Bay Area Hikes and Trails Guide

(Prepared by the AILA Northern California Chapter)

Easily Accessible/Within the City

1. Angel Island: Take a ferry boat, go for a hike, and visit the Immigration Station

Angel Island State Park, the largest island in the San Francisco Bay offers some of the best views of the surrounding Bay Area. With great hiking trails and many other recreational opportunities readily available, Angel Island is truly a hidden gem in the midst of the urban Bay Area.

Notably, from 1910 to 1940, the U.S. Immigration Station processed hundreds of thousands of immigrants- the majority from China. During World War II, Japanese, and German POWs were detained at the Station before being sent to facilities farther inland.

General Information: (415) 435-5537 or visit: https://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=468

2. Lands End Trail from the Cliff House to Fort Mason: approximately 6 miles of stunning hiking.

Take a bus or taxi to the Cliff House, a restaurant perched above the cliffs, just north of Ocean Beach. Meander past the Seal Rocks, Sutro Baths, the Legion of Honor Museum, and along cliffs with gorgeous vistas of the Marin Headlands and the Golden Gate Bridge. Take a taxi or a bus back to Union Square from Fort Mason, or stop in at Greens restaurant – vegetarian, but you won’t miss the meat!

Visit: http://www.parksconservancy.org/assets/visit-your-parks/park-sites/pdfs/image_1_2474.pdf

3. Ocean Beach and Baker Beach: surf and sand near the feet of the Golden Gate Bridge

Page 5: NORTHERN CALIFORNIA CHAPTER VISITOR GUIDES · NORTHERN CALIFORNIA CHAPTER VISITOR GUIDES. INCLUDED MATERIALS: ... San Francisco Restaurant & Activity Guide 2018 Visitor’s Guide:

Keep in mind that San Francisco is known for its fog, so even on a warm day, the beach may be chilly. That said, Ocean and Baker are nice beaches to check out, and have gorgeous views of the Golden Gate Bridge. Go fly a kite or toss a Frisbee around!

For Ocean Beach, visit: http://www.parksconservancy.org/visit/park-sites/ocean-beach.html

For Baker Beach, visit: http://www.parksconservancy.org/visit/park-sites/baker-beach.html

4. Telegraph Hill and Coit Tower- Beautiful hilly walk in the center of San Francisco

Begin at Embarcadero at the bottom of Telegraph Hill. Walk up the built-in steps and listen for the famous wild parrots of Telegraph Hill. Beware, though. The hill is steep, but you can stop to rest and admire the gardens along the staircase. You’ll end at Coit Tower, an emblem of the San Francisco skyline with 1934 murals and an observation deck with views of the city and the Bay.

Visit: http://sfrecpark.org/destination/telegraph-hill-pioneer-park/coit-tower/

5. Golden Gate Park – walking, jogging, rollerblading, other attractions.

This is the third most visited park in the United States. The park is free to visit during the day, however popular attractions charge admission, such as deYoung Museum, California Academy of Sciences and Conservatory of Flowers. The park is filled with gardens, museums, art, flowers, trees, lakes, birds and wildlife.

Visit: http://www.golden-gate-park.com/

6. Mount Davidson: an easy, 1 mile round trip hike of SF’s highest of its 44 hills (927 feet).

Take a cab or bus to the junction of Dalewood and Lansdale, or the BART to Glen Park and walk from there. The top offers views (barring fog, of course) of San Bruno mountain to the south, and the city to the north and east.

Visit: http://www.mountdavidsoncross.org

7. McClaren Park: a 1.6 mile, hilly ramble through San Francisco’s largest park. Allow 1 hour.

A 317-acre park that feels more like an open space preserve than a park in the center of the city.

Visit: http://www.bahiker.com/sfhikes/mclaren.html

Further Afield/Outside the City

8. Redwood Regional Park (Oakland): gorgeous redwoods surround you on countless hiking trails (all levels)

This hidden gem is close to San Francisco and much less crowded than Muir Woods (see below). The Stream Trail hike is flat and takes you under the shelter of the great redwoods. Other hikes stemming off of it take you up into the hills. Bring a picnic! There are tables sprinkled throughout the various trails.

