The device, iAwake, an earpiece worn while driving, aims to prevent those behind the wheel from falling asleep on long journeys. An in-built sensor will sound-off to wake the driver when it detects the driver’s head drop or body slouch. In September of this year, a new company “Lyetech” was set up by the five boys, 2nd year students at Colaiste Choilm in Swords, in order to develop, produce and market the product both nation- ally and internationally. The young businessmen, Sean O’Brien, Aaron O’Neill, Shane Tully, Karl Reilly and Dermot O’Hanrahan, aged between just 13-14 years old, are being heralded by business insiders for their excep- tional business acumen and innovative new product. Each member of the group brings their own unique talents to the company. Karl handles Finance, Shane works on Production, Aaron is the Marketing man, Dermot is the Secretary in charge, and Sean commands the role of Managing Director. Speaking exclusively to the County Leader, Managing Director, Sean explains, “Lye” means “clean simple solutions” and our logo represents our own strengths and weaknesses.” The company was established on the back of an idea the group had from a car accident they had heard about. An incident involving a mother of a newborn child, who fell asleep at the wheel and overturned the vehicle into a ditch, had a strong impact on the boys. Sean advised, “Luckily they were both unhurt, but obviously it was not a nice experience. It got us thinking, if we could invent something to prevent that from happening, to save people’s lives, it could be a hit. And so far, it has been.” Road deaths resulting from a drivers falling asleep at the wheel account for 4,000 deaths annually across Europe. The boys are already developing the successor to the iAwake, the “iAwake 2.0”. This enhanced device will have bluetooth capabilities to link to your mobile handset to your earpiece for handsfree usage while driving. Both versions of the iAwake also have an in- built “double-click function” to allow users who need to bend their head or body, for example to pick something up they’ve dropped, to tap the earpiece twice before- hand, which will prevent the buzzer from sounding. The young businessmen are moving fast. Sean advised, “We did all our market research - field and desk. For our field research we went to Dublin airport and surveyed taxi drivers, bus and coach drivers, logistic companies, and all those people who were used to doing long journeys and could fall asleep at the wheel. We had an excellent response, 92 per cent said they would buy the earpiece.” I asked the boys where this entrepreneurial driving force in their life had come from, Karl replied, “Our business teacher Mr. Foster introduced us to the Student Enterprise Awards last year and we started developing products.” For a company set up in just September this year, the young students have made impressive inroads. They showcased their product at the Colaiste Choilm Open Night at the end of September, less than a month after their start up, to an incredible response. Karl said, “We already have 40 orders on the iAwake, and we didn’t even have the product design. People were so impressed with it.” The boys contacted the DCU School of Engineering to assist them with their product design, and spent over 12 hours at the college developing their unique prototype. The earpieces are currently in production in China, as Sean advises “manufacturing costs are cheaper over there”, and they hope to have their first prototype this Friday. LyeTech have set up a website www.lyetech.net to reach consumers in Ireland and internationally. The website has an online store and has also been linked up to Lyetech Facebook, Twitter and Youtube pages, to promote the product across multiple social media plat- forms. The boys are creating some revenue from selling advertising on their websites. Over the coming months, the students plan to meet with logistics companies, taxi companies and coach/bus drivers to market and sell their product. The aspiring businessmen have such an impressive schedule of meetings, it is difficult to see when they fit in time for school or homework, but they insist they are each pursuing “all honours subjects” for Junior Certificate. They credit their business teacher Mr Foster for his guidance as well as their parents for constant motivation and encouragment. The innovative young students have developed exten- sive skills in research and development, product design, marketing, sales, finance, and a great understanding of all the key elements of a successful business start-up. I asked the boys how they have managed to achieve so much in a matter of three short months, Sean remarked, “We feel all the hard work has really helped us, if we didn’t put in so much time, we wouldn’t be where we are today. But we believe it can’t be just only work. We take some time out to mess around and have a laugh, we are kids after all.” The budding entrepreneurs are gearing up for a successful pitch at the Junior Dragons’ Den National Finals on 9th December, to make it onto the live TV shows and a chance of earning a 2000 investment in their company. They are also taking