North West Area Closed Ippon League 2017/18

Following feedback & concerns from clubs, coaches, parents and players regarding the falling numbers of entries for the area’s three county closed competitions. The North West Area Committee has decided to launch an exciting new competition model that will ultimately decide the County & Area Champions of the future and who will go on to represent our Area at the National Teams Championships going forward. The North West Area Closed Ippon League will consist of 3 Fixtures (staged in Lancashire, Merseyside & Greater Manchester/Cheshire) and a Grand Final at Kendal Dojo. These fixtures will replace the area closed championships as well as the three county closed events that have previously had restrictions on who can enter. The new structure allows ANY North West Player to enter ALL of the league fixtures, regardless of their performance level or the North West County they reside in or represent. LEAGUE INFORMATION Players compete in weight categories in the following age-bands. Minors - 2009-2006 - Minimum Grade Yellow Belt (u12 Restrictions apply) Boys -27kg, -30kg, -34kg, -38kg, -42kg, -46kg, -50kg & +50kg Girls -28kg, -32kg, -36kg, -40kg, -44kg, -48kg, -52kg & +52kg Pre-Cadet / Cadet - 2005-2001 - Minimum Grade Orange Belt (Arm Locks/Strangles ARE NOT Permitted) Boys -34kg, -38kg, -42kg, -46kg, -50kg, -55kg, -60kg, -66kg, -73kg, +73kg Girls -36kg, -40kg, -44kg, -48kg, -52kg, -57kg, -63kg, -70kg, +70kg Junior / Senior - aged 14 and above - Minimum Grade Green Belt (Arm Locks/Strangles ARE Permitted) Boys -55kg, -60kg, -66kg, -73kg, -81kg, -90kg +90kg Girls -44kg, -48kg, -52kg, -57kg, -63kg, -70kg, +70kg League Points System League rules mirror that of the National Ippon League. NB points for medals will not be awarded if a player has failed to win a contest.

Entry Fee Online Entry - £15 per event Weight Category Rules Cadet / Pre-Cadet / Minors Players can move up a weight during the league season but can not then move back down. To promote healthy weight control, the scores Cadet / Pre-Cadet / Minors players achieve at each event will travel with the player should they grow out of a weight category. Junior / Senior players' scores will not travel with them if they change weight class mid season. Entry Rules & North West Squad Selection. When signing up for an event the player will choose a county in which to represent. Players may only represent the county that their club is affiliated to by the BJA (See next page; their club must be stated on team card) or the county stated on their home address (must be either Lancashire, Cheshire, Greater Manchester or Merseyside only). If your club is not stated on the list and you wish to be considered, please contact competitions@nwjudo.co.uk. County Representation cannot be changed during the season. At the end of the season, the highest ranked player from each county in each weight/age group will be crowned county champion and selected as part of the North West Squad for the following year. The player on the top of the league in each weight / age group will be crowned North West Area Champion. The Top 8 players on the league table in each weight class / age group following the final league fixture will also be selected to be part of the North West Squad for 2018/19. The North West Grand Final The top 8 players in the Ippon league would also be invited to compete in the North West Grand Final. The Grand Final would mirror the age and weight groups used for the national teams and the winner of this match will be chosen to represent the North West Area at the National Teams and second place will be picked as reserve. We do not expect our International Level Junior / Senior Judoka to participate in the North West Ippon League due to their busy schedules. Therefore these players who are currently on their National Team and ranked in the top 5 of the national ranking list will be given the opportunity outright to represent the area, at The National Team Championships. If this player takes up this opportunity, the number one ranked player at the Grand Final will go as their reserve. It is also our future intention to use the NW Grand Final Day to stage a 4 Counties Team Competition, whereby each county fields their best player in the league table at each age group & weight used in the ippon league. County Coaches would organise their teams and we are looking to start this in the 2018/19 season.
