Mayor’s Christmas

Message

I thank the Hayle Pump for allowing me this opportunity to write to you on behalf of Hayle Town

Council, wishing all of you a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Hayle continues to thrive and since becoming Mayor I have seen some truly wonderful moments that prove yet again that Hayle is a fantastic town to live and work in. After many months of planning Hayle welcomed the Man Engine to Foundry Square to meet with Jane Harvey (actor), and offer a wonderful show of Cornish history and song, I very much doubt anything will beat this, and the 14,000 or so people that witnessed the event I’m sure will never forget the passion and emotion of the evening. Later in September, Hayle celebrated the new improved Foundry/Harbour Day, the community coming together again, this time on South Quay, with stalls offering goods and services, local charities and organisations with delicious offerings and bands that serenaded all day, all followed by a magnificent firework display, thanks must go to the Foundry Day committee members Chris, Maureen, Mary and Debbie, plus our deputy Harbour master Lauren and all the others that came together to create an event that the town still continues to talk fondly of. I can’t wait for next

year. Our Twinning Association celebrates its 20th anniversary next year, and once again we look forward to welcoming our friends from Pordic to Hayle for what promises to be a very special time. Hayle in Bloom continue to dress our town with colour, their hard work throughout the year is recognised and admired by all, and winning more awards from South West in Bloom, is the very least they deserve. When I became Mayor, my aim was, to have a piece of inclusive play equipment installed on the recreation ground, this is coming closer to reality, after winning funding from the Tesco Bags of Help Appeal, and a promise of a grant from our Council. This will enable children of all abilities to enjoy our wonderful play

area. Next year will see local elections take place, to those councillors that are stepping down after giving many years of service to Hayle, thank you, to anyone that feels they could offer something new to our council please stand up, be counted, make a difference, there are plenty that moan about how the Council performs, this is that chance for you to make a difference. I thank all our volunteers, for continuing to making Hayle great, and again would like to wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year for 2017.

Hayle in Bloom

An early start on October 6 saw eleven Hayle in Bloom

volunteers heading for the RHS and South West in Bloom Awards Ceremony. Our mini bus was ably driven by Chairman Nigel Powell, and the journey through the South West countryside was both beautiful and comfortable. On arrival, it was a privilege to be at the hallowed grounds of Somerset County Cricket Club in Taunton. The day saw awards presented to cities, towns, and villages from throughout the South West of England. Hayle was delighted to win seventeen “In Your Neighbourhood” Awards, plus a Preece Cup Gold Award for overall presentation of the town. The volunteers were presented with certificates and flags to mark the successes.

The volunteers work hard to maintain the gardens, tubs, and baskets throughout the town, and to improve shabby areas. Naturally, they are delighted that their efforts have been recognized. These are the Awards received: Outstanding: Foundry Square Planters. Adopt-a-plot Hayle Celebration Day. King George V Memorial Walk Bodriggy Academy Lethlean Allotments Riviere Sands Holiday Park Save Our Sands Hayle Wharves Branch Line Blooming Bee Day Penpol Terrace. Hayle War Memorial Library Wildlife Garden Library Lifeboat Thriving: Copperhouse Planters.

Advancing: Emergency Services Station. Gold Award, Business, Pleasure and Tourism Riviere Sands Holiday Park.

We have had much support from the town, from businesses, Hayle Town Council, and the citizens. We thank you all. On other news, the summer plantings did well for longer than usual due to the kindly weather, but now the various gardens and tubs have had a tidy up ready for winter. With respect, we would ask that people use the many litter bins provided around the town, as litter is so unsightly. The King George V Memorial Walk is looking lovely as always, with many appreciative visitors leaving

complimentary notes in the greenhouse visitors book. The volunteers have taken advantage of Autumnal pickings to make novel Christmas decorations, and several children from Bodriggy Academy have done sterling work in the Bug Mansion & Wildlife Garden, putting in plants, revamping the pathways, and making bird feeders with pine cones. Look for them, in nearby trees. The Hayle in Bloom volunteers are soon having a Wine & Cheese evening, a social get together, as a celebration of our hard work and success through the year. Hayle Praze Male Voice

