Dear Readers:This week, the Centre View turns over its

pages to the youth and students. We asked principals and teachers from

area schools to encourage students to con-tribute their words, pictures and photos forour annual Children’s Issue.

The response as always was enormous. While we were unable to publish every piecewe received, we did our best to put togethera paper with a fair sampling of the submit-ted stories, poems, drawings, paintings, photographs and other works of art.

We appreciate the extra effort made byschool staff to gather the materials duringtheir busy time leading up to the holidays. We’d also like to encourage both schools andparents to mark their 2010 calendars forearly December, the deadline for submis-sions for next year’s Children’s Centre View. Please keep us in mind as your childrencontinue to create spectacular works of artand inspiring pieces of writing in the com-ing year.

The children’s issue is only a part of ouryear-round commitment to cover educationand our local schools. As always, the Cen-tre View welcomes letters to the editor, storyideas, calendar listings and notices of localevents from our readers. Photos and othersubmissions about special events at schoolsare especially welcome for our weeklyschools pages.

Our preferred method for material is e-mail, which should be sent [email protected],but you can reach us by mail at 1606 KingStreet, Alexandria, VA 22314 or call 703-778-9415 with any questions.

If you could give someone a gift thatdidn’t cost money, what would it be? If Icould give someone a gift that did not costmoney, it would be hope and love. Manypeople do not have someone who lovesthem and hope that they might have abrighter future. How I might give love ismaybe I can make them feel better if theyare down, care for them, and be nice tothem. How I might give hope is maybe bycheering them on if they are having trouble, give them confidence, and help themachieve their goals. That would be my giftthat does not cost money.

—Adam lekang,

Grade 5,

Greenbriar West Elementary School

If you could give someone a gift thatdidn’t cost money, what would it be? Iwould give someone a gift of friendship andtime. I would spend the day with my friendsor family, even if I wouldn’t want to. I wouldbe with them if they asked. I would dothings they liked, even if I didn’t like to dothose things. If I was doing something likereading, doing the computer, or playing agame, and they came over and wanted tobe with me, I would stop what I was doingand do what they wanted. If they felt lonelyor left out, I would be there for them.

If I gave a gift it would be friendship andtime.

— Katie Boller,

Greenbriar West Elementary School

If you could give someone a gift thatdidn’t cost money it would be? If I couldgive someone a gift that did not cost money, what would it be? I am going to write aboutgiving time. Time is very valuable if youthink of it in a certain way.

I would give some of my time to visit aretirement home and people with out fam-ily. I would also help out at a soup kitchen.I really do help out at a soup kitchen, withmy grandma whenever I go to her house. Ithink it is a great way to give someonesomething that does not cost money.

— Beth Dickman,

Greenbriar West Elementary School

If I could give someone a gift that didn’tcost money I would give the gift of friend-ship to my friend Dennis. He is autistic. Itwould give him hope and happiness. Itwould also show him compassion. Hedoesn’t have many friends so I think I shouldplay with him more often. I would be will-ing to do stuff that I don’t want to do buthe does.

I think I could teach him stuff, like howto get along with others. I usually invitehim to my birthday parties. At first he seemslike a person you wouldn’t want to befriends with, but once you warm up to himhe is pretty fun to play with. That is what Iwould give to someone that didn’t costmoney.

If you could give someone a giftthat didn’t cost money, whatwould it be? I would give friend-ship. I think Allie would like re-ceiving friendship because shewould have someone to talk to andhang out with. For instance, if shehas trouble in school or anythingelse she can talk to me about it.

Another reason I would giveAllie friendship is a friend is al-ways there for you. Also if you aresad or anything, they can comfortyou and try to make you feel bet-ter. That is why I would givefriendship if I could give friend-ship — if I could give some one agift that didn’t cost any money.

