UMW Emblem

The emblem of United Methodist Women, the cross and the flame, symbolizes our organization. The cross and the flame are ancient

symbols of the church and appear on The United Methodist Church emblem. Both symbols remind us of the opportunities

and obligations of discipleship.

As United Methodist Women, we share our gift of God with others through mission. We are a group of Christian women with many gifts

who are unified by one Spirit. We participate in God’s mission in all areas of life.

The cross reminds us to follow in the steps of Jesus in our lives. The flame originates from Pentecost and resonates — even today — in

Paul’s words to Timothy: “… I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you …” (2 Timothy 1:6).

The emblem reminds us of our PURPOSE of growing in our

understanding of and willingness to participate in the global ministries of the church. Our foremothers — women who pioneered in service for the church at home and in other countries — were advocates for

change. Change and growth continue to be at the heart of United Methodist Women’s sisterhood and mission.

UMW Purpose

United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship, and

to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.

MESSAGE FROM THE NTC UMW PRESIDENT

Greetings to all! “Now all glory to God, who is able, through His mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think.” Ephesians 3:20

We want to thank God for blessing our lives, our actions, and our activities so graciously during our 2016 United Methodist Women year. Our theme for the year was “For Such a Time as This.” It was a season of love all year with ministry to youth, children, and women around the world. Times of fellowship festivity gave us an opportunity to bask in faith, hope, and love in action with United Methodist Women of the North Texas Conference. We had a year filled with joy surrounded with love from the conference, districts, and local organizations of UMW through events, meetings, and social activities. Anticipation for 2017 is high, and we expect no more than the best, because God is at the front our actions, and His love is great. Because He lives, we too shall live. “With the power of God within us, we need never fear the powers around us.” Woodrow Kroll Yours in Christ, Mae Alexander Mae H. Alexander President North Texas Conference (NTC) United Methodist Women (UMW)

GOALS AND STRATEGIES: 2017

Accepted/Approved: November 5, 2016 1. NTC UMW Mission Team members will visit local non-English-speaking churches in the North Texas

Conference (NTC). 2. Use the UMW “Welcoming Event Toolkit”

(www.unitedmethodistwomen.org/member-toolkit) at meetings to help attendees feel welcomed and more comfortable.

3. Improve communication among UMW local units,

districts, conference organizations, and the public in the local community, newspapers, television, radio, and social media to increase awareness of the UMW purpose and the work of Texas Impact (www.texasimpact.org).

4. Secure commitments from NTC UMW districts to

identify and complete hands-on mission projects. 5. Improve communication to district and local units about

contributing to the UMW Legacy Fund.

6. Publicize the four UMW focus areas for 2017 to districts and local units.

7. Because National UMW no longer promotes “Mission

Today” and to bring new enthusiasm throughout NTC UMW, the NTC UMW mission team will appoint a committee consisting of at least the four (4) conference mission coordinators to develop a new recognition program for local UMW units.

ANNUAL REPORT: 2016

End-of-Year Report 2016: Mae Alexander, President God didn’t go halfway when he went to work on my behalf. He did it all. Even I couldn’t feel him, even when I couldn’t sense him, even when I wasn’t holding on to him anymore. God worked on my behalf. He didn’t need me to do a thing! The year 2016 started out with UMW Leadership Development Days (LDD) Training in Lake Junaluska, North Carolina, where the theme “For Such A Time As This” was used. It was greatly exhibited and executed. All of the new members of the North Texas Conference UMW team attended it together. We had a sizable attendance in February at the Sing-A-Rainbow at First UMC-Alvarado. I was able to attend the Laity Day with the Bishop after the meeting in Alvarado. Both meetings were good. The NTC UMW had a great attendance of women at the South Central Jurisdiction Quadrennial in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. We experienced the “Fresh Wind Blowing.” This was a great experience--one to write home about. It was full of ideas and activities we could bring back to our conference to put our commitment of Faith, Hope and Love into action. Our Spiritual Growth Retreat was April 29-30, 2016, at Camp Copass in Denton, Texas. It was greatly attended and spirit-filled. Hats off to the ladies that worked the NTC Annual Conference meeting booth at St. Andrew UMC in Plano, Texas. They did a great job! Mission u for 2016 was held at two locations: Faith UMC-Denton in Denton, Texas, and First UMC-Rowlett in Rowlett,

End-of-Year Report 2016: Mae Alexander, President Texas. I personally taught the Latin America study in Denton. This was the last year for the study. North Texas Conference UMW was given an opportunity to go Perkins School of Theology at SMU to talk to prospective UMC ministers in October. This was a time where we talked about the United Methodist Women during CHAP, and Priscilla Pope-Levison set this up for us. We are grateful to her for the opportunity. The NTC UMW Annual Meeting in October was greatly enhanced by the presence and presentation of our guest speaker, Staci Hawkins, UMW Women’s Division. She is from the Texas Conference in Houston, Texas. It was indeed a gratifying experience, “For Such A Time As This.” We had a good attendance at our NTC UMW Planning/Leadership Training at Walnut Hill UMC in early November. We also worked on the NTC UMW goals and strategies for 2017. We closed out the year with an NTC UMW Holiday Bazaar benefiting the UMW Legacy Fund at Suncreek UMC in Allen, Texas where ladies were able to shop and make contributions to the Legacy Fund. My journey as a Christian has been made stronger with the work we do as United Methodist Women and the studies that we do in Mission u. May God continue to bless us all.

