Wildlife officials from N.H. Fish and Game Department remindmotorists to take extra care while traveling Granite State road-ways at this time of year, because moose are on the move lookingfor mates. Kristine Rines, Fish and Games longtime MooseProject Leader, says that drivers should be prepared to see andreact quickly to moose on or near the road. While moose vehiclecollisions happen at all times of the year, fall is a time ofincreased activity and accidents. In 2014, over 130 moose werekilled by vehicles in New Hampshire.

Rines urges drivers to slow down and stay alert -- and not just at"moose crossing" signs!

    To avoid a moose collision:

Drive no faster than 55 miles per hour -- especially at dusk anddawn.

    Use high beams when possible;

    Be able to stop within the zone of your headlights;

Scan the sides of the roads as you drive.

For more information on avoiding moose collisions, visitwww.wildnh.com/wildlife/brake-for-moose.html.

    Time flies when youre having

fun! I am coming up on the oneyear anniversary since I did mylast bail. Looking over my five-year run, 85 percent of myclients actually paid the fee Iwas due. Not too shabby. I dohave to admit I do miss the2:30AM calls... especially inthe winter... NOT!

Boy, am I proud of myself(beaming)! On Tripadvisor, Ihave achieved the rank ofSenior Reviewer! And thatsafter only five reviews (wedont really go anywhere)! I canonly imagine what my latertitles will be after, say, tenreviews Grand ExaltedGlorious Supreme ReviewerExtraordinaire....

Trouble with getting older is Idont remember what I wrotehere before. That said, I do

believe the US has lost its

national identity when every-thing is now okay for everyone

you know, Come on in; dontadapt to us. Let us adapt toyou! This thought was spurred

by a recent meme about peoplewho leave to escape their

messed-up countries andcome here and want to bringtheir way of doing things theyleft behind. No.

I think often about so-calledPolitical Correctness (I hate it)versus just being well-man-nered and polite (I usually am). There is a big difference there, you know. (Just between us, Ican probably out-swear most

people I know, but I dont!)

The TV ad says Chris Christiecut some 800 state programs thats impressive, but I canthelp but wonder what those

programs were, what was cutand who was impacted....

More on the ravages of old age:If you want to friend me onFacebook and I dont rememberyou or recognize your name, Iwill send a message asking how

I know you. Please dont beoffended. Also, feel free tointroduce (or reintroduce) your-self if you see me out and about.I wont always remember whoyou are. The other afternoonwhile shopping, I saw an attrac-tive young woman I had inschool. We chatted for a bit andsaid our goodbyes. When I wentto look for her profile onFacebook, I couldnt rememberher name. Ouch!

For the first time in a long time,I got asked for an ID (my

license) when I went to deposita couple of checks at my bank.I think it might have had to dowith the fact I had a jacket on a black leather jacket with lotsof zippers and a helmet in myhand. I was out on my bike. Alittle bit of profiling, maybe?

I am a realist. I see myself at theage where women dont look atme twice (and I will probablynever again be carded [except atmy bank]), but my hopes wererevived when I got the follow-ing email: How have you

been? What is your name?Where are you from? I am

Nara. I live in Seoul. When thelast time you were on the site? Iwant to write you today in chat,

but you have already left it. Ireally like your profile. I thinkthat we have many commoninterests. I am good at Ping-

    pong)....

OMG! I should have trustedmy gut! This wonderful self-

proclaimed Christian man inCampton did some body workon my truck. When I got it

    back, it looked beautiful... for

two days - just enough time forme to gladly give and for him togladly take my money. As ofthis writing, I made him a set-

Editors Note: An oldie butgoodie! As Tom takes a break, well run one from last year atthis time.

Lately I've been keeping com-pany during the late hours ofeach night with May Sarton's

"Journal of a Solitude." I'veencountered her poetry foryears and whenever I do Iappreciate her gift, but her jour-nal is something deeper, morehonest and genuine. The lateNew Hampshire poet liveddown in the Monadnock areaand well understood the smalltowns that dot our state and theland and weather we all knowintimately.

Each night, I read an entry. Iportion it out so that I will notfinish the book too quickly. Each morning, as Atticus and Iwalk or hike, her words returnto me while we pass through thecolorful foliage, along earthenpaths, by rivers and ponds, to

ledges with views more breath-taking than I've ever noticed. For this certainly has been the

best fall foliage I've seen inyears. And just as the colorsand the light have been lumi-

nous, so are her words. Howfortunate we are to live here, and how fortunate to have poetsand writers who understand

New Hampshire. As theyreflect this great area and thenatural world that surrounds us,

Nature reflects who we are aswe surrender to her charms.

