The upcoming Kauri Coast Skydiving Carnival is receiving international as well as local interest

“We have around 30 sport jumpers coming to the carnival including jumpers from England, Dubai and two from Australia who are dead keen to jump on the Kauri Coast and see the Kaipara as well as lots of local interest,” says Skydive Ballistic Blondes managing director, Kelly Cullen.

The carnival will run from Friday, August 10 to Sunday, August 12, organised by Northland-based Skydive Ballistic Blondes in conjunction with the Otamatea Aero Club.

“The weekend is shaping up to be fun for everyone from first-time tandem jumpers to those happy to sit back and watch the visual spectacle of freefalling demonstrations.”

There will be charity giveaways including two tandem jumps and a scenic flight from the Otamatea Aero Club at Ruawai airfield.

The carnival kicks off Friday afternoon with a skydiving display at Selwyn Park followed by an evening launch party in Dargaville. Saturday will be an all-day event at the Ruawai airfield with tandem jumps, ‘sporties’ freefalling displays as well as live music, food and entertainment.

The carnival will continue on Sunday at the Ruawai airfield with tandem skydiving and the grand finale will be the charity skydive raffle draw and presentation of the fundraising cheques to the three local high schools,

The Kaipara Lifestyler will be running a competition for a free tandem jump prize on Sunday in support of Circus Kumarani.

The charges were laid two years ago by the Northland Regional Council and were admitted, with the result delivered recently in a reserved decision by Judge Greg Davis in the Whangarei District Court.

The charge involved intermittently discharging effluent from an effluent storage tank to land “in circumstances that may have resulted in the contaminant entering an unnamed contributory of the Waima River” between 11 and 14 September 2010.

The farmer had also been charged with discharging effluent from a storage pond to land on the same property which may have resulted in it entering an unnamed Waima River tributary on an unknown date between 20 August and 14 September 2010.

In his sentencing notes, Judge Davis noted that Graham Owen Fox

“was on holiday at the time these events occurred or had returned that day.That then poses the question as to whether the onus falls upon the farm owner to ensure that there are adequate management systems in place and adequate farm coverage or labour coverage to ensure these events simply did not occur.”

The judge said in his view the draining of the effluent pond was not an event that had occurred quickly or over a short period.

“It is an event that occurred over a number of days and could, with the appropriate checks being put into place, have been discovered and avoided at an early stage in the discharge event.”

Similarly, evidence was given that Fox’s farm manager was working long hours and did not have time to check a pot spreader, however, the issue of ensuring adequate labour was available was one for the farm’s owner.

“In my view, liability for these events must be sheeted home to the farm owner.”

The judge said Fox claimed any environmental damage from his offending must be considered minimal “because

river quality in Northland is generally poor”.

“That is in part because of the runoff from dairy farms that have had an effect on the water quality in the area,” the judge said. “The fact that the water quality of Northland rivers may be poor or not an appropriate standard does not, in my view, create a situation where water quality therefore must remain at that level.”

“The onus must be on all users of the environment to ensure that the environment is appropriately protected and that the standards in an industry that relies upon the environment for its very existence are raised gently but progressively over time.”

The judge said Fox had sought a discharge without conviction, believing the consequences of a conviction would

be out of all proportion to the gravity of his offending.

However, in the judge’s view the offending was serious and agreeing to such a discharge “would send the wrong message to others in the industry”.

“It would in effect allow farm owners to abdicate their responsibilities by delegating their duties as the farm owner to a farm manager.”

The judge accepted the industry was one requiring long hours and that holidays “are no doubt rare and to be cherished”.

“But that, in itself, cannot in my view allow a farm owner to abdicate responsibility for ensuring that all the appropriate systems are in place and working to ensure these events simply do not occur.”

The humble feijoa may be a staple of many a back garden, but one family has been making a sparkling living from the fruit for two decades

the former dairy farm north of Auckland. And it’s 20 years since the family made their first bottle of the sparkling feijoa wine which today is distributed throughout the country.

