The new 50/50 partnership will essentially see Apache developing gas supplies through 644,000 acres in the Horn River and Liard basins with Chevron being responsible for the pipeline and plant. The project has already received environmental certification and and export licence but an expected full on construction announcement originally thought to have been made in 2012 did not materialize. A construction announcement was based on contracts to sell LNG but none were signed. Reports said there was difficulty in persuading Asian customers to pay a price needed for the project to be profitable. “This agreement is a milestone for two principal reasons: Chevron is the premier LNG developer in the world today with longstanding relationships in key Asian markets, and the new structure will enable Apache to unlock the tremendous potential at Liard, one of the most prolific shale gas basins in North America,” said G. Steven Farris, Apache’s chairman and chief executive officer in a press release. Even without a formal construction start, Kitimat LNG is currently completing front- end engineering and design, and early site work is under way. Current plans call for two liquefaction facilities within the plant space, each with expected capacity of five million tons of LNG per year (about 750 million cubic feet of gas per day). Kitimat LNG’s export licence is good for 20 years. The project has significant backing from the Haisla First Nation which stands to gain a substantial economic benefit. Plant facilities would be located on Haisla land and annual payments would be made to the Haisla. Other native groups also approve of the project but a Wet’suwet’en clan near Smithers objects. Kitimat LNG is one of four large pipeline and plant projects in the works in the northwest. Out of the four, it is the most advanced thanks to environmental and export approval. Big hitter joins northwest LNG paradeBy Staff WriterTHE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

KITIMAT - The northwestern LNG situation just got a lot more interesting now that Chevron Canada has bought into the Paci c Trails Pipeline and accompanying LNG plant called Kitimat LNG.

It did so just before Christmas by buying a majority of the 30 per cent each that Encana and EOG Resources held in the project.

Apache, the third major player of the original group, remains but it has now increased its 40 per cent of the project to 50 per cent.

The new 50/50 partnership will essentially see Apache developing gas supplies through 644,000 acres in the Horn River

and Liard basins with Chevron being responsible for the pipeline and plant.

The project has already received environmental certi cation and and export licence but an expected full on construction announcement originally thought to have been made in 2012 did not materialize.

A construction announcement was based on contracts to sell LNG but none were signed.

Reports said there was dif culty in persuading Asian customers to pay a price needed for the project to be pro table.

“This agreement is a milestone for two principal reasons: Chevron is the premier LNG developer in the world today with longstanding

relationships in key Asian markets, and the new structure will enable Apache to unlock the tremendous potential at Liard, one of the most proli c shale gas basins in North America,” said G. Steven Farris, Apache’s chairman and chief executive of cer in a press release.

Even without a formal construction start, Kitimat LNG is currently completing front-end engineering and design, and early site work is under way.

Current plans call for two liquefaction facilities within the plant space, each with expected capacity of ve million tons of LNG per year (about 750 million cubic feet of gas per day).

Kitimat LNG’s export licence is good for 20 years.

The project has signi cant backing from the Haisla First Nation which stands to gain a substantial economic bene t.

A smaller project would use the capacity of the existing Paci c Northern Gas.

RCMP shoot wolf in Prince Rupert, second shot in a weekBy Martina PerryTHE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

PRINCE RUPERT - Under a week af-ter a conservation officer from Terrace shot and killed a wolf in Prince Ru-pert, a second was put down over the holidays.

Conservation of cer Dale Kluivers told the Prince Rupert Northern View he was noti ed of another wolf being termi-

nated and was told an RCMP member shot the animal on Dec. 23. Kluivers killed the rst wolf on Dec. 18 after receiving over 70 calls regarding wolf sightings in the past two months.

Constable Matt Ericson, spokesman for the Prince Rupert RCMP, con rmed of cers took down a wolf in the Frederick Street area, near Camarillo Road due to concerns for public safety.

