From the Back of the Champ Warm winter greetings fellow Studebaker enthusiasts (about this time of the year we need it). And for all of our members that have forsaken our cold fair state this time of year – wimps (albeit warm ones…).

The title for my column is misleading this time of year because the Champ is parked in the garage up north, waiting for warm, dry roads – yep, also a wimp. Hopefully we have a thaw by the middle of May for our “Get Your Studies Out” event at Ed and Jean’s in Annandale on Saturday, May 18th.I’d like to thank Maynard Lemke and Tom Ketelsen for their years of service to the chapter. When you see them at a chapter meeting or function, give them a big hug of thanks.New chapter officers are Joan Lemke continuing as Treasurer, Bob Shaw as Board Director and I’m back as President. Minutes of the special and last regular Board meeting are included in the newsletter. The next membership meeting is Thursday, March 7th at 7 p.m. at the Culvers Restaurant in New Brighton (4004 Silver Lake Rd NE Minneapolis, MN 55421). We will be in the southern party room. There will be a Chapter Board meeting at 6 p.m. Many members come early to eat. Everyone is welcome to attend the Board meeting. If you have anything you would like on the Agenda, give me a call or email. My contact information is at the bottom of the column. (I did change email vendors a while ago so please check you have my updated email address.)For the membership meeting, please bring in your favorite Studebaker related Memorabilia, literature, ads, pictures, pins, charts and videos. We will have a show and tell. I know members have lots of cool stuff. In April, please bring your Studebaker related toys, watches and any of those “AC”- accessory parts for the Studebakers, many times installed by the dealer. Please bring those items to the April chapter meeting at the Black Smith Lounge in Hugo (1 p.m. meeting, Saturday, April 4th).And, at the May 18th meeting, bring your vehicle! Get the Studies Out , at Ed and Jean’s place in Annandale, always a great time – I can’t wait to be driving our Studebakers again…We will be sponsoring the two car shows at the Black Smith Lounge in Hugo on Memorial Day and Labor Day. Tom Maeyaert, (763-497-5164) is heading up the Car Show Committee. We really need your help assisting with putting on these events. Please call Tom and volunteer a couple of hours at these shows, the major fund raiser for our chapter.Call or email me with any comments, suggestions, issues or ideas about OUR great chapter. See you March 7th. Take care.Dean Elstad, President, NSC-SDC [email protected] • 763-560-9191

NORTH STAR CHAPTER ANNUAL BANQUETSaturday, January 12, 2013 • Lake Elmo Inn

Bob Shaw announced that he has resigned as the National Studebaker Drivers Club webmaster. He has become a member of the SDC Marketing Committee whose purpose is to increase membership. He has started the SDC Communique which will forward information to all SDC Chapters to help them increase their membership. The committee is creating banners and advertisements which will go into various car magazines such as Hennings. The purpose of the annual banquet is to install the new officers to the Board. There are 3 positions up for reelection - the President, one Director and the Treasurer positions. The President and the Director position are open and Joan Lemke is running for another term as Treasurer. Bob Waitz explained that no candidates came forward through the nomination process. Therefore the Board must appoint someone to fill the open positions. Several people have come forward and have expressed an interest in these positions. An emergency Board meeting will be set up to determine

who will be appointed to the open positions and since there is no language in the by-laws to take care of this situation and as Presiding President Bob asked that the present Board members in office stay in office until the Board can decide on this issue. There were no objections from the membership and Bob’s ruling stands. By PETER SANT I had been looking for a tonneau cover to fit my “new” Champ truck but met with no success. So I put out a question on the Studebaker Truck Forum. I had no response until much later when I got an e-mail from a fellow by the name of Ed who said he had obtained a tonneau cover through A.M. Maus Company (a Chrysler dealer in Kimball, Minnesota) that fit his Champ truck perfectly. After a few e-mails back and forth, along with a few pictures supplied by Ed (accompanying this article), I decided to buy a cover from A.M. Maus. After about five weeks, I got a little concerned so I contacted Ed again and he responded right away that he had got hold of Rob at A.M. Maus and the tonneau was being shipped that day. I thanked Ed profusely for his efforts. FedEx came in four days with a huge package containing my tonneau. All the parts looked really well-made, with a set of simple instructions. Unfortunately, my truck is in Winter storage so I cannot install it yet.

Should anybody else be in the market for a tonneau cover for a 1963-64 Champ truck with the long wide bed, I can highly recommend buying one via A.M. Maus. The tonneau cover is from Truxedo and it is model Lo Pro QT soft roll-up cover. The company will custom-make a cover to fit any truck if you provide the dimensions. It just so happens that Ed has the same 1964 Champ truck so Truxedo had the correct specifications for my order.

After my cover arrived, I read the latest issue of the Studebanner and made the connection. I asked Ed to confirm my suspicions and he did. His full name is Ed Skomoroh and his father is Michael Skomoroh, a former Studebaker dealer in Dryden, Ontario whom our club is honouring with his name on the plaque at the SDC museum in South Bend, Indiana. Small world, isn’t it? No wonder Ed was so helpful. He is a Studebaker guy! [email protected]

Re-printed from the March/April 2013 issue of the Studebanner, the Official Newsletter of the Studebaker Drivers Club, Ontario Chapter

Here are pictures of Ed Skomoroh’s 1964 Champ with its tonneau cover. Ed got stake pocket covers from a Ford and had them painted to match the body so it makes for a good look. Resting on top is his 1902 Goat Wagon. Ed’s pickup is a 259 4-speed with air and power steering installed which makes it a breeze to park or maneuver slowly in a parking lot. The interior has been completely redone in red and while vinyl.