American-born Dale fell in love with the 172-acre property in its secluded valley and bought it for $25,000, which even in the 70s must have been a bargain. He then had to figure out what to do with it.

Sitting in the sun at Lothlorien, surrounded by the heady scent of feijoa and grapefruit, Dale recalls how he asked his friends at the time if there was a New Zealand fruit, something unusual, which he could grow. They handed him a kiwi fruit, a grapefruit and a feijoa, a small South American fruit little known in the rest of the world.

“I thought the feijoa was such a fantastic flavour and so unique and different from everything else. I thought it would take off – and I still do. It’s a flavour that New Zealand could export to the world.” Then he chuckles under his beard. “We were very naïve. We were city kids. I thought people would beat a path to our door. I didn’t know everyone had a tree in their back yard.”

He and his then partner planted 400 feijoa trees, 800 grapefruit and 700 peach and nectarine and went on to farm the property, in their own hands-on style, for the next few years, milking a small dairy herd, growing fruit and veges and raising a family.

started with horses instead of tractors,” Dale smiles.

But when the feijoas thrived the family was faced with a challenge. “We thought ‘this fruit is great, but nobody wants it. What are we going to do?’”

They tried drying feijoas, bottling them and making wine – all of which worked fine and gave them plenty of produce to give away to friends. Then the sparkling wine was featured on TV, and it became evident a market existed for this unique taste. They acquired a second-hand winery from Huapai and Lothlorien was in business.

Today, the family (sons Cy and Eli are involved in the business) and wine maker Logan Petley produce 50,000 – 60,000 bottles a year and the bubbles are available throughout New Zealand. Lothlorien also produces 12,000 bottles of organic juice each year and is famed for its music festivals which have boasted the likes of Herbs, Kora and Lady6 on stage.

Dale says the sparkling tipple has proved very popular, even amongst “serious wine connoisseurs”, and when a cork is popped the aroma reminds people of their childhood playing under the feijoa trees.

for his father, who was an agricultural contractor. Eventually he completed an apprenticeship as a mechanic, but then ran out of work. “My younger brother had completed a Forestry Science degree, and was working at Topuni forest doing a bit of pruning. I had nothing to do one day, and went and gave him a hand. That was in 1989. I’ve been working in forestry ever since.”

Muscles need CoEnzyme Q10In the May edition we looked at the common muscle

diseases Polymyalgia Rheumatica and Fibromyalgia. I received many calls from readers for more information especially from those with Polymyalgia. If you missed the column call me and I can email a copy. Today we look at the role of Co Enzyme Q10 (CoQ10) with muscle function.

One of the most common forms of muscle pain is statin myopathy. This is a collection of muscular symptoms caused by side effects of commonly prescribed cholesterol lowering statin medication. While statins are very effective at lowering cholesterol they can cause muscle problems. Statins work by inhibiting an enzyme (HMG-CoA reductase) and subsequently reducing mevalonate needed to make cholesterol. Unfortunately mevalonate is also needed for the production of CoQ10.

The main function of CoQ10 is to produce the energy needed for our body demands especially in muscle cells. Think of CoQ10 like the spark plugs and exhaust system in your car engine. Without a good spark a petrol engine will not run properly. Without a good exhaust system engine exhausts will choke the engine and pollute the air. With insufficient CoQ10 the trillions of little engines (mitochondria) in your cells will not produce enough energy and you feel that as weakness, stiffness and pain in your muscles. Additionally CoQ10 is a potent antioxidant to clean up the barrage of toxic free radicals as by products of energy production.

I recommend everyone on statins take 100mg of high grade CoQ10 to compensate. Interestingly I note an increasing number of doctors including cardiologists who suggest CoQ10 supplementation to counter statin myopathy. I also recommend CoQ10 for people with low energy and especially with any autoimmune or neurodegenerative problems. The one I prefer is a trademarked product that is proven to increase cell CoQ10 levels and includes compounds called tocopherols and carotenoids known to help cholesterol balance. In most cases this can help muscle function by restoring lost CoQ10.

