The anasazi lived in the southwestern part of the united states. The word anasazi means ancient ones. People believe the anasazi were the ancestors of the indians.

The anasazi built villages called pueblos. They built them on the top of mesas, or flat-topped muntains with steep sides. They lived in caves that they dug into the sides of cliffs. Homes protected them from the weather and from enemies. It had 1800 rooms that held about 3000 people.

They made beautiful baskets and pottery. They diclined after 1300. in 1400, the anasazi pueblos were empty. There was a drought from about 1275 to 1300.

Anasazi decline might have been poor health. After leaving their homes, the anasazi joined other groups such as the hopi and zuni.

Mound builders lived mostly in the eastern half of the united states. They were known for the huge mounds they formed on the ground the mounds were built in different shapes and sizes. Some were built in the shape of pyramids. Others were built to look like snakes or birds.

The hopewell built mounds in the ohio river valley. The mississipians, lived along the mississipi river. Their mounds were foundations for their temples. The mound builders carried dirt in baskets to the place of the mound. The mound builders had contact and traded with other north american groups.