Choir

The Choir is pleased to announce the formal appointment of Mr. Stuart Allardice as its Musical Director, effective from the first of October. Stuart has extensive experience with choirs in several parts of the country and originally joined the Second Tenor section of the choir - the remaining members of which congratulate him on his promotion but at the same time regret the loss of his contribution to their part of the ensemble! As reported in the last edition, the Choir is preparing for three Christmas concerts to be held in December, at the Troon Methodist Church on Tuesday 6th, at Phillack Church on Tuesday 13th

and at St. Elwyn’s, Hayle on Friday 16th, all starting at 7.30 pm. The choir remains keen to recruit new members to its ranks; there is no requirement to be able to read music, nor is previous choir experience necessary. Praze Hayle MVC is a small choir but a very friendly one and any potential recruit would receive a warm welcome. If you are interested, ring Don on 757720 or Brian on 811168 and/or come along on Tuesday evening at 7.30 at the Methodist Church Hall where we rehearse every week and have a listen .

Choughs fly off to Jersey

Six Red-billed Choughs bred at Paradise Park have joined the release project in Jersey. Paradise Park Director Alison Hales comments “Lee Durrell, Colin Stevenson and two members of staff came to collect the birds by plane at Perranporth airfield, as they have done in previous years. Doing this saves at least six hours travelling to Jersey via ferry. It’s great that in just

Page 9: Norris & Gertie Gobstopper ( and Father Christmas) wish ... 130/pump issue 130-o.pdf · Paradise Park have joined the release project in Jersey. Paradise Park Director Alison Hales

9

a few hours the young choughs, after veterinary checks, were then in their release aviary on the coast of Jersey.” In Jersey a total of ten Choughs fledged in 2016, four in the wild and six at the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust, Paradise Park’s partner in the project. The six birds captive-bred in Jersey had already had a few weeks of freedom, but Liz Corry, Durrell’s Chough Re-introduction Field Manager had shut them into the large aviary so that they could be mentors for the new arrivals. All twelve are in the release aviary together and the whole group will soon be released to join the larger flock when their period of quarantine is over. FROM LEFT: Bea Denton, Jessica

Maxwell, Colin Stevenson, Alison Hales and Lee Durrell. Ray Hales,

Paradise Park Manager and chief chough enthusiast comments “It was incredibly gratifying to see the young birds we have raised heading off to be released. Just four months ago we were feeding and weighing these youngsters, and now they have left for Big School!” Both Paradise Park and Durrell achieved good captive breeding results, plus a record four wild chicks – only the second year that they have bred in the wild since the project started. The first one for a hundred years was hatched in 2015. ‘Dusty’ as he was named is living

wild and has paired up with one of the females, so perhaps he will produce a second generation in 2017. This has been a particularly successful year for the project, which is part of ‘Birds on the Edge’ a collaboration between Durrell, the National Trust for Jersey and the States of Jersey. Alison Hales comments “With the additional release of twelve youngsters in 2016, the total number of birds living wild will be 36. There’s not a much more wonderful sight to see than a flock of choughs wheeling above the coast then coming down to forage – a great incentive for further habitat improvement on the island.” ***************************************** Why did the turkey join the band? Because it had the drumsticks!*********************************

Council Corner

December 2016/January 2017

Website

The Council recently went out to tender for a new and improved website. Many companies, including several local ones, submitted proposals and the contract was awarded to Blumin, which is based in Hayle. The new website should go live early in the New Year so keep an eye out.

Unfortunately we are unable to make any changes to the existing website so please see the Council’s Facebook pages for regular updates and contact the office for copies of minutes and agendas.

Budget and Precept

It is that time of year when the Council sets the budgets and precept for the financial year 2017-2018. There is now so much to consider, due to the ever increasing number of services that the Town Council provides, that several meetings are required to debate the financial implications for the services and facilities for the forthcoming year.

