By Dave ScottAnyone who organizes a fundraising event will tell you it is one of the most nerve racking things you can do… you worry about folks donating, wonder if everyone knows what they are doing, you hope the weather co-operates, will people show up, and will they have a good time… all this swirls in your mind… but you know… after all the fundraisers I have done for the Norfolk Youth & Children Association (NYCA)… I just don’t sweat it anymore.

For me… like last week’s Zip-Raiser for the NYCA, out at Long Point Eco-Adventures… it is just about the folks who come and Zip… some of these folks have come out for three years… and when the group gets together… well… let’s just say these grown-ups turn into the camp kids they raise money to help! Which is a good thing… you know as adults, we stress ourselves out over the littlest things… we forget so quickly that it is okay to be a kid every now and then… to let ourselves be just a little silly or goofy… to laugh at nothing… to enjoy each other’s company… to

walk away tired… giggling…

Every year I marvel at these folks… business leaders in our community… who come out and play with us.

To the staff of Eco, who are willing to participate in our 24 hour endeavour… who keep us safe… huh… university kids who are the guides… watching us adults act like kids… I hope they had as much fun as we did!

The last zip Friday morning, I stayed behind and began to clean up… I could hear the group out in the trees… laughing, hollering, joking around… it felt good inside… our goal was to raise funds for the NYCA… and we were successful… but just hearing those folks have a blast on the zips made me smile… friendships for life had been formed over the last 24 hours… and at summer camp a few more kids will get that same opportunity!

Thank you

Deb… from Scotiabank Simcoe… from billboard, to Pottahawk to zipping… our friendship continues to grow.

Cassandra and Jamie… Body Project Fitness, by Ironmasters… thanks for all the help in the last year… your energy and passion for helping others is strength beyond belief!

Ron and Chantelle… Rick McCall Volkswagen… there is a photo of you two together… happy, sharing and enjoying… thanks for always helping…

Henry… Eising Greenhouses and Garden Centre… a one man comedy routine himself… he keeps us all laughing… go… go… go…

Mike… CD98.9… hope we didn’t scare you too much… you were the cool pro… who kept us on the radio and the funds coming in…

John… Halnor Equipment… Johnny V… out of the blue, would come the one liner that would send the group into a punch drunk state of laughter… thanks for keeping it light… and thanks to his daughter, Khristien, for tagging along.

Amy… South Coast Dental Care… hope you had a great time… Monica and I thank you for all you do to

help the NYCA.

Wally… Charles Jones… thanks for diving into the unknown with us… now that you have a year under your belt you are ready for anything… thanks for getting involved… 24 hours… need I say more!

Erin and Lirum… thanks for taking a day off school and hanging around with your dad and mom to support a good cause…

Cheryl and Abbey… Cider Keg… always… always… always… community minded folks… helping others… making the time… thank you!

Monica… my heart and soul… everyday I am lucky enough to see the passion and love you have for wanting to help children… thank you… for making me a better person!

Lastly Monica and I want to thank a friend who could not come zipping this year… she means the world to us. She has stuck by the NYCA through thick and thin… to her, ‘Be strong… get strong… and we all love you!’

By Dave ScottIf the size of the crowd at the McDonald’s in Simcoe last Wednesday, May 2nd for McHappy Day was any indication… then it must have been a huge success!

About the time I was arriving, local KIA owner, Kelly Fulsom, was preparing to help out at the take-out window… meanwhile behind the counter, some of Norfolk County’s finest (OPP) were helping to serve…

and in the drive-thru line, athletes of our own Special Olympics were busy selling the big red shoe for the walls inside.

Every year, I am more impressed at just how many folks get involved

with McHappy Day.

Nationally since 1977 McHappy Day has raised over $35 million for the Ronald McDonald House Program and local children’s charities across Canada.

The two top fundraisers were Jaymie Reeder and Korissa Hammond… and of course Scotiabank Simcoe was on board,

ready to help out!

