HBA Affinity and Insurance Programs Save you Thousands

NAHB Member Advantage: While the industry recovers and we all are finding ways to save money it is necessary to make sure all of our members are aware of every way they can use the HBA to save money. As all of our members are also members of the National Association

of Home Builders, you can save from our affinity partners through our Member Advantage program. Member Advantage offers you a wide variety of savings. Perhaps the best known benefit of the Member Advantage program is the $500 to $1000 discount on GMC vehicles. You can receive a $500 discount on

the purchase of a Buick, Chevrolet or GMC as a retail purchase and as much as $1,000 for the purchase of fleet vehicles. For details on the NAHB Member Advantage program visit www.NAHB.org/MA.

Verizon Wireless: Your HBA participates in the Verizon Wireless National Purchasing Partners Program. This program offers you discounts on cellular phone and data services from Verizon Wireless. As the name implies this nationwide program has a large pool of participants. That means greater savings for you. Call our local representative Brian Johnson at his office, 513-543-6123 or his cell at 859-250-6930 to find out how you can start saving on your cellular service.

AGC/SIF Workers Compensation: For years HBA members have enjoyed great rewards by participating in our workers compensation self insurers fund (AGC/SIF). The fund trustees are very cautious about who they admit into the insurance pool. As a result there are fewer claims filed in the fund. This means that rates can remain as low as they have been for years. Once in the fund for four consecutive years you are eligible for dividends. During a recent conversation with one of our Past Presidents I asked how much the dividend he received in 2013 and he said he got about $5,000. This was based on nine employees at the time. In 2013 the fund paid out just over $16,000,000 in dividends to its participants. Your premiums are based upon your payroll. If you are less busy in the winter you pay fewer premiums, unlike other funds. The program was built around the construction industry and participants must be involved directly in construction. Any insurance company that is a member of the HBA is eligible to sell this program. Visit our website at www.homebuildersnky.com to find a list of insurance companies or check out our directory, recently mailed to your business.

HBAK Association Health Care Plan: If your company is directly involved in building or remodeling homes you can avoid the Affordable Health Care Act (Obamacare). The plan will allow its members to “risk rate” while the exchanges will force participants to “community rate”. The results of risk rating means that younger healthy people are less a risk on the pool and therefore will pay lower rates. Community rating means that a mandated amount of coverage is paid by all regardless of their health or coverage choices. Risk rating equals a lower premium while community rating means a much higher premium. Most experts say that you will begin feeling the premium changes this year. Subcontractors, vendors and service providers can also participate if the majority of your business is involved with working on or delivering or delivering product to the jobsite. Your company must be designated with a particular SIC (Standard Industrial Classification). The best thing to do is take action before your premiums skyrocket. Please call the plan’s administrator, Logan Lavelle Hunt Insurance at 502-499-6880 to learn more before you pay more.

The following classes are being offered at the HBA regarding the Affordable Care Act and the HBAK Association Health Care Plan: The HBA will be hosting informational courses regarding the new Health Care Reform and insurance options. This event will be hosted by Logan Lavelle Hunt Insurance. The classes will run on Wednesday, February 26th from 10 a.m. until noon, and again March 26th from 3 p.m. til 5 p.m.

Most members we talk to that take advantage of these programs find out quickly that being a member of the HBA actually makes them money from these programs alone. It simply takes a little effort to find out what could save you money and use the programs. If not you are simply walking away from found money. If you have any suggestions how we can improve upon our programs or need more information, please call us at 859-33109500 or by email at [email protected].

Brian A. MillerExecutive Vice PresidentHome Builders Association of Northern Kentucky

HBA members… you do not want to miss out on the 2014 Table Top Night sponsored by Florida Tile! Mark your calendars and get ready for an evening of fun, networking, and prizes at

Horseshoe Casino on Thursday, March 27th from 5:30 – 8:00 p.m.HBA Registered Builders, Remodelers & Developers, this night

is for you! Our most prestigious vendors and suppliers are preparing displays and incentives to educate you on the newest materials available as well as ways to acquire the best pricing available for the products they offer. They want to tell you why doing business with an HBA member is your best bet!

Last year brought over 500 people out to the Casino. Attendees enjoyed networking, visiting the booths, cocktails, food and door prizes that totaled well over $20,000. In fact, there was a prize given away every three to five minutes. Chair person Cheryl Stegman and her committee have made preparations to make this year’s event even better.

This year, with consideration of the long lines at the bar, the committee decided to offer presale bar tickets. Every attendee will still receive 2 complimentary drink tickets. Each ticket purchased in advance at the HBA office will be $5.00 and will be good for one beer. The advantage of purchasing one of these tickets is that you not only save time

that you spend in line when you want to purchase additional drinks using cash, but this allows you to purchase a drink for another member without standing in place at the line so that you can pick up the tab.