Hayle Recreation Ground

Hayle Town Council has been successful in securing a grant from the Tesco’s Bags of Support fund. The application was for a fully accessible large swing that all children can use. With this the Town Council will be able to apply for the rec to be an ‘Accessible

11

Play Area’ which would make it the first in Cornwall. Depending on the outcome of the voting process the Town Council may also be able to make additional improvements.

Unhappily the electric lights at the Skate Bowl at Hayle Recreation Ground have had to be isolated due to extreme and dangerous vandalism. The housing and electric fuse and supply boards have now been vandalised on several occasions, even though the doors had been strengthened with steel covers. At an estimated cost of £2,000 to repair, the Council is reviewing the options. As a consequence, the lights will not be on for the foreseeable future. The matter was reported to the Police.

Millpond Gardens

In response to a number of complaints about rats in the vicinity of the Millpond, advice was sought from Cornwall Council’s Pest Control team. Bait boxes were temporarily placed in various positions at the site to address the issue. The Council is duty bound to manage pests and worked with highly qualified pest control officers and took advice from Cornwall Wildlife Trust.

Mayor’s Sponsored Walk in aid of Cornwall Hospice Care

The Mayor wishes to thank everyone who participated and/or helped on the day to make the event so successful. We have recently learned that the total raised is approaching the £6,000 mark!

LET’S MAKE OUR TOWN LOOK EVEN BETTER!

There will be a PUBLIC MEETING on Monday, 23 January, at 7.00 p.m. in the Hayle Day Care Centre to begin organising this.

We are aiming for a date in May, 2017, for a Hayle Clean-up Day.

Anyone may come, but we are especially hoping for representation from voluntary organisations and schools in Hayle and St. Erth.

The meeting will last no more than one hour.

The Great Wall of Carwin 1919 Work on the history of HTP ( Hosken, Trevithick & Polkinghorne Ltd.) and Farm Industries is progressing, but it’s a BIG subject. Here is an intriguing excerpt from the draft where I would appreciate some assistance from your readers. I haven’t the faintest idea why a wall was needed in 1919 across what was probably Pulsack

land and Loggans Moor. We have no explanation for the following Hadrian thinking in H.T.P. There is a letter in April addressed to F Mitchell, a contractor of Camborne, regarding the construction of a 600 foot stone wall to be built across fields from the Camborne Road to Gwithian Road, (now Carwin Rise) to Loggans Road. It was intended to be 8 feet tall and 2 feet wide with a bridge over the leat. Mr W T Blewett, the chemist who had offered only £600 for the property he occupied in Penpol Terrace and not risen to the asking price required by H.T.P., wrote to suggest that the wall could be built from materials from a Harvey & Co wall. H.T.P. replied that its directors did not wish to have anything to do with the throwing down of Harvey’s wall but preferred that their contractor should obtain his materials elsewhere. This was clearly a snub to Mr Blewett. On the same day they wrote again to Mr Mitchell, asked for a price and suggested that he could use the old Harvey stone! Mr Mitchell replied that he would tender but we found no more correspondence and a search through newspapers seeking advertisements for tenders was fruitless. I have looked at the details I have that might be connected to the Great Wall: Negotiations started by HTP with RWG Tyringham of Trevetho in 1916 to acquire a piece of land bounded by the line of the wall. It was not until 1919 that HTP sought a builder for the wall. I suppose negotiations had continued

slowly. This leaves room for some

answers from your readership. Please get in touch if you have any information or memories about H.T.P. Lighting I am writing in the middle of November, and we are still

struggling to find a team of volunteers who can help to put up the lights. It is getting increasingly difficult to find willing helpers. Every year due to the wind and rain we have set pieces and strings of lights which take a battering and become lifeless, and it can be expensive and time consuming to repair them. Luckily this year once again we have one man, Stuart Knowles and his son Daniel to come to the rescue.