There is something in Sarton'sjournal entries that pierce me.A stark reality made beautiful. It's exhibited in the way shesees the trees and her wordsoffer lessons to each of us.Perhaps lessons we alreadyknow, but need a gentlereminder to see clearly onceagain. How appropriate she

starts off in the fall and notesthe changing of the landscape.Just as we are currently wit-nessing as we look out thekitchen window, walk the dog,or drive to work.

As Atticus continues to age Iam faced with a new reality. He's twelve now; in the autumnyears of his life. He's not asquick or strong as he once was.His hearing is failing - a bit.His eyes don't see as clearly asnight, nor do they judge depthas accurately either. But he'sstill well, still enjoys getting outand about. If we are not outthree times a day he stares at meas I write to remind me we needto be outside. "Get a move on,"

his stern look says to me."Daylight is burning."

As Atticus ages, I find myselfgrowing up a bit. For whendogs are young or in the prime

of their lives, we are all chil-dren in their company. But I amlearning to accept things thatthe young may not quite com-

prehend. One of them is know-ing we won't be returning tonearly any of the highest peakswe've done together. Not at hisage. And the next time I returnto Franconia Ridge or theBonds or the Presidentials, itwill be without him. Hopefullyit will be years down the road. But still I have been forced toaccept the change we all mustdeal with when those we loveturn elderly and cannot getaround quite as easily as theyonce did.

But amidst the loss, there is agrace to be found. Look no fur-ther than the trees that blaze

bright red, orange, and yelloweverywhere we look. MaySarton wrote: "I think of thetrees and how simply they letgo, let fall the riches of a sea-son, how without grief (itseems) they can let go and godeep into their roots for renewaland sleep." Then she added: "Isthis a key? Keep busy with sur-vival. Imitate the trees. Learn tolose in order to recover, andremember that nothing stays thesame for long, not even pain,

psychic pain. Sit it out. Let it allpass. Let it go."

It seems that is the lesson we

are learning in Atticus's old age.To let go of the past. Pastexpectations. Past performanc-es on the trails. We both areolder than we were when westarted hiking ten years ago, but

while I'm middle aged, myfour-legged friend is nowbecoming elderly.

Acceptance has come in theform of appreciating naturewhenever we experience it andwherever we can. So what ifwe don't go as high as we usedto or traverse for as manymiles? In the White Mountainswe are blessed with waterfallsand valleys, ponds that aresecreted away where the moosego to play and eat, and rivers

both strong and gentle. The airis clean, the wildlife abounds, and we are still free as we wishto be as we make our way intothe forest each time we enter

one, leaving the car and the restof the busy world behind.

Nature calls to us and we stillrespond. Our age doesn't mat-ter. As we grow older we tem-

per our desires and find newplaces to embrace and differentways of getting lost in nature inorder to get lost in ourselves.

Nature teaches us what we needto learn. We merely have totake the time to pause and payattention. Right now the treesare reminding me that in theautumn they are at their most

beautiful. Looking to Atticusnow as I write this, his eyes area tad bit cloudier, his muzzlehas a touch of gray in it.

Beyond that though, he sas he always has. Onlymorning, in mountain air and cool, he bounced altrail that traces the Saco like he was a pup again. Y

    and free and happy.

The passage of the seasomuch like the passage oThere are lessons to be leand gifts to received, no mthe time of year. No matttime of life.

An Emerging Concern For Garlic Growers______________________________________________________By Heather Bryant, RegionalField Specialist, Food andAgriculture

October is the best time to plantgarlic here in northern NewHampshire. Its a satisfyinglyeasy crop to grow, and as a

bonus, unlike many other crops, deer dont bother it. Most gar-deners either buy their seed gar-lic from other growers or savetheir own from this seasons

crop. However, before youplant there is an emerging con-cern you should be aware of.

Recently our plant diagnosticlab diagnosed a case of whiterot in garlic grown in NewHampshire. White rot is a fun-gal disease on allium species,

primarily garlic and onions. Ingarlic, it causes white fungalgrowth on the cloves whicheventually causes them to rot.The disease generally starts inthe spring, but symptoms maynot be noticeable until June orJuly when harvest begins.

The ideal soil temperature forthe development of the diseaseis 60-65F, but it can develop at

soil temperatures as low as50F and as high as 75F,meaning unfortunately, that ourgrowing conditions are wellsuited for the disease.

