Woohoo! It’s Tour TimeAs I write this I’m just locking down our final homes

for the 2015 Northern Home & Cottage Home Tour from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on September 19—all while breathing a sigh of relief, albeit an excited one. Putting together the home tour is a jenga that involves 1) identifying stunning homes 2) hoping that the contractors who built the stunning homes will understand the value of putting the homes on the tour 3) obtaining permission from the owners of the stunning homes to put their home on the tour …

I am delighted to say that we have successfully secured 12 stunning homes because their 12 far-sighted contractors and 12 magnanimous owners agreed to put the homes on the tour (and allow me to pause here and especially thank these homeowners for the money this tour raises for Child and Family Services of Northwestern Michigan).

Now let me talk about these homes! The views from each are worth the price of the ticket—on this tour, you’ll gaze, starry-eyed, out floor-to-ceiling-windows that look out on sweet tiny Armstrong Lake, Little Glen Lake, Lake Michigan’s Sleeping Bear Bay, full-on Lake Michigan, Lake Michigan’s Grand Traverse Bay and Lake Skegemog. You’ll also see the absolute most energy efficient homes being built today (we’re talking negative energy bills!) and the active, stylish way the new gen of 55+ folks want to live. And design ideas? Go ahead, log out of pinterest.com and houzz.com. Visions of gorgeous granites, ingenious window coverings and the latest fabrics, appliances, floor coverings, furniture styles, tile and fixtures will be dancing in your head for days. Please, no photos in these homes. But you can certainly chat with their designers, who will help you identify what you love.

Find the guide to the 2015 Northern Home and Cottage Home Tour on page 12 of this issue. I look forward to seeing you on the tour!

You know where you want to go. Let’s talk about how we can help you get there.

It was the same challenge every summer. Dad would take the boat to “our spot”.. our favorite secluded beach on the sand dunes.

After he anchored the boat we donned our cool new goggles and got ready for the race. Mom would yell “GO!”, and we would all plunge into the big lake and race Dad to the top of the dunes. He would always win, of course.

Until this year– finally. The celebration that followed featured ice cream, smores, and lots of humble pie for Dad.

annual

The 2015 Northern Home & Cottage Home Tour treats tourgoers to 12 homes, each chosen for their distinctive style and/or innovative lifestyle concept. On this tour you’ll see nationally acclaimed modern design, pioneer-ing NetZero energy effi ciency, lovely shingle and coastal looks and more. The tour itself winds around the Leelanau Peninsula, through Traverse City (with a jog out onto the Old Mission Peninsula) and out to Skegemog Point Drive, northeast of Traverse City.

There’s no shortage of water scenery along the way: the Glen Lakes, Sleeping Bear Bay, wide open Lake Michigan, East and West Grand Traverse Bays and Lake Skegemog.

September, when the summer crowds have thinned, is just the time to make this drive.

From end to end, the tour is about 80 miles—very doable in a day, but it helps to plan your route ahead of time. As always, we’ve kept the ticket prices low so if you can’t make it to all of the homes, you’ll still fi nd full value in your day.

We are so grateful to the homeowners who have so generously opened their homes for this tour that ben-efi ts Child & Family Services of Northwestern Michigan. Established in the 1930s, this organization provides crucial services to the children and families of our region.

Tickets (along with the tour map and driving directions) are $15 in advance, $20 day of. To purchase tickets please go

Builder Jim Anderson recalls the first time he accompa-

nied architect David Salmela to the site on sweet, placid

Armstrong Lake, where Doug and Bonnie Yingst were

planning to build a home. The couple knew they wanted

a home with clean modern lines—a structure that would

slip quietly into the wooded site—and so they had tracked

down Jim, who had already made a name for himself

constructing the designs of Northern Michigan’s modern-

ist architects Glenn Arai and Roger Hummel. “David was

influenced by the vertical lines of the trees,” Jim says of

that first site visit.

David, whose forebears immigrated to Minnesota from

Finland, has made a national name for himself as a Great

Lakes modernist—an architect who pulls on the cool clean-

liness of Nordic design and finds inspiration in the simple

structures that built the Northwoods, such as agricultural

buildings, fishermen’s shanties, woodcutters cabins.