part in the upcoming Student Enterprise Awards. I asked the group what did they think of their chances, Sean spoke candidly, “You have to believe you can make it, other- wise there’s no point in trying, and we do believe.” On hearing their extremely well-planned and well- presented sales pitch, I’ve no doubt that this is not the last we’ll hear of these five bright young sparks. Malahide resident, Heather Perrin, who has become the first member of the judi- ciary in the history of the State to be convicted of a serious crime, has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison. She was convicted of attempting to deceive an elderly friend and client out of half of his 1m estate. Her crime had been described as “one of the worst cases of client betrayal to come before the courts.” The former District Court judge (60) who was appointed to the bench in 2009, deceived her victim, octogenarian and close friend, Thomas Davis into bequeathing half his estate, worth about 1m, to her two children. This was while she practised as a solicitor, just weeks before she was appointed as a District Court judge. Perrin, of Lambay Court, Malahide, had pleaded not guilty to deceptively inducing Mr Davis to bequeath half of his estate to Sybil and Adam Perrin at her office on Fairview Strand on January 22, 2009. Prosecutor, Dominic McGinn said Perrin fought the case using “lies, half-truths and deceptions.” She was also criticised for putting 83 year old, Mr Davis through the rigours of a full trial. Perrin is a very well known resident of Malahide and acted as a former director of the Girls Brigade International Council, the Christian uniformed organisation. This is a particularly sad story about how a glittering legal career has been thrown away and the subsequent devastation for two families, who had been lifelong friends. She has been on long-term sick leave from the bench and has not yet served the minimum five-year period required, before she can draw down part of her pension. It is reported that her pension will be a mere 106 a week compared to the 2,845 she earned a week from her judi- cial appointment, because she served only three years in office. Perrin had been on long-term sick leave from the bench. The 60- year-old, who earned 147,961 a year as a District Court judge, is entitled to a modest pension of 3/80th of her salary for her three year’s service. It will be paid to her on reaching pensionable age. She is currently being held in the Dóchas Centre in Mountjoy Prison and, with remission, will be due for release in September 2014. Time in prison will be particularly hard for her, consid- ering her medical condition and the fact that she will share space with other pris- oners, some of whom may have been sent there by her. In her short spell as a District Court judge, Perrin largely worked in the Children’s Court. When the deception first came to light, she claimed it was a mistake by her secre- tary, but later claimed she had drafted the will in line with Mr Davis’s instructions. Her defence team suggested that Mr Davis suffered memory problems and had forgotten leaving half his estate to the Perrin children. But the pros- ecution produced medical evidence that Mr Davis had a good mental capacity and no memory problems. She was interviewed five times, giving apparently different versions of events each time. She claimed the Davises were old and couldn’t remember what their instructions were. She criticised Mr Davis’s nieces, claiming that he was unhappy with how they had squandered cash gifts - which the nieces later denied. She claimed that Noel O’Hanrahan, who took over her practice, was behind the allegations. She told gardai that Mr Davis had complained that he was a “bully” who wouldn’t stop contacting him. She revised the date on which they first discussed making her children bene- ficiaries of the will. Following the sentencing by the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, Minister for Justice, Alan Shatter said, “It is of the utmost importance that a client can trust a solicitor acting on his or her behalf to properly implement his or her instructions. Members of the legal profession are in a particular position of trust and to ensure confidence in the profession, all solicitors must honestly implement instructions received and at all times act in an appropriate manner. This obligation, of course, also attaches to any member of the legal profession who aspires to hold judicial office. The conviction and sentencing of Heather Perrin starkly illustrates the importance of the highest standards of honesty being observed. The victims in this case are to be greatly commended for their fortitude in seeing this difficult and distressing criminal prosecution through to conviction.” Mr Davis gave instruc- tions to leave 2,000 each to Perrin’s children and it is believed that Mr Davis still wants the Perrin children to be included in his will. Streetwise Warren wasacutely aware of this andproposed that the pairshould visit a photogra-pher, with the view tobooking him for theirnow, back on the road, wedding. “This should dothe trick,” he thoughtcunningly. He wascorrect, as this gesture