For those on statins my first goal is to prevent or reduce any statin myopathy but just as importantly to create a full cardiovascular nutrition programme. I always add a range of nutrients to help with circulation and to protect blood vessels especially coronary arteries from the free radical damage and inflammation central to the formation of artery-blocking plaques. Rob says there is a good industry around this sort of harvesting. It keeps people in the rural areas, and provides a return for farmers. Most of the trees are unsuitable for domestic sawmills, however the export market is providing a major outlet. An average of one hundred and forty-four thousand cubic metres of wood is exported through Marsden Point every month, going to China, India, Korea and Japan.

Working in an export industry means working with the risks of international markets. So Rob usually only works on woodlots during our summer, as in the winter months, Russia and America start supplying China, and the price of logs drop. In addition, the international price of wood has dropped thirty per cent in the last year, as the American economic situation has reduced their domestic demand.

The amount a farmer can get for a small lot of trees is something Rob tries hard to

maximise. “I have a spreadsheet, and I load my estimated hours of work of what I think it will take to do the job, the grade of timber I’m going to get, and it spits out what the margins are. It varies from ten dollars a tonne to the farmer, up to fifty dollars, depending on the age of the trees, how easy it is to get them out, and the quality of the wood.”

“I don’t have a middle man. My brother, the one with the degree, now works for a log exporting company, so I supply direct to them. If I get more for a job than I expected, I pay the farmer a bit more and I give my workers a bit of a bonus, so everybody gets to make a better profit.”

Rob and his wife live in Kaiwaka, and he works from Warkworth in the South, to Matakohe in the West, and Waipu in the North. As a mechanic, he does all his own routine maintenance on the million dollars worth of machines used for the work. He likes to ensure that they are not only well looked after, but they look good. Therefore one of his winter jobs is repainting gear. “It just looks tidier when you come on to a farmer’s job and you don’t have rubbish looking gear.

Everybody treats gear better if it’s looking good. They try not to scratch it!”

As well as running his business, Rob Leslie is active in the local community. He’s the Deputy Chief Fire Officer in the Kaiwaka Fire Brigade, a Kaipara District Council Rural Fire Officer, a judge in the national forestry ‘Thinning to Waste’ Topspot competition, which tests the professional, and the safety skills of forestry teams from Whangarei to Invercargill. And he’s the President of the Mangawhai Dog Club.

near Pahi. A cow had sliced its belly open on the steel spike of a silage feeder.

En route to the job Meredith, originally from Manawatu: “I came up north for the warmer weather, I didn’t want to be up to my armpits in snow” — explains how the job is dictated by the seasonal activities on farms.

“We’re just coming up to calving. There’s also mating, pregnancy testing, vaccination and farmer consults. Then there are the random call outs like this one. Freak accidents. Something like this can come up and throw your whole day out of whack.”

By the time we get to Pahi, farm manager Dennis Martin has the injured cow in the yards. A

25-centimetre gash is clearly visible in the animal’s flank.

Once the cow is secured in the crush, Meredith administers a sedative and sets up her surgery ‘table’ on a 44-gallon drum. The bleeding wound, down to the bone, has to be shaved, thoroughly cleaned and local anaesthetic applied.

The practice employs a dozen vets in four branches covering from Tomarata in the south up to Mangapai in the north. They treat both domestic and farm animals. One minute they can be spaying a cat or treating a dog hit by a car, the next doing a caesarean on an alpaca, treating a cow with a prolapsed uterus or sewing up a horse which has gone through a fence.

“It’s interesting running a routine practice with a medical practice side by side,” says Meredith. “I’ve done a few critical surgeries. I once took a lump the size of a watermelon off a cow’s neck. The strangest job I’ve had to do was walking through someone’s Christmas lunch to treat a dying pet lamb. I had

all my gear and my overalls on and everything. They didn’t want to put the lamb down on Christmas Day.”