Typical of his style, David’s design for the Armstrong

Lake home reflects what is around it: those sentinel hard-

woods and the view of the lake. The geometric structure

is constructed with vertical columns that support four-foot

widths of glass that let in generous views of the site. The

interior spills down several steps from the great room into

the kitchen—a waterfall comes to mind. The buildings are

mostly faced in black, like an inky forest that the sun has

to work to penetrate. A couple of outbuildings mimic the

main house, and an outdoor freestanding masonry chim-

ney/fireplace invites visitors to gather around the warmth.

This nationally acclaimed home is a rare treat for tourgo-

ers—as is the pavilion that David Salmela also designed for

the grounds. Shaped like a bolt of lightning touching

ground, it is fabricated with the same material used to

build skateboard parks.

Like the classy grande dame she is, this home has clung

to her best features since she was built in the 1920s or

30s—a stately porte cochère, white-painted fireplace man-

tel with a neo-classical relief across it, fieldstone fireplace,

Dutch lap siding and Douglas fir floors. But the years took

their toll, covering her good qualities with suburban-blue

siding, linoleum, bad fixtures …

Enter homeowners Joe and Fran White and their archi-

tect/contractor Matt Wollam, who finished renovating this

Little Glen Lake home just this summer. The project was a

perfect fit for Matt’s penchant for echoing historic detail

and the Whites’ exuberance for tastefully outfitting homes.

A seamless new addition makes the home large enough

for two families to vacation together (yes, you could rent

this and enjoy your dream Glen Lake vacation!). Upstairs,

two master suites anchor each end of the home, with five

smaller bedrooms and baths between. Fran’s eye for period

wall colors sets the right Up North tone. Two staircases lead

to two living areas connected by a spacious kitchen that

functions in overdrive for modern families while carrying the

warm feel of a bygone era: mossy green-painted cabinetry,

two white enamel farmhouse sinks, two Sub-Zero refrigera-

tors, a 48-inch Wolf range, and a handsome butler’s pantry.

Wollam uncovered the original Dutch lap siding then

matched it for the addition, refurbished the porte cochère,

refinished the Douglas fir and oak floors, and designed per-

fectly period balconies off the master suites that hearken to

Gatsby, Daisy and mint juleps. The white embossed fire-

place mantel is glossier than ever, and the fieldstone chim-

ney still stands tall. The manicured lawn rolls out to the

ageless Little Glen Lake view—not West Egg. Better. ELIZABETH EDWARDS IS MANAGING EDITOR OF NORTHERN HOME & COTTAGE.

Designer Angela Goodall describes this residence on Lake

Michigan as a contemporary beach house with some indus-

trial edginess as expressed in accents of weathered bronze

metal. In this extensive cosmetic remodel, the only structural

changes were to the master bedroom where the ceiling was

raised to introduce a unique feature called a bronze collar tie.

Additionally, a closet was removed to widen the bathroom,

allowing space for a contemporary freestanding soaking

tub—with a view of Sleeping Bear Bay. Soft gray cabinetry

and Calcutta Gold marble round out the bathroom.

In the kitchen, a water-colored glass tile backsplash

replaced pickled wood paneling and a whimsical mermaid

mosaic-inset, once set behind the stove, was moved to

where she belongs: in the bathroom shower. High-end appli-

ances, white-painted custom cabinetry, a new island and

marble countertops complete the kitchen.

In the living area, a country style woodstove was replaced

with a contemporary stainless model that shines against its

backdrop of Ann Sacks stacked-stone tile on the wall. A new

wet bar and dark-gray stained cabinetry complement the

newly refinished and stained hardwood floor.

Other must-see’s: A girl’s bedroom and Crow’s Nest with

soft white walls and chartreuse shag carpet; built-in bunk

beds in the boys’ room; an entertainment room with dark

navy blue walls to enhance the in-home theater experience,

and a one-of-a-kind hand-blown glass fixture in the foyer.