Page 17: Norris & Gertie Gobstopper ( and Father Christmas) wish ... 130/pump issue 130-o.pdf · Paradise Park have joined the release project in Jersey. Paradise Park Director Alison Hales

17

They have been out in all weathers working hard to get the lights ready for Hayle, without them the town would have no display at all. Another local man and electrician, Des Button has generously given his time to sort out the electric boxes to power these lights. Thank you, Des. Because of the lack of helpers, there is no “switch-on” this year which would have been on 25 November at the Day Care Centre. It had to be cancelled as we felt that without new displays there would be no new areas of lights to give the ‘wow’ factor. Also with just the two people to do it all, we couldn’t have a deadline. The committee would like to say a big Thank You to Chris Lello who every year supplies us with a cherry picker to sort across the road and high buildings, without this machine, once again – No Lights. A big Thank You to everyone in Hayle who has donated money to the Lights when they can. We still have collecting boxes in a lot of the shops, so please continue to give generously – every little helps and we are most grateful. The town will be lit up some time in December. Hayle Film Club straddles life's fantasies and reality On Saturday 10th December Hayle's community cinema will end the year with tour de force performances by Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant, in Stephen Frears's FLORENCE FOSTER JENKINS. Based on the true story of the renowned New York arts patron who was determined to sing opera despite being blissfully unaware of her tone-deafness, this tale of self-delusion has warmth, charm and humour to spare -- a perfect antidote for sobering times. Join us afterwards for Christmas refreshments. Looking ahead to our winter-spring programme: on Saturday, 14th January, we're planning to screen the offbeat New Zealand adventure comedy-drama HUNT FOR THE WILDERPEOPLE, starring Sam Neill. And later in the month, on Thursday the 26th, it'll be a dose of reality with Ken Loach's well-received I, DANIEL BLAKE, requested by a number of our members, about a carpenter who finds himself in need of state aid after falling ill. The film won the Palme d'Or, the highest prize, at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival. Later in February we hope to present the 1954 musical CARMEN JONES, starring Dorothy Dandridge and Harry Belafonte, and Pedro Almodovar's latest film, JULIETA. Other titles on our

winter-spring wish list include QUEEN OF KATWE (also requested by several members), Tom Ford's NOCTURNAL ANIMALS, as well as A UNITED KINGDOM and the German comedy-drama TONI ERDMANN. More details to come in future issues of the Pump. All screenings take place upstairs at the Passmore Edwards Institute and begin promptly at 7.30pm. Tickets are £5 per person (£4 for members; membership is just £5 per year), bookable by phone (01736 752319) or online at www.haylefilmclub.org.uk. Tickets at the door are subject to availability. All are welcome. With thanks again to everyone who supports the Hayle Film Club throughout the year! PCDT Community Development Team - update West Cornwall

As some of you will be aware as you have received support of one kind or another from us at some point in time, we were funded by Cornwall Council via an infrastructure grant with the aim to give free advice and support to small and medium sized community groups on a range of topics. Unfortunately Cornwall Council, regretfully, took the decision to withdraw funding for this project from the end of September 2016 onwards.

The Community Development Team will be continuing to work with community groups in a variety of ways and of course be looking at funding opportunities for continuing this vital work in the future. However, at present the work that we will be doing will be through our consultancy services, although this is a paid for service, many groups may have already been able to access funding or may be able to access it, to support this consultancy work with their groups – if you are interested in this and feel that this may benefit your organisation then please email us and ask for details.

Letters to the Editor There is no need to take your framing far and wide - the experts are right in Hayle. With your artistic creations, go and see Heather Dyer at HD Framing in Pratt’s Market. I collected Christmas bits and pieces such as cracker cardboard, ribbon, baubles, sweet papers and wove a background of dark blue and black linen and added gold Lurex. This was an adventure into tapestry weaving, using unusual materials. I left the tapestry at HD and returned a few weeks later. My initial response was one of utter amazement. It was stunning. Good framing makes all the difference to

the original item, Heather did a wonderful job, she brought the tapestry alive.