Meredith starts to stitch up the cow’s torn muscle. It’s not a job for the squeamish. “Quite a few people fainted at vet school,” she says.

The job has become more technical as farming methods have modernised. Using computer records for herd reporting is an important way to improve stock health and productivity. “It’s more about prevention,” says Meredith. “We’re no longer the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff. One of our vets is a trained farm advisor.”

The stitching moves to the cow’s tough hide. “My mum taught me how to

sew,” Meredith laughs. Dennis holds up the sleepy cow while I act as nurse and provide extra sutures. Meredith’s mobile phone rings. There’s another cow down, somewhere near Tinopai.

As she finishes the stitching she explains what she loves about the job. “I really enjoy the variety. You get to be indoors and outdoors. I’m from a beef and sheep farm, so maybe you stick to what you know. But I enjoy the cats and dogs as well. It’s as much about working with people as animals.”

The Dog Control Act 1996 (‘the Act’) regulates rights and obligations for dog owners.

Section 52 of the Act says that an owner of a dog must keep his or her dog ‘under control’ at all times. If the dog is found ‘at large’ on any land without the consent of the occupier or person in charge of the land, it will be not be under control.

Even if the dog is on its owner’s land, the dog must either be under the direct control of the owner, or confined in such a way it cannot freely leave the land. If a farmer fences the land to stop the dog escaping, and the dog still manages to escape, it will not be good enough to argue it was fenced; clearly the fence was not sufficient to control the dog, and the Act will have been breached.

If your dog is out of your land, and is not under control, you can be prosecuted.

Perhaps more importantly, your dog can be seized. If you don’t pay the heavy fines after the dog has been seized, it may be destroyed.

As an aside, there is a separate offence for dogs which bother stock of another farmer. Section 61 of the Act notes that an owner of stock (or poultry) who sees a dog at large amongst the stock may have a District Court require a dog owner to keep the dog under proper restraint. Failure to restrain the dog will lead to substantial fines. If the

“Ruralco has been set up to specialise in on farm stock valuations, finance and trading,” said Allan, who farms both at Matakohe and in the Hawke’s Bay hinterland adjacent to the Ureweras.

“Allan formed Ruralco and we decided to work together to establish ourselves as agents in Northland — with the beauty of it being that we are both in the Northland farming sector already,” said Rod. “It’s our aim to get well established and we have a specialised knowledge of the agency side of things.”

Allan and Rob have worked for many years for major New Zealand stock agencies and certainly ‘know the ropes’. Rob can also add a number of years across the ditch, as a slightly younger man, aerial mustering stock with fixed wing aircraft in the vast and remote stretches of the Australian outback.

He thus brings a certain flair to the company, and it’s his voice that co-ordinates the bidding at rural saleyards.

The company is shortly to introduce on-farm auctions, with an innovative trailer pen, being custom designed by engineer Gary Crosby from Mangawhai.

A flexible roll-bar mounted behind the bike seat can support tonnes of weight and is seen as a lifesaver in a country where quad-bike accidents, both on the farm and in recreation use, are responsible for a huge toll in injuries and fatalities.

Mr Vernon Suckling, from Ag Tech Industries Ltd in Dargaville, Northland, has won the Golden Standard Award for Innovation at the Mystery Creek Fieldays for his invention.

The device attracted the attention of Prime Minister John Key at Mystery Creek, as well as from innovation scouts from around the world. It is protected by patents.

“I took the ATV Lifeguard as we have called it to Mystery Creek because a lot of people go there to look for new ideas,” said Mr Suckling.

“I did not think of an award or anything. I was just looking to see it give others a chance in an accident.”

He was inspired to create ATV Lifeguard because crushing is the most common cause of injury and death in quad bike accidents.

The quad will also stop rolling a lot quicker with the device acting as a shock absorber, reducing bounce and movement — in short preventing more rolls of an upturned quad.

