This morning the blindman and his one-leggedpartner, tethered to eachother by a length of rope, will brace themselves fora breath-stealing plungeinto the frigid watersurrounding the islanddungeon.

All around them bodyafter body will drop into thesea beside them, strugglingto nd their bearings sothat they can begin thelong swim through choppyopen water to the mainland. The two men will be inmore peril than all theirco-conspirators, their tetheruniting their fates. If onegoes down into the depths, the other will follow.

This is Escape fromAlcatraz. It isnt, however,a jail break. In fact, thetwo men about to take theplunge Burnabys BrianCowie andWestVancouversMeyrick Jones arenthardened criminals at all. They are two great friendswith a story as inspirationalas it is unique. Both havefelt suffering that pushedthem to the edge of death, and both are now beaconsof life, pushing each otherto the limits of humanachievement.

They wont be thinkingabout that today though.Theyll be thinking aboutthose jagged rocks aroundAlcatraz, and how to get thehell away from them so thatthey can crawl out of SanFrancisco Bay and begin thenext leg of their incrediblejourney.

For the rst few minutes, itwas just screaming.

It was excruciating,Jones remembers. It was theworst pain you can imagine.

It was August of 1995and Jones, aVancouvernative who was about toenter his fourth year ofstudies at the Universityof British Columbia, hadtaken a quick trip downthe coast with his thengirlfriend to visit SanFrancisco. An unfortunateset of coincidences led himdirectly into harms way.Thepair wanted to take a tripto Alcatraz but all the boats

were full.As a substitute, they opted for a ride on oneof the citys iconic cablecars, cheering their luck asthey avoided a long wait bygetting the last two spots atthe back of a car crammedfull of tourists.

We were right at theback corner, which wethought was a great placeto be because we could seethings better than if we werein the middle, says Jones.

Nearby a pair of workerswere doing maintenanceon another cable car.Theystepped away withoutproperly securing it and, after a few minutes, thebig hunk of steel slippedout of its barn and startedrolling down San Franciscosfamous Nob Hill.Thecars dont have engines the underground cablesupplies the power so asit dropped towards Jones itwas virtually silent.

The runaway car didnttravel far only about10 feet but it was spaceenough to gain plenty ofmomentum on the steephill. When it slammed intothe trolley that Jones wasriding on, everyone on boardscrambled off, stunned bythe force of the impact.Everyone, that is, except forMeyrick Jones. The emptycars front bumper jumpedup upon contact, hitting theexact spot where Jones wasstanding in a stairwell. Hewas stuck. While everyoneelse scrambled, he couldonly scream. And screamand scream. Eyewitnessesquoted in later media reportsall mentioned the terriedscreaming.

Joness right leg and footwere broken in multipleplaces. His left leg wasworse.

As an army of reghtersraced towards the scene,Jones began to regainrational thought. Was heabout to bleed to death? Didhe need a tourniquet? Heasked his girlfriend to crouchdown and look below thewreckage. Was there a hugepool of blood?

She looked, and reportedback that there wasnt bloodrushing from his legs. Ina series of horrible events,Jones had his rst luckybreak: the cars were melded

together and his legs wereclamped, somewhat sealingthe wounds.

That was one reallylucky thing, he says. If theyhad hit and then separated,I likely would have bled todeath.

Fireghters then got towork separating the twocars. As the minutes passed, they started to improvise, their normal extraction toolsfailing to get the job done.

(The cars) are reallyold and theyre heavy steel,Jones says. Theyre not likeToyotaTercels. The Jaws ofLife didnt work.

Out came sledgehammersand circular saws.Complicating the matterwas the fact that they were

still perched on that hill.Fireghters didnt want toseparate the two cars onlyto have another runawaycareening down the slope towage more destruction.Theclock kept ticking.Thirtyminutes. Sixty minutes.Jones was given somepain medication but wasconscious the entire time.

One reghter wasassigned the job of focusingsolely on Jones, talking tohim throughout the entireordeal. At one point Jonesgot into a panic about healthinsurance.Would he be stuckwith a huge hospital billwhen this was all over?Theresponse almost dragged alaugh out of the ery pain.

    Dont you worry, I think

youre going to be OK, theman said.