The main entrance, Redwood Gate, is on Redwood Road in Oakland about two miles east of Skyline Blvd.

Visit: http://www.ebparks.org/parks/redwood#about

9. Marin Headlands (North): hiking, biking and exploring just across the Golden Gate Bridge.

One of the most unique areas in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, the Marin Headlands carries a long history- from the Miwok Indians to the Military, including historic Fort Barry and Fort Cronkhite, the NIKE Missile site, and the 150-year-old Point Bonita lighthouse. Other attractions include varied hiking trails, dog friendly Rodeo Beach, and astonishing views of the coast and San Francisco.

Visit: http://www.nps.gov/goga/marin-headlands.htm and http://www.parksconservancy.org/visit/park-sites/marin-headlands.html

10. Muir Woods (North): stroll under giant, majestic redwoods.

Old growth coastal redwoods that are found only between Monterey, California, and Oregon along the Pacific coast. Muir Woods is just 12 miles north of the city. The monument has easy paved trails with lots of information, a gift shop and facilities. Try to arrive early in the morning because the parking lots fill up.

Visit: http://www.nps.gov/muwo/index.htm and http://www.nps.gov/goga/planyourvisit/upload/map-muwo-2.pdf

11. San Bruno Mountain (South): 12 miles of hiking, riding and jogging trails on the peninsula.

San Bruno Mountain Park is a landmark of local and regional significance, standing as a unique open-space island in the midst of the peninsula's urbanization at the northern end of the Santa Cruz Mountain Range. The mountain's ridge line runs in an east-west configuration, with considerable slopes and elevations ranging from 250 feet to 1,314 feet at the summit. The 2,326 acres of rugged landscape offer excellent hiking opportunities and outstanding views of San Francisco and the Central Bay Area.

Visit: http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=518 and http://www.co.sanmateo.ca.us

12. Montara State Beach/McNee Ranch (South): hike in the hills for stunning views or along the beach.

Take a 40 minute drive south of the city and be rewarded with beautiful ocean views while hiking in McNee Ranch. Montara State Beach is right across the street from the McNee Ranch trailhead. It’s a great opportunity to hike followed by an afternoon beach picnic!

Visit: https://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=532 and https://bahiker.com/southbayhikes/mcneeranch.html

13. Berkeley (East): hiking in the hills above Berkeley or sea kayaking at the Berkeley Marina.

Take an easy 1.5-mile stroll around Lake Anza in Tilden Regional Park in Berkeley and smell the fragrant eucalyptus. Tucked just behind UC Berkeley’s Memorial Stadium, Strawberry Canyon is a hiking haven. A bonus is the UC Botanical Gardens, which requires an entrance fee. If you feel like paddling, head to a very safe environment at the UC Aquatic Center’s Cal Adventures and rent a kayak.

Lake Anza is a great place to relax after a hike in Tilden. The water is inviting on warm days, and sunbathers lie out on towels and bring picnics. There are also changing rooms, facilities, and a snack shack on the premises.

For Tilden and Lake Anza, visit: http://www.ebparks.org/parks/tilden

For Strawberry Canyon, visit: http://berkeleyheritage.com/berkeley_landmarks/strawbcanyon.html

San Francisco Restaurant & Activity Guide

(Prepared by the AILA Northern California Chapter)

Welcome to the San Francisco Bay Area! We hope that you enjoy your stay in California and

that you have time to visit some of the places that we enjoy the most. The AILA Northern California Chapter members have contributed information regarding their favorite restaurants and places of interest ranging from neighborhood eateries to popular tourist spots. We have included a self-guided tour of the Wine Country and for you adventurous types, and information regarding outdoor activities both in the City and for short excursions outside the City. Enjoy your visit!

