Holden is cutting recommended

retail prices of the VF Commodore

range by between $5000 to $9800.

Its lowest cost model, the Commodore

Evoke, has a price tag of $34,990.

It carries a high range of standard

equipment that includes Auto Park Assist;

front and rear parking sensors; rear view

camera; an eight-inch, high-resolution

color touch screen; MyLink app-embedded

technology including voice recognition

and Siri Eyes Free integration; and full iPod

integration and built-in apps, including

Pandora and Stitcher SmartRadio.

Holden Calais has had its recommended

retail slashed by over $8000 to just $39,990.

The Calais also has Blind Spot Alert and

Reverse Traffic Alert; keyless entry and push

button start.

The flagship Holden Calais V has had the

largest price cut of them all, dropping by

$9800 to just $46,990.

It offers astonishing value for money,

with Forward Collision Alert; Lane

Departure Warning; heated front seats; and

eight-way adjustable driver seat.

Then there’s the convenience of satellite

navigation with full color mapping, live

traffic updates and traffic management

control.

Calais V has a Bose premium audio system

and the sedan is fitted with a sunroof.

Holden Commodore’s sporty range also

offers excellent value - the SV6 will sell for

$35,990, down $6800.

Commodore SS has had an even larger

price drop, down to $41,990, a reduction of

$5800.

The SV6 is powered by the 3.6-litre SIDI

V6, while the SS uses the latest iteration of

the 6.0-litre Gen IV V8 engine.

Both are standard with a six-speed

manual transmission.

Mitsubishi Mirage reappears in market

Nissan Pulsar hatch bargain pricedIn years gone by it

was common to sell

hatchbacks for lower

prices than their sedan

brothers.

That was in an effort to

lift the image of sedans by

marketing them as larger

vehicles with a conservative air.

Later, life became simpler

and hatches and sedans had

identical numbers on the

recommended retail price lists.

Nissan has harked back

to the past by calling its new

small vehicle the Pulsar rather

than using the previous name

of Tiida, so has also decided

to go back to the past by

giving its soon to be launched

hatchback lower prices than

the sedans.

Pulsar four-door sedans have

been on sale since January at a

pretty reasonable $19,990.

The five-door hatch which

goes on sale Australia wide on

June 11 has a starting price of

just $18,990.

Note that on-road costs

have to be added to this price,

as well as to others in this news

story.

There’s no doubt that Nissan

Australia wants to play with the

big boys at the sharp end of

the Australian sales race.

Toyota is in an unassailable

number one spot, but Holden,

Mazda and Hyundai are all

fighting over second place and

the guys at Nissan are keen to

be part of that action.

Slashing prices is always a

great way to grab attention of

potential buyers.

The 140kW Pulsar SSS hasn’t

been left wanting in the low-

price strategy, carrying a tag of

just $29,240.

With a 1.6-litre turbocharged

direct-injection petrol engine,

the Pulsar SSS offers a lot of

performance at a budget price.

Interestingly, Nissan

Australia is also offering a

lower cost high-performance

variant, the $24,990 Pulsar

Hatch ST-S, that’s powered by

the same 140 kW engine as the

Triple S, but has a lower level of

standard equipment.

The standard models in the

Pulsar hatch range use the

same 96 kW 1.8-litre four-

cylinder petrol engine fitted to

the Pulsar sedan.

A six-speed manual

transmission is sold in all

models, Nissan’s X-Tronic

CVT (Constantly Variable

Transmission) is optionally

available on all, even the SSS.

The lowest cost model in

the new Pulsar hatch range,

the ST, comes with 16-inch

alloy wheels; cloth trim; cruise

control; four-speaker audio

with MP3 capability and

Aux-in; Bluetooth hands-free

telephone; steering wheel-

mounted audio controls; and

central locking with remote

keyless entry.

To these features the

Pulsar hatch ST-L adds front

foglights; a rear roof spoiler;

six-speaker audio with MP3

capability and USB and iPod

connectivity; 4.3-inch QVGA

color display; leather-accented

steering wheel; premium

cloth seat trim; and rear centre

armrest.

Pulsar hatch ST-S has not

only the 1.6-litre turbocharged

petrol engine, but also 17-inch

alloy wheels.