Finally, 90 minutes afterimpact, Jones was freedfrom the wreckage, loadedinto an ambulance boundfor San Francisco Generaland knocked out by painmedication. He now creditsthe reghter in his face forhelping him get to that point.

In retrospect he wasntentirely truthful, says Jones. But I think that was a goodcall on his part.

When Jones awoke heopened his eyes to a roomfull of doctors and hospitaladministrators staring backat him.

Youve been in anaccident, they said.Your leftleg has been badly damaged.

Theres no circulation in thelower leg, parts of which arealready gone. The best thingto do would be to amputateit, they said. Do you consentto this?

Jones signed his consentand almost immediately wasput back to sleep. Beforehe went under, however,he watched as a doctorapproached his bed with amarker and drew a big X onhis leg.

It was a bit shocking, says Jones. They do it rightthen and there, right in frontof you. It was an odd thing.

He later found out thatdoctors do that so that theydont remove the wrong leg. Both his legs looked terrible. When he woke up again, theleft one was gone below theknee.

Youre famous, thewoman sharing a recoveryroom with him said. With hisfamily arriving to comforthim, Jones was shown thelocal newspapers. He wasfront-page news.

Brian Cowies loss wasmore subtle, but just asshocking. When he was22, almost the same age asJones was when his accidentoccurred, Cowie wasdiagnosed with Stargardtdisease, a condition thatcauses progressive vision lossusually to the point of legalblindness. Cowie could stillsee quite well at the time ofthe diagnosis but he felt hiswhole future being shroudedin darkness.Though doctorswere not specic abouthow much of his eyesighthe would lose and howquickly it would go, Cowieconvinced himself hed beblind, and maybe even dead, within 10 years.

For some reason Ididnt think I would makeit past 33, he says.Withan expiration date alreadystamped on his mind, Cowiestarted to think of himself asspoiled goods.

If I cant see, whats thepoint, the voice in his headsaid. I dont care if I die.Lifes not worth living ifyou cant drive a car, do allthe things that your friendsdo. How am I going to nda girlfriend?Who wants tohang around with a blindguy?

He started living likeworthless meat as well, partying all the time andhanging around the scarycorners ofVancouver. Inthe rst few years after the

Fresh Global DelicacyComes To The QuayChefs around the world are passionateabout food. When it comes to wildmushrooms, they will go to almost anylengths to get their hands on thesesavoury delicacies. Fresh or dried in soups, stews or grilled with meat, they elevate mealsto the level of art. In 2009, expert foragersJeremy Budd and Austin Glenn began WestCoastWild Foods and travelled to the NorthwestTerritories for wild Morel mushroom season. They purchased, processed and sold theirharvest and have been growing ever since-earning the respect and business of chefs andfood suppliers around the world.

In March of 2014, they opened their first retaillocation at North Vancouvers Lonsdale Quay. There they make the bounty they find in theforests available to North Shore and Vancouverconsumers.

From fresh and dried wild mushrooms tonettles, wild asparagus, wild BC maple syrupand wild BC Elderflower syrup, their expertiseand passion are opening up a whole new worldof food choices for Lower Mainland foodies.

Right now, its fresh Morelmushroom season andthis years harvest has thepotential to be very good.Picked in the Yukon and flownin daily, West Coast WildFoods fresh Morels are anexcellent source of vitamin B,vitamin D, iron and fibre. Theyadd depth to any meal- fromomelettes to steaks- and arein demand in the best kitchensacross the country.

Morels are one of the most sought after fooditems by chefs throughout the world, saysJeremy. They are very versatile and full offlavour. I love them in a tomato or cream pastasauce or in an omelette. There are so manyways to prepare them.We have some amazingrecipes at the store and on our website atwestcoastwildfoods.com.

The picking location is different each season. The Morels are wild harvested in areas thathad forest fires the year before. This year theharvest is in the Yukon, where local first nationsresidents and foragers from across Canadahave come to bring the crop to market in aseason that lasts from May until August.

While much of the crop is dried for year-roundconsumption, West Coast Wild Foods is settingaside fresh mushrooms to share with theircustomers at their Lonsdale Quay location. speculate what use the skulland claws would have butsaid it is the rst time shehas seen them harvestedfrom a dead bear.

