MotivationNorthern Eurasia (NE) is the largest landmass, the largest terrestrial reservoir of organic carbonActive land use changes and socio-economic transformationsNorthern Eurasia is believed to play a critical role in global change; research interest is high (e.g. NEESPI)NE remains a major source of uncertainly in global estimates of
Area of forest, peatland, and other land cover typesCarbon pools and fluxWater discharge, etc.

The Roots
Global Observation of Forest Cover (GOFC) Boreal Forest Workshop (Novosibirsk, Russia, August 2000)Regional workshop for Western Russia-Fennoscandiaregion (St. Petersburg, Russia, June 2001)Northern Eurasia Earth Science Partnership Initiative (NEESPI) workshops (Suzdal’, April 2003; Yalta, September 2003) “Observational Data in Support of NEESPI”, St. Petersburg, Feb. 23-26, 2004

NERIN emerged as a network of people, institutions, projectsThe primary goal of NERIN is to promote and coordinate the production and provision of Earth System observations for a wide range of user communities in Northern Eurasia and to the global Earth Science community.Under development is the network of points of contact and virtual community (http://www.fao.org/gtos/gofc-gold/index.html)

Features of forest fire monitoring system for Russia
• Access to current and historical data • Data on active fires detected with AVHRR and MODIS• Data on ground and aircraft observation of large fires
(>200 ha)• Long-term archive of data/products operationally
derived from AVHRR and MODIS observation data• System of informational servers to provide
access to the data http://www.nffc.aviales.ru

Network DevelopmentsE. Loupian and A. Sukhinin on the GOFC/GOLD Fire Implementation Team (data systems and new sensors)Several products registered in NERIN metadata baseGOFC/GOLD-Fire Regional workshop: second day of Russian Remote Sensing Symposium (November 16-18 2004) Contacts established with additional countries in Northern Eurasia (Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Belarus)Russia ratified the Kyoto protocol• satellite-based fire products gaining official status• formal national satellite-based fire monitoring network in Russia
• opportunity, but also a challengeConclusion: Network is mature – regional champions are taking over initiative

The goal: to provide for the wide user community access to satellite-based data and products on dynamics of terrestrial ecosystems in Northern EurasiaFunded by Russian Fund of Fundamental ResearchData on burnt area during 2000-2003 are already available through the TerraNorte web-site (http://tem.iki.rssi.ru)

NELDA (Northern Eurasia Landcover Dynamics Analysis)
Large-scale land cover change project with multiple test sites distributed across the temperate and boreal regionsTest sites will be used to:• validate global land cover products • characterize and monitor the distribution and change of major types
landcover using Landsat, ASTER, and IRS imagery and ground-based measurements,
• develop methods for the future continental-scale monitoring with moderate- to coarse- resolution sensors.
Focus on types of land cover and land use change that are significant in different parts of Northern EurasiaEstablish a base for other studies of land-cover within the scope of GOFC-GOLD, and other interested programs such as NEESPITeam NELDA is being established

MODIS IGBP land cover product identifies only 0.2% of the land area as permanent wetlandsOur models estimate about 9 % in undisturbed peatlands and 1 % in mined peatlands