— Katie Wu,

Greenbriar West Elementary

School

If you could give someone a giftthat didn’t cost money, whatwould it be? If I could give some-one a gift that didn’t cost money, Iwould give the gift of joy and hap-piness. For example if it was formy mother, I would do choresaround the house, and help her. Iprobably wouldn’t like doing thosethings, but it would make mymother happy. If it is for someonein need, I would go and spend timewith them, which would makepeople very happy. If I could givejoy I would do something for someI don’t feel like doing. If it was formy sister I would play with her togive her joy. Happiness and joydon’t cost money, and it can comeonly from your heart. That is thegift that I would give.

— Sneha Suresh,

Greenbriar West Elementary

School

If I could give someone a giftthat didn’t cost money, I wouldgive my brother happiness. Iwould do that because most of thetime, he’s happy, but sometimes heisn’t, and I don’t like it when he’snot happy. Sometimes I tackle himwhen he’s coming up the stairs, and he yells at me saying”, Aarrgh! Why do you always do that!?” Icould make him happy by not tack-ling him. Also, he likes to ambushmy dad with Nerf guns, but I don’t,so I could help him ambush mydad. Sometimes, he wants to playfootball outside, but I don’t so nexttime he wants to play football, I’llsay yes. Those are some ways Icould give my brother the gift ofhappiness.

What do I wantto be whenI grow up?

When I grow up I want to be inthe Air Force because you get tofly a plane, which is specially madeto go into war and fight! It’s reallycool to fly something that impor-tant. It would be really fun to gointo the air and watch land froman elevated place.

Another reason why I want tobe in the Air Force is because youget to have a thrill in life. There’sso much action when you’re fly-ing a warplane because of the su-per-high speeds. You also get tovisit really cool places around theworld, which not many people cando in their life. This is why I wantto be in the Air Force.

The Best GiftI Received

The best gift I’ve ever receivedwould be my laptop. The reasonit is my favorite is because it gaveme something to do in my sparetime. It also is for educational pur-poses.

The reason it gave me some-thing to do is because I could al-ways do educational stuff like Na-tional Geographic. My parents letme play on my computer once ina while so that’s another thingthat’s good. Also I can play CDson my computer. My computer hasa Centrino processor and is madeby IBM. That is why my computeris the best gift I received.

The Best ThingThat HasHappened to Me

The best thing that has everhappened to me is that I got twoTonkanese cats named Lily andEdmund. The breed Tonkaneseis a mix of the breeds Burmeseand Siamese. My mom drove 13hours to West Virginia, where thebreeder was, to get the cats. Theywere kittens when we first gotthem and Edmund was veryscared but both of them eased upquickly.

Now my cats are very sweet. They are about 2 years old andtheir birthday is Sept. 4th. I amtheir favorite in the family and Ilove them very much. Lily andEdmund are very active and loveto play! My parents say I don’ttake responsibility like feedingthem but that doesn’t mean I don’tlike them. This is why getting catsis the best thing that has happenedto me.

A Great GiftIf I gave someone a gift that

didn’t cost money, I would givethem the feeling that they coulddepend on me. This is a great giftbecause I have it and I can’t imag-ine what life would be like with-out it. It is really helpful.

I would give this gift becausesometimes, when I look into one’seyes, I can see worry. This giftwould help fix that. We all haveforgotten something before, and ifsomeone was there to remind you, then it wouldn’t have happened.Lastly, I would give this gift be-cause it just feels good to knowthat you have somebody to rely on.That is the gift that I would give.

— Ava Sharifi,

My FavoriteAnimal

My favorite animals are ants. They are often overlooked orthought of as pests, but I thinktheir hardworking and team-likenature is something to be admired. They seem strong and selfless, even carrying two stomachs: onefor themselves and one for the

colony. Their nature is admirable, but even so, people still overlookthem. If we, as mankind, chooseto follow their lead, the worldcould be a better place.

Imagine the world all as one, like ants, working together andaccepting each other, a person spe-cializing in their job, not perform-ing it well for himself, but for thewelfare of the world. Imagine: nopoverty, like ants. My favoriteanimals are ants because they areshowing a great model for theworld.

Though they are small, they con-vey a great message!