ANNUAL REPORT: 2016

End-of-Year Report 2016: Gwendolyn Young, Vice President

The theme for the year was “For Such a Time as This,” and it was taken from the book of Esther, Chapter 4. I attended Leadership Development Training held in January at the Lake Junaluska, North Carolina. I attended the Spiritual Growth Retreat at Camp Compass in Denton, Texas. I created a successful recruitment booth at the North Texas Annual Conference in June 2016. I put together a well-executed and well-attended NTC UMW Annual Meeting at First UMC-Plano, and a gift of a keepsake coffee mug was presented to everyone in attendance at the annual meeting from the NTC UMW mission team. In the month of December 2016, I installed the officers at Calvary United Methodist Church. The theme was carried throughout the year at each event. We thank God and continue to pray for every phase of the work of United Methodist Women as we continue to focus on issues and our actions for women, youth, and children around the world being led by God "For Such a Time as This.”

The team is made up of two women from each jurisdiction in the U. S. and is headed up by Janis Rosheuvel (Executive Secretary for Racial Justice). Prayer Partners were made available for all of our conference team at the January meeting by drawing NTC UMW mission team members’ names from a hat. I coordinated and promoted the 90-minute presentation by the North Texas Area Anti-Racism Team at Grace UMC, Sherman, in February 2016. Women’s Sunday was held at my church (Grace UMC, Sherman) in May, with April Johnson-Bristow as our guest of honor. I attended the South Central Jurisdiction weekend event in Oklahoma City.

End-of-Year Report 2016: Shirley Pleasant President, Metro District

Greetings to My UMW Sisters! With God’s help and support, the Metro District has been true to our purpose by growing and learning together while we serve women, youth and children globally with our attendance and active participation in the following:

• Spiritual Growth Retreats • Legislative Event in Austin, Texas • Supported with our contribution & attendance at

Charleston Methodist Hospital While this listing is only a small portion of the mission opportunities in which we actively participated in 2016. There are many other services and projects our helping hands and minds have been committed to educating our units regarding the global crisis that is affecting us today and will be tomorrow. If we don’t join forces with each other, our communities, and churches to help rectify some of these critical issues listed below:

• Anti-Oppression • Climate Justice • Maternal & Child Health • Wealth Inequality

End-of-Year Report 2016: Shirley Pleasant President, Metro District

• Mass Incarceration • Economic Inequality

I am thankful for our Mission u study for this year that presented educational studies on; The Bible and Human Sexuality and Climate Justice. Both of these studies was truly our call for UMW to go into Action. A Fresh Wind is Blowing in our direction. The Fresh Wind is Blowing Faith, Hope and Love. So let us get busy fulfilling our Purpose, not fainting by the wayside. No you don’t see the wind, but you feel it swirling all around you calling to you softly, “Stay up, and continue to tend to my garden”…..save the planet, feed my sheep and teach all about, Jesus, Justice and Joy. I look forward to continued service to God to whom we give all the glory for our health and strength as we rise each and every day as a unified body of committed women to continue to live out our purpose…”to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ.” With our complete PURPOSE in mind, I encourage each of us to renew our strength by reading Galatians 6:9 which reads, “and let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” The Metro 2016 Project for this year was preparing UMCOR - School Kits and Bag. We were successful in preparing well over200+ bags for UMCOR. We were also fortunate to make a donation to the Dallas Bethlehem Center’s Star Match program in the amount of $1,071 to be matched by other donors. As I reviewed our stats for the year The Metro District of the North Texas Conference has 51 active local groups. There were 84 new members reported for the past year and we are blessed

to have a total membership of 2,658 members thanks to our excellent membership tabulations by Joyce Whiteley, our Vice President. I was also very happy to discover the metro district has 11 active members serving in Leadership positions on the North Texas Conference United Methodist Women Mission Team. Our Annual Leadership Development was held Saturday, November 19, 2016, at First Lancaster UMC located at 201 S. Dallas Ave., Lancaster, TX 75146. My prayer is that we will all have a fresh wind blowing the Holy Spirit in our direction as we give the best of our service to our North Texas Conference in 2017.