While this summer was the firsttime this disease was diagnosedin New Hampshire, it was diag-nosed in Maine in 2008. Inaddition to ruining this yearscrop, white rot produces repro-ductive structures called sclero-

tia which can remain viable inthe soil for up to 40 years. These sclerotia can also betransported from one field orgarden to another on the garlic

itself or tools or other equip-ment that has soil on it. Thereare no fungicides that areknown to be effective on thisdisease so rotation is the onlyviable alternative once it showsup in a field.

Preventing white rot, then isyour best option. Examine thegarlic very carefully, and do not

plant anything that has any vis-ible symptoms such as white

fluffy mold or signs of decay. In the early days of the diseaseyou might only have it in onesmall area, but the disease can

spread from plant to playou replant even one cloves with symptomtime the affected arexpand. If you susphave the disease, cleatools and equipment cafter use and purchasseed stock.

One challenge with idewhite rot is that the sycan easily look like othe

diseases such as basaleven go unnoticed at fonly affects a couple pla

Known far and wide as afavorite Christmas tree farm, the historic Rocks Estate is alsohome to nearly 200 apple trees, including several old-fashionedheirloom varieties. In honor ofapples and autumn, The Rockswill host an Apple CiderCelebration Oct. 10-12 at thefarm.

While our main focus isChristmas trees, we also spendlots of time caring for the apple

trees growing around the farm, said Rocks Estate director NigelManley. Many types of Appletrees are not native to NewEngland, but theyve been apart of the landscape and theculture here for generations, and were looking forward tolots of fun during our firstApple Cider Celebration.

The Celebration will runSaturday, Sunday, and Mondayof Columbus Day Weekend, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Visitorswill be invited to make theirown cider, and small ciderpresses will be available forpurchase. Manley will presentan apple tree pruning programSaturday at 11 a.m. Horse-drawn wagon rides will beoffered Sunday and Monday.

    Both the Rocks Marketplace

and the Gift Shop will be openduring the Apple CiderCelebration. Chockfull of local-ly-crafted and U.S.A.-madeitems, from jewelry and soapsto pottery and candy, along withholiday decorations and The

    Just Work

When Ryan and I consider ourroot cellar project (which isnearing completion! soon!),there are three distinct phasesthat we think of. First, the cin-der block masonry. This was a

new skill to learn, and one thatdemanded huge efforts to pre-pare for: carrying the cinderblocks into the property, andhauling bags of concrete andmortar mix. These extra chal-lenges made for some good sto-ries, though, and once we gotthe hang of slingin mud, enjoyed the rhythm of erectingwalls.

Second is the carpentryrequired to frame and cap thecellar, construct the trap door, and build the temporary roof toallow for winter access (until amore permanent shed is builtover the cellar). Though carry-

ing dimensional lumberthrough the woods to our clear-ing is - compared to luggingcinder blocks - a relativelycomfortable stroll, the workitself requires a precision andan exactitude that is difficult toachieve with hand tools.

Cutting a board to a certainlength that, for example, includes 7/16 is onerous to

perfectly achieve without favor-ing a minor tilt to the saw, orone side of the cut line versusthe other...not to mention theweariness that can creep in afterhours of cutting with one handwhile holding a given boardsteady with the other. Qualitycarpentry is greatly assisted bymeticulous tools and a suitableworkplace. Whether for ourlack of these prerequisites, orsimply a predisposition againstsuch fine detail, this work wefind more trying than any otheraspect of the cellar project.

The third aspect of our projectis equally demanding, and alsoour favorite: shoveling to back-fill the cellar. This requiredmultiple days of moving andterracing rocks, and shovelingtil our backs needed a rest.Changing the landscape, manu-ally, one shovelful of dirt at atime, with the sun wringingsweat out of us and the heattesting our endurance; it is bothdaunting and elating to do whatis nowadays commonly relegat-ed to a tractor or backhoe. This

is the work we relish, have con-fidence in, and find most satis-fying. We may have learned the

basics of masonry, we mayunderstand the tenants of sim-

ple carpentry...but moving dirtand rocks is something weinnately know. The smell ofdirt, the weight of its matter, theabrasive roughness of granitewith veins of feldspar, micaschist, or quartz, the simplerepetitiveness of hard, physicallabor.

Its tiring, it can be uncomfort-able, and we love the fact thatwe just up and do it because itneeds to be done. In Ryanswords, such physical labor isjust work - and therefore easyfor us to accept and understand.Empowering the full range ofour physical abilities andstrengths, such work forces themind to succumb to the body, and in the process lets the spiritsing with the exhilaration of

    Inspiring Words for You!