Getting Around Town: San Francisco is a fairly small city with several public transportation systems servicing the area. If you plan to stay in the City, you can get by without renting a car by using our public transportation systems and/ or cabs as needed. If you choose to rent a car, beware of the parking nightmares that we live with. Always check your meters and carry lots of quarters, and definitely pay attention to the street parking signs on the block. You can also pay by phone by downloading the app on your smartphones. More information can be found on the following website https://www.sfmta.com/getting-around/drive-park/parking-meters/paybyphone. There are public lots in and around the City; in the Union Square area, where the AILA conference will be held, the cheapest parking in the area is the Ellis-O’Farrell Garage. Other garages in the area can be found at https://unionsquareshop.com/parking.html.

For those of you who are adventurous and want to try public transportation, in the City you will find: MUNI and BART. BART also services the East Bay and down the Peninsula. Specific BART trains will take you to the SFO airport and to the Oakland Coliseum station (where you can take a tram to the Oakland Airport). BART can be reached at (415) 989-2278 or via their website at http://www.bart.gov. You need to purchase tickets from a ticket machine before boarding. If you do use BART, you should keep in mind that the system shuts down at midnight.

MUNI is comprised of the Cable Cars, Buses and Light Rail. MUNI can be reached at (415) 701-2311 or at their website: http://www.sfmta.com/muni. MUNI also includes a “trip planner” on their website so that you can obtain specific details and plan your transfers. The Google maps app allows you to enter your starting and ending location to produce a variety of options. MUNI operates an “owl” service

Page 9: NORTHERN CALIFORNIA CHAPTER VISITOR GUIDES · NORTHERN CALIFORNIA CHAPTER VISITOR GUIDES. INCLUDED MATERIALS: ... San Francisco Restaurant & Activity Guide 2018 Visitor’s Guide:

between 1 AM to 5 AM. If you ride MUNI, the fare is $2.75 (exact fare for cash) for each trip (you can get a transfer) or they have special discounted ticket options for unlimited travel. Cable Car fare is $7.00 each way from 7 AM to 9 PM—but MUNI also offers special passes for Cable Cars, so visit the website for details on what your options are and how to purchase. This website also has detailed City maps that will help you get around.

Ridesharing options are extremely popular here: Uber and Lyft are affordable alternatives to catching a cab, and sometimes prove to be the quickest option, too!

We also have the Golden Gate Ferry which has bus services to ferry terminals. You can catch a Ferry to Angel Island, Tiburon, Jack London Square in Oakland and many other locales. Contact Golden Gate Ferry for more information: (415) 455-2000 or http://www.goldengateferry.org/

If you are more interested in exploring on foot, you can do that as well, but be ready for the hills. From Union Square, you can easily explore Chinatown, Downtown, the Financial District, Nob Hill, North Beach, SOMA (South of Market), the Civic Center and the Tenderloin. One tour you may want to try is walking along Grant Street to Broadway, turning right on Broadway to Columbus to walk through North Beach down towards Fisherman’s Wharf. You can catch the Hyde Street Cable car back to Union Square.

One last piece of advice, even if it’s sunny in the morning, dress in layers! The fog can roll back in the afternoon and a pleasant day can become very cold. (Remember the old Mark Twain adage that the coldest winter he ever spent was a summer in San Francisco, it’s true!). So unless you want to buy a souvenir sweatshirt at a tourist destination, be like the residents and carry a sweater, sweatshirt, and/or jacket.

San Francisco Neighborhoods/Districts (All Directions are From the Union Square Area)

San Francisco is divided up into Districts (Neighborhoods) each of which has its own character and attractions. We have listed a few of the neighborhoods for which we included suggested dining experiences. There are many travel guides about San Francisco and we just couldn’t cover the City in the same detail.

CASTRO The Castro District is a vibrant neighborhood, full of unique shops and restaurants. To get to the Castro, you can take the J Church to Duboce exit or K, L, or M underground lines to the Castro Street exit/station. You can also take the F Line on Market Street to the outbound end. The other option is BART to 16th Street and walk.