Production of the device is expected to get underway before the end of the year and it has already won approval from New Zealand’s Industrial Research Ltd., the Department of Labour, Australian Health and Safety, Land Corp NZ and the ACC.

Statistics on quad bike accidents tell their own story. In 2011, 41 kiwi workers died and, of the deaths last year, 15 were in the agriculture industry — more than a third of all deaths. The majority of these deaths involved vehicles or machinery — four were quad bike accidents.

The statistics reinforce the need for quad bike safety and the work being done to improve this.

At the beginning of this year there was a flurry of media reports about quad bike accidents across the country — in that time there were at least 11 separate incidents involving 13 people — with an even split between those that were work-related on the farm and recreational accidents. The high number of people being injured on quad bikes prompted the Department and ACC to release a statement in January reminding riders of the dangers of not adhering to safety rules. Quad bike-related claims cost ACC approximately $8.6 million last year — with the emotional costs even higher.

City dogs don’t know how easy they have it. In the country, dogs are a vital working part of many farms — not just man’s best friend but also his hardest working colleague! Even harder work is in order for hunting dogs, who are expected not only to track the scent of prey, but also to jump in if a boar looks like making a break toward their master…

There are numerous ‘superior’ brands of dog food out there which promise great taste and scientific formulation. A lot of the science behind feeding your dog comes down to calories. Humans always seem to be trying to avoid these, but in terms of a hard-working dog, more calories in a smaller, denser amount of food are definitely better. Salt licks for better animal healthAs well as sodium, natural salt

licks provided herds of animals (as diverse as reindeer, giraffes, elephants and aurochs cattle) with zinc, calcium and phosphorous… trace minerals which living bodies need to aid their natural chemical processes. An easy illustration of the power of trace elements is the use of lithium as a neurochemical balancing agent… this metal derived from salt is one of the most powerful tools of modern mental health treatment. It’s also used to make long lasting batteries!

Animals know instinctively that they need to top up their bodies with salt and minerals. Humans, on the other hand, insist on having scientific data to back up what is literally a ‘gut instinct’. It’s no surprise that mammals (like us, and like cows, horses and sheep) need salt… after all, if we believe Charles Darwin we all evolved from the primordial soup of the sea — an environment saturated with life-giving salt.

Today, farmers supplement the sodium and minerals available from forage with salt tubs and salt licks formulated scientifically. While they’re not likely to attract many elephants or giraffes (at least not in New Zealand), the principle remains the same. Animals with access to salt and the other trace elements associated with it are healthier, with more robust immune

systems and greater resistance to disease and the assault of winter weather.

Salt is, of course, sodium chloride, which explains a little of how it benefits living tissue. Chloride is especially important in cattle as it is necessary for the production of gastric acid — the fuel for digestion that turns grass into muscle mass and milk! Sodium, along with chloride, helps maintain the acid to alkaline balance inside the body. It’s a delicate balance indeed, and must be maintained for cellular health, growth, and healing.

Calcium is famous for building strong bones, but think of where we get our calcium from. Now consider how much calcium a milk producing cow should need to pass on that goodness to hundreds of humans! Zinc, another vital element found in salt licks, is essential for the body to produce insulin, as well as for growth and for healing.

Our modern world now understands the sophisticated nature of naturally occurring Rock Salt, which free-roaming animals in their natural habitat will travel long distances for.

The two new protein-optimised calf feeds have been independently formulated so that excessive protein is not passing through the animals.

“Our new calf feeds target heifer replacement rearing in a New Zealand setting,” explains Ravensdown Nutrition Business Manager, Stephen Fink. “Rather than launching a high-protein product in isolation, we looked at the whole nutritional environment for these farmers and calves.”

“In heifer replacement situations, heifers are being fed colostrum then whole milk from the vat, which are both high-protein feeds. Then they go on to high-protein dairy pasture. So we’ve dropped the protein levels in these feeds to compensate for increased protein in the pasture in a dairy situation,” said Stephen.