Dear Friends, Philippians 1:910 says,And this is my prayer: that your love

may abound more and more in knowledgeand depth of insight, so that you may be able

to discern what is best and may be pure andblameless for the day of Christ... The Word ofGod is TRUTH! We are to renew our mindsdaily with the Word of God. 2 Timothy 3:1617 tells us,All Scripture is given by inspirationof God, and is profitable for doctrine, forreproof, for correction, for instruction inrighteousness, that the man of God may becomplete, thoroughly equipped for everygood work. Read Gods Word! God Bless youall.

    Black Swallowtails HaveMany Disguises

It was the dotted, orangey-yel-low and black stripes that stoodout, drawing my sons gaze tothe edge of the sandbox. A smallcaterpillar clung to thegoutweed, munching away onthe green leaves. At first wethought it was a monarch cater-

pillar, but the stripes werentquite right. Out came the fieldguide, where we discovered our

caterpillar to be a future blackswallowtail butterfly. After thatfirst discovery, we suddenlynoticed more caterpillars, bothin that patch of goutweed and onthe greens of the carrots in ourlate-summer garden.

The black swallowtail (Papiliopolyxenes) is one of six swal-lowtail species found in northern

New England and one of morethan 500 swallowtails flittingabout throughout the world. Before modern agriculturalcrops were planted, it relied onnative hosts like water hemlock, water parsnip, and other wetland

plants. The species has adaptedto the changing landscape, andits caterpillars propensity formunching on members of thecarrot (Apiaceae) family car-rot, dill, parsley, fennel hasearned it an occasional reputa-tion as a pest, and the nicknameparsley worm. Its also com-monly found on Queen Anneslace.

In our little garden plot, withplenty of greens to go around,

the caterpillars became a happycuriosity rather than a nuisance. That summer we found so manyof them we became careful inharvesting the carrots. Wemoved most of the caterpillars toother food plants, but kept a fewin a makeshift cage with plentyof fresh carrot greens and longsticks for pupating.

The cage allowed us a close upview of some of the ways thatthis species evades predators.Like its Papilionidae cousins, the black swallowtail has devel-oped a number of defense mech-anisms, changing its tactics as it

moves from caterpillar tochrysalis to butterfly. During itsinitial two instars or skin shed-ding phases the caterpillar isspikey and dark brown exceptfor a white saddle that makes thelittle creeper look like a birddropping. What bird would wantto eat that? As the caterpillar

bulks up, it develops the waver-ing yellow stripes, mingled with

black and white ones, that firstcaught our attention. Thesestripes are a visual bluff, sug-gesting to predators that it may

be toxic. Any bird that has triedto nosh on an awful-tastingmonarch caterpillar is likely toeschew anything of similar col-oration.

A misleading appearance isntthe black swallowtails onlydefense. Like other Papilionidaespecies, the caterpillar usesanother snazzy mechanism toward off predators: an osmeteri-um. We noticed this forkedorange organ emerging fromnear the caterpillars head (tech-nically, its prothoracic region)each time we got too close. Thecaterpillars arch up as the osme-terium emerges, as if theyrecuriously exploring theirdomain. To us, the osmeterium

seemed jelly-like and harmless, but to smaller creatures a bird, for instance - the osmeteriummay look a bit like a snakestongue. This forked organ alsoreleases a foul smell, the resultof sequestered oils from thecaterpillars host plants, whichmay be enough to deter smaller

    would-be predators like ants orspiders.

Eventually, our caterpillarsattached to the sticks wed left inthe cage, and we watched asthey transformed into plain

brown chrysalises, so well cam-ouflaged it was difficult to dis-tinguish stick from pupa. This isyet another defense. In ourregion, black swallowtails mayhave two generations a year.Caterpillars that pupate earlier in

the summer create greenchrysalises to blend in with aleafy background. Those pupat-ing later in the season, as oursdid, do so in autumn brown.

The next spring, just as the firstperennials were blooming in thefront garden, the butterfliesemerged. Velvety-blackabdomens dotted with tiny whitespots held scalloped wings thatnarrowed to slender tips. Thedark wings of the male blackswallowtail are banded with yel-low. The female has, instead, arow of yellow spots, with a sum-mer-sky blue band along thehindwing. An orange eye spotdots each hindwing, and severalorange dots on the underside of

the wings are visible when thebutterflys wings are closed.