It suggests thatsomebody was interested inthe bear and was likely notan ethical hunter, she said.

    The incident has been

disturbing and equallybafing for ChristineMiller, education co-ordinator for the BlackBear Society.

Its right by akids camp.Thatsreally thoughtless andirresponsible, Miller said.I cant say for sure thatits poaching but it doeshappen in B.C., denitely.

I didnt expect to see it inour backyard.

Bear hunting season inB.C. runs from April 1 toJune 15, though hunting isnot allowed on the NorthShore. Its possible that thebear was killed somewherewhere hunting is allowedand then dumped hereafter its parts wereharvested, Page said.

Miller and Page areboth hopeful someonewill come forward withinformation about the bear.

So far there are no leadsand no witnesses.

If anybody does haveany information, pleasegive us a call, said Page. The hotline to reportpoaching is 1-877-952-7277.

Pair of pups likely inMexicobulldog puppies six yearsago. When she and Douglassplit up three years later,Douglas moved to Mexico, where hes been full-timefor the past two years, shesaid.Woods kept and caredfor the dogs.

But recently, whilevisiting family in NorthVancouver, Douglas learnedthatWoods was planning tomove to England.Woodssaid she was contacted byDouglass mother, whosaid her son wanted to saygoodbye to the dogs for alast time.

I didnt particularly likethe idea, saidWoods, butagreed to let Douglas takethe dogs out for a walk.

He was polite.Everything was cordial, shesaid. We had no suspicionof what was to come.

    Then last Friday the

day before she was to leavethe country Woods saidDouglas asked if he couldhave one nal night withthe dogs.

I was so busy packing, Isaid OK, she said.

It wasnt until she gotup the next morning thatshe received an email fromDouglas.

Please dont hate mefor life, it started.

I was shaking withanger and rage, she said. Iknew hed done somethingterrible.

In the email, DouglastoldWoods, This is notan easy decision to make, but that he had decided hewouldnt forgive myselfif he let the two dogs go toEngland and was takingthem away. He added heplanned to go into hidingwith the dogs.

I truly think this is thebest forToby and Emma,

he concluded, adding hehopedWoods would forgivehim one day.

Instead,Woods cancelledher ight and got onthe phone with consularofcials, border authoritiesand the police.

So far, ofcials haveconrmed Douglas crossedthe border into the UnitedStates in a friends carwith the dogs earlier thatmorning and has sincereturned to Mexico.

Woods said she suspectsher ex has taken the dogsto either the PuertoVallartaarea where he had beenliving or to Guadalajara, where his girlfriend lives.

Richard De Jong, spokesman for the NorthVancouver RCMP, saidtechnically the dogs areconsidered property.

Ofcers investigatingthe case have forwardeda report to Crown

counsel, recommendingthat Douglas be chargedwith theft. If a chargeis approved, it means awarrant could be put outfor Douglas and he couldbe arrested if he comes backto Canada.

De Jong said its notunheard of for couplesto ght over pets whenrelationships end, but itsquite uncommon for acriminal charge to be laid.

He added whensomeone is crossing bordersin a car, usually customsofcials do not questionwho owns the dogs in theback seat.

So far police have beenunable to reach Douglas onhis phone, he added.

Meanwhile,Woodssaid her own plans arecompletely on hold whileshe tries to nd the dogsand get them back.

    She said the ordeal

has already cost her $900to cancel her ights andwill likely end up costingher thousands more toeventually rebook.Woodssaid shes hoping locals inthe PuertoVallarta area mayhave seen the dogs, whichshe worries will not do wellin the heat of a Mexicansummer.

When I am driving, cyclists are often a hazard. They block trafc, they oftendont obey street signs andthey typically act as thoughthe rules of the road dontapply to them.Worst of allthey have an entitled attitude

because they are the onessaving the planet. The otherday I was approaching afour-way stop and a cyclistapproached and sailed rightthrough as though the stopsign didnt apply to him.

When I drove up andconfronted him about thisI got self-righteous babblein return. So to all of youcyclists, I will have moretolerance for you whenyou exercise some caution

and offer courtesy to othervehicles on the road.