The grand total raised was just over $5000 and the bowlers

By Dave ScottAt the library in Simcoe last week, a gathering of friends, family and dignitaries gathered to remember the life and times of the late Hazel B. Race and to dedicate the new programming room in her honour.

Both Hazel and John (her husband) were strong believers in literacy and the influence our local libraries play in bringing the joy of reading to all.

I found it interesting that John shared stories of his wife with the audience… but what hit a chord was the passion he

spoke with, when reminding the group of the importance of maintaining our libraries, of recognizing that there should be no budget cuts where libraries are concerned… of course John is right… and the tone in which he spoke, was that of a man who knew what his wife would have wanted… of what we all must protect… for the young, and old… thank you Hazel and John for always thinking of others.

When you stop by the Simcoe Library make sure to head upstairs and check out the Hazel B. Race Programming Room.

By Cindy PichetteI am a Baby Boomer. My childhood memories include watching the Ed Sullivan Show in black and white, and full service gas stations with attendants who not only pumped our gas but checked the oil and washed the windows too. Like most Baby Boomers (and Peter Pan) I think that I will never grow old, and please do not use the "S" word on me. The word Senior is reserved for those people older than me, who not only deserve my respect but also my gratitude for paving the way to make life easier for us.

But, while my mind thinks I will never grow old, my body has other ideas. My right knee has no interest in running up the stairs and my hands are incapable of the simple task of opening a water bottle. At some point (if I am lucky) I will grow old, and when I do, I want to be independent and live comfortably in my own home.

Port Dover has become a popular destination for the Baby Boomer and Retiree demographic wanting to downsize square footage and step up the quality finishes and I see Port Dover builders hard at work building two bedroom, two bath bungalows with main floor laundry, but is this enough? Simple affordable modifications at the time of construction can mean the As a local Realtor®, I sell homes to people in my age demographic and would like to make sure people give serious thought to the Aging in Place concept when choosing to build a new home.

People of all ages value the ability to live independently and most of us prefer to remain in our own home for as long as it is safe, convenient and comfortable. Without a plan it can be hard to stay in control of our lives. Preparing for a safe and accessible future should go hand in hand with choosing cabinet styles and paint colours. Modifications to your new construction can be

designed to provide the elegance you require now and the safety features you may need in the future. Many modifications will be low cost or even no cost (think lower light switches, higher electrical outlets). A small investment now will not only increase the safety and enjoyment of your home but can increase the resale value as well. (These costs will pale in comparison to the year in, year out, ever increasing costs of assisted living facilities.)

As we age we are often challenged by everyday activities we once considered 'normal'. Reduced hearing, eye sight, cognitive ability and mobility are normal, age related issues. Even arthritis can make simple tasks like opening a door, walking up stairs and bending and reaching difficult. Taking a bath or shower can be a challenging or even dangerous task without proper installations. Simple modifications such as installing extra studding and plywood behind the bathroom tile or tub surround at the time of construction will mean the future addition of grab bars and other safety features can be done with minimal cost and effort. (By the way, grab bars have come a long way. New innovative designs include luxurious bathroom accessories that also happen to be grab bars 'hidden in plain site'.)

Two years ago, when we completed major renovations to the main floor of our home, we incorporated 'Universal' or 'Aging in Place' design and created a safe and accessible living space for people of all abilities. This also means that everything will be accessible to us if one of us were to fall or 'break a hip' and need to use a wheelchair temporarily or even permanently. The bedroom is larger now with a walk in closet, we have wide doorways and a wide hallway. The shower is walk in and the faucets are mounted to the side of the sinks instead of behind them. The kitchen has plenty of space to manoeuvre,

most of the lower storage is drawers and all the hardware is shaped like a "D". The stove has front controls, the dishwasher is double drawer and the fridge is side by side with long handles. The flooring is a commercial grade vinyl which I find easier on my body then ceramic tile, simple to keep clean and I love it's mother-of-pearl finish. We designed these renovations with style and elegance and to date not one person has noticed that our home is wheelchair accessible.