This gray, shingle-style home on Sleeping Bear Bay fits

into its shore-side setting with the confidence and grace of

a great American coastal classic. Walk into the simple but

elegant foyer (worthy of a sea captain’s homecoming) and

then into a great room that shines with the attention to

detail that comes with assembling a first-class design-and-

build team: builder Dale Boone, architect Sarah Bourgeois,

kitchen designer Sandra Bargiel and homeowners Mike

and Susan Garver.

The great room with its handsome Brazilian cherry floor,

dove-gray walls and glossy white woodwork is a hand-

some backdrop for the stunning bay view visible through

the bank of windows and glass doors. A Scandinavian-style

teak dining room set (from Edwards Home Furnishings in

Suttons Bay) creates a fluid transition from the open living

room to the open kitchen, where a built-in breakfast nook

with banquette seating offers more intimate dining.

The kitchen manages all its functions in crisp, inviting

style. Expansive Super White granite countertops and

glossy white fireclay sink make prep a breeze, while cook-

ing and baking are elevated on the dual-fuel, six-burner,

double-oven Wolf Range. A small but efficient bar and

coffee center holds a KitchenAid Architect Series Icemaker

and KitchenAid double-drawer refrigerator. Tucked

between the kitchen and the door to the garage, a gener-

ous butler’s pantry keeps the muss and fuss out of sight.

It’s all pulled together with a translucent white subway tile

backsplash and painted white Shaker-style cupboards.

Behind this home’s beautiful façade are several clever

ideas that make living here that much sweeter: two wash-

ers and two dryers (one set is near the beach access door

and the other is in the master bedroom closet), remote-

controlled screens on the verandas and a lovely, light-

weight painting in the living room that lifts off to reveal the

big screen television.

The Homestead’s Vantage Pointe

development, set on the far north-

grown one lovely home at a time since

its inception in the 1990s. Somehow,

however, the prize lot, nestled up to

the protected acreage of the Sleeping

overlooked—until Todd and Wendy

Working with Paul Maurer

If you have the average three bedroom home, last winter you probably paid about $2400 to heat it. This year... you can

already guess what energy costs will end up being.

How would you like to cut that in half, to say $1200? Or better yet, by two-thirds, to $800? We thought so.

Call GeoFurnace today to learn how you can drastically reduce your heating and cooling costs. With a geothermal heating and cooling

system from WaterFurnace, it’s not as difficult as you would think.

north and South Manitou Island—so close

it feels like you could reach out and touch

it. Sails breeze by, freighters pass, birds and

squirrels flit and hop in the surrounding

leafy forest.

Everything about the home was designed

to complement the view. A scraped walnut-

brown wood floor recalls tree bark, the

kitchen counters and island topped in thick

white granite streaked with the shades

of dunes and water evoke, well, sand and

water, and the weathered-wood staircase

feels like driftwood.

The home lives simply with touches of luxury.

A top of the line Pro 48 SubZero refrigerator

sports a classy glass door, the Wolf range is

topped with a custom hood, a stacked stone

wall is outfitted with a big-screen television

Lake Michigan through the boughs—all of

which makes this home rock.

Northern Home & Cottage AUG |SEPT 15 NHC39

Northern Home & Cottage first wrote

about this cottage in 2006. At that time,

the cottage had been transformed from

a homely cinderblock structure (perhaps

once used as a Native American school-

house) into a rustic seasonal cabin that

rocked an understated style the home-

owners termed “cozy industrial.” When

Detroit designer Kyle Evans saw it for

the first time in 2006, he fell in love. “It

was tiny with so much charm and char-

acter,” he says.

As the family grew and it was time

to enlarge the cottage, Kyle was ready

for the job. Wanting to leave the orig-

inal cabin as untouched as possible,

Kyle oversaw the design of a separate

2,400-square-foot structure that used

the same basic architectural elements

including cinderblock, cedar and birch

plywood that define the original cabin.

The family then transformed the origi-

nal cabin into a summer entertaining

kitchen—updated using completely sus-

tainable materials. The summer kitchen

opens on to a fabulous outdoor terrace,

outfitted with a bar and wood-fired

pizza oven. The terrace spills out to the

bluff-edge of the property, delivering a

magnificent Lake Michigan view.