As a cyclist, when I amon the road I am aware that Iam on 20 lbs. of carbon breand that I am vulnerable; Iwill never win against a carand if I get into an accidentin trafc it will be serious (ifnot fatal).

At intersections I move tothe front in order to be seenand so I dont get caughtin among cars as they start

to accelerate. My brakesare not nearly as precise asthey are in my truck and ifI apply them too hard andI lock a wheel I will eitherlose control or go overmy handlebars. So if I gothrough an intersection atthe bottom of a steep hillwhere there is a four-waystop, I am doing it because itis safer than having to cometo a full stop quickly.

    Please, motorists.While

I am a vehicle on the road,I am not the same as you sogive me space and latitude tostay safe.

And if you want todiscuss rules of the road, dont do it through yourwindow while you aredriving. Getting borne downon by a vehicle while beingon a bike feels like gettingpicked on by a bully.Stephen SmithNorthVancouver

How does that old sayinggo for young familiesgoing to a wedding?

Something old, something new, somethingborrowed, somethingblue that you can strangleyourself with for forgettingto never, ever bring yourkids to a wedding? A classicblue noose perhaps? Anelegant, but strong, silkblue tie? Maybe, if all elsefails, a nearby bit of blueextension cord?

Wedding season is hereagain. My little family hasalready taken one in thisyear and we forgot the onefundamental lesson welearned during last yearswedding season: dontbring the family!

As a guest at manyweddings both beforeand after I had kids, Ivelearned the rhythms of theday in each situation.Tolet you know how I arrivedat the conclusion that youshould never bring kids to awedding, heres a samplingof what those blessed daysare like when experiencedwith and without the kids.Arrival, without kids:

Weddings are often heldat beautiful places likebeaches, galleries, golfcourses or fancy churches. Those quiet, excitingfew moments before aceremony begins are aperfect time to drink in allthe exquisite scenery andcleavage on display (forbrevitys sake, lets call itcleavery).Arrival, with kids:Weddings are usually heldin death traps like beaches, galleries, golf courses orchurches. As other guestsare enjoying the cleavery, parents of young childrenare soaked with sweat,

chasing the kids aroundtrying to keep them fromjumping in the ocean, getting run over by a golfcart, playing Frisbee with aRenoir or lling their sippycup with holy water.Ceremony, withoutkids: If its a couple thatyou really like, you watchwith a sincere smile andmisty eyes as they makethe ultimate commitmentto each other. If itsyour wifes old collegeroommate that youve onlymet twice and couldnt careless about, you continueto enjoy the cleavery whilesilently critiquing thecouples choice of priest, hairstyles, psalm, dress, and, most likely, spouse.Ceremony, with kids:Silently play with trains.Say shhh 1,225 times.Apologize to everyonearound you every 30seconds.Try not to laughtoo much when, as thegroom is about to place thering on the brides nger, your kid very loudly asksyou what smells like fart?Pre-meal, without kids:Begin drinking. Catch

up with old friends andmake new ones. Continuedrinking.Pre-meal, with kids:Watch as your starvingchildren rapidly descendinto utter madness as

the hours roll by with nodinner in sight. Quicklygive in and feed themwhatever is available, usually a healthycombination of popcorn, jellybeans, cola, 12-year-old

crackers from your wifespurse, prosciutto and dirt.Clean up vomit. The meal, without kids:Gorge yourself on wine

One easy step to ruining awedding

diagnosis he could still see just ne, and he took advantageof that ability by getting a sports car and driving it as fastas he could. He would race all the way fromVancouver toPenticton on the Crowsnest Highway a stomach-churningstretch of road full of switchbacks and sheer cliffs trying tobeat his record time.

Cowie counts himself lucky that he didnt kill himself. Hecared little about his own welfare, and acted as if others feltthe same way.

You forget about your parents and brothers and sisters. They might be a little bit concerned if I drive off a cliff on theway to Penticton at 100 miles an hour. You dont think aboutthat kind of stuff when youre that age.

The years passed and the lights stayed on, althoughdimming a little each year. Cowie matured and learned moreabout his situation.

And then there was somebody else, he says.WifeMarlene came along, followed by sons Sean andAaron.Thedrinking, the partying, the death races stopped. As his visionslowly failed, the rest of his life ourished.