Board Members Present: Tom and Becky Ketelsen, Bob Waitz, Joan and Maynard Lemke, Dean Elstad, Kerry Jackson, Keith Rust, Jim Gieselman, Bob Shaw, Henry Votel, Tom Maeyaert, Ed Skomoroh, Jim and Andy Ringquist. Dean Elstad welcomed everyone to the first regular Board Meeting of 2013 of the Studebaker North Star Chapter.Bob Waitz passed out a bag of wooden nickels to each Board member. The wooden nickels are to serve as a means to increase membership and event popularity. Ed Skomoroh asked how the wooden nickels would work. Bob explained that it was a means to draw people to our web site. If someone drove their Studebaker to an outside club event and you were aware of it, you could drop a wooden nickel on the front seat. The nickel has a QR code on it. The person would then scan the QR code and it would bring the person direct to our club web site. We are hopeful that the person would find an interest there and join the club. We could go further and if a person obtained several wooden nickels we could offer incentives like half price for one of our car shows or $5.00 off membership dues. Please check your most recent newsletter for a more detailed report on the wooden nickels. Dean Elstad appointed Bob Waitz as the North Star wooden nickel coordinator, coordinating with Bob Shaw, to make this incentive work.Maynard Lemke mentioned that in the past the club had a calling committee. Certain members would call other club members and remind them of an event coming up. Thus increasing membership at the event. The discussion then turned to the club roster and how to get this roster out to club members. Various suggestions on how to do this were discussed.Bob Waitz made a motion, seconded by Jim Gieselman, that we would put a link on the newsletter which gets emailed to club members. Said member could then go to the link which would take them to the roster and they could print the roster out. At the same time there would be a phone number in the newsletter and members who get the newsletter mailed to them could call the number and have a roster mailed to them. There was no further discussion. All were in favor and the motion passed.

NORTH STAR CHAPTER BOARD MEETINGJanuary 31, 2013 • Lunds, Plymouth

There was a discussion on the flyers for the club car shows. Bob Shaw said they were ready to print with the Memorial Day car show on one side and the Labor Day car show on the other side. Bob Waitz volunteered to get these printed. These flyers need to go into the MCCA car show directory. A meeting for this directory is being held in a couple of weeks and the cost to be a member of MCCA is $25.00. Dean asked for volunteers who could attend this meeting and represent the North Star Car Club. Bob Shaw and Henry Votel volunteered to attend the meeting and take care of business..Joan Lemke inquired at this time whether the club would once again sponsor trophies for the 2013 regional meeting in St. Louis and the International Meet in Colorado Springs, CO.Andy Ringquist made the motion, seconded by Bob Waitz, that the club sponsor trophies for the 2013 Regional Meeting in St. Louis for $100.00; for the 2013 International Meeting in Colorado Springs for $105.00; and the $25.00 fee for the annual membership dues for the MCCA. There was no further discussion. All were in favor and the motion passed. There was discussion on the annual Studebaker Swap Meet held in September of every year. This has been sponsored by the Wisconsin and the Minnesota Studebaker clubs. Tom reported that he had just been at a meeting of the Swap Meet Committee. He reported that it will be held in Menominee, WI again in 2013; there will be a $5.00 charge for vendor space; and there was concern about the number of North Star Chapter volunteers for the swap meet.

After further discussion, Bob Shaw made a motion, seconded by Bob Waitz, that the North Star Chapter discontinue their participation in the Swap Meet. There was no further discussion. All were in favor and the motion passed. In a past meeting Henry Votel brought up for board discussion and determination whether or not the North Star Chapter would like to sponsor another regional meet. Henry reported that he would check with Duane Miller, our Regional Zone Coordinator and report back but he believes next year has a sponsor. The board tabled this action for a future meeting.Dean mentioned that the next membership meeting is being held at Lynde’s restaurant in Osseo, MN on Thursday, February 7.There was discussion about future board meetings being held on the same date as membership meetings. Thereby hoping to get more members to attend board meetings to stay more in touch and get more familiar with how the club and board operates. The board members would like all members to become more active in the club and are hoping more members would be willing to serve on the board. It is a good way to preserve interest in Studebakers, to meet more people and to make decisions on matters of concern for the club.Bob Waitz made a motion, seconded by Joan Lemke, to have the next board meeting prior to the membership meeting on March 7, 2013. There was no further discussion. All were in favor and the motion passed. Therefore, the board meeting will be at 6:00 PM at Culver’s and the membership meeting will start at 7:00 PM on Thursday, March 7th. All are welcomed and encouraged to attend.Andy Ringquist made the motion, seconded by Bob Waitz, to adjourn the meeting. There was no further discussion. All were in favor and the motion passed. In order to get these minutes out to the membership the minutes are being submitted for publication but will not be approved until the March 7, 2013 board meeting.Meeting AdjournedRespectfully submitted, Andy Ringquist, Secretary
