Once again the Member Mix & Mingle was a huge success. Forge Lumber served up Octoberfest with wonderful hot pretzels, sauerkraut, brats, metts and a variety of Octoberfest brews. Guests were treated to a behind the scenes experience by touring their large mill in full operation. What a great way for Forge to show off their beautiful display of cabinets, granite countertops and accessories. The HBA offers the

opportunity for HBA members to open their showroom or place of business three times throughout the year. Next opportunity will be March 2012. If you are interested in hosting a Member Mix & Mingle in 2012, call Janis at the HBA office.

October has soon some of the best Professional Development to date here at HBA. We have had good

turn out and a lot of excellent feedback on the program and what everyone wants to see. The Education Committee members put a lot of hard work and effort into preparing the courses for everyone to not only meet requirements like AGC and general Continuing Education, but also to help make business here in Northern Kentucky more profitable and rewarding for all of those who put so much of their lives into what they do.

I would like to invite all HBA members to put in their 2-cents concerning Professional Development. Please take a moment to e-mail the Director of Professional Development, Thomas Napier, and let me know what you enjoyed and what you would really like to see. We do read every e-mail and take all of the information into account when planning out the Education Schedule here at HBA. Or better yet, take a moment to stop by the office the next time you are at HBA and let me know what you think!

Look for Winter 2012’s Professional Development Calendar to be out soon!

a Tour to Remember

The 2011 Tour of Remodeled Homes, was held October 1st and 2nd.  This year’s Tour featured 19 stunning remodels scattered throughout Northern Kentucky and Greater Cincinnati. Thank you to our sponsors, First Security

Trust Bank, Pella, Kelly Bros. Lumber, and Kroger.  Our 19 Remodelers created a tour to remember; as this show was the largest we have ever produced.

With over 2000 hits to our online show guide, it is evident consumers were eager to take the tour. We hope you got the chance to view the contemporary and traditional kitchen makeovers, tranquil outdoor living areas, and the church to loft renovation, dream bathrooms and more!

During the wrap-up meeting, held at First Security Trust Bank many Remodelers mentioned that the cold, dreary weather on Saturday may have put a damper on attendance but Sunday brought much larger crowds, and promising leads.

Thanks to everyone who helped our Remodelers showcase their hard work. For more information about the Tour and why you should work with a Registered Remodeler visit www.hbanky.com.

Remodelors participating in the Tour for 2011 were: Adam Miller Homes, Ashley Construction, Bills Remodeling & Electric Inc, Corbin Custom Remodelers Inc, Cornerstone Crafstmen, Cul-len Brothers. Pella Impervia dual-Color Option NOW AvAILABLe!

Neither wind nor rain nor sleet or snow stops determined mail carriers. Nor do those elements and other climate extremes phase Pella Corporation’s energy-efficient Pella Impervia line, expanding in the Summer of 2011 to include White interior option for all units.

Pella Impervia windows and patio doors offer more style and design flexibility for your customers. With the new dual-color option, Pella Impervia products can have a White interior with the choice of White, Tan or Brown exterior.

Pella Impervia windows and patio doors arrive pre-finished with a powder-coat paint finish on both interior and exterior. This durable finish stays looking great for years with little care.

“We’re pleased to offer more innovative solutions to builders and homeowners living in areas where a stronger, more durable window is a must,” said Duane Putz, director of sales and marketing for Pella Impervia. “This product is made for hot, cold, wet or windy climates and now it’s available in more styles.”

Pella Impervia can withstand the forces of Mother Nature without cracking, shrinking or warping in extreme weather conditions. The sleek-profiled innovative products made from Duracast®, the strongest most durable material in windows and doors, are virtually maintenance-free and well-suited to today’s busy lifestyles and balanced budgets for home and business owners.* Builders, remodelers and homeowners may choose from convenient factory prefinished brown, white or tan color options and now have a White interior!

•We have our newsletter done electronically thru the internet. We are one of the only WC Councils to do so.

•We have worked the Home and Remodeling Booth every year providing workers for three days.

•For 5 years we have collected and donated dresses, shoes, accessories for Cinderella’s Closet. We also volunteered many hours there.

•We have made over $9000.00 by selling split the pot at events. The money is then donated to students at the Apprenticeship Program.

•We supply a dinner twice a year for the STARS program for approximately 80 to 100 individuals. We continually work with this program throughout the year. (It is a grief program for children who have lost love ones.) We have done this for at least 10 years.

•We have collected items for various groups 2 to 3 times a year. (Bingo prizes at the VA hospital in Ft. Thomas, Pet food for the Animeals program for the

Sr. Services, Personal items for Welcome House, Food for local food pantries and much more)

•For the last 2 years we have had a team for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. We have raised over $6200.00 for the Cure. We also have team T-shirts with 8 sponsors on the back and our HBA name on the front.

•We sponsor at least 1-2 families every Christmas. We provide them with everything including food valued at $300-$500 yearly.

•We have provided the landscaping at the Habitat house. Including all plants and materials needed plus all of the work. Approximately $3500.00 value.

•We provided ALL of the masonry for one HONK house in Ludlow. Brick, mortar, angles, sand and all of the labor. A $10,000.00 value at the very least. With the second HONK house, we helped provide and serve meals for two days while the house was being framed by HBA members.

•We designed and built a handicap accessible playground for Burlington Elementary. All items and labor were donated.

•Collected items for soldiers in Iraq. 55 individual packets were sent.

•Sponsored blood drives

•Helped serve Thanksgiving dinner at Holly Hill Girls Home to over 200.

•Published a cookbook

•Held a free self defense course for young women. Over 50 attended.

•Over the past 10 years we have held an annual fundraiser. We have given the proceeds to various organizations with our favorite being Senior Services of Northern Kentucky’s Meals on Wheels Program. Your WCAC has given no less than $30,000.00 over the past 10 years to such groups. All in the name of the Northern Kentucky Home Builders Association.

There is just too much to put on paper what we have done over the last 10 years but what is listed below easily equals

$70,000.00. All of this has been done in the HBA of Northern KY name.

We are asking for your help to continue doing this. Over the past several years, our membership has gone down drastically. In the early 90’s, we were over

100 members strong. Today we have 16 contributing members. This group cannot survive if we don’t attract new members. The Council does such good things. We would love to invite more of you to join us. We only meet 6 times a year. We don’t require a lot of your time – just what you want to donate. All of the things we have achieved have been done by a core group of dedicated members who want to

keep the Council alive. We would like to invite you to participate. Come find out what our group is all about. Our annual Christmas Party will be held Thursday, December 1st at the HBA Office.

We would love to invite you as our guest to come check us out. Please call or email Cindy Goetz – 859-525-8895 [email protected] or JoEllen Thompson [email protected].

The Home Builders Association of Northern Kentucky released their August 2011 report showing that Tri-County (Boone, Kenton and Campbell) area saw a 31% increase in single family permits from August 2010 over August

2011, a year over year trend that has now continued for two months. Remodeling permit activity practically tripled this year’s August over last years August continuing a trend that has now gone on for a full year.

“At this point we feel it is safe to say that remodeling is back and in a big way,” said Brian Miller, executive vice president for the Home Builders Association of Northern Kentucky. “We have not seen this volume of residential remodeling permits for any month that we have on record for the last ten years. We continue to see very strong multi-family reports and other indicators that show that the fundamentals of a housing recovery are continuing to take shape. Our condominium permits have enjoyed a 37% increase for the year to date 2011 over 2010. All of this data combined is showing that people are moving into their own homes or apartments and not living with relatives or friends as much. What gives us additional hope is that single family home permits for one month in August were at the highest level of any month since the spring of 2010 when the First Time Homebuyer Tax Credit was still in full swing,” he concluded.

A new paper by economist Paul Emrath of NAHB’s Economics and Housing Policy Group estimates the share of an average,

single-family home’s price that is due to costs associated with government regulations.

Using responses from the NAHB/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index survey and average long-run assumptions about terms on construction loans, profit margins, and time lags between different phases of the home building process, the paper finds that 25% of the price of a built-for-sale single-family home is due to government regulations. Nearly two-thirds of this impact is due to regulations that affect the developer of the lot, with the rest due to regulations that fall on the builder during construction.

Costs due to regulations can arise from many sources. At the local level, jurisdictions may charge permit, hook-up, and impact fees and establish development and construction standards that either directly increase costs to builders and developers, or cause delays that translate to higher costs. State governments may be involved in this process directly or indirectly. Several states, for example, have adopted state-wide building codes. And although impact fees are imposed by local governments, such fees typically cannot be imposed without enabling legislation at the state level. The federal government can also affect the price of a home—for example, by requiring permits for stormwater discharge on construction sites, which may lead to delays in addition to the hard cost of

filing for a permit. These are only a few examples of regulations that builders and developers encounter in practice.

The estimates show how the burdens of regulation are ultimately paid for by homebuyers. The new research is also useful because it shows an additional challenge (beyond foreclosures, consumer uncertainty, and difficulty in qualifying for mortgages) for home building to recover from its current depressed levels.

We wanted to make you aware that the Boone County Planning Commission has

released the Mall Rd. District Study. Their long range planning committee will review the study and likely send it to the planning commission at a meeting held at 6:00pm, October 19th, in the Boone County Administration Building. We encourage you to attend this meeting.

The HBA has been involved in several workshops for this study, which includes both commercial and residential uses. There are design restrictions in the study, however the study itself is very flexible in the type of higher density housing that will be available on Mall Road and commercial elements that the city of Florence is seeking. There are also financing incentives that the city is researching in order to try and make this

concept work. This is an interesting study that may expand the type of housing and commercial development opportunities available in the Northern Kentucky market.

We encourage you to investigate this study as it will expand the menu of development and construction available to our industry in Northern Kentucky. The study can be found at this link: http://www.boonecountyky.org/pc/MallRdDistStudy.aspx

The Enzweiler Trade Program’s first quarter of the 2011-2012 Academic year is done and the students are deep into their areas of concentration and progressing very well every day. It has been a pleasure to see the

incoming students come “into their own” during class and take pride in what they do. We have seen many already amazing new students and seen their abilities shine.

Our returning students are doing very well and many are employed in their field already, becoming an invaluable part of the skilled workforce here in Northern Kentucky. Students speak very highly of their time here at the Enzweiler Trade Program and are always willing to share stories about what they have experienced here.

Its also very gratifying to see the commitment that our staff has for the program and they students they teach. Just listening to the time and care that they take to carefully explain and make sure that the students are comfortable with the topics they learn and still have time to crack a few jokes in class!

If anything is true about the Enzweiler Trade Program, it is that the staff truly love what they do and love to share it with students. The shining example of this is Eddie Moore, the Electrical 1 and 2 teacher. Eddie consistently teaches students not only Electrical Code and Topics, but also about what it means to be a member of a team and a how to be an asset to a growing company. Eddie, an Enzweiler graduate himself, provides real life experiences as well as a lifetime of knowledge in the trade to enlighten his students about what it really takes to succeed in his chosen profession. Eddie has helped students purchase books and helped with supplies as well. It can truly be said that Eddie is the Heart and Soul of the Enzweiler Trade Program. Thank you Eddie for all you do!

DO YOU NEED MARKETING?*!

513.474.3537 • pmgcincy.comWage garnishment is a procedure used by a creditor to collect on a judgment for a sum of money issued by a court against an individual debtor. This procedure

is used to direct an employer to withhold funds from the wages of an employee, i.e. the individual debtor, to pay the amount of the judgment to the creditor.

Under the Kentucky statute governing garnishments, an order of garnishment received by an employer creates a lien on all disposable and nonexempt earnings earned by the specific employee during the pay period when the order is served on the

employer. Kentucky follows the federal wage garnishment law which allows a maximum withholding of either 25% of the employee’s disposable earnings during a pay period or the amount by which the disposable earnings exceeds 30 times the federal minimum wage, whichever is less. The Kentucky garnishment form will include a section guiding the employer through this calculation of disposable earnings.

Because only up to 25% of an employee’s earnings are subject to a wage garnishment, there can only be one garnishment in effect at a time. Thus, if you receive a second garnishment for the same employee, the second garnishment will become effective immediately after the first garnishment is paid in full.

Kentucky law states that the employer must, unless otherwise directed by the court, remit the garnishment payments directly to the attorney for the judgment creditor. The attorney’s name and address should appear on the garnishment order received by the employer.