DOWNTOWN/FINANCIAL DISTRICT Known as FiDi, this part of town is home to most of the city’s corporate headquarters, law firms, banks and financial institutions, and other professional offices, and features an impressive architectural landscape. The lunch hour is a busy one in this neighborhood, with plenty of options to choose from. Try Commercial Street, between Montgomery and Sansome, and Belden Lane for a solid meal. If the weather is nice, many restaurants have outdoor seating options to take in some sun and your lunch. Note - FiDi is quiet on the weekends; not many restaurants or shops are open. To get to this area, walk East on Sutter, Post or any of the other streets that run in that direction to Montgomery.

EMBARCADERO The Embarcadero, not to be confused with the Embarcadero Center (a four-building mall), is a waterfront street featuring the best views of the Bay, the City, Treasure Island, and the Bay Bridge. In the heart of the Embarcadero area is the Ferry Building, which is buzzing with action and is a foodie’s dream: you can find great restaurants, trendy coffee shops, and delicious stalls selling pastries, empanadas, cheese, bread, etc. Catch the Farmers’ Market on the weekend at the Ferry Building for fresh produce, quick bites, and beautiful bouquets of flowers. Walk Northwest to get stunning views of Coit Tower, and into Fisherman’s Wharf, a must see for first-time visitors. Or, take a jaunt heading South, for an amazing view of the Bay Bridge; if you continue walking, you’ll reach AT&T Park, home of the SF Giants. You’ll hit Embarcadero Street by walking along Market Street, towards the Bay, or you can take BART or MUNI two stops from Powell Street Station (Union Square), getting off at Embarcadero Station.

FILLMORE/JAPANTOWN The Fillmore District is centered around Fillmore Street (mainly between Pacific and Turk Street), and is famous for its boutiques, great restaurants, and coffee shops. You can easily spend the afternoon in this neighborhood. For an iconic view of the Golden Gate Bridge and the hills of San Francisco, walk on Fillmore, northbound, to Broadway Street. If you continue, you’ll be walking on a steep downhill path, but thankfully, there are steps to make the trek easier. Heading east on Post Street will take you into the heart of Japantown. To get here, you may want to opt for a cab (or uber or lyft) or take the Geary 38 MUNI bus—you would get off on the Fillmore Street stop. The other route would be the 1 California MUNI bus, which will put you on Fillmore and California Street.

FISHERMAN’S WHARF This is probably one of the main destinations for visitors. Many of the tour boats leave from here. You can do a bit of a walk along Aquatic Park and end up in Fort Mason. The National Maritime Museum, Ghirardelli Square and great views of the Bay are all here. You may want to take the Cable Car from Union Square to Fisherman’s Wharf, but be prepared for long lines at each end.

MARINA The Marina is at the north end of the City, and has beautiful green spaces right on the water: Crissy Field, Fort Mason, and Marina Green. Chestnut and Union Streets have many food and shopping

Page 11: NORTHERN CALIFORNIA CHAPTER VISITOR GUIDES · NORTHERN CALIFORNIA CHAPTER VISITOR GUIDES. INCLUDED MATERIALS: ... San Francisco Restaurant & Activity Guide 2018 Visitor’s Guide:

options. You can get here by continuing to walk from Fisherman’s Wharf or by bus or by car. If you continue walking through, you will find yourself in a place with good views of the Golden Gate Bridge. In between the Marina and Fisherman’s Wharf is Fort Mason.

MISSION The Mission district has the best dining in the city, from the lowest to highest price point and everything in between. You will find countless taquerias, stellar restaurants (some with Michelin stars), bars, coffee shops, and bakeries. In the Mission, you can shop in boutiques, browse novelty shops, take in the murals in Clarion Alley, or go on a food tour, sampling anything from Burmese food to tacos. The top of Dolores Park has lovely views of the city, and a walk on Valencia Street between 14th and Cesar Chavez would be an afternoon well-spent. The Mission District can be reached by BART (exit the 16th or 24th Street stop).

