So what could voting Lib Dem mean for you? With Ian Lindley you would have an approachable MP with real life and work experience. Ian wants to talk to you face-to-face and is available to give you help and support and as your MP he would be able to do much more. Ian would have a mobile unit so you don't have to search out your MP. It would visit your neighbourhood frequently. Tackling anti-social behaviour, noisy neighbours, more investment in youth clubs and more sports facilities to get children off the streets, improving our estates - these are the sorts of things that local people are telling Ian and his team that they want to see. They want to see their Council Tax money being used wisely to provide real help to local communities. Most of all people want honesty. They are fed up with sleaze and spin. Many of you have spoken to Ian, so you know that he will talk openly and genuinely wants to help. His ability and determination to deliver investment and beat anti-social behaviour is proven. Labour has let downthe people of Britain and of North

Durham. They have failed to makethe country fairer, failed on theeconomy, failed on the environmentand failed to clean up politics. GordonBrown’s legacy after 13 years at theheart of government is the worstrecession in decades, a failed politicalsystem and a society which is more, not less, unfair.Every economic decision of the last 13years has been Gordon Brown’s. Hestood by until the credit and housingbubbles were out of control. Hispolicies fuelled the excesses of thebanks. He has even made the taxsystem still more unfair! Labour hasbroken its promise to reform politics. They have done nothing to change theexpenses system, failed to reformparty funding or introduce fair votes.Government is now more bureaucraticand wasteful than ever. The Labour MP here is a minister inthis failed government. He voted forthe Iraq war. He voted for ID cardsand student top-up fees. As DefenceMinister, Labour’s Kevan Jones musttake responsibility when our bravetroops have been sent to fight inAfghanistan without enough basicequipment. He has made hugeexpenses claims and voted to keepMP’s expenses secret. Only the press

finally exposed this scandal.

A Fresh Start with the Lib Dems

Liberal Democrat Leader, Nick Clegg has set out the priorities for the Party’s election manifesto. There arefour priorities for how the Liberal Democrats will make Britain a fairer place: fair taxes; a fair start for everychild; fair, clean and politics; and a fair, green economy with jobs that last.

Priority 1 is to introduce fair taxes, with proposals for the biggest tax reform in generations. We will closeloopholes for the richest and introduce a tax on mansions. This will fund tax cuts of £700 for everyoneelse. Millions of low earners and pensioners will stop payingtaxes because no-one will pay income tax on their first£10,000 of earnings. Millions will stop paying taxesaltogether and millions more will get hundreds of poundsback in their pockets. Only the Liberal Democrats will maketaxes permanently fair.

Priority 2 is to give every child the fair start they deservethrough a transformation of our education system that will build the foundations of fair society. Thatmeans cutting class sizes so children get the individual attention they need to thrive. The LiberalDemocrats will be putting an extra £2.5 billion into schools to pay for more teachers, better discipline and

catch-up classes. This means an average of £2,500extra per pupil for the schools teaching the millionmost deprived children in the country. This long-terminvestment in their well-being will save a fortune lateron and will be funded by taking high earners out of thetax credit system and cutting wasteful ‘programmes’ atthe Department for Education. Lib Dems will also phase

out tuition fees so that everyone who gets the grades can go to university without fear of debt, no matterwhat their background.

Priority 3 is to make politics clean, fair and local. The Liberal Democrats are the only party committed toreal change of our political system. This means getting corruption and big money out of politicsaltogether, reducing the number of MPs, givingpower over the police and NHS to localcommunities, changing the voting system to abolishsafe seats and giving you the right to sack corruptMPs. These are changes that would really bringtrust back. Neither Labour nor the Conservatives willever offer change on this scale - they will defend thestatus quo ‘punch and judy’ politics to the end because they put themselves, not ordinary people, first .Only the Liberal Democrats offer the chance for a different politics. Another whitewash is unacceptable,we need permanent change to make politics clean, fair and local.

Priority 4 is to clean up banking. The Liberal Democrats will shift the economy away from reliance ongreed in the City of London and in financial services. Our plans will bring in a new era where growthhappens in every part of Britain in a way that promotes green technology and creates lasting jobs. We

will put an end to the casino banking that caused thefinancial crisis by breaking up the banks andencouraging local ways to bring competition back to thefinancial sector and make sure businesses can find themoney to grow. Under our plans, communities will regaincontrol of business rates, reconnecting local enterprisewith local politics; Local Enterprise Funds will help people

invest in growing businesses in their area. The Liberal Democrats will also create a new NationalInfrastructure Bank to bring in private money to build the transport links, energy grid and public buildings. These are all things that Labour has neglected. We will want to build a sustainable, low carbon economyin every part of Britain.

Fairness for all - the Liberal Democrat manifesto

Page 4: North Durham Focus Issue 2

Our aim is to deliver the clear set of policy priorities which will make the difference to our livesand which the other two parties have shown they can't or won't deliver. If you value real reform, fairer taxes, a fair start for every child, and a green, sustainable economy then vote with yourbeliefs. Vote for real change that only the Liberal Democrats can deliver.

Help us to make a fresh start this time

The Police should work the streets more, keeping them safe and secure Get our troops out of Afghanistan We need fairer taxes for people on lower incomes Control our country’s borders properly Our Council Tax money needs to be spent better We need a mixture of youth and experience to sortout this mess

Let’s stop boom and bust Our MP never seems to be here, we need an MP thatcares about the area, listens to what people aresaying and actually does something about it

There are loads more things the council and our MPcould do to help small businesses

We need more homes and better homes We could save millions just by using common sense -let’s bin Labour’s ‘political correctness’.

‘New Labour’ has shifted power away from localpeople

This country has lost is its pride and people don'tseem to care any more

Kids get bored, they get into trouble - giving themmore things to do will solve a lot of needless crime

Help small businesses and new start-ups to createmore jobs

The North East has great and talented people but alot aren’t being given a fair chance to get into work

Political parties need to be more forward thinkingand stop taking about the past