“Calves can only absorb so much protein and, of course, unused protein will exit the body as nitrogen, which could unnecessarily lift nitrogen loading on dairy farms,” added Stephen.

The optimum-protein calf pellets, RAVCALF18 and RAVCALF14, will be manufactured by two small and well-established local manufacturers based in Auckland and Palmerston North.

RAVCALF18 is designed as a supplement for heifer calves being fed a diet of milk and/or grass through to desired weaning weights of around 70kg. RAVCALF14 is designed as a supplement to grass for calves weaned off milk while transitioning to a grass diet. Both feeds contain rumensin as a coccidiostat.

“Pricing for these products, as well as our re-launched milk powder products, will be very competitive because we exist to keep these input costs down low. Other calf feeds sold here are manufactured by Canadian and Australian-owned companies.

As a New Zealand co-operative, we aim to lower the price to our shareholders and pass profi ts back to our farmers. It is a great opportunity to put our co-operative values into calf feed market.”

Innovation award for stock measurement

The answer appears to be the Tru-Test XRS EID stick reader, launched by Tru-Test Group late last year. Its success has been refl ected in it receiving a supreme award for innovation in New Zealand agriculture — NZ Agribusiness Product award.

The reader is revolutionising farmers’ ability to measure large numbers of stock through the yards with a read-rate far greater than anything else in the market. It also takes the word vin class battery life and ergonomics.

In the United States, the New Zealand designed and manufactured XRS achieved 12 months sales in just 12 weeks.

“The agri-tech industry’s focus to date has been largely on ‘read range’ — the maximum distance between the reader and the animal,” said Tru-Test Group product manager, Shane Dooley.

“While range is undoubtedly

important and a key feature of the XRS, the number one requirement of a portable reader is the ability to put large numbers of animals through quickly, and to measure accurately.”

“As measuring animal performance and making critical management decisions from this data is increasingly important to farmers, we felt we needed to do everything we could NOT to discourage farmers from measuring as regularly as possible. The XRS is the response.”

In addition to signifi cantly increased speed — in advance of 800 reads per minute — the XRS addresses the other bugbear in portable readers — battery life. The XRS has at least twice the continuous operating time between re-charges of any other device, reading up to 500,000 tags on one battery charge — equivalent to around 20 hours of continuous use in the fi eld.

With the payout high and interest low, it’s a really good time to fix the things that are causing some grief around the Dairy.

Before you upgrade to new Milfos cup removers or a Milfos Variable Drive Vacuum System it would be sensible to evaluate things that could impact on your proposed upgrade.

Sparkies generally do a great job, however, we regularly come across wiring of all sorts that has been installed incorrectly.

For instance we see the right cable used on say, a milk pump controller, but still bundled with everything else so it creates interference with the controller and bingo, a slightly crazy controller. Unless you know what to look for it can be a painful process to find as it looks like a faulty controller.

This is important for all sorts of systems from pulsation controllers to cup removers and the more sophisticated the system the more careful you have to be. We recommend keeping data cables as far away from power as possible.

We have all heard about stray voltage, yes it does exist and can cause all sorts of issues, we have found a major source is the cable and terminations between Variable drives and Motors.

There is a lot of documentation supplied with variable drives with regard to the cable to be used and metal glands for terminations etc, these are minimums and a good Sparky will follow manufacturer’s recommendations or better. If in doubt get it checked.

Don’t forget the effluent or water pump, same deal, and move the electric fence unit to the implement shed, they can be an interference nasty in the dairy.

It was fantastic to see many of our clients and to meet so many others interested in our products. Thanks for your company and enthusiasm, it made our Fieldays special.

After a long and often contentious eight year wait, the National Animal Identification and Tracing (NAIT) scheme finally arrived on July 1st 2012 for cattle (with deer to follow in March).