NOE VALLEY/GLEN PARK Noe Valley and the lesser known Glen Park are further west and south, respectively of the Mission. You can access Noe Valley by also getting off BART at 24th Street and walking West. Stay on 24th and you will find yourself in the middle of a small area with boutiques, and restaurants. To access Glen Park, you take BART to the Glen Park Station and walk up Diamond (cross Bosworth) to access the small village. There is a taqueria here, Coronet and there is a good restaurant, Chenery Park. Also in Glen Park is Glen Park Canyon which offers the only above ground stream in San Francisco that runs through the heart of the park. There are trails and paths to walk and the park offers a nice break from the City.

NOPA (NORTH OF THE PANHANDLE)/WESTERN ADDITION This neighborhood, like the Mission, has a vibrant food, bar, and coffee shop scene, mainly centered along Divisadero Street, between Golden Gate and Haight Street. The Panhandle is a small park strip on Oak (and Fell) Street, between Baker and Stanyan Streets, and leads to Golden Gate Park (SF’s version of Central Park). Walk to Alamo Square Park for classic SF city views, and the famous “Full House” shot. Take the 5 Fulton or 21 Hayes bus line to get to this area of town.

NORTH BEACH/CHINATOWN This is one of the happening places in the City. You can find good Italian food in North Beach with a strong nightlife and lots of people watching. Chinatown, which is just South of North Beach is a bustling area with lots of shops carrying just about anything you could want. This is an easy and fun walk from Union Square. Walk to Grant Avenue and head North through Chinatown. This will take you to Broadway, do a quick jog to the right to get to Columbus and walk up Columbus Avenue. Check out Molinari’s Italian Deli which is on Columbus (good sandwiches, salads, and selections of balsamic vinegar).

UNION SQUARE Shopping! Hotels! Need we say more? This is the area where AILA is holding the conference. It is crowded and parking is hard to come by. If you do drive in, try to park in the Stockton/Sutter Garage as it is usually cheaper. There is also parking under Union Square and there are other lots in the area. You may want to consider parking South of Market and walking to Union Square. We have tried to list a number of restaurants in this area in particular, but also check with the Concierge. We have several restaurants described below for this area that are worth checking out. It’s also a pleasant place to walk but can be crowded on the weekends.

PACIFIC HEIGHTS Pacific Heights offers some of the most dramatic views of the Bay. Pacific Heights is North of the Fillmore District. You will find some of the old San Francisco Mansions (Mrs. Doubtfire was filmed here!). There are not many restaurants in this area, but you are only several blocks from the Fillmore area or you can walk down some pretty steep streets to find yourself on Union Street. You may

Page 12: NORTHERN CALIFORNIA CHAPTER VISITOR GUIDES · NORTHERN CALIFORNIA CHAPTER VISITOR GUIDES. INCLUDED MATERIALS: ... San Francisco Restaurant & Activity Guide 2018 Visitor’s Guide:

want to skip the walk back up the hills.

PRESIDIO The Presidio, formerly an Army base, became part of the National Park System several years ago. This is a gem of a park and is actually larger than Golden Gate Park. There are areas of dense woods, Crissy Field (beach front), old houses and buildings and wonderful trails that wind through the entire area. This is a great place to go. If you want to walk along the beach, then head to Crissy Field, which has recently been redone. It’s a nice walk along Crissy Field to Fort Point, which is at the base of the Golden Gate Bridge. There are several buses that will take you to the Presidio, and the best thing is to check the MUNI website. The other options are to take a cab or to drive. You can also do a long walk from Fisherman’s Wharf or along Union Street to reach the Presidio.