and show of dedicationbrought inner peace tothe lovely Chris, whograbbed Warren in aloving embrace, with nearfatal consequences. Theloved up couple madetheir way to the photo-graphic studio of TimRalph, who was delightedto accept such an attrac-

This week at the County Leader, we asked local residents

‘What are your thoughts onthe recent tragic case ofSavita Halappanavar?’Q:

Attila Piff, Hungary/Swords“A woman should be able to take responsibility for her own life. If thewomen’s groups join together they can achieve something. I’m not a

woman, I can just view the matter as an outsider. I would support abor-tion but maybe only under certain conditions, and women should be

aware of all possible outcomes of having an abortion.”

Avi Singh, India/Swords“I think they should bring in some legislation. I mean, this is the 21stcentury, they should have some law in case the mother’s life is in danger. There should be a preference for the mother's life rather than the baby's."

John Hennessy, Swords“Doctors were just acting within their guidelines but the pro-choice groupsare using her case as a scapegoat. It is being used to forward the abortion

debate, that’s my personal view. The doctors had their hands tied, theycouldn’t make any other decision. It is very hard to legislate for an extreme

case like that. You either bring in abortion or you don’t.”

Nora Heavey, Swords“I hope they sort it out. But I do think the hospital people do great work. Iam quite Catholic so I believe when your time is up, your time is up, it’sunfortunate. It is very important that people wait until the report comesout. I think abortion should be brought in where the woman’s life is at risk, but I think it should be the doctor’s decision, I don’t think the personshould be able to ask for it.”

Philip Harford, Swords“It’s a disgrace, she should have been allowed to have an abortion formedical conditions. If it was any other country they would have allowed it.They won’t bring in legislation, this country is backward. The baby was notgoing to survive either way, they could have saved one life. We are not aCatholic country, people are mixed raced in Ireland and have different reli-gions now.”

Collette Moore, Swords“It is very, very sad. The mother should have been saved. I think the lawshould be looked at and should be changed quickly. Personally I feelit’s a woman’s right to have a termination for her own personal reasons, and should have access to it then in Ireland, and not just in the casewhere the life of the mother is at risk.”

Sinead Davy, Galway“It is a disgrace. I think she was left in a situation were the pregnancy wasn’t

viable, the baby couldn’t have survived outside of herself. She asked for help anddidn’t get it. In a way, I feel sorry for the consultant, whoever he is, that made the

flippant remark that “it’s a Catholic country”, whether he was being a bit pedanticor he was saying it because his hands were tied. But he will regret it because it is

all over the international media.”

Luiza Alexa, Romania/Swords“I was very upset to hear Savita’s case. It makes you think as amother, what it would be like to be in her shoes. It’s a pity. Whenthe person said “it’s a Catholic country”, but then there was a lossof life, where is the Catholic religion? I think we should bring inlegislation where the life of the mother is at risk.”

John Pett, Swords“For any woman to be in a situation like that has got to be a horrendousexperience. It could be any woman, anyone in our families. How do you

balance the right to life by basically taking a life? The politicians needto bring a clarity to it. I totally agree with

access to abortion if the life of the woman is atrisk.”

Claire O’Sullivan, Skerries“I was upset when I heard it. They should have terminated thepregnancy. Two lives were lost instead of one. I think theyshould bring in legislation in extreme cases, when the life of themother is at risk or in cases of rape.”

I look for pattern, colour and texture withinlandscapes, and the artwork develops (sometimes itseems of its own accord!) from there. I’m also inter-ested in birdwatching, and birds feature in more figu-rative work. I work with a variety of media, includingacrylic, oil pastel, gouache and watercolour,” she said.

ten years. The volunteerethos and example theyset filters through thecompany encouraging flex-ibility and commitmentamong the staff to deliverthe maximum transportservices to passengers. The health and safety ofthe passenger is at theforefront of daily activitieswithin Nifti, and this is fullyencouraged by the fullboard. General Manager, EricBentley, is very positiveabout the effect that Niftihas had on the localcommunity in the past tenyears. “Addressing Ruralisolation is the purpose theRTP programme and ofNifti,” he said. “Transport is a vital part ofthe economy and it is theglue which binds activitiestogether.” People usetransport for everyday use,but if it’s non-existent, youcan’t get to where youneed to go. Facilitatingmovement is essential to avibrant economy, more sofor an economy attempting