Topping out the hatch

range the Pulsar Hatch SSS

gets a front spoiler; side skirts;

rear lower spoiler; leather-

accented seat trim; xenon

headlights with automatic

levelling and a dusk-sensing

function; a 5.8-inch integrated

color display with touch

screen and steering wheel-

mounted controls; satellite

navigation with 3D mapping;

the six-speaker audio has

Bluetooth audio streaming;

a rear-view camera with

distance guidelines; dual-zone

climate control; intelligent

keyless entry; and push-

NEW PULSAR SSS HATCH: It looks the part with its

sporting body kit.

MITSUBISHI MIRAGE: Big headlights and a curvaceous bonnet give the new model a cheeky look.

Mitsubishi Mirage

was a major

player in the

small car scene in Australia

during the 1970s and into

the ‘80s.

Mirage faded from

the local scene when the

local branch of the giant

Japanese company got into

financial strife and closed

its factories, but has now

reappeared.

The new Mirage has

a price list beginning at

a very low $12,990, plus

on-roads, and takes on the

established Suzuki Alto,

Nissan Micra and Holden

Barina in the cheap and

cheerful class.

Mirage has a modern

youthful face with its

wide-eyed headlamps and

curvaceous bonnet.

The sixth generation

Mitsubishi Mirage comes

from Thailand and is

sold in Australia in three

specification levels: Mirage

ES, ES Sport and LS.

All variants come with CD

player, two speakers, USB

and AUX input.

The LS has two additional

speakers plus climate

control airconditioning.

There’s the convenience

of automatic headlamps,

rain-sensing wipers and

keyless operation with

push-button engine

starting.

Interior styling of the

Mirage LS that we have

been testing over the past

week features a glossy

piano black centre panel

adding a premium quality.

Silver accents enhance

the gearshift panel, gear

knob and airconditioning

vents along with chrome

door handles, while seats

are clothed in a soft, waffle-

weave fabric in black and

purple.

For a small car, 3710 mm

long, 1665 mm wide and

1500 mm tall, headroom

and rear legroom are

impressive.

A tight turning circle

of 9.2 metres makes the

Mirage nicely manoeuvrable

in squeezy parking spots.

All-round driver visibility

is excellent thanks to a low

belt-line.

Our Mirage swallowed

a week’s grocery shopping

with ease, and with the

rear seatback folded, three

20 kilogram bags of chook

food.

The 1.2-litre three-

cylinder engine uses a

variable valve timing system

that matches intake valve

timing to engine speed and

load to squeeze out 57 kW

of power at 6000 rpm and

maximum torque of 100 Nm

at 4000 revs.

The willing little

powerplant is mated

to either a five-speed

manual or an efficient CVT

automatic.

The CVT in our test

vehicle had the three-

cylinder engine sounding a

bit rough around the edges.

You can choose to find

that irritating, or call it

character.

We plumped for the

latter and really enjoyed

the sound and feel of this

cheerful little machine.

On the road the Mirage

has a similarly happy

feeling, refinement is pretty

good, all the more so when

you take into account the

very low price.

Handling is safe and

secure though not what you

call sporting.

At the highest speeds

likely to be attempted by

most owners there’s plenty

in reserve, with understeer

that comes in as the limit

approaches to scrub speed

off.

Ride is good on all but

the roughest of roads,

where the Mirage tends to

get bumped about a fair bit.

As a suburban car it’s

more than adequate,

though we wouldn’t really

suggest it for prolonged

country trips.

Typical fuel

consumption will be in

the five to six litres per

hundred kilometre range

in country driving, and

seven to nine litres in

tough commuting.

A five-star safety rating

for the Mirage has been

achieved thanks to the use

of Mitsubishi’s RISE body

design which provides an

impact-absorbing front end

in addition to a rigid cabin

structure with extensive

use of high-tensile steel.

Standard equipment

includes six airbags (driver

and front passenger, side

and curtain), ABS anti-skid

braking with Electronic

Brake force Distribution

and Active Stability Control

which works to maintain

stability and prevent loss of

control while cornering.

The front seats with

adjustable head rests have

been designed to reduce

whiplash injury in a rear-end

crash.