“Of cers did what they had to do… The

wolf wasn’t showing any signs of fear to-wards humans. Of cers tried to scare the ani-mal, however it kept approaching members,” Ericson said.

Ericson said RCMP of cers shot the wild animal once, however it did not in-stantly kill the animal and the wolf at-tempted to jump up and attack an of cer.

Members had to shoot the animal once again before it was deceased.

Conservation and RCMP of cers re-mind people if they see a wolf to stay at least 100 metres away and try to make themselves look larger by raising their arms and wav-ing them in the air. If a wolf approaches, people are encouraged to grab a large stick or rock and throw it at the animal to scare it away.

The public is also reminded not to turn their backs to wolves, but to back away slow-ly.

Totem pole design now to reflect earthquakeBy Shaun ThomasTHE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

HAID GWAII - The impact of the magnitude 7.7 earthquake that rocked the North Coast on Oct. 27 will be immortalized in the rst totem pole to be erected in Gwaii Haanas National Park in over a century.

As reported in the Nov. 23 Northern Connector, Haida carver Jaalen Edenshaw will be carving out a 42-foot totem pole to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the agreement that established Gwaii Haanas. But now the design of the pole, which was done to link the land, the sea and the people responsible for protecting most of Graham Island, will include “the supernatural being responsible for earthquakes”.

“I wanted to include Sacred-One-Standing-and-Moving to acknowledge

his power after he shifted and shook Haida Gwaii,” said Edenshaw.

The gure will be represented by a Wasgo, or a supernatural Sea-wolf. In the story of Sacred-One-Standing-and-Moving, a man whose younger brothers all disappeared kills a Wasgo to avenge their deaths. He becomes stronger and stronger and wears the Wasgo skin to win a contest for who will become the supernatural being that holds up Haida Gwaii.

Edenshaw said the desire to change the design also stems from the loss of the pools at Hot Spring Island, an area of signi cant cultural and tourism importance, that dried up after the earthquake.

“By honouring Sacred-One-Standing-and-Moving maybe I am hoping he will give the hot spring back to us,” he said.

Prince Rupert mayor reflects on 2012 and looks ahead to 2013By Martina PerryTHE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

PRINCE RUPERT - With 2012 now in the history books, Prince Rupert Mayor Jack Mussallem was optimistic while speaking with the Prince Rupert North-ern View about the past year’s highlights and the year to come.

Mussallem considers successes in Prince Rupert’s industrial sector as a highlight in 2012, mentioning the Prince Rupert Port Authority’s “banner year”.

“Prince Rupert is being recognized more and more for the opportunities the port provides importers and exporters of products,” he said.

Mussallem said more Rupertities getting hired at port operations, such as the additional longshore hiring in the spring, has been a highlight in 2012.

“There’s some optimism in the community as more expansion is expected in coming years,” Mussallem said.

The second highlight the May-or brought forward was the growth in local business, stating 13 new busi-nesses have opened in the last 20 months.

Another highlight Mussallem re- ected on was work that has been done on the cessation of train whis-tling to make living conditions bet-ter for residents in certain areas of the community.

Moving forward in 2013, Mus-sallem said he would like to see the Watson Island site sold and the ex-isting facilities taken down and re-developed, and he hopes the com-

munity will see a rebound in the salmon shing industry.

In the coming year Mussallem says council will be “watching with interest on what is being pro-posed and scheduled for development in 2013”, in-cluding ensuring the wood pellet plant adheres to the strict guidelines for dust and noise when it’s in operation.

“Prince Rupert is being recognized more and more...”

There’s no mistaking the importance of Kitimat, B.C., to the Gateway project. It’s where the pipeline ends, and it’s where marine operations begin.

I’d like to set the record straight on why we chose Kitimat, at the head of the Douglas Channel, as the site for Gateway’s marine terminal. The answer took thousands of hours of research, planning, engineering, environmental science, oceanography consultation, weather monitoring, and simulation. But the simple reason is . . . safety, all the way.