Meanwhile Cowies condition took away the ne detailsin the centre of his vision, leaving behind a big blurry middlewith sharp peripherals.

When I meet people they dont even know that I havea vision problem, he says. I dont walk into things, ingeneral.

Cowie has learned to manage social situations despitenot having an ability to see faces. He relies upon clothingto keep up with swirling crowds. If someone at a party iswearing blue pants and a white shirt, that combination will,in essence, become that persons face.

For the rest of that time, Ill recognize the blue shirt andwhite pants, he says. But if I saw that person half an hourlater with a red shirt and black pants, I would not recognizethem.

The former devoted athlete he gave it all up duringthe troubled years got back into tness, eventually joiningCanadas national paracycling team and riding all the wayto the Paralympic Games. Cowie competed in 2000, 2004and 2008, winning a bronze medal in Sydney. After Beijinghe was hit with hometown fever the 2010Winter Gameswere coming toVancouver.Maybe he could make theParalympic cross-country ski team and compete on homesoil.

Cowie signed up for a training camp aimed at nding skistars for the 2010 Paralympics. You can perhaps guess whichone-legged tness freak he met there.

In the month after his accident Meyrick Jones experiencedthe disconcerting phenomenon known as phantom pain, sensations that seemed to originate in the limb that wasno longer there. Hed wake up from nightmares of ridinga motorcycle with his leg pressed against the searing hottailpipe.

It felt like somebody had a blowtorch or was stabbing mewith a knife, he says. It just felt horrible all the time. Liketorture. I tried everything. I tried hypnosis, I tried all sorts ofpain killers, acupuncture. None of it worked.

When the phantom pain became unbearable Jones wouldstart punching himself in the leg above the amputation untilthe sensation moved to a spot on his body that actually stillexisted. Soon, though, he was tted with his rst prostheticleg, and the pain stopped. It never returned.

Back inVancouver Jones threw himself into rehabimmediately upon receiving his new leg. He nished hisdegree, got a job renovating homes, got bored of his jobrenovating homes and then got sick.

I started having some health problems fromcompensating all the time, he says. Its a common thing foramputees.

The solution to both the boredom and the healthproblems was the same: tness. Jones upped his exercise

game and started racing mountain bikes. Soon enough hewas so t he was racing triathlons and landed a job as apersonal trainer atWestVancouvers Innovative Fitness.Atabout the same time, Jones had the crazy idea that he shouldtry out for the 2010 Paralympics that would be held on hisown doorstep. He did well, racking up a couple of cross-country skiing national championship medals, but didntquite make the cut. He did, however, meet an older guy afterhis own heart.

One year later Jones was contemplating riding the annual

Anyone caught damagingtrees on public propertyin the District of NorthVancouver could face a$500 ne under the treeprotection bylaw.

Thats a reminder fromdistrict parks staff, whorecently received a troublingreport from a Deep Coveresident who witnessed a trioof people harvesting bagfulsof tree fungi.

Linda Del Rosario saysshe was walking her dogin Cove Forest last monthwhen she crossed pathswith a man carrying a heavybundle on his shoulder.Anunusual sight on the localtrails, she says she followedhim until he approached anearby tree.

I saw him take a hatchetwith these two other womenand start hacking away atone of the pieces of fungi,Del Rosario says.

At that point, she noticedhis sack was full of themushroom-like material, shesays.

I was just so appalledthat someone was in the

forest harvesting in a publicpark and especially thesethings that I walk by andadmire on a daily basispractically.

Del Rosario snappedsome photos with her phoneand sent the evidence to thedistrict.

According to districtstaff, the substances inquestion are known asconks also called shelffungi or bracket fungi and are found growingon tree trunks and limbs, stumps, fallen logs, andeven on structural lumber.Shelf fungi are recyclers inforest ecosystems. In theprocess of decomposingwoody material, they recyclenutrients, build soil andcreate habitats for birds, mammals and insects.Mostconks are inedible becausethey are tough and corkyor woody, but some arecollected for their medicinalvalue or for smokingmixtures, while others arecollected for decorative andartistic uses.

Susan Rogers, sectionmanager of district parksplanning, construction and

environmental services, says she cant be sure ofthe intended use in thissituation, but suspectsthere may be a commercialapplication.

