Synopsis of Scenes

In 1940, Walt Disney Studios released its second

feature-length animated ! lm, “Pinocchio.” At that time

the movie was regarded for its realistic animation

and won two Academy Awards. In 2000, Disney

released, “Geppetto,” a new live-action T.V. movie

starring Drew Carey and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. The

movie turned the traditional story on its head by

exploring Pinocchio’s quirks from Geppetto’s point

of view. In 2006, the movie was adapted for the the

stage and renamed, “My Son Pinocchio.”

Who’s Who?Greg Holt (Director) received a Master’s in directing from the University

of Denver, and has directed in Chicago, Washington D.C., and St. Louis.

He is the Artistic Director at the Waterloo Community Playhouse (where

Spamalot is playing until June 11th). This is the sixth North Star show

that Greg has directed, and he says, “I am delighted, as always, to be a

part of North Star’s drama project.” Greg would like to thank his lovely

family for their support!

Bill Close (Set Design) is an award-winning pastel and wood artist, who

enjoys life on his small acreage while spending his time “traveling, mowing,

and making art.” He retired in 2002 after 33-years of teaching art at Peet Jr.

High in Cedar Falls where 9th grade classes made the 23 “mega-sculptures”

that are featured in a book, “BIG,” Bill published last year. He has provided his

expertise to North Star for six plays and two art shows.

Chelsey Linza (Blue Fairy) volunteered to play Veruca Salt in “Willy Wonka,”

in 2011 and states she “fell in love with the participants, and North Star, as an

organization.” So much so, that she has worked for North Star as a Day Hab

Specialist for six years! Chelsey lives in Waterloo and enjoys photography.

She would like to say, “Thanks to Ethan and Darlene for their love and

support.” This is Chelsey’s fourth North Star credit.

David Stamp (Geppetto) has worked on many shows at the Waterloo

Community Playhouse, Black Hawk Children’s Theatre, and Cedar Falls

Community Theatre. By day he is an attorney, by night he plays in the band,

“Sideshow Bob.” David, his wife Linda, and all three of their sons are active in

music and theatre. However, David relates, “they are all far more talented at

these things than I am, so you should see them if you can!”

Joy Thorson (Stage Manager) has appeared in 20 shows at the Cedar Falls

Community Theatre, and recently made her Waterloo Community Playhouse

debut. Retired from UNI, Joy and husband, Rod, have two daughters and four

grandchildren. Joy shares that she has been to Tanzania twice and is the vice-

president of the Cedar Falls Food Co-Op (coming Fall 2018).

Director’s Notes

Pinocchio (“eye made of pine”) originally appeared, in a

story by Carlo Collodi, 135 years ago. Disney popularized

little Pinocchio’s story further in the 1940 movie. And now

North Star is giving the wooden puppet new life on the

GBPAC stage!

It has been a delightfully fun adventure. The folks at North

Star, and the many volunteers who help with each production, have made

this a journey worth savoring. And collaborating with talented artists, like set

designer, Bill Close, is a particular joy.

A special thanks goes out to each of you as well. This is a welcoming

community - one that celebrates diversity - and feels that each person has

something to o er. That is a valuable quality to have, and one that makes us

all stronger.

In the show, Pinocchio sings a song with his fellow puppets about the strings

that tie them down. But, Pinocchio is unique because he has no strings

holding him down. All of us should celebrate the moments in our lives when

we are able to feel that freedom too! This performance o ers all of the actors

just such a special opportunity. It’s a chance to leave behind the constraints of

daily life and shine on stage.

We want you to enjoy the show - listen to your conscience - “wish upon a star,”

and may all your “dreams come true!”

- - Greg Holt
