CHRIS BRUBECK, JOHN SALMON ANDTHE FRENCH CONNECTIONIn 2013, Grammy-nominated composer Chris Brubeck was asked by the Orchestre Symphonique de Bretagne to co-write an orchestral piece commemorating the 70th anniversary of D-Day. Chris’s co-composer is the wonderfully talented saxophonist and composer, Guillaume Saint-James, whose music has been described as “Ellingtonian and visual.” The two men had performed together in Rennes, France in 2013 and eagerly went about writing “Brothers in Arts: 70 Years of Liberty,” which featured a jazz combo in front of the orchestra made up of Chris on trombone, Guillaume on saxophones, and his outstanding French musician friends. Brothers premiered in France in June of 2014 as part of that country’s celebrations of the anniversary of D-Day. It went on to be performed in Florida and in

California in November 2014 and in Fayetteville, NC as part of the Fayetteville Symphony’s Memorial Day celebration, May 24, 2015.Chris is excited to be bringing his French friends to Greensboro: Guillaume Saint-James on saxophone, Jerome Seguin on bass and Thierry Arpino on drums. They will be joined by Chris’s long-time friend, John Salmon on piano. Together this combo will be playing some Brubeck classics, as well as some excerpts from Brothers in Arts. TICKETS STARTING AT $25 *Thank you to UNCG for use of the Recital Hall.

SUNDAY, JULY 26 / 6 PM / DANA LAWN

EMF FRINGE SERIES AND MUSEP PRESENT:

THE MELDAVIANS“Hailing from the distant planet Teronus, the Meldavians bring an interplanetary aural experience to their shows. Led by piano wizard Dave Fox (“Dr. Dave”), this five-piece ensemble performs surprisingly Earth-friendly music, ranging from hard-driving rock in odd meters to beautiful ballads to quirky, jazzy improvisations. Besides being a master of guitar loops, Melissa Reaves will make the Janis Jopin fans in the audience believe in a second coming. Scott Sawyer takes the music to other worlds with his tight, well-crafted guitar leads, and the solid-rocket boosted rhythm section of Roger Kohrs and Ian Pasquini pull it all together. A Meldavians show is a journey through the space-time continuum.”

This camp caters to a young child’s natural curiosity and desire to learn. EMF explorers will have constant interaction with EMF faculty and students. Each day, campers will explore and discover music through a variety of activities including instrument demonstrations, rehearsal visits, singing, and receiving an introduction to melody, harmony, and rhythm. All children are welcome to register, and acceptance is not based on musical experience. The week culminates with attendance at an EMF orchestral performance.

FOR CHILDREN WITH AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER This exciting camp is designed for rising 1st-5th graders with Autism Spectrum Disorder who function independently in a group setting with other children with ASD and are interested in music. EMF discovery participants receive a top-notch introduction to classical music and the orchestra through hands-on learning. Experienced music and special needs resource teachers provide a kid-friendly and creative approach to music through instrument demonstrations, making and playing instruments, singing, and a unique introduction to melody, harmony, and rhythm. 2015 EMF String Scholars

EMF ENCIRCLING THE CITYWITH THE GREENSBORO PUBLIC LIBRARY:

LEARNING WITH MUSIC Developed by Diane Phoenix-Neal, DMA, EMF Faculty and Former Board Member

EMF Encircling the City, now in its fifth year, is an educational performance and service-learning project designed in collaboration with the Greensboro Public Library for EMF’s 50th anniversary in 2011. EMF String Scholar Quartets travel to branches of the Greensboro Public Library to offer a short program of major works from classical literature highlighting living composers. Hailed as a successful program by the Library and the families they serve, EMF’s String Scholars have the expertise to engage children and invite their imagination and desire to learn-a shared mission with the Public Library’s Summer Reading Program.