The benefits to the industry are well reported, with birth to processing traceability, and the ability to react quickly to biosecurity threats if they arise.

The Radio Frequency Identification Device (RFID) eartags are the key to the system, with a range of around a metre, depending on tag brand and model.

The RFID ear tag technology does one thing and that is to individually identify an animal. In this respect it

can also be used for a number of other things.

RFID is an integral part of herd management and is used in many ways around the milking parlour. Automatic drafting is quite common, as is in bail animal ID on rotary milking machines (which can be linked to milk data and feeding decisions), and walk over weighing just to name a few.

What is an initial expense in the tags can lead to savings over time with easy automatic drafting during mating or improvements in herd information such as weight or in bail data like yield, fat, protein, lactose, and mastitis detection. There are a lot of options to choose from.

Woolover Calf Covers are a natural thermal protector

The basic requirements of a newborn calf are a dry, warm and draught-free environment. Woolover calf covers offer farmers the fl exibility to provide these conditions at a low cost. The basic requirement is WARMTH. Woolover calf covers are constructed using a high percentage of WOOL, which has the ability to absorb up to 30% moisture and still feel dry thus retaining the calves natural body heat and most importantly BREATHE.

TRIAL DATA

During the northern winter 97/98 Woolover Limited commissioned the North Dakota State University in Fargo (USA) to trial covers on both dairy and beef calves. On average dairy calves that were covered gained 14 lb more than uncovered calves over the 65 day trial period. This was in spite of the average low temperature being 5°C higher than normal during the trial.These calves were in dome hutches. The temperature ranged from (plus) 15°C to a low of minus 11°C.

Differences in Average Daily Weight Gain (ADG) were most pronounced during the fi rst three weeks of a calf’s life, with an ADG for blanketed calves of 1.15 lb versus 0.82 lb (unblanketed). Dr J W Schroeder (the NSDU extension dairy specialist) believes that the blanketed calves benefi ted from a jumpstart in weight gain that they maintained throughout the course of the trial. At six months of age blanketed calves that exhibited greater early postpartum ADG also maintained a numerical performance advantage in rate of growth at later stages of calf development than unblanketed calves.

Beef calves running with their mothers had an average weight gain of 38lb more than the unblanketed control group at 118 days of age.

Stimulating soil biological activity — how and why? Part 1

In the next article we will look at whether these products are possibly effective or basically fit into the ‘snake-oil’ category, but in this article let’s take a step back in history and look at what happens when we introduce the ryegrass/clover grazed pasture system.

Under the pre-European natural forests, scrub and native grasses, soil organic matter levels were typically very low. This is because the input of new nutrients — almost solely from the weathering of soil minerals — was very slow. This greatly limited the rate of growth of vegetation, so plant species evolved that could cope with this by growing very slowly themselves. Likewise, the soil organic matter had a slow rate of turnover, because the soil microbes that do this require nutrients also. Nutrient losses from this system were extremely low.

Then the ryegrass/clover pastures and many different crops were introduced. These had far more growth potential, especially in our growth-friendly climate,

but it was soon discovered that to achieve this growth potential required ‘capital’ applications of fertiliser and subsequent annual ‘maintenance’ applications of several major and trace elements.

Under this system, pasture production typically reached its potential within 3-5 years, whereas soil organic matter levels tended to increase over a 10-15 year period before reaching a new plateau, typically 50% higher than the original level. Essentially, the new plateau is reached when increasing soil microbial activity finally ‘catches up’ with the new higher rate of addition of organic matter — plant residues and excreta mainly — into the soil. These provide carbon, protein and energy for soil microbes to feed on.

So why does it reach a new plateau, instead of coming back down again? Simply because it would be counter-productive for the soil microbes for this to happen. View it as a term bank deposit. It makes sense to grow this to a size big enough to live on the ‘interest’ — in this case the pool of mineralisable organic matter.