Long Lost Family

On a recent visit to Cornwall, my family from Newcastle and I visited the old church in Phillack and saw the gravestone of my great-grandparents, James and Elizabeth Ann Roberts who both died in 1909. From the 1881 census records we know that they had the following children: Richard Thomas (born 7/10/1863/4), Elizabeth Ann (born 24/6/1866), Edward James (born 27/10/1869), Laura (date of birth unknown) and Louis (born 22/9/1878). John, my grandfather, was born on 28/1/1872. He moved to the Pietermaritzburg area, Natal, South Africa when he was about 16 where he died on 30/5/1936. I would love to hear from any descendants of James and Elizabeth Ann Roberts who may still be living in Cornwall.

My postal address is 17 Princess Road, Bergvliet, 7945, Cape Town, South Africa.

one 'improvement' that I, and other community members, cannot fathom is the water that now drips (or pours depending on the weather) down from the railway bridge on to the path below. I have seen ladies on mobility scooters, mothers with buggies and prams, slow walking elderly and those with disabilities get drenched walking along this path. NEVER in all the years that I have lived here has it done this, until the track was recently maintained. In winter this deluge of water will become a skating rink and then there will be accidents, slips and falls. On another note to do with this part of Hayle, why do none of the lights in the path work either?

Catherine Groom, Hayle

I would prefer reading the Hayle Pump to reading the Times or the daily Mail! It is full of information and fun. Excellent journal.

Yours sincerely, John Nott (former MP for St Ives 1966-83)

Local Hospital Update

We have made significant improvements at St Michaels for our patients over the last two years. On average now 90 patients per week have breast surgery or orthopaedic operations, such as hip and knee replacements. That’s 20 more patients each week compared to 2014. Not only does this include the more regular procedures we have always done but we are now able to offer more complex surgery at St Michaels that previously we could only provide at our main hospital site in Truro. Our hospital now is supported by an increased team of specialist

therapists who aim to stand all our patients who have joint replacements on the day of surgery – no longer do we have patients staying in bed. If you are able, we will give the help and confidence to be out of bed and standing on your new joint on the same day that you have your surgery! It means recovery starts straight-away, patients go home sooner to continue their rehabilitation in a familiar environment, and puts St Michael’s among the best hospitals nationally. For those who aren’t aware of our facilities, at St Michaels we have four ultraclean ‘laminar flow’ operating theatres which are able to support joint replacement and major breast surgery – these are the highest specification operating theatres available and we are very proud of our facility here. Not only are they high specification they are fully used and again we achieve nationally recognised utilisation levels at over 85%. If you have been to St Michaels recently you will have seen that we have changed our areas to create a dedicated admissions, discharge and day case area on St Michaels Ward, this is to enable St Joseph’s Ward to focus on the post-operative care of the patients. We are finding this is working well for us and our patients. We ask all patients to comment on their stay with us and regularly 100% of those who respond say they would recommend us to their friends and family. We also achieve a 5-star rating on NHS Choices (www.nhs.uk). Our active group of volunteers regularly support us and our patients

helping to improve the services we offer and providing the coffee bar for people who are waiting at the hospital for relatives, friends or outpatient appointments. We are always keen to hear from people who may have a few hours spare to volunteer at St Michaels and if you are interested please contact Jacqueline on 07955 354853 for further information. If anyone would like to discuss any of the information I have given above or has any suggestions on how we can improve St Michaels Hospital further, I would be happy to speak to groups or individuals, please contact me at: [email protected]. *************************************** Why don't you ever see Father Christmas in hospital? HAYLE

TWINNING ASSOCIATION

Another year another visit to our

twinned town of PORDIC, in fact our 19th annual trip. This year we left on Saturday 27 August and returned on Wednesday 31 August, so between our two towns this crossing has

