students. We received the following from one of her students and we couldn’t have said it better: “This module I have been completely touched by one of my instructors

Ms. Susan Ashley. Ms. Ashley refuses to let you give up and she pushes and encourages you to give your very best. If it was not for her, I would not graduate in May because I was at the point of giving up because physically, emotionally, and mentally I was in a state of pain, hurt and depression. Though her support, encouragement and emails I was able to overcome.”

Susan Ashley’s true compassion and tireless dedication has touched many student for the better and we are honored to recognize her as the 2011 Teacher of the Year. r

At the recent Annual Education and Professional Development Conference, Centura College’s Online Campus’ Susan Ashley received honors as the 2011 Teacher of the Year. Ashley is a proven educator in two educational environments. She has been an online teacher since 2005 and has touched the lives of over 2200 students in the classroom and many more as a tutor. Additionally, she has taught in the residential classroom since 2009. Being an educator in both the classroom and online demonstrates her deep commitment to education and in challenging herself to become a resourceful, devoted educator.

Ashley states that her passions in life are accounting, computers, and sharing knowledge with those students inspired to learn. She has been dedicated to getting an education herself with degrees in both Accounting and Graphic Design. Her education experience, combined with her life and career experiences, have helped her become very versatile as a professional educator.

Ashley is a down-to-earth individual who is responsive to her students’ needs. She has changed many lives for the better with the sincere dedication she has for all of her

With its first on-site testing, Centura College-Alexandria proudly recognizes four newly certified medical assistant (MA) graduates; Natasha Clark, Selamawit Barkene, Jazmine Harris and Tonae Williams. These graduates took advan-tage of the National Associa-tion for Health Profession’s test administered on the Alexandria campus. It has served as a tremendous mo-tivation for up-coming grads seeking certification!

“I am very glad they are offering the test here at Centura College because it is very convenient,” stated student, Patricia Perea, “I am in the process of moving back home to New Mexico so getting certified here before I leave is a great motivation.” With

so many choosing the medical profession these days, any service that gives Centura College graduates an upper-hand is advanta-geous. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics

states that medical assistants with formal training or experi-ence—particularly those with certification—should have the best job opportunities, since employers generally prefer to hire these workers.

“The initial process has been very smooth, adequate time al-

lotted for the test and the students are react-ing very positively,” said Linda Oprean, Cen-tura’s Director of Education. Students are also able to receive certification in Phlebotomy, Billing and Coding and Administrative Op-erations. r

Inaugural On-Campus Testing Produces 4 Certified Medical Assistants

by Haneef Shakur, CWAS We are happy to announce that the following students and graduates have successfully passed their National Association of Health Professionals (NAHP) Medical Assistants Certification Exam. The graduates include: Haydee Rivera; Siobhan Eadie; Andrea Stahman; LaTrenda Paul and Anjelina Walker. The current students are Kortney Landers; Wilbert Mavins and Luis Rodriguez. The NAHP is a nationally recognized credentialing association whose primary purpose is the evaluation of those who wish to enter, continue, or advance in their profession through the certification process and the issuance of credentials to those who meet the required level of competency.

This examination is a comprehensive test that challenges the student’s cumulative knowledge by validating competencies in the areas of general medical, administrative and clinical knowledge. CONGRATULATIONS CERTIFIED MEDICAL ASSISTANTS! r

This event was celebrated at The Spirit Events Building in Newport News. Students marched down the aisle by their program coordinators and witnessed by family, friends, faculty, staff, and the President of the Student Council.

The ceremony consisted of the welcome by Tonya Oglesby, Student Services Coordi-nator; the statement of purpose of the Na-tional Technical Honor Society by Student

Students Helping Studentsby Jeannie Gonzales, CCHE

Students Helping Students is a program, started in April 2011, which empowers students to help each other. As with many college students, money is tight and today’s economy isn’t helping.

Through student polls, it has been realized how much of an issue transportation is caus-ing with our students.

Meet Tyrone and Rondal. Their stories are like many others here at Centura College, Chesapeake. Rondal began his Computer Network Management program in June 2010. He has been relying on friends and bus transportation to get to his classes. Tyrone started his Business Management program

Virginia Beach Campus Participates in MDA Fundraiser

by Jeffery Barbour & Mary Morgan, CVAB

Change for Changeby Maria Williams, CRIM

The Virginia Beach campus of Centura Col-lege held a fundraising drive throughout April to raise donations for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). The fun-draiser began with a picture of Mrs. Mary Morgan, our Student Advi-sor, posted onto the school website to capture atten-tion as she became one of the area’s “Most Wanted” for being caring, good-natured and influential in raising “bail” donations for the MDA.

The featured event was held on Thursday, April

14, 2011, when Morgan was placed “Behind Bars” to raise “bail” funds from a Bake Sale for her release. The students, staff and fac-ulty watched as Mrs. Morgan was “Locked-Up” from 9-11 AM and again from 5-7 PM.