The importance of soil biological activity is being realised by more and more farmers and farming organisations, and many companies are now promoting products that are claimed to stimulate it and by doing so increase production

Once you have to live on the capital as well, it’s eventually going to be over Rover.

The 10-15 years it takes for the soil organic matter to reach a new plateau can be greatly reduced if, and it’s a big if on hill country properties, there are outside sources of soil organic matter such as chicken manure that can be brought in (as in a vege garden), or effluent irrigated. Farmers are aware how much more soil organic matter there is in animal campsites, which receive high inputs of excreta.

Many farmers have noted that the best paddocks on their farm have twice the pasture production or crop yield of the poorest paddocks, even in some cases if total soil organic matter and nutrient levels are similar. When this is the case, and slope, aspect, drainage and soil types are the same, it is a safe bet that the difference is soil microbial activity. It always surprises me that the addition of earthworms at least isn’t given as much attention as fertiliser in pasture development, and in dairy farm conversions.

The most efficient earthworm species for pasture systems are not native to New Zealand. They were introduced widely but not exhaustively in the 1930s-1950s, and some modern farming practices — such as high N use and inadequate control of soil aluminium levels — can make life hard for them and other soil biology.

So, given a certain-sized pool of soil organic matter, is their any advantage — to production or sustainability — of increasing the rate of cycling of this organic matter; that is, in increasing soil microbial activity? And what products or practices can do it? Also, there is anecdotal evidence that both the amount and activity of soil organic matter is declining on intensive dairy farms. Why is this happening, and what are the implications? In the next article, we look at these questions

Approved by the ACVM as an aid in the prevention and treatment of calf scours caused by cryptosporidium, this is available as a stand-alone product without the addition of rotavirus. This is particularly useful in cases where the herd has been vaccinated for rotavirus, but the farm has a history of cryptosporidium parvum scours in their calves.

Calves of any age or weight can be treated at the same dosage rate. For prevention, the recommended dose is 10 grams per calf per day for fi ve days. For treatment, dose calves with 10 g twice daily for the fi rst day, then 5 g twice daily for three to seven days.

Appropriate rehydration is essential and Rotagen can be used in conjunction with electrolytes or milk feeding.

Although semi-retired, he is still involved with the farming community and his latest venture is encouraging farmers to donate a cow to a good cause.

Frank began his career in Kumeu where he met his wife Fay. After a number of years working in Paeroa and Kaikohe, they settled with their family in Whangarei where Frank took up the role of stock agent and auctioneer for Wrightson NMA.

“I really enjoyed working with the people. You built up close relationships based on trust, and that continued down through the generations. I have often dealt with not only

the original farmers, but also their sons and the grandsons,” says Frank.

In earlier times, agents were the main source of information for farmers. Not only did they advise on current market prices and valued livestock for sale or the meatworks, they also lent a listening ear and brought welcome news from the district, particularly in remote areas.

“Everybody helped each other in the community. When I was a member of the Kaikohe senior rugby team we would go along to the local dances to help the police.”

Cows for a causeFrank is also well-known as a rugby

player having represented North Auckland in the 60s and 70s.

“I had the pleasure of playing for North Auckland in 1971 when we took the Ranfurly Shield from Auckland. That was a good game.”

Frank was also in the All Blacks reserves for the 1965 game against South Africa.

Although semi-retired, he still works as a deer farmer agent and continues to stay involved with the farming sector. His recent undertaking has been working with Project Promise on the Cull a Cow initiative.

Project Promise is a fund set up by the Northland Community Foundation to build a new cancer treatment facility in Whangarei.

Frank Colthurst is a well-known name in the North as a livestock agent and rugby great, and in more recent times as a deer agent

“Farmers simply mention to their agent that they would like to donate stock and the meat works will ensure that the proceeds from the animal go directly to the fund. Another option is to donate $1000 for a personalised brick on the ‘BNZ community wall’ in the reception area of the new oncology unit.”

A receipt is issued to the farmer and any donation is eligible for an IRD tax rebate of up to 33%.