SOMA—SOUTH OF MARKET SOMA has become one of the major areas for trendy new restaurants and places to go. Check out the Metreon, 101 Fourth Street, www.metreon. com which offers 16 theaters, shops and restaurants. There are also quite a few other happening restaurants in this area, which are listed in this guide. You can access this area by crossing Market—hence the name South of Market. Yerba Buena Center for the Arts is located on Mission Street between 3rd and 4th Streets. There is a Merry-Go-Round here and other items of interest including a dedication to Martin Luther King Junior. If it’s a hot day in the City (i.e., no fog), then the MLK area offers a cool respite. Note that this area can be very quiet on the weekend, and neighborhoods such as the Mission, NOPA/Western Addition, and North Beach may be more lively for a restaurant and nightlife scene.

SUNSET/RICHMOND The Sunset and Richmond Districts are on the South side and North side, respectively of Golden Gate Park. Both offer various restaurants and shops. To access the Sunset area, you can take the N Judah light rail (access MUNI underground). For the Richmond District, take the 38 Geary. Parking can be difficult in these neighborhoods especially in the Inner Sunset and the Inner Richmond (inner means closer to Downtown). But beware, while it may be warm in Union Square, it is usually cooler and foggier in these areas, especially in June.

WINE COUNTRY TIPS:

• TIP: Have a designated driver, sign up for a tour, rent a car or van with a driver, or use ride-sharing apps (Lyft/Uber) within the area. There are many ways to get to Wine Country without driving yourself. • TIP: Drink plenty of water. Each of the wineries offers water along with the samples, and you should bring a bottle of water for the car. • TIP: Make sure to eat before the tastings. Take a lunch break at one of wonderful restaurants, delis, or bakeries in the area. • TIP: Don’t try to drink every sample you’re offered, even though you’ve paid for them. Even a professional palate gets worn out after a certain number of wines. Share a tasting if you are with a significant other or someone else with whom you don’t mind sharing a glass. You can try more that way! • TIP: Pour out glasses that you don’t like after one taste. Save your palate for wines you like. Don’t be afraid to ask them to customize a tasting—if you only like reds, they can skip the whites and add a few reds—there are always wines that aren’t on the official list.

• TIP: Eat a piece of bread or cracker between tasting different wines—it helps to clear your palate and the wineries will offer these as parts of the tasting. The winery staff will also suggest that you start with a certain order in the tasting—don’t jump ahead unless you know that you don’t like a certain type of wine.

• TIP: Don’t feel obligated to buy a bottle from the tasting room. Also, you will find many of the wines

Page 31: NORTHERN CALIFORNIA CHAPTER VISITOR GUIDES · NORTHERN CALIFORNIA CHAPTER VISITOR GUIDES. INCLUDED MATERIALS: ... San Francisco Restaurant & Activity Guide 2018 Visitor’s Guide:

for the same price or even less at the local grocery store. However, if the wine is only available at the winery and you really like it, then buy it!

• TIP: Have your wines shipped to your state, if shipping is allowed. The additional postage may be worth the alternative: lugging the case around the airport. Or, if you flew Southwest or any other airline that doesn’t charge for baggage, or if you don’t mind paying for an extra bag, pick up a box with Styrofoam inserts, either 6 or a dozen, and pack a box to take on the plane with you. Many wineries sell these.

• TIP: Take a notebook and take notes, even if it’s as simple as “Quail Ridge 1997 Cabernet - good!” It’s hard to remember what you liked and didn’t like at the end of a day of tasting. Or just snap a photo with your smartphone..

• TIP: Take the opportunity to try varietals you don’t normally drink. If you’re a Chardonnay fan, you might find you like Sauvignon Blanc or reds like Syrah. One trip to Napa could change your life for the better.

• TIP: If you like it, it’s good! There are no rules to wine tasting and every person’s palate is different.

• TIP: Have a designated driver or consider getting a group together to rent a limo/van with driver. The hotels should be able to assist you with this. If you rent a limo, check their safety record with the Better Business Bureau and make sure they have a fire extinguisher and show you where it is.

In addition to visiting, you may make a donation to fire recovery efforts in Napa, Sonoma and Mendocino counties through any of the following links:
