The Rum Runner in Retford is now the owner of what Jon Noyes the landlord describes as the eighth wonder of the world, a pair

of artisan built gates unlike any you will fi nd anywhere else in the UK.

They are the result of 7 months work by local artist/designer Kenny Roach. They could have been constructed sooner but Kenny was constantly distracted in a very pleasant way by passers by with an inquisitive nature into what was being erected at the entrance to the Rum runner courtyard.

The gates were mainly constructed at Kenny’s workshop in nearby Gamston, but a lot of welding & fabrication was done on site. They are constructed from a mix of bought & donated tools from the people of Retford. They were originally an idea of Kenny’s as the existing gates were in poor condition & prevented passers by from seeing the courtyard & the gallery Kenny has adjoining the Rum Runner courtyard. So there followed months of talks with Batemans, the pub owners, to assist with some fi nancing of the project which they fi nally did. Kenny then had free rein to turn his vision into reality.

Kenny Roach is originally from South Shields & a non-drinker...perhaps this is why he can create such pieces of individual art or sculpture or whatever you class the gates as.

To Quote Kenny ‘’The nature of my business is to passionately create a unique piece that will last a lifetime & more…’’

The gates have also inspired Rum Runner

local & poet to write the following:

The turf man’s clutter designed to ease the strain. The cobbler’s indenter to relive the pain. The G-clamp, spanner, brace and bit.Bacon’s cleaver, the welder’s kit.

A place where souls are soldered together.Lives forever in twisted fate.Sharing the future of whatsoever.Proudly witnessed by Galleries’ Gate.

The gates were offi cially opened on the 25th of August this year by the lady mayoress of Retford. There then followed an afternoon of live music beer & food.

If ever you visit Retford I recommend you have a look at the gates and peruse Kenny’s gallery whilst having an excellent pint from the Rum Runner.

The Rum Runner is situated on Wharf road opposite Asda just off the town centre, details of which can be found on What pub.

The Pheasantry Brewery at East Markham has won a Gold Award from the The Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) for the

Best Bitter Beer in the East Midlands. A panel of Judges met at Derby City Charter Beer Festival on 9th July to judge the Bitter style category, and selected the Pheasantry Brewery’s Best Bitter as the overall winner.

Mark Easterbrook of Pheasantry Brewery said “This is fantastic news! We are delighted that Pheasantry Best Bitter has been recognised as the very best bitter in the East Midlands. Best Bitter was one of our fi rst brews, it’s a great

tasting, good honest pint which the whole team

are really proud of.”The Pheasantry’s

Best Bitter is a smooth tasting copper coloured beer, with medium bitterness and low to medium

sweetness. It has a light spicy aroma and

3.8% ABV.

The Silver Award went to the Nottingham Brewery’s Rock Ale Bitter, and the Bronze to Thornbridge Brewery’s Wild Swan Bitter.

The Pheasantry Brewery and Restaurant opened in June 2012 on the Easterbrook’s farm in East Markham, on the A57 just minutes from the A1.

On Wednesday 13th August, North Notts branch made a belated presentation to the Mallard in Worksop as the winner of

the area’s Spring Pub of the Season.Chairman Steve Bownes presented the

award to landlady Mel Cadman and bar staff Carol Wade.

Steve said it was a much deserved award for the Mallard and it is always a pleasant, friendly pub to go into - there is always someone in that you know. He also said that the award was long overdue.

In reply Mel said that she was proud to accept the award on behalf of herself and husband Wayne and all their staff. She said it was all down to the dedication of all who work at the Mallard.

The event was well attended by CAMRA members. A press release was also sent to the Worksop Guardian.

The real ale scene in Retford could be better and with the promise of the Springhead pub the Ginger Pig (on the Anchor

We’re ploughing on with lots of new and exciting projects here at Welbeck.

We have just extended the cold store here at the brewery so that we can make sure we keep sending out our wide range of top quality beers to your local pubs. We’ve made the most of the ground fl oor extension by turning the new space upstairs into a rather nice ‘industrial’ bar area. This means there is a permanent cosy bar area in which we are now able to host parties and brewery tours.

It’s still a couple of months away but you’re probably planning your Christmas activities already, and let’s be honest, you’ll probably need some real ale over the festive season! We are able to sell you bottled beer and casks in either 36 pint disposable polypins, or 72 pint casks. Please contact Claire for details of brewery tours and beer sales on 01909 512539 or [email protected].

The last and probably one of the most exciting projects is a Pop-up pub at Cuckney House. This beautiful early 18th Century, Grade II listed country house is currently unoccupied, however we’ve been granted permission to use a few of the spectacular rooms for a pub during the six weeks that the village pub is closed for refurbishment. This will be open on Thursdays to Saturdays between 9th October and 15th November. The profi t from this venture will be going to the local Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance charity. More details will be coming soon and we hope you are very much looking forward to it.

That’s all for now, we’ve got to get brewing!

This trip was the direct result of a work colleague of my wife bringing me six Belgian beers back from a visit to her

brother in Bruges. Which coincided with one of Pete Browns books [Three sheets to the wind ] I was reading, which led me to his website & blog where he mentions a beer shop in Oostakker on the outskirts of Ghent, quote:

’Geerts Drankenhandel in Oostakker on the outskirts of Ghent is the best beer retailer I’ve ever visited. €1 for Saison Dupont? €10 for Deus 750ml? €1.25 for Rochefort 10? I should coco. €318 euros later the car boot was so full the axle was groaning.’

So the seed was set Next, book the Euro tunnel & accommodation in Brussels & Bruges - as my wife had not been to Brussels it was added to the itinerary. We stayed at a hotel on the outskirts of Brussels & caught the train in as I didn’t fancy driving in the city. But fi rst on the agenda after arriving in France was the drive up to Ghent to visit Geerts beer shop. We managed to fi nd the shop fairly easily and it has ample parking. I had already prepared a list following a bit of internet research. The staff were very helpful locating a particular beer if I couldn’t fi nd

it, I bought 74 bottles, 23 different brands which averaged at euro 1.38 per bottle. A good mixed selection of Abbey, Trappist & Wheat.

Once the boot was loaded it was onto Brussels. The train from near the hotel into Brussels Central was only 8 euros return for the two of us, certainly not worth the hassle of driving into the city.

The highlight of the visit to Brussels was fi nding & having a drink in Delirium Tremens, in the Guinness book of records for having over 2,000 beers available.

It is well worth a visit, though it was extremely busy, a pint of Delirium Stout was 6 euro.

Bottles about 3.80 euro average. After visiting a couple more bars we had something to eat then it was time to catch the train back to the hotel where we sampled some more Belgian beer, as I had been sampling Trappist & Abbey beers in Brussels I decided to try a Lambic beer which is quite unique in its brewing process where the beer is fermented using natural air

borne yeast, an acquired taste, a combination of a very acetic Cider & Lager with its own unique aroma.

Next morning we started the return journey via a night in Bruges - the B&B took a bit of fi nding but once there the owner sorted us out with some maps he had prepared, highlighting some places to visit along with some restaurants away from the

tourist traps & a couple of bars of particular interest. One of which, The Café Vlissinghe, was a couple of minutes walk from the B&B and has been in continual use selling beer since 1515. with a menu of about 30 beers.

Another bar worth a mention is ‘t Brugs Beertje with a menu of 300+ beers, very welcoming great atmosphere, excellent beers. 4p.m. Opening, About 3.60 euro a bottle.

If you have never been to Bruges or Brussels I would highly recommend it, very pleasant to look at & the beers not bad either.

From leaving the B&B to arriving back in Retford took just over 6 hours, very do-able in a weekend.

Two real ale enthusiasts from Newark are behind a new venture, bringing an exciting and ever-changing range of beers from

microbreweries to a new pub in Retford, and hopefully, in the future to more towns in the East Midlands and Lincolnshire.

Phil Ayling, a partner in the Just Beer Micropub in Newark, and David Moore, outgoing Chairman of Newark CAMRA, have joined forces to form a new company BeerHeadZ, dedicated to the promotion and consumption of quality real ales in comfortable surroundings.

Phil told me – “I’ve been looking at setting up a venture like this for the past 18 months or so but hadn’t found a suitable location. David and I got talking over a beer and he said he’d be interested in joining me. Since then David’s done a lot of the legwork, particularly in fi nding suitable premises. “

Both partners bring relevant skills to the new business – Phil’s pedigree in sourcing obscure beers, new brews and one-offs for Just Beer is almost legendary, and David has a strong background in retail and hospitality.

The new pub is called “BeerHeadZ” and is situated at 3, Town Hall Yard, Retford. Phil and David expect it to be open in the third week of October. Phil explained: “The pub will be a mix of old and new, with a modern bar and a touch of tradition. The cellar at the rear will be visible via a window. There’ll be eight handpulls to allow for fl exibility but we’ll probably start with four beers during the week and more at weekends. We’re offering free wi-fi and there’ll probably be a dartboard. “

David told me about the range of drinks on offer: “While the focus is obviously on real ale and cider we’ll stock a limited range of quality bottled beers that you probably won’t see elsewhere and some good wine. There’ll be a

range of soft drinks too and coffee served in cafetieres. There’ll be no craft, keg or smooth, no spirits or TV!”

The partners are keen not to brand the outlet as a “micropub”. They feel the title is a bit restraining and want to put a slightly different twist on things. “It’s an organic venture” Phil told me, “It’s not set in stone from day one – it’ll develop over time and we’ll be taking advice from our local customers and, of course, the local CAMRA Branch. We’ll obviously be advocating CAMRA values and the good news is we’ll be serving in oversized glasses so customers will always get a full pint”.

The fi rst staff member is Graeme Carson, a Newark resident, who has known Phil and David for some time. He is very enthusiastic about real ale and his new role. He will be doing the lion’s share of the shifts but David and Phil, will be on hand in the early stages and will probably recruit another person locally.

Opening hours are still to be decided but it’ll be 7 days a week and will be from lunchtime through to close. The BeerHeadZ web site can be seen at www.beerheadz.biz