to recover from recession. The young and the old canbe forgotten with anational emphasis on theworking commuter agegroup.” “A significant proportion ofour passengers are over65 Free Travel Passholders and under 21sspecial needs groups.”He added, “Nifti gets thelowest amount of RuralTransport Programme(RTP) funding in thecountry, yet we carry in themid ground of passengernumbers, so we really dopunch above our weight.”The current Nifti operation, which we have all workedhard to establish, deliversimpressive ‘bang for buck’,with excellent Return OnInvestment figures for theDepartment of Transportand in terms of our ‘costper trip’ comparison withnational and Internationalstandards’. He was also full of praisefor the Board of Directorsand the work they do. “Wehave eight directors, all

volunteers. They give up,on average, about threehours per month. Ourcurrent Chairman, DonalMangan is tireless andgives up on average a dayevery week for the benefitof Nifti. He’s an exManaging Director of BusEireann and ProjectManager for the imple-mentation of the DublinLuas, so he brings a wealthof knowledge and experi-ence to Nifti.” Donal is fullysupported in his positionby a diverse board ofDirectors. Eric is a native of Lusk, andwas previously aConsultant TransportPlanner working for aprivate and public sectorclients in Ireland andabroad. He has experience of localand national transportplanning projects, which isa very unique niche in thetransport business. Hesaid that, “Nifti is quiteunique in having a greatmix of people on our boardof directors. He went on toexplain the secret ofsuccess for Nifti. “We areall cogs in a wheel, who

respond to the communityrequirements. Our staff arevery willing workers, whoare not ‘clock watchers’and are prepared to go theextra mile to serve thecommunity. We’re all flex-ible, which comes from thevolunteer ethos exampleset by our directors. Theymonitor the direction ofthe company, controlfinances, health and safetyissues and maintain goodgovernance. Nifti are very pleased withsome of the comments ofsatisfied customers, whodescribed the service as “abrilliant door to doorservice, so safe and givespeace of mind. We wouldbe lost without the Niftibus.” Laurence Corcoranfrom Prosper Fingaldescribed Nifti as, “a vitalservice in rural areas forpeople with specialneeds/disabilities.”A recent development forNifti is the new service toBeaumont Hospital. Ericexplained how thiswonderful service works.“Passengers wishing totravel to BeaumontHospital can board the Bus

Eireann route 101 busservices from any of theusual bus stops andconnect with a Nifti bus atthe Swords bus stop, onthe old bypass at thePavilions Roundabout, which will bring themdirectly to BeaumontHospital. This includespeople coming fromBalbriggan and Balrotheryon the number 101 fromDrogheda, who can accessour bus to the hospital.” The new service leavesSwords twice daily, at9.25am. and 12.45pm. Areturn service leaves thehospital at 1.10pm. and4.20 pm, connecting withBus Eireann in Swords at1.35pm. and 4.55pm. Theservice was launched inJuly 2012 and currentlycarries approximately 14people per day, which is asuccess in rural transportterms. The Beaumont bus serviceis consistent with currentnational policy of integra-tion of transport serviceproviders and facilitatinghealth trips. “Many of our passengersactually set their hospitalappointments to fit in withour scheduled service tothe hospital. In 2013, wehope to extend the serviceand have our own buscoming from Skerries on

the R127, which currentlyhas no public transportservice whatsoever, toLusk,. This will thencomplete the rural circuit.Skerries is the Fingal pilotAge Friendly town, so itmakes sense to includethem in our plans,” hesaid. Nifti are members ofthe Fingal IntegratedTransport Working Groupwhich is chaired by FingalCounty Council. ‘We hopeto extend theBeaumont Bus serviceto Skerries and Luskin 2013 with the assis-tance of the otherworking groupmembers, Ericcommented. “Our main driver onthe Beaumont Hospitalservice, Mick McDonagh isa fully qualified first aiderand Emergency FirstResponder’. All Niftidrivers are highly trainedas per the Department ofTransport requirements, not only in professionalCPCs but also specialistminibus andpassenger/wheelchairhandling training, such asMIDAS, PATS and MEEP. Minister for Health, DrJames Reilly said, “Iwelcome the direct busservice to Beaumonthospital provided by Nifti. As a local TD for DublinNorth, I have receivedmany representations onthis issue from patientswho found the journey toBeaumont Hospital diffi-

cult, involving a trip intoDublin City and thenanother bus out toBeaumont Hospital.” “I congratulate BeaumontHospital Management andparticularly the positivestaff and management ofNifti who took up the chal-lenge to provide this verywelcome local bus servicefor the patients, visitorsand indeed staff ofBeaumont Hospital. North

