The Norman invasion

1016, England was conquered by the Danish king Canute, an effective ruler

Canute had married Emma, the widow of the Saxon king Ethelred, who had a son Edward

Canute died, his sons did not reign long 1042, reign of Edward the Confessor, the

Saxon line of kings was restored Edward was a weak king Edward had no children, died in 1066

The Norman invasion

Edward had no children, died in 1066 Succession trouble, three men claimed

the throne: 1) The son of Edward´s father-in-law Earl

Godwin of Wessex, Harold Godwin, claimed that Edward had promised him the throne on his deathbed

2) Duke William of Normandy claimed that Edward had promised him the throne as well

3) Edward´s great-nephew, Harald Hardrada, the king of Norway