— Daniel S. Mitchell,

Fifth Grade, Greenbriar West

A PresentIf I could give a gift that doesn’t

cost money, it would be either acard or a flower crown. I woulddo a card because they are reallythoughtful, and my whole entirefamily likes hand-made cardsmore than presents. Also, I already

have blank cards at home, so, itwould be free. That is why I wouldgive someone a card.

The other thing is a flowercrown because they are verypretty. They are easy, so, if theybecome brown, you can make an-other one. It takes a bit of time, soyou spend a lot of thought into it.They also smell really good. Thatis what I would give as a presentwith no price.

What I Want to beWhen I Grow up

What I want to be when I grow up is an engineerwho doubles as a doctor in medicine. In other wordsI want go to MIT and take classes in medicine andengineering. Also, I would like to get a Ph.D. like mydad and become a doctor of philosophy. I would thenbe addressed as Dr. Kulkarni whether I am a doctorof medicine or not. And then with that kind of back-ground I would like to work in companies like Boeing,Sikorsky, Pratt and Whitney and other building com-panies.

— Adarsh Kulkarni,

Fifth Grade, Greenbriar West Elementary

The Best Gift I Could GiveIf I could give someone a gift that did not cost

money, it would be friendship. To me friendship islike a hug from a friend. For it possibly could be. IfI could give friendship to every heart in the universethat would be the greatest thing that ever happenedto me. If I could give friendship to the world wewould have peace instead of wars. We would nothave fights or bullies or crimes anymore. It wouldbe a world of joy without any worries. Friendship isa wonderful thing, and if I were you, I would not letgo of it. For if you do, it is not a pretty sight.

— Alexa Conti,

Fifth Grade, Greenbriar West Elementary

What Makes aGood Friend

A good friend to me is somebody you can trustwith your life. Somebody who isn’t two-faced (be-ing nice to you when it’s just you and them and thentalk meanly about you to other people). Somebodywho won’t turn their back on you because you’resuddenly not “important enough.”

A good friend won’t make lies about you and isthere for you through thick and thin (good and bad.)A good friend makes you laugh when you want tocry, and always has your back. Somebody who doesn’tlie to you, but tells you the truth.

A good friend will like you for who you are andwill always stay your friend, no matter what otherpeople say.

That’s what makes a good friend to me.— Allison Hogarth,

Fifth Grade, Greenbriar West Elementary

Everything that Makes aGood Friend

A good friend always sticks by your side if you’rebeing picked on. When you’re feeling down, they tryto help you feel good and be happy. They like youfor who you are, not for what you have. A goodfriend plays with you and makes you laugh even ifyou think that everything is not that great. Lastly, agood friend never betrays you or tells your secrets.

— Andrew Guthrie,

Fifth Grade, Greenbriar West Elementary

The CorgiComing down the woodland trail is a short and

happy dog. He dresses in a coat of black, tan, andwhite. His egg-shaped body rocks charmingly whenhe trots. This is a corgi, a dog that captured the heartof the queen. Though his tail was cut off as a pup, heholds no grudge. Instead he smiles; he’s happier thana boy on his birthday. This dog is more active than a

sprinting gazelle! He has a mischief bone though. That is his only

flaw. Socks and shoes he’s happy to chew, and yardshe’ll be glad to dig in! His eyes have a devious glint, but you can’t reprimand a face like that! That look istoo adorable to ever be mad at. A corgi’s affection isas big as his ears. He announces to the world, “I amhere to entertain and love!”

— Caitlyn Ling,

Fifth Grade, Greenbriar West Elementary

My Favorite AnimalMy favorite animal is a dolphin. I like dolphins

because they make good companions, they’ve alwaysgot a happy face, and they cheer me up. First of all,I like dolphins because they make good friends. Theymake good friends because they always look like theylove to play. Second of all, they’ve always got a cheer-ful look on their face. I like that because it alwaysseems like they are always happy and want to play.Lastly, I like them because they always cheer me up.They cheer me up with their comforting look. Myfavorite animal is the dolphin.