It is very important for an employer to timely respond to a wage garnishment order. Even if the employee no longer works at your company or if the employee does not have sufficient disposable earnings to garnish, you should still send a response to the attorney that issued the garnishment indicating why the funds aren’t being withheld.

There can be adverse action taken against an employer who fails to respond to a wage garnishment or fails to withhold the appropriate funds from an employee’s earnings. If an employer fails to answer a garnishment within 20 days (or 23 days if the garnishment is served by mail) then the judgment creditor may move the court to compel the employer to appear in court with his or her records and show cause why he or she should not be held in contempt of court. The ultimate result of an action against an employer for failure to respond to a garnishment could be a judgment entered by the court against the employer for past due wages. This is obviously an action any employer would like to avoid so it is a best practice to respond to any wage garnishment as soon as it is received.

In our last article we suggested a couple simple strategies for building your company’s brand identity for future success; researching how your business is perceived by others, identifying

a point of difference that you can exploit in the marketplace, and being consistent in how your brand is portrayed in everything you do.

We’d now like to explore how to take advantage of one of your most potent and easy to access resources…your employees. These are the folks who are your business’s front line, interacting with customers while serving as your direct representative to the world outside your walls. For good or bad, they are the embodiment of your brand. Each of them has within their abilities the capacity for derailing or enhancing your objectives. They can also the first ones to hear if something is amiss in the marketplace, especially with regards to how your business is being perceived by outsiders. It is imperative therefore that you build a process for ensuring that their vision of your brand is in close alignment with your own.

BrING THem INTO THe CIrCLe You can’t expect your employees to embrace the vision you hold for your brand if you haven’t properly shared it with them! What better way to expand their knowledge than to bring them together for a thoughtful discussion of what you feel the company stands for, how it differs from the competition, how your customers view you versus the other guys, and how you believe the customer base can be best served. Allow time for the employees to freely weigh in, so that you can better address head-on any issues that arise.

eNSUre THey Are ALIGNed WITH yOUr BrANd Many HR experts will suggest that the best way to develop a strong base of good brand stewards is to engage them at the earliest moments in their employment. Clearly you need to hire those individuals who you believe can be the very best at representing your brand at all levels of the company. All new employees should undergo an orientation in which they are given instruction on your company values and your brand’s essence, along with strong encouragement on how to demonstrate both of them inside and outside the organization.

eNCOUrAGe THem TO deLIver THe BrANd’S PrOmISe In order to ensure that your employees are finding ways to put your brand’s promise into practice, empower them to find ways in their daily activities to bring to life their own interpretation of the brand. Foster an environment where they can share with one-another how they allowed the essence of your brand to be expressed within their own roles. In this way you make it possible for them to build a stronger connection with your brand, therefore increasing their ability to serve as brand ambassadors.

GIve THem reCOGNITION WHeN THey dO Incentivize employees to deliver on the brand’s promise by rewarding them when they do. Hold regular contests or recognition ceremonies in which employees are rewarded for finding ways to build the brand through their own initiatives. Be ready to spot notable behaviors at all levels of your organization, so that everyone shares in this effort. Use your company’s internal communication tools, such as employee newsletters, to continually highlight notable brand building behaviors that everyone should adopt.

CONSTANTLy CHeCK ON THeIr PrOGreSS Engage your employees on a regular basis in order to gain a better “street level” understanding of what your customers are saying about your brand. What are they hearing in their day to day conversations with their clients, both good and bad? But don’t rely entirely on just what your current customers are reportedly saying about your brand! Be diligent about pursuing the point of view from others outside your organization, including suppliers, prospective and previous clients, and industry experts.

Not Just Another Pretty Face

Striking a balance between beauty and reliability can be challenging. Yet it is this

challenge that has been Florida Tile’s driving force for more than 50 years. We infuse

the qualities of strength, durability, versatility & value into every product we make.

As a leader in environmentally conscious manufacturing of ceramic wall and porcelain

floor tile, we recycle millions of gallons of water and literally tons of material a year in

our Lawrenceburg, KY factory. All in all, we produces a finished product this is both

beautiful and responsible.Visit one of our Florida Tile locations for more information