Don’t miss out! Reserve your tickets now by calling the HBA office at 859-331-9500 or online at hbanky.com.

David Crowe, chief economist for the National

Association of Home Builders, will speak about current housing and economic conditions, what the future is likely to bring and how the local market in Northern Kentucky and the Cincinnati metropolitan area will fare in 2014. Dr. Crowe, a Kentucky native and graduate of the University of Kentucky, will present the supporting evidence for a growing but

modest housing recovery, bring the latest policy news from Washington and provide some examples of what NAHB does for members.

David Crowe is Chief Economist and Senior Vice President at the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). Dr. Crowe is responsible for NAHB’s forecast of housing and economic trends, survey research and analysis of the home building industry and consumer preferences as well as microeconomic analysis of government policies that affect housing.

Dr. Crowe is also responsible for the development and implementation of an innovative model of the local economic impact and fiscal cost of new home construction, which has estimated the net impact of new housing in over 500 local markets. Past research has concentrated on home ownership trends, tax issues, demographics, government mortgage insurance, local land use ordinance impacts and the impacts of housing on local economies.

Before becoming NAHB’s Chief Economist, Dr. Crowe was NAHB’s Senior Vice President for Regulatory and Housing Policy. Prior to NAHB, Dr. Crowe was Deputy Director of the Division of Housing and Demographic Analysis at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

He has served on federal advisory committees to the Census Bureau and to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Dr. Crowe holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Kentucky.

HBA will be hosting the Annual Housing and Economic Outlook Luncheon on Monday, February 24th from 11:30 AM - 1:30 pm at the Home Builders Association office. Registration is $25 per person.

Call the Home Builders Association at 859-331-9500 to make your reservation or visit www.homebuildersnky.com to do so today!

PAC Night will be held at the HBA’s Building Center located at 2751 Circleport Drive in Erlanger on Thursday March 6th, 2014 from 6-9pm. We heard from so many individuals asking if we were going

to have PAC Night again this year we just had to say “YES”! PAC Night is the annual fundraiser for the Political Housing Club of Northern Kentucky. There is no better opportunity to meet the movers and shakers in the building community than at PAC Night. Well over 100 of the industry’s best will be in attendance to enjoy the top shelf open bar and appetizers. Tickets to the event are $100 each person. Each ticket purchased will enter you to win the cash prize of $2,000! Additional chances to win prizes while at the event are plenty, from fine bourbons, to an iPad and more!

Tickets are available to purchase by calling the HBA at 859-331-9500. HBA leaders also have tickets to sell. There are other ways to gain access to not only PAC Night but fun throughout the year and valuable extra recognition too. This year the Political Housing Club has created a tiered giving campaign that rewards top level contributors with access to special events and recognition not available to others.

Your contribution does not buy the industry votes. It buys us access. The Political Housing Club’s voting members send questionnaires to candidates running for local and state offices. After questionnaires are replied to and reviewed, voting members of the Political Housing Club choose to support through contributions those individuals it believes will best support the building industry.

Your contribution to this endeavor is essential for our industry to maintain and grow a high profile by our elected officials. In addition to contributions to political campaigns the Club also may endorse a candidate. Endorsement by the Political Housing Club is cherished by those running for office and is another sign of how important political contributions are for our industry.

Get Ready for the Cavalcade of Homes! It is that time of year to get your sites set on the Cavalcade of Homes. With thousands of people attending the event it is your best opportunity to market your homes and your communities in the most affordable manner. The 2014 Cavalcade of Homes will run May 3-4, 10-11, and 17-18. The show will be open from Noon until 5pm each day.

This year your project will be featured on our newly upgraded website. Home descriptions, your company logo, and your contact information are but a small part of the website experience. We will add as many photos of the project as you can send us. Visitors to the site will be able to plot their visit to and from the various projects they are planning to see. Mobile app users can browse the images you send us, tap for maps and driving directions, tap to call you, visit your website or shoot you an email. MarketingIn 2013 the HBA launched new advertising campaigns for its consumer event like the Cavalcade of Homes. As a result we have experienced greater consumer response in 2013. We will invest in $35,000 worth of media and combine that effort with an expanded public relations initiative that will result in greater exposure for the Cavalcade of Homes. The show guide will be distributed through Cincy Magazine and NKY Magazine.

SponsorshipsSponsorships are available for the event. Gold sponsors will receive exposure through our advertising campaign as their company will be mentioned as a sponsor of the show, and their project will be featured on any print, TV or digital advertising. Gold Sponsors will rotate through the advertising campaign. Past sponsors are already telling us that this approach is resulting in far greater traffic and far better leads. Gold Sponsorships are $2,500 each. Up to six will be accepted.