While the new home echoes its diminu-

tive counterpart in both interior and exte-

rior building materials, the construction is

state-of-the-art—insulated tightly to keep

it cozy in four seasons and smart enough

to control everything from turning up the

heat to turning on the water fountains

remotely. And the interior style? Suffice

it to say that tourgoers will be treated

to what happens when one of Detroit’s

most celebrated designers turns his heart

and extensive talents north.

Expect fine, classic pieces from an

eclectic mix of time periods and styles—

Memphis, country, mid-century modern

and early 20th century—put together to

form what Kyle terms a “timeless peri-

od.” Look for mini-themes in every room:

a collection of hand mirrors in the pow-

der room, a nautical theme in another

bathroom that revolves around lighting

made from old fishing bobbers. And you

won’t want to miss the great local art,

including a piece by Clay Carlson, whose

family had fished out of Leland for

generations.

With their gallant red spires, unexpected curves and

arches and throw-your-braid-over balconies, the 19th-cen-

tury Victorian Italianate buildings at the Grand Traverse

Commons feel enchanted. Traverse City has watched,

entranced, as the Minervini Group has transformed this his-

toric former state hospital campus into The Village at Grand

Traverse Commons, a high-end residential community sur-

rounded by boutiques, eateries, wineries and trails.

The heart of the development is Building 50—a four-and

fi ve-story labyrinth that stretches a quarter-mile through

the campus and adds up to a total 386,740 square feet of

architecturally brilliant space. Until 2010 the north end sat

vacant, looking more and more forlorn as the south end

became a hive of cool.

That was the year Karen Anderson heard about the vil-

lage. Karen is the founder and CEO of Cordia, a small, inno-

vative and experienced organization devoted to creating

meaningful lifestyle opportunities for people over 55. She

lives in Boston and had never heard of Traverse City—but

she did her research, and was blown away about what

she found out about The Village at the Grand Traverse

Commons. Fast forward several years to the buzz and whirr

of jackhammers and sandblasters unleashed to renovate the

southern end of Building 50 into the Senior Residential Club

at Grand Traverse Commons.

The fi nished project is 110 private residences—92 of which

have a unique design and layout—and 30,000 square feet

of gracious common area. Residences, ranging from studios

to one and two bedrooms, are leased for an all-inclusive

monthly fee that includes weekly housekeeping, one meal

per day and access to the club's common spaces. Counted

in that public space are an upscale restaurant presided

over by Michael Bauer—a chef known in Traverse City for

his farm-to-table ethic—a pub, a bar and a lovely outdoor

patio with a fi re ring. The club abounds with mind and soul-

fulfi lling opportunities from art classes led by one of Cordia’s

three artists-in-residences to concerts and informational

talks.

Of course, the many amenities of the Village of Grand

Traverse—Spanglish for Latin food, Higher Grounds Coffee,

Left Foot Charley Winery, Underground Cheesecake—are

just a short walk away. And if Cordia residents don’t feel

like going outside, they can walk through carpeted halls all

the way to the other end of Building 50 to shopping the

Mercato (Italian for marketplace), dine at one of two fi ne

Italian restaurants and much more.

Tourgoers on the 2015 Northern Home & Cottage Home

Tour will learn much more about what Cordia offers. They

will also be treated to tours of two of the private residenc-

es. The basic interior design of both units is by Anne Webb

Johnson of Wellesley Interior Design in Massachusetts—

who is also responsible for the sophisticated public space

interiors.

Johnson outfitted the units with granite countertops,

custom ceramic tile showers and cherry cabinetry. The

plush carpeting is from Mohawk’s Aladdin collection,

color Sand Dollar.

The smart urban furnishings in each residence are

by Scott Shuptrine Interiors (a 4500-square-foot gal-

lery located inside Petoskey’s Art Van Furniture) and

include Scott’s private label upholstery, American Leather,

Bernhardt, Century, Drexel Heritage and Hooker furniture.

Finishing touches are a mix of John Richard and Ralph

Lauren accessories and Momeni area rugs. The residences

can be purchased furnished.