— Christine Li,

Fifth Grade, Greenbriar West Elementary

A Gift ThatDidn’t Cost Money

If I could give a gift that didn’t cost money it wouldbe friendship. I would choose that because it wouldbe something you could possess all the time. Theywould feel protected and happy. What if they neverhad a friend and were, bullied or left out? If yougive them your friendship and care, everything willchange. I want to help people and change their lives. That’s what I want everyone else to do, too.

— Eileen Li,

Fifth Grade, Greenbriar West Elementary

WinterWinter! Winter! Winter is here! But there ain’t a single dancing deer. The pretty flowers are dead, and I’m sick in bedThe spring animals are hibernating, for I am also sleeping.Outside you can hear echoes of people yell and

cry “winter is finally here!”But, I can’t hear because I’m inside having D.E.A.R.Then I go out and feel the cold breeze blow my

hair as if the wind was dancing. Then I see cookies being sold covered in icing. Now that I am done with sharing my winter day,I will share some more on another winter Wednes-

day.— Hannah Bae,

Fifth Grade, Greenbriar West Elementary

A True FriendWhat makes a good friend? A good friend poses

many good qualities. A good friend is kind, trust-worthy, and many other things. One of your goodfriends will stick up for you. You should be a goodfriend to your friends. A good friend will help youwith anything. Someone who is not a good friend isalways trying to be better than you.

A good friend or person will always keep thosegood qualities throughout their lives. That’s whatmakes a good friend

In the pantheon of things (subjects) withwhich I have absolutely no knowledge (andeven less interest) are cars and more specifi-cally – and especially, their repairs. Thehead of a pin would likely provide sufficientspace for that knowledge. So when some-thing as routinely simple as an “Oil” lightilluminates on my car’s dashboard, myimmediate reaction/assessment is “Oh…!Now what do I do?” What little I do knowto do, reactive though it may be (asopposed to proactive as it should be), is toconsult the owner’s manual provided by thedealer/manufacturer. However, since thereare 352 pages in that manual, I’m notinstinctively able (even though oil beginswith the letter “o”) to seek and find theanswer to my question. That questionbeing, as simply as my limited knowledgecan determine is, “What kind of oil do I putin my car’s engine?”

Knowing what information I wantedthough, did not assist me in finding it as Iflipped through the hundreds of color-coded and headline/categorized pages/sections, so I went to the back of the man-ual, the glossary of terms if you will, to see ifthe very specification information for whichI was looking was somehow identified. Sureenough, it was. Oh boy, was it!

The terms are listed alphabetically so Iscanned/flipped the pages until I found thegrouping for the letter “O.” And there, tomy nearly uncontrollable joy, I found theexact answer I was looking for. And found itin such Kenny-level English that I thought itworth mentioning and focusing on as fodderfor this week’s column. Reading the listingsunder “Oil,” from top to bottom I read, “OilChanging;” “Identification Symbol;” andthen the pièce de résistance and the choiceI could not actually resist – or believe myeyes – which enabled me to find the answerto my oil question, was printed the follow-ing: “What kind of oil do I put in myengine?” Can you believe that? A manualwritten just for me, and a category/answerto my question that was so perfectly suitedto its owner’s minuscule level – and totallack – of knowledge, that it prevented evena “Bozo” like me from clowning-up thismuch-needed repair/replenishment. Youcan’t imagine (although maybe you can) thesheer joy and relief I experienced, whenafter stressing-up the usual anxiety broughton by these kinds of car-related conun-drums (the appearance of an “idiot” light;aptly named), and then holding this volumi-nous owner’s manual in my hands as wellwith a simple answer apparently not in theoffing, that I was able to, in relatively shortorder, find the answer and find it so obvi-ously stated that, my usual mental anguishconcerning this mechanical mishmash wascompletely eliminated.

When I saw in the owner’s manual thatthe section/page that I needed to get to wasin fact the exact question to which I wasdesperately seeking a simple – and quick –answer, I busted out laughing and said,“Finally, a manual that I can understand.”

Simple pleasures for a simple person. Now that’s what I’m talking about!