The Tour of Remodeled Homes will be held October 4th and 5th this year from Noon until 5:00pm both days. This event is the BEST opportunity a Remodeler has to generate leads

and business. In fact many remodelers consider the Tour to be their sole marketing effort for the year. Here is what a few of those that participate in the Tour have to say:

A unique marketing and public relations campaign helps all of the Remodelers in the Tour reach their clients and create attendance for the event. Last year the Tour was featured on the FOX 19 morning news as well as most print media across the area. A special guide is printed by Cincy magazine and distributed across Greater Cincinnati. Social media is used to drum up excitement leading up to the event adding that much more to the traffic of buyers attending the Tour. The Tour of Remodeled Homes is featured on the HBA’s website as each home has a photo gallery, descriptions of the Remodeling work, driving directions and the Remodeler’s logo and links to their website. Added in 2013 is a mobile application allowing attendees to take the Tour with them on the go, click to talk with Remodelers and get driving directions as needed.

It would cost thousands of dollars to reach the qualified leads that attend the Tour of Remodeled Homes year in and year out. Remodelers have learned the longer they are in the Tour that the larger their following becomes and overtime the more the attendees at the show turn into clients. Don’t miss the opportunity to take part in the number one Remodeling sales and marketing opportunity today. To find out more please call Melanie Meyer at 859-331-9500 or by email at [email protected].

ATTENTION REMODELERS!!! GET YOUR PROJECTS READY FOR THE TOUR OF REMODELED HOMES

My company has participated in the Tour of Remodeled Homes Show continuously for the past 14 years. During that time, we found the Tour to be the absolute best way to reach qualified new clients as well as rekindle relationships with past clients. The ability to walk a potential client through a completed project is truly priceless, and continues to pay dividends year after year. When it comes to marketing my company, the Tour is always at the top of the list.

~ Dan Corbin, Corbin Custom Remodelers

We view the Tour of Remodeled Homes as the most important part of our marketing plan. Allowing potential clients to view our work with no pressure has really been a huge help in raising the quality of our clients. What I mean is the quality of people that come to the Tour of Remodeled Homes is very high thereby exposing our company to quality jobs. I truly think that the Tour has helped our company to rise up to the elite group of remodelers in our area.

STILL TIME TO JOIN THE MEMBERSHIP FANTASY LEAGUEThe 2014 HBA Membership/Retention Committee launched the Membership Fantasy League to assist in retaining and recruiting new members. Each team coach drafted a list of 20 HBA member companies to touch and mentor throughout the year through e-mails, phone calls, and personal visits. Over 200 members were drafted and will find out soon which team they have been drafted. If you want to meet more HBA members and find out why the HBA is the place to be, contact Janis Beard at 859-331-9500. The United States is on the verge of a manufacturing comeback . The domestic energy boom and low natural gas prices, together with competitive wage rates, can lead to a resurgence and the

potential revival of goods-producing industries that could provide a great opportunity to increase middle-class wages, reduce income inequality and expand social mobility. But we also risk squandering this historic opportunity — mainly because firms interested in investing in the United States are finding too few workers with the skills needed to achieve the productivity and quality required in today’s globally competitive industries.

The skills gap is real. U.S. unemployment remains at 7.5 percent, and only one out of two African American men in their early 20s has a job. A survey of employers published last year revealed that about 600,000 jobs go unfilled because of a lack of skilled labor. Meanwhile, German companies’ top complaint about expanding operations in the United States is an inadequate number of skilled workers for intermediate-level technical occupations. Swiss companies have the same complaint. The problems lie not with college-educated engineers or graduates with general bachelor’s degrees but in the dearth of skilled machinists, welders, robotics programmers and those who maintain equipment.

The central answer to the mismatch between jobs and employment is a 21st-century apprenticeship program. In Austria, Germany and Switzerland — countries with long histories of guilds and craftwork — 55 to 70 percent of all young people enter apprenticeships. Apprenticeships have grown rapidly in other countries, tripling in Australia since 1996 and jumping tenfold — to more than 500,000 entrants last year — in England since 1990. The Group of 20 ministers of labor, the International Labor Organization and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development strongly recommend expanding apprenticeship programs.

Apprenticeships could help reduce youth unemployment, widen opportunities for young people who do not want to sit in class all day and help ensure that the potential resurgence in manufacturing is not thwarted by a mismatch of skills. With effective apprenticeship systems, highly developed economies sustain jobs in manufacturing. Employment in manufacturing accounts for 20 percent of jobs in Germany and 16 percent in Switzerland but only 10 percent in the United States.