Consider this: In March, when the

rest of us were still shuddering under

substantial energy bills as the bitter

Northern Michigan winter dragged on,

the Lardies, one of the fi rst families to

move into Traverse City’s new Depot

Neighborhood, paid just $2.50. Yep,

that decimal is in the right place: Two

dollars and fi fty cents for heat and

utilities for a family of six. And after this

summer, the family’s fi rst in the home,

the Lardies will probably never have

another energy bill. That’s because the

energy made from solar panels on the

top of their super-insulated home will

generate enough kilowatts to the grid

to more than credit the Lardies for

what they’ll use next winter.

This lovely waterside home on Old Mission Peninsula

speaks with a soft, southern coastal accent: hurricane

shutters, a cupola above the outside stone porch and

Caribbean colonial pale yellow-and-black color palette.

Inside, the liquid blues of West Grand Traverse Bay flood

the great room through expansive windows and a sliding

door. Homeowners Fred and Laraine Schorr continued

the sophisticated coastal vibe on the interior with choices

including a Santos Mahogany floor, beach-glass blue walls,

white beadboard and molding and a black granite hearth.

The two-story home hovers around 3,500 square feet

but lives much larger thanks to an open great-room floor

plan, the expansive porch (outfitted with a stone fireplace)

and well-thought-out details, including a Murphy Bed in

the office/guest room. In the kitchen the Schorrs (both of

whom love to cook) added a circular granite counter-height

four-top to the end of the working island so that guests can

comfortably do what they always do: Hang out in the kitchen

while their hosts cook.

The Schorrs can’t say enough about Mike Ferarro and his

crew, crediting Mike with a “good eye for design and incred-

ible with follow up and attention to detail.” The homeown-

ers, who lived out of state while construction was going on,

made only a handful of trips to check on progress. They

trusted Mike so much that when he called to tell them the

shade of blue wall paint they’d chosen looked washed out,

they trusted him to use his own judgment and paint it one

shade darker. Like everything else about this home, the

shade ended up to be perfect. ELIZABETH EDWARDS IS MANAGING EDITOR OF NORTHERN HOME & COTTAGE.

If you’ve ever thought of downsizing (or if you simply love

perfectly designed smallish homes!) this home is a must—

see. Gary and Nancy Nealis had been living in a much larger

house when they decided to simplify their lives by build-

ing this 1,800-square-foot home. The clincher? They didn’t

want to sacrifice amenities. And a couple of other caveats:

their pretty little lot on Old Mission Peninsula with its view

of East Grand Traverse Bay was narrow and considered

hard to build on. And to boot, the Nealises, who began the

project just last winter, wanted to be in their new home by

June 2015.

Enter the super-efficient team of architect Robert

Holdeman, builder Brian Mohr of Calybr Homes, and Cedar

Creek Interiors. The finished product shines like a precious

little gem. An open floor plan with a three-season porch and

view of the bay, wraps around a courtyard that holds a just-

the-right-sized swimming pool—a pool that also has a view

of the bay. But the real proof that fine living can come with

a diminutive floor plan is a bay window set off the living area

with a view of the pool—a nook that offers just enough room

for a baby grand piano.

The homeowners can’t say enough about how well Calybr

Homes executed the construction and the fine craftsman-

ship—all the while meeting their six-month timeline. Cedar

Creek Interiors added the finishing touches on an interior

that breathes relaxed coastal style. ELIZABETH EDWARDS IS MANAGING EDITOR OF NORTHERN HOME & COTTAGE.

Lynn Didier and her husband, John

Karwoski, have a beautiful new home

on Lake Skegemog. Lynn also has two

talented grandchildren, one of whom,

Nikita Hausz, at age 13 last year, made

two videos for the couple. The first,

Our Dream Home perfectly captures

the angst and suspense every home-

builder feels during construction.

The second, Bon Maison, is a mon-

tage of the finished home. This one, set

to soft classical music, moves through

the following images and more: the

cathedral-ceiling-high decorated tree

the family put up for their first Christmas

in the home last year; the stone fire-

place lit with a roaring fire; the six-sided