Fingal Rural CommunityTransport Ltd have appliedfor Lotto Funding for thisvery welcome hospitaltransport service and myDepartment are currentlyassessing that applica-tion,” he said.Minister for Transport, LeoVaradkar said, “AsMinister for Transport,Tourism and Sport and alocal representative, Iwant to pay tribute to thework of North Fingal Rural

HOROSCOPES

AQUARIUS Jan 20 - Feb 18This is a week when it would be better to dosomething than suffer from uncertainty. Onceyou take action, all changes; as all the indica-tions are that before the week is out you’ll bewondering what all the worry was about.

PISCES Feb 19 - Mar 20In the process of satisfying others’ concerns, willyou resolve a few of your own. However straight-forward things seem, only after exciting devel-opments around Friday will the picture - andyour future - be clear.

ARIES Mar 21 - Apr 20The highlight is on business. Tiresome as this is,particularly during the week’s first half, you’llsoon be thankful for what you’ve learned. Infact, you’ll be calling on facts that, only recently, were boring numbers.

TAURUS Apr 21 - May 20However cautious you are, you’re still likely tobe blamed for whatever arises. While this ispartly unfair, defending yourself achieves little.Biding your time does, however, as, before long, truth will win out.

Gemini May 21 - Jun 20With a business or financial matter you’ll wantto study all the facts. But others are facing facts, too. Enough that, by next week, they’re likely tohave changed their restrictive attitudes for a farmore flexible approach.

Cancer Jun 21 - Jul 22In all matters this week, ask tough questionsand you should get the right answers. And if youdon’t, next Monday’s potent aspect to the planettruth, Pluto, should force any remaining vitalfacts out into the open.

Leo Jul 23 - Aug 23The accent this week is on life’s loves and plea-sures; and your bubbly attitude will spark theentusiasm of others, who then join you intoturning previously dull activities into somethingmore exciting and enjoyable.

Virgo Aug 24 - Sep 22You finally concentrate on what’s important. This, you’ll find, is easier than you expected. Somuch so, that you’ll be discussing ideas that, only a few days previously, simply wouldn’thave been possible.

Libra Sep 23 - Oct 22You worry about hurting others; if not causing arift. The irony is that discussion of issues engen-ders the reverse. Suddenly those you’d thoughtsimply wouldn’t listen are being both morecommunicative and more considerate.

Scorpio Oct 23 - Nov 22Your initial reaction to ideas or offers is unlikelyto be positive. However, reject nothing now.Ideally, you’ll make no decisions until nextMonday’s powerful planetary change, whenthings suddenly fall into place.

Sagittarius Nov 23 - Dec 21You begin to be more assertive in all aspects ofyour life. Your timings good, too, as others willbe delighted with your new clarity. You’re goingto be standing up for a lot: your ideas, for othersand, most of all, for yourself.

Capricorn Dec 22 - Jan 19In all matters recently you’ve been cautious -perhaps overly so. However, you now questionyour approach and develop a more inventiveoutlook, which introduces ideas as stimulatingas they could be disruptive. For more info: www.luskmotorgroup.ie

BalbrigganStudents Get TidyThe students of Ardgillan Community Collegerecently lended a much appreciated hand to thelocal Tidy Towns group in Balbriggan. The Principal of the school, Michael O’Leary, arranged for a party of about 20 students andsome parents to join up with Balbriggan TidyTowns at the Church Roundabout for work at11:00am on Saturday, 24th November last. The carefully chosen project was the planting of500 daffodil bulbs and six boxes of miscella-neous herbaceous plants. Conversation flowedwhile participants got to know each other betterand got the job done. The sun did not shine butat least the rain stayed away while work wascompleted by 12.30pm. Speaking to the County Leader, the principalwas delighted with the vast amount of workdone on the day and praised both groups fortheir efforts. “An extensive collection of greenmaterial estimated at 40 cherry trees , about 40cotoneaster shrubs and about 120 herbaceousplants are now held in reserve for winterplanting . In addition, we have purchased about1,500 daffodil bulbs so volunteers and locationsfor planting these are particularly welcome. Thiswas a small but significant step forward inachieving youth interest in the town environ-ment and also in the Tidy Towns,” he said.