Although apprenticeships yield significant earnings gains for workers, this country has too few programs, partly because of the massive bias in public spending toward a college-only approach. Government spending on colleges and universities tops $300 billion per year; outlays to apprenticeship programs total less than $40 million annually. A public-private initiative could increase competitiveness and youth employment, upgrade skills and wages, achieve positive returns for employers and workers, and reduce government spending if companies played a larger role in skills development. A well-tested method in other countries involves building apprenticeship training so that it becomes a rewarding alternative for young people who are not bound for a traditional four-year university

degree and a recruitment and training method for employers.Apprenticeships train youths and adults by combining work-based

learning with classroom instruction in a unified program that leads to a recognized and valued occupational credential. Trainees earn money and contribute to production while they learn, often in a plant where they can be employed full time. They graduate with a sense of pride and identity as a member of an occupational group. Employers bear most of the training costs, but the value added by apprentices often exceeds their wages; employers also save recruitment and training costs and can be confident that apprentices who complete their programs have job-relevant skills. U.S. apprenticeships are concentrated in construction and manufacturing, but in many countries include such jobs as chefs and bakers, computer network administrators, commercial sales representatives and health technicians. Levels in other countries suggest the United States could increase its number of civilian workers entering apprenticeships each year from 100,000 to more than 400,000.

Think of the approach as “college-plus.” The classroom courses that apprentices take are at least equal to community college offerings in their occupational tracks. But apprentices can immediately apply what they learn, benefit from employment-based advising and mentoring, and have a chance to gain and demonstrate skills such as reliability, teamwork and problem-solving — all while earning money instead of borrowing it.

Expanded apprenticeship programs could meet the needs of a competitive global economy at a time of budget austerity. South Carolina’s Republican legislature provides modest funding for an initiative that has increased apprenticeships in the state six-fold since 2009. Government costs for apprenticeships are low, with only modest sums needed to jump-start the system; most of the investment comes from the company offering the apprenticeship.

The United States’ academic-only strategy is ill-suited for a diverse population and for the multiple needs of the 21st-century labor market. A robust apprenticeship system would ensure that the impending manufacturing expansion succeeds in macroeconomic terms and widen the routes to rewarding careers for millions of workers.

Women-owned businesses are quickly becoming an integral aspect of our economy. Despite the recession, women-owned businesses are thriving. Over the past

six years, there are only two business types that have provided a net increase in employment in the United States. The first is large, publicly traded corporations. The second, perhaps surprisingly, is privately held majority women-owned firms. All other privately held

firms saw employment decline between 2007 and 2013. In fact, equally owned firms and women-owned businesses combine to generate over $2.7 trillion in revenue and employ nearly 15.9 million people.

Even more surprisingly may be the success women-owned businesses have found in the construction industry. In terms of revenue accomplishments, women-business owners are standing toe-to-toe with their competitors in the construction field. More specifically, 11 percent of all construction firms showed revenue exceeding $500,000 in 2012. However, 13 percent of women-owned construction firms demonstrated revenues exceeding $500,000 during the same period. This is despite the fact that construction sees the lowest concentration of women-owned firms. Only seven percent of businesses in the construction field are owned by women.

An important tool women-owned entities can utilize is to become certified as a Women’s Business Enterprise (WBE). It is widely known that many government programs award a percentage of their business to minority and women-owned businesses. However, several major corporations have similar programs as well. Without the correct certification, a WBE cannot successfully bid and or be awarded certain projects creating missed opportunities. Further WBEs tend to garner a marketing edge as they build long-term relationships with large corporations as well as government entities. Certifications also tend to add credibility to a woman-owned enterprise.

If your business meets the basic definition of a WBE, it is probably worth the time, effort, and expense to pursue certification. However, not all certifications are the same. There are various certifications based on the type of goods or services the business provides. Certifications can be obtained through third parties, state departments, or the Small Business Administration. However, the entity awarding the contract will dictate which certification it will accept. It is important to understand the WBE’s needs to ensure the proper certifications are obtained.

Regardless of the certifying body, the entity seeking certification must be able to demonstrate that at least 51 percent of the business is owned by a woman or women. Also, a woman owner must be active in at least the daily management of the business. Certain WBE certifications require the daily business operations to actually be controlled by women, including both long-term management and administration of daily operations. Depending on the certifying entity, other requirements may apply.

Despite the restrictions and potential difficulties in getting certified, a WBE certification can create countless opportunities and business connections. If you would like to know more about getting certified as a WBE, please contact Kelly Gindele in the Construction Section of Dressman Benzinger LaVelle psc. Kelly can be reached at (513) 639-7688 or via email at [email protected].
