This is one of a set of 38 Health and Wellbeing Profiles for Scottish Community Health Partnerships (CHPs)*, published by the Scottish Public Health Observatory (ScotPHO) collaboration and updating profiles previously published in 2008. Additional profiles focusing on the health and wellbeing of children and young people in Scotland are also available. All profiles are available on the ScotPHO website at www.scotpho.org.uk/profiles. Our aim is to support health improvement in Scotland by providing clear and relevant information that will help service providers, planning teams, policy makers and the public make informed decisions to improve health. This profile contains:

• A map of the area and demography table • ‘At a glance’ commentary on the findings for the area • A spine chart detailing 59 indicators across 10 domains • Time trend and rank charts for eight key indicators • A table of definitions and sources for all indicators • Details of other Profiles 2010 products.

While there may be additional sources of information in some local areas, these indicators have the strength of being available in a consistent form for all of Scotland, allowing valid comparisons to be made. They should be interpreted in the light of local knowledge. *CHP is used as a global term to refer to all Community Health Partnerships (CHPs) / Community Health & Care Partnerships (CHCPs) / Community Health & Social Care Partnerships (CHSCPs or CHaSCPs) in Scotland. However, instead of including five CHPs for Glasgow City we have presented the results for three areas, covering Glasgow North East, Glasgow North West and Glasgow South. These 38 areas nest within 32 councils (local authorities) in Scotland. In most cases, the CHP and council area are coterminous, but Glasgow, Fife and Highland Council areas contain a number of CHPs. Population Profile

Life Expectancy & Mortality

Behaviours

Crime and Environment

North Ayrshire CHP has an estimated total population of 135,510. The percentage of the population who are of working age is below average. The percentage aged 0-15 years and the percentage aged 65 to 74 years are both above average. The live birth rate is below the national average. Migrant worker registrations are much less common than for Scotland as a whole.

Life expectancy, all-cause mortality (all ages) and mortality rates from coronary heart disease (under-75s) are all significantly worse than Scotland, but early deaths from cancer and cerebrovascular disease are not significantly different to Scotland.

An estimated 31.0% of adults smoke, compared to 25.0% in Scotland as a whole. There have been 390 alcohol deaths in the last five years, but the death rate is not significantly different to the Scotland average. The proportion of the population hospitalised for alcohol conditions is significantly worse than average. The proportion of the population hospitalised for drug related conditions is significantly worse than average, with 653 patients discharged from hospital over the last three years.

The CHP has an incidence of cancer not significantly different to Scotland. For patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma and for emergency admission patients, the proportions of the population hospitalised are significantly worse than average. The proportion of the population hospitalised for psychiatric conditions is higher than Scotland as a whole and prescribing rates for anxiety and depression are also higher.

In North Ayrshire, 5.4% of older people receive free personal care at home (Scotland 5.3%), while 35.7% of older people with intensive care needs are cared for at home rather than in care homes or geriatric long-stay hospital beds (Scotland 31.7%). Compared to Scotland, as a whole significantly more adults claim incapacity benefit or severe disability allowance and there are significantly more single adult dwellings.

North Ayrshire CHP has a significantly worse (higher) than average percentage of people living in income deprived areas and significantly worse performance in all of the indicators in the economy domain. The percentage of the population claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance (6.8%) is the highest of all CHPs in Scotland.

The crime rate and the proportion of the population in prison are above the Scottish average. An estimated 670 patients were hospitalised following assaults, a rate significantly above the Scottish average. The percentage of the population living within 500 metres of a derelict site is significantly worse than the Scotland average, whilst 18.5% of people live within the 15% ‘most access deprived’ areas in Scotland.

The percentage of mothers smoking during pregnancy is significantly worse than the Scotland average (29.4%, compared to 22.6%). Fewer than one in five babies are exclusively breastfed at 6-8 weeks, significantly worse than average. Immunisation uptake at 24 months, excluding MMR, is significantly better than average.