Page 28: Norris & Gertie Gobstopper ( and Father Christmas) wish ... 130/pump issue 130-o.pdf · Paradise Park have joined the release project in Jersey. Paradise Park Director Alison Hales

been made on 38 occasions on several different ferries. Once again there was a full programme arranged. On the Sunday we spent time with our host families until early evening, when there was the welcome from the maire M. Maurice Battas at The Salle des Fetes and then dinner at 20.00 hrs. This was accompanied by a very good group led by a youngster, the young Elvis and was enjoyed by everyone, both those who danced and those who listened. Monday there was a trip to Beauport Abbey for a walk around the gardens and a picnic, then it was off to the Arcouest area in Paimpol, after which it was time to do some shopping at Intermarché in Pordic. Tuesday morning we met at the mairie in Pordic for some classical music with the AMATI TRIO - these were the musicians from our group, and everyone enjoyed this interlude. It was then onto the local bus for a trip into Saint Brieuc, here we had a walk around and then went into a Creperie where we enjoyed their crepes and cider. After this it was off to the old part of the city and then into the ancient cathedral where we had a well-conducted tour and talk about its history. The younger members of the group with children had gone off to the Amori leisure park, they then went to the coast at Tregastel. Other places visited were Cap Frehel - this is a beautiful bit of coast line with great views across the bay, Forte Latte was also visited, this was the fort that was in the film the Vikings where Tony Curtis and Kirk Douglas had a fight right at the top

of it, from up there the view is as they would say in Cornwall ‘ansome. Then on the Wednesday morning came the goodbyes and see you next year. Next year is our 20th, we would really like to do something for this so if you see that anytime we are putting something on to raise funds please support us, also remember that our twinning is open to anyone in Hayle so if you would like a chance to enjoy a different culture then by all means contact us we meet once a month in Asda's meeting room, 7.00pm for 7.15 start. On Sat. 5th November we had a coach trip to Exeter for a little shopping. It was well supported and enjoyed by all so my thanks to everyone who travelled with us. Next year we could be going to either Taunton or Clarke’s village in Street, it all depends on the numbers who wish to travel, if interested call me and give me your preference. MAURICE 01736 753341

Millpond Update

What was it I said recently about swan psychology? After making a triumphal return to the Millponds, Oberon and Titania seem to have another change of heart and have gone back to Copperhouse Pool. So until the next time we are visited by our ‘love birds’ swanless we must

Page 30: Norris & Gertie Gobstopper ( and Father Christmas) wish ... 130/pump issue 130-o.pdf · Paradise Park have joined the release project in Jersey. Paradise Park Director Alison Hales

30

remain once more. Autumn has visually been a delight. The colours have been spectacular, reminiscent of the crimsons and golds of the American Fall. The water in the ponds has been silt-free and clear and pondweed has started to grow again in the Swan Pool. Our Mallard drakes have finished their summer moult and look presentable again. The females have returned to the pond but we do not appear to have had a good season for ducklings. We did raise two on the ponds plus six moorhen chicks and there were two clutches on the Angarrack Canal which survived the rooks that have probably arrived back with the females. The Gadwall have been and gone on their autumn migration to Tresco and we also have a small group of wild Mallard on the Inner Pond which stay with us for the winter.

The Black-headed gulls have now arrived headed back for the winter together with the juvenile Glaucus and Mediterranean gulls. Our Herring gull population has declined because they no longer nest on the houses along Millpond Avenue and the old Telephone Exchange. We have a couple of females with chicks at the moment, but they seem to be the only visitors for now.

Page 31: Norris & Gertie Gobstopper ( and Father Christmas) wish ... 130/pump issue 130-o.pdf · Paradise Park have joined the release project in Jersey. Paradise Park Director Alison Hales

The jays are still with us and we have a small flock of white doves semi-resident in Millpond Gardens. They are locally owned and make an attractive welcome addition to our resident population. Now the weather is cooling and becoming more unsettled the turtles are only being seen on the odd sunny day and will soon disappear until the Spring. Picasso is the only one which actually hibernates, the rest just snooze the winter away. The winter visitors are beginning to arrive. Our small flock of long-tailed tits, various finches, and pied wagtails can be seen along the Rope Walk and around the ponds, but our merlin has not yet appeared. Our thanks to our gardeners and grass cutters for all their work, also to the Decorative Lights Committee for their display at the Swan Pool. In the words of this year’s set-piece ‘A Merry Christmas to All.’ ‘Nadelik Lowen ha bledhen Nowyth Da.’

