go to www.hbanky.com/membership. Remember if every member recruits one new member you will see the rewards quickly. Sure there’s fun chances to win prizes and cash for recruiting members but that’s not the true meaning of membership. The true meaning of membership is the possibilities we can all achieve to serve you better and grow your business. To do that we need members… the lifeblood of our association. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Brian A. MillerExecutive Vice PresidentHome Builders Association of Northern Kentucky

Political Housing Club Supports Candidates for May 20th Primary Election

The voting members of the Political Housing Club of Northern Kentucky interviewed 26 candidates running for

public office. The candidates they interviewed ranged from statewide office seekers to local Mayor and County Attorney contenders. Prior to the interviews candidates submitted questionnaires that addressed serious issues facing your industry. These questionnaires were reviewed by the voting members of the PAC. The committee did not interview candidates that have a challenger in the general election in most cases but will do so after the voters in the primary elections decide the outcome of those races. The interviews lasted over two days. In a follow-up meeting that same week the voting members of

the committee decided to support the candidates to the right.

Please consider voting for these individuals in the primary election on May 20th. These candidates have been thoroughly vetted by the voting members of the PAC and are believed to be the best choices for your industry in Northern Kentucky. Also, remember that not all candidates in all races were interviewed as those with opposition in the general election will be interviewed after the primary election. Many thanks go out to the many individuals who have been involved in our PAC fundraising, interviews, and political action. Your industry is far stronger with you involved.

PAC Supports the following candidates:Brandon Voelker, Kentucky Senate 24Addia Wuchner, Kentucky Representative 66Dennis Keene, Kentucky Representative 67John Schickel, Kentucky Senate 11Steve Arlinghaus, Kenton County Judge ExecutiveKris Knochelman, Kenton County Judge ExecutiveDan Bell, Kenton County CommissionerJon Draud, Kenton County CommissionerJoe Nienaber, Kenton County CommissionerGary Moore, Boone County Judge ExecutiveAdam Chaney, Boone County CommissionerCharlie Walton, Boone County CommissionerMike Little, Independence Mayor

Environmental Expert Informs Land Development Council

On April 16th Scott Smith, Smith Management Group, gave the Land Development Council an update on the State of Stormwater and the Development Community. The event was sponsored by Citizens Bank and Viox & Viox, Inc. Scott Smith founded Smith Management

Group in 1989 to focus on environmental management issues facing industry and business in the US and Canada. At that time, Scott had been solving problems from water to air issues, from Texas to Ontario, for more than 15 years. Over time he has added industrial hygiene, health & safety services to help his clients address workplace issues. Scott served as Deputy Director of the Energy and Environment Cabinet under Governor Ernie Fletcher. Along the way, he translated his ability to connect with government, both on the regulatory side and in the legislative arena, to build a government services practice. And as energy has become so important to us all, he has learned to solve problems and find practical, environmentally sound solutions to the increasing need for energy.

Scott’s presentation included the draft proposed rulemaking by USEPA to define “waters of the US”, as well as the pending update of the Kentucky Construction General Permit as well as changes with the Fish and Wildlife Service and the Endangered Species Act.

Say Goodbye to Old Man Winter...

Hello Spring Break! The Annual Builder Realtor® Bash was a fantastic way to welcome spring and

“Say goodbye to Old Man winter”! We had a record number of REALTORS® who attended this year and connected with Northern Kentucky builders, developers, sponsors and other REALTORS®.

Big Turnout and Big Fun

The 2014 HBANKY Table Top Night, sponsored by Florida Tile, at Horseshoe Casino in downtown Cincinnati was

a big success! For those of you who attended, thanks for making this another record night for Table Top. With thirty of HBA’s most prestigious vendors, great food and unlimited networking this event is a night to remember.

Being a member of HBA is no gamble. Our members are the best! The sponsor’s and vendor’s for TTN compiled a generous pile of prizes. A drawing took place every three minutes! Mike Eubanks our honorary emcee did an outstanding job.

This awesome networking event would not be possible without the dedication and hard work of the Committee members and volunteers. These individuals plan for many months to assure every aspect of the evening will be the best possible event. The HBA staff could not possibly achieve this level of greatness without Chairperson Cheryl Stegman and her committee.

We are most grateful to our sponsors who made it possible to produce an event that was economical for all HBA members to attend. HBA would like to thank Florida Tile for their numerous years as the title sponsor. Other sponsors include Pella, Logan Lavelle Hunt Insurance, America’s Floor Source, American Mortgage, Arronco, Berk’s Landscaping, Cincinnati Glass Block, Nisbet Brower, Rite Rug,

Wiseway, ESSROC, Star Building Materials, PPG, Cox Media, Heliotrope Design, L&N Federal Credit Union, Watson Gravel, PostNet and Chaney for Boone County Commissioner.

If you missed this Table Top Night, you will not want to miss Table Top Night in 2015! Cheryl and her committee promises to present a bigger and better event.

Senate Minority Leader Visits With HBA

On Monday April the 14th the HBA was pleased to welcome US Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell to

Northern Kentucky. A good crowd was on hand to discuss issues with the Senator. Questions ranged from environmental regulations to the funding of the Brent Spence Bridge. Prior to the meeting the HBA was pleased to support Senator McConnell with a contribution from BUILDPAC. BUILDPAC Trustee Bill Hodges, HBA of Lexington, presented the donation to the Senator’s reelection campaign.

COMMUNITY

Housing Day at the Capital a Huge Success

Over 70 members from around the state gathered at the Capital in Frankfort to advocate on your behalf with the

general assembly. The morning began with an issues briefing where the crowd on hand heard from our HBA of Kentucky President , Jon Wilson, and their Executive Vice President, Bob Weiss, on the important issues of the day and up to date actions on bills that were going through the Capital.

Many of the bills we addressed concerned saving you time and money with workers compensation insurance reporting and monitoring. One bill we were successful in stopping would have doubled the amount of money attorneys could collect from workers compensation cases, including employer fees. A bill that was set to create a roofer’s licensure program was halted as our many members

have some serious concerns on the complexity and cost of the bill. We will be meeting with members of the Kentucky Roofing Contractors Association to attempt to work out a compromise during the interim between now

and the next general assembly. Thanks go to the many members that attended

the Housing Day at the Capital and volunteer to keep your HBA at the forefront of the legislators’ minds in Frankfort.

Throughout our history Florida Tile has been a pioneer, but equally as important, we have been a benchmark for style. We recognize and celebrate that commitment by making a great product & creating what our customers continue to want and our competitors try to copy.