The Douglas Channel is one of the widest and deepest inland waterways on North America’s west coast. Government research had already determined Kitimat to be among the safest ports in B.C., and about 1,500 tankers carrying petrochemicals have docked safely at Kitimat over the past quarter-century.

Strategically speaking, Kitimat provides the lowest environmental risk for all aspects of Gateway operations. It offers a safer endpoint for the pipeline route, from a geotechnical perspective. The marine terminal at Kitimat also provides safe approaches for tanker traffi c — with a suitable turning basin in Kitimat Arm, and natural deep-water berths that are sheltered from open-water wave conditions.

At its very narrowest, the Douglas Channel is 1.4 kilometres wide — three times wider than Transport Canada’s recommended width for two-way tanker traffi c. Water depths in the marine channels are up to several hundred metres.

As an added measure, full simulations of vessel traffi c in the Douglas Channel were carried out at a world-leading facility in Denmark. It tested the largest proposed vessels in environmental conditions that tankers would experience in the marine channels. The result was a thumbs-up on the shipping route, endorsed by both government departments and the British Columbia Coast Pilots.

Why Kitimat? Why the Douglas Channel? It’s the safe option for Gateway.

Marlins take overall points at meetContributedFor The NorTherN coNNecTor

KITIMAT - The Kitimat Marlins hosted a regional swim meet near the end of December that saw 85 swimmers from around the region attend. The Marlins had some fantastic results with six pool records broken and medalists in almost every age category. With the strong swimming of all Marlin swimmers the Marlins were able to win the meet for overall points. Prince Rupert finished second, Smithers third and Terrace fourth respectively.

Leading the way Kyler Cordeiro (17) broke five pool records in the 15 and over boys division. He broke his own record in 50 meter backstroke by 4\10ths of a second. He broke the 100 meter freestyle record by a mere seven one hundredths of a second set last year by former Smithers now UVIC swimmer Brett Zollen. He also broke the 400 meter freestyle record by three seconds, the 800 freestyle record by two seconds while swimming his 1500 meter freestyle which he also broke the record for by 10 seconds. All three of those records were set last season by Smithers’ now University of Waterloo swimmer Brian Dohler. Cordeiro took the gold medal in overall points in the division.

In the 13\14 boys division second year swimmer Brander Pacheco (14) broke his first pool record in the 200 meter butterfly. He shaved a solid 5 seconds off the previous mark set 15 years earlier by Prince Rupert swimmer Chris Marcinkiewicz. Pacheco went on to take the silver medal in the division.

The Marlins now have four swimmers who hold pool records. Alivia Salema and Kleanza Cathers hold pool records as well in the 11\12 girls age group. There are pool records still standing as far back as the mid 1970s.

In the 13\14 girls division Kleanza Cathers made her first AAA Provincial qualifying standard for the 13 year old girls division. She is now welcome to attend AAA Provincial championships in Victoria in March and UBC in July. Cathers

swam 100 per cent personal best times in all seven of her races on her way to the gold in the 13\14 girls division.

Also taking the gold for overall points was Hannah Pearson(10) in the 10 and under girls division. And the future looks bright for the Marlins as Leah Desousa (10) and Charlotte Collier (10) tied for the bronze medal in the division as well and both swam to 100 per cent personal

best times.Ethan Velho (12)

had an excellent swim meet swimming to 100 per cent personal best times in all 7 of his races and took the silver medal for overall points in the division.

Alivia Salema (12) took the silver medal in the 11-12 girls division and Robyn Alderman (16) took home the bronze medal in the 15 and over girls division respectively.

There were seven

other swimmers who also did the tough task of swimming 100 per cent personal best times. They were Ben Anker (14), Nicholas Cordeiro, (14), Raychel Davies (12), Madison Hauki (12), Madison Landry(11), Julia Piroso (15) and Morgan Winterburn (12)

Winterburn also had the largest one swim improvement for the Marlins, a 46 second improvement in the 800 meter freestyle.