Because why else wouldyou be harvesting bags full ofit? she says.

Of particular concernis the fact the conks werelopped off with a hatchet, causing damage to the barklayer of the trees.

Rogers says she hasheard rumours of thisactivity, but it has only nowbeen conrmed. She saysthe district is looking intosolutions and is contactingother municipal parksdepartments to see if fungiharvesting on public land isan issue elsewhere.

It could be the tip of theiceberg, or it could just be anisolated event, Rogers says.

In the short-term, thedistrict plans to installeducational signs in affectedparks.Anyone who witnessespeople removing fungalconks should call districtbylaw enforcement at 604-990-2400 and an ofcer willbe dispatched. Our bylawsare there for good reasonand theyre really there totry and protect our parklandfor us and also futuregenerations, Rogers says.

British Columbianswedged in thebureaucratic quagmirebetween governmentministries may have achampion in the Districtof NorthVancouver.

District council votedunanimously Mondayto support a new socialpolicy framework designedto bring about greaterco-ordination betweenprovincial ministries andcommunity agencies.

We are reminded againand again often by thevery civil servants whowork with them of thejurisdictional silos that existin the provincial and federalgovernments, said BillMcMichael, vice-presidentof Pacic CommunityResources Society, a non-prot that works to identifysocial service gaps.

In his presentation tocouncil, McMichael saidhe wanted ministries to

implement an ethic ofcare that we think they stillpossess, though its wellhidden.

    Council unanimouslysupported the proposal.

The district has nowaligned itself with a growingchorus slated to call forPremier Christy Clark toshift policy directions tobetter meet social needs inB.C.

The City ofVancouver, the Surrey Board ofTradeand the Association ofVancouver Island andCoastal Communities willalso back the resolution, scheduled to be putforward at the Union ofB.C. Municipalities annualconvention coming up inWhistler this September.

Community agenciesare facing increasinglycomplex social challenges, according to a reportwritten by Mayor RichardWalton.

The system is sobalkanized, its broken, said McMichael.

The problem is notrestricted to social agencies, according to Coun. AlanNixon, who said dealingwith the provincial orfederal government canleave Canadians in amorass of entangledbureaucracies.

Put forth bythe Roundtable ofProvincial Social ServiceOrganizations in 2013, theframework is similar toan approach adopted byAlberta in February 2013.

Coun. Doug MacKay-Dunn did not attend themeeting.

Mutual fund costs can lower returnsDo you know howmuchyour mutual fund iscosting you?

The costs of activelymanaged funds are higherthan most investors realize, says an article in therespected newsmagazineThe Economist.

Everyone knows thatif you go to a casino, theodds are rigged in favour ofthe house. But people stilldream of making a killing.

The same psychologyseems to apply to fundmanagement, where

investors ock to high-costmutual funds even though

the odds are against them.Example: Invest $3,000

every six months in twofunds. One fund producesan average annual return ofseven per cent comparedwith the other funds six-per-cent net return becauseof a variety of extra costs. At the end of 30 years, youwould have $589,551 inthe cheaper fund comparedwith only $489,159 in themore expensive fund.

Interestingly, that 20-per-cent difference is thesame gure calculated

by Bill Sharpe, a Nobellaureate in economics, when he compared theeffects of investmentmanagement fees on aninvestors standard of livingin retirement.

Top fund managers orthe best asset allocationcould certainly outperformpassive funds invested in thestock index but almostnobody can consistentlychoose those out-performing funds.

The Economist cites thevarious costs that eat into

the investors net return:n Investment managementfees you have to pay thehigher costs of an activelymanaged fund, comparedwith a passive index-linkedfund.nTrading costs activemanagement means buyingand selling securities.n The cost of holding cashwhile waiting for buyingopportunities index-linked funds are usuallyfully invested.n Sales costs althoughfront-end loads are lesscommon these days, theadvisor or broker stillcollects a fee in one form oranother.n Tax costs you must

pay the tax on capital gainsrealized each year ratherthan allowing the full gainsto compound over the longterm.

Add these coststogether and the net returnto investors may be reducedby 2.66 percentage pointsa year a huge differentialconsidering long-term realreturns from equities havebeen 6.45 per cent, saidThe Economist.