During that time, they purchased the delicious baked goods and pizza that were donated by staff and faculty for the sale. With the help of the contributions, Mrs. Morgan was released, and the Centura College of Virginia Beach Campus raised $400.00 to benefit the MDA and make a positive different in the lives of those affected by MDA in Hampton Roads. r“Jailbird” Mary Morgan

Centura College-Richmond’s faculty mem-bers were celebrated each day of the week from May 23rd to May 26th. On Monday, the Medical Assisting program kicked off the week long celebration by serving a va-riety of fresh donuts and juice. On Tuesday, the Medical Billing and Coding Specialist pro-gram continued the cel-ebration by serving a variety of desserts such as strawberries, choco-late candies, and cook-ies. The celebration continued on Wednes-day with a luncheon sponsored by the Prac-

Centura students, faculty and staff are mak-ing a change with their change! During a campaign called “Change for Change”, the Midlothian campus raised $125.00 for different charities in the Richmond com-munity. Each month, students, faculty and staff choose a local charity and donate their loose change. Our goal has been $25.00 per month. By the end of 2011, our school hopes to raise $300.00 for 12 different charities.

Past recipients include: The Boys and Girls Club of Metro Richmond; The American

tical Nursing program. Lunch consisted of sandwiches, a fresh garden salad, chips, and cupcakes. The luncheon was highlighted with a drawing for a Centura jacket. Buffy Gray was our day winner and Shannon Rice was our evening winner. During the lun-

cheon, all instructors received individual Centura DayTripper Gift Sets which con-tained a tumbler, a Thermo-Go Bottle with an insulated carrying bag. On Thursday, the Computer Network Management pro-gram concluded the week long celebration

by serving fresh strawberries, a variety of cheeses, fresh muffins and fruit smoothies. Zoe Thompson, Our Executive School Director, Ann Tribbey, our DOE along with each pro-gram coordinator and adminis-trative assistant really made this a special week for our faculty. r

Mrs. Dumas, Externship Medical Assisting Coordinator assigned a project for her Bill-ing and Coding class to pay it forward.

The community service project involved reading to Palmer Elementary School stu-dents in Newport News. The students met on March 10th. March is Dr. Seuss’s birth-day month, therefore, Centura students se-lected to read ‘Yertle the Turtle “and “I Ran the Circle” by Dr. Seuss. The students from the elementary school enjoyed the stories and commented about them.

This was a great experience for both Cen-tura and Palmer Elementary students. The students asked the Centura students to come back and read to them again. r

Heart Association; New Vision/New Ven-tures Women’s Center; Virginia Literacy Foundation and Comfort Zone Camp. “What a wonderful way for the students of Centura College to help other through liter-acy,” states Mark Emblidge of the Virginia Literacy Foundation in Richmond. In honor of Father’s Day on June 19th, we hope to raise $25.00 for the American Cancer Soci-ety on the fight against Prostate Cancer.

The “Change for Change” campaign shows that a little can go a long way. r

Students... Continued from page 3in March 2011. Tyrone was also trying to rely on the bus and friends for transportation to school. Both students live in Portsmouth and it’s quite a hike to get to class. These students can expect to spend two hours on a bus that will take them to Greenbrier Mall. There are various stops on the way including bus trans-fers. When they get to the mall, they still have a 10 – 15 minute walk to reach school.

Diane Tyler, a Computer Network Manage-ment student at Centura College Peninsula for 15 months, has learned a great deal from her computer networking classes. She men-tioned how her journey had been long, but she knew how to put her fears behind and believe that she would accomplish what she had set out to achieve.

Diane Tyler, Star Student in the Computer Network Management Program

by Tonya Oglesby, CPENTyler had anticipated going to college for a long time, but needing to raise her family took first priority. Now, that she has raised her children, she could focus her time on herself and earning her degree. When Tyler enrolled at Centura College she could not help but notice how younger the students were in her program, but she brushed it off and remained focus. This is the reason that she has succeeded. Tyler states that time spent at Centura College was very reward-ing and she had great instructors and an awesome Coordinator. She is proud of her-self for making a tough decision to return to school. Diane’s goal after graduation was to obtain her Network and Security Certifica-tions; this has been done prior to graduation. Diane has also landed a job in her field, she loves what she is doing and would like to thank everyone for all the help that was given to her during her time with Centura College Peninsula. r

Bad weather and late buses became a major issue.

Now let’s meet Latisha. She began her Massage Therapy program in May 2011. She noted on the transportation form that she lives in Portsmouth and was willing to help peers that live in her area with a ride to and from school. Within her first week, she was matched up with Tyrone and Rondal. They have been carpooling together for a week or so now and everyone is getting to class on time and without worry to whether or not it’s raining! r
