Rowallane Garden An inspirational 21-hectare (52-acre) garden located only 30 minutes from Belfast. It offers a welcome and interpretation area, a café with views across the garden, gardeners’ room and its very own resident potter. The garden is made up of a series of smaller gardens including the inner and outer walled gardens, Pleasure Ground, Rock Garden Wood and woodland area, all linked by a network of paths.

Other places to visit nearby are Castle Ward, Mount Stewart and Patterson’s Spade Mill.

Itinerary ideas

Discovering the delights of Down Mount Stewart is our first stop on the tour. Overlooking Strangford Lough, the recently restored family home boasts collections of international and national significance. The garden is ranked as one of the top ten gardens in the world and has many rare plants from around the world.

After visiting Mount Stewart take a short ferry trip to Castle Ward, a place full of hidden surprises, quirky tales and secrets. The 18th-century house has two distinctly different façades, classical and Gothic, set within an immense walled demesne.

Rowallane Garden is the final visit of the day. The garden is a mix of informal and formal garden spaces with unusual features and rare plants from across the world that thrive in this mild climate.

The former home of the Viscounts Bangor, guided tours reveal the history of the different façades. In the farmyard, you can visit the water-powered corn mill, or stroll among flowers and subtropical plants in the Sunken Garden, while the extensive grounds are criss-crossed by a 21-mile network of family-friendly multi-use trails.