LOOKING FOR A BASS VOICE THERE IS A GAP! ....... ARE YOU THE SPECIAL PERSON WITH A RICH BASS VOICE WHO IS MISSING FROM OUR MIXED CHOIR?

WE ARE ' ONE AND ALL' OF HAYLE, AND ARE LOOKING FOR

....a few of our choir members who are waiting to welcome you. In our performances we usually have twelve voices, but the choir consists of up to fifteen because we like to have a few floaters. At the moment we are looking to accept at least one and possibly two bass voices. The ability to read music is not essential, but having a good 'ear' and being able to hold a note when others are singing a different one definitely is! We sing a wide variety of music ranging between songs from musical theatre and secular all the way through to madrigals and sacred. Based in Hayle for rehearsals, which are on Friday afternoons, we regularly travel far and wide to village halls around the area to entertain groups of people at afternoon friendship clubs and some church or chapel services and celebrations. We cover the ground from St Austell to St Just, car-sharing and chipping in with petrol money. The fees we charge then buy us new sheet music or equipment.A We understand that life can sometimes get in the way of

commitment to anything we do for pleasure, like singing, but this choir strives for continued improvement by constantly putting in the practice. In this way we can get huge satisfaction from perfecting what at first might have seemed difficult. It is fun at the same time, and we are really fortunate to have an excellent teacher who, with good humour and great patience somehow enables us to make it all happen. There is often plenty of banter and laughter at our rehearsals, making the balance of hard work and fun just perfect. During December we will be refreshing some old, and learning some new Christmas music, but will be starting afresh in the new year with polishing up our existing wide repertoire and adding new music as we go along. If any bass-voiced ones amongst you would like to come along to try us out either at our rehearsals or a gig, we would like to meet you. If any groups would like us to entertain them, your organiser is welcome to come along too. Informal Consultation on Closing the King George

V Memorial Walk

The on-line survey on additional closures of the Memorial Walk ended on 31 October and there were 255 responses.

The first question was: “Do you support the current closure on Sundays?” and only 3.5% objected or objected strongly.

The second question had three parts: “Do you support additional closure on Bank Holidays?”, “Do you support additional closure on Saturdays?” and “Do you support permanent closure”.

The results gave the following preferences:

Bank Holidays 82% weighted support

Saturdays 72% weighted support

Every Day 58% weighted support

If we were to amend the closure a

Road Traffic Order would be required and this would cost a minimum of £5,000.

The town council looked at these results, heard from residents of Clifton Terrace who were strongly opposed to further closures, and considered the costs and decided to stick with the current Sunday closure. I would have liked to see Bank Holidays added but the cost was too high.

FREE COMMUNITY LUNCH

The Hayle Hub, part of Transition Penwith, seeks to build positive communities through fun initiatives that promote wide-ranging areas, from social inclusion to sustainability. The hub offered a free lunch to anyone in the area keen to book on, and sought donations from local farms to enable it to happen. Hayle-based story teller Samuel Marsden enthralled children with his recently published book, Cornish Tales. The fire service kindly took up the suggestion to show a fire engine just outside the Day Centre which children (and adults too!) loved exploring. Locally-based Cuban band, Rumba Diablo, was the perfect addition to the wonderfully upbeat atmosphere. One of the organisers, Jane Haskings, told guests about the hub’s aims of the day. She explained how eating locally-produced food reduces food miles and helps keep money in the county; vegetables were very kindly donated from nearby farms, Bosavern Community Farm, Trevaskis and Richards. New small local business Bosparva Bakery kindly provided bread, topped up by donations from Vicky’s Bread and Archie Browns in Penzance. Apples for the dessert were from Jane’s own garden. www.transitionpenwith.org.uk/hubs/hayle