The coloration of the adult blackswallowtail offers a final protec-tion; the female, especially, resembles its slightly moresouthern cousin, the pipevineswallowtail (Battus philenor),which is toxic to many preda-

    tors.

We only noticed a fewswallowtails this summso far havent found anycaterpillars or pupae. Stread more carefullythrough the greenery in t

peering closely at thegreens as we pull them fgarden, looking for thatflash of yellow that woutend the flight of a blaclowtail butterfly come sp

Karen P. Bennett,UNH Cooperative Ext. Forester

Almost by definition, a walk inthe forest should relax, rejuve-nate and renew. Research and mypersonal experience shows this tobe true.

For the most part, when I walk inthe woods, I come home feelingrelaxed and happier than when Istarted. Walking in the woods isguaranteed to distract me fromwhatever ails mefamily, workor general malaise. There are justtoo many beautiful and magnifi-cent sights, even on the smallestwoodlots.

Though Im not typically awoods-worrier, lately one thinghas been bugging me during mywoods-walks and that is literallya bugthe emerald ash borer(EAB). This ash-killing, non-native insect was first found inthe U.S. in the Detroit area in2002. Detroit is one of the majorshipping ports in this countryhuge volumes of trade happensalong the Great Lakes, linked tothe Atlantic Ocean by way of theSt. Lawrence River. EAB wasshipped into this country onuntreated wood packaging

known as dunnage. Importedwood now needs to be heat-treat-ed, but this step was taken tooate to protect our ash.

In too few years EAB made itsway to 25 states, including NewHampshire. We found it inConcord in 2013. Though EAB isa good flier, it didnt traverse thecountry on its own. It radiatedout from the Midwest in nurserystock and wood products, espe-cially as campers brought theirnfested firewood with them on

camping trips. We now havequarantines in place limiting themovement of ash products, ncluding firewood, but EAB is

here to stay and the best we canhope is to slow the spread.

    Since EABs discovery, millions

of ash have died. Death is theunfortunate fate of ash infested

by emerald ash borer. Though wecan effectively inject street-sideand home-grown trees withinsecticides, the ash I see on mywoods-walks cant be treatedwith this way. There are toomany of them, too scattered, andit would be too costly.

When I cross streams or smallswales, or walk along largerstreams and rivers, or trompthrough northern hardwood

standsall places where the ashgrowI find my eye looking forash. If I spy one, I look for thetell-tale sign of the blonded

bark caused by woodpeckersflaking off the outer bark as theyforage for EAB larvae develop-ing in the life-giving cambiumand phloem.

I consider this unconscious atten-tionlooking for ash and thenlooking for the insect when I findthe ashas woods-worrying andI resent it, but I cant help it.

Though a minor component inmost New Hampshire forests, ashis a beautiful tree. Often

straighter than neighboring treesand limbless for most of its trunk, ash resemble light-colored,green-topped telephone polesscattered throughout the forest.Ash is economically valuableand grows in sensitive ecologicalareas like floodplains, black ashswamps, and enriched cove hard-wood stands at the base of slopes.I know of more than one woodlotowner who has nurtured ash as

part of their woodlot for decades, designating their ash as the croptreethe tree they plan to grow

for the longest time to the maxi-mum maturity. EAB has changedtheir plans.

As of this writing, weve foundEAB in ten New Hampshiretowns. Though not in GraftonCounty, weve found it in border-ing Sanbornton. The N.H.Division of Forests and Landsmaps known EAB-infestationsand also created managementzones with suggestions for home-owners and woodlot owners.Maps and recommendations areon www.nhbugs.org. If you haveash, we suggest you inventorythe size and value of your ash soyou can plan. I also invite you to

look for signs of EAB and if youfind a suspect tree or insect, report it including uploading pic-tures at www.nhbugs.org.

Im sorry to invite GraftonCounty residents to join me inworrying about the fate of yourash as you walk in the woods, butI cant help it.

    Littleton resident Bill Freeland.

A public hearing on proposed rule changes affecting wildliferehabilitator permits and the importation of fishing bait will beheld at 12:00 noon on Thursday, October 15, 2015, at the N.H.Fish and Game Department, 11 Hazen Drive, Concord, N.H.

The proposed changes also include a two-tier system of wildlife

rehabilitator permits; there would be an apprentice permit and afull wildlife rehabilitator permit. The complete rulemaking notice, with original and proposed rulelanguage for these proposals, can be viewed atwww.wildnh.com/legislative/proposed-rules.html.