Building homes to live in while you age does not mean your home will take on an institutional look. Most modifications will add to the comfort and enjoyment of your home now as well as promoting safety and accessibility in the future. I find that having a wider entry and hallway makes it much easier to handle bags of groceries. Using the walk-in shower to wash our 13 year old, overweight golden retriever is simple. If I ever require a hospital bed, having wider doorways will allow the bed to be placed comfortably in the privacy of my bedroom instead of in the living room.

Even though our spirits remain young, growing old is natural and inevitable, accidents can happen

and none of us are immune from serious illness. We don't know what the future will bring. Preparing the home at the point of construction will give you a better chance of living a happy, safe and independent life well into old age in your own home. We can either look at these Aging in Place modifications as an unnecessary cost that can wait until later, or as a key step to preserving our independence.

If you are looking at model homes or planning on purchasing a new home in the Port Dover area, I would love to meet with you and explain the concept further, develop a plan with you, and help you negotiate these modifications to fit your personal lifestyle and goals. Most builders work with Realtors® and you deserve to have your own representation when making such a large purchase. Bikers Rights of Erie Shores support OR Revitalization Project - $1800 donation to help provide necessary medical equipmentThanks to the Bikers Rights Organization (BRO) of Erie Shores, the Norfolk General Hospital Foundation has added $1800.00 towards the Operating Room Revitalization Project, the third and final stage in the ‘Lend a Hand’ campaign.

“I’ve spent a lot of time in hospitals over the years. We all have family in this area and we know there aren’t as many large companies as there once was. This is why we continue to raise funds for NGH,” said Vern Ferris, BRO treasurer and provincial liaison. “It’s important for us to keep our hospital and have the equipment that’s necessary to ensure we have the health care that is needed,” said Ferris.

“We really appreciate the Bikers Rights Organization fundraising efforts throughout the year and thank them for choosing to support our hospital,” said Kelly Isfan, NGH president and CEO.

The Bikers Rights Organization of Erie Shores has become known for their strong voice for area motorcycle enthusiasts, promoting safety, advocacy, friendship amongst fellow riders and improving the understanding and awareness of motorcycles and enthusiasts.

Over the last six years, Bikers Rights Organization of Erie Shores has donated nearly $7000.00 to the NGH Foundation. Monies raised are generated through Motorcycle Monday’s held from June to August and their popular breakfasts at Angelo’s of Dover held during the warm months of Friday the 13.

By MARG WERDEN Lyme disease protectionAfter speaking to a reader of last week’s column, who found a tick on herself, I’m going to start this week by saying, if you find a tick on yourself, don’t panic. As I wrote last week, a tick has to feed for at least 24 hours before it can transmit the Borrelia bacterium that causes Lyme disease, so frequent tick checks, and prompt removal of the tick, are essential to avoiding infection.

Lyme disease was first identified in Lyme, Connecticut in the 1970s and is now well established in two large regions in the north-eastern and north-central United States. In the early 1990s, the Lyme disease cycle was only known in Canada on Long Point in Lake Erie but, over the past 15 years, it has been confirmed in several other locations in Ontario and in other provinces.

Although it is important to be aware of the possibility of contracting Lyme disease after being bitten by a tick, it is equally important to realize that the chance of becoming infected is still quite low. Not all ticks are infected with the causative agent of Lyme disease, a bacterium known as Borrelia burgdorferi. However, depending on where you are in Ontario, 15 to 30% of nymphs and up to 60% of adults may be infected with Borrelia. The infection rate in nymphs may be lower, but the nymphs pose the greatest risk to humans because of their small size and their peak of activity during the early summer when people are enjoying the outdoors more often.

Obviously, avoiding tick bites is the first step to preventing Lyme disease. So how does one do this? The simplest measure is to stay on trails and keep dogs on a leash so that they are less likely to pick up ticks and carry them into the house. Staying out of long grass and not walking through forest litter, where the blacklegged ticks are more likely to be found, and keeping dogs out of the same areas is important because ticks climb the vegetation when they are questing or searching for a host, and brushing against vegetation and through thick leaf litter is where one is most likely to encounter a hungry tick. Wearing light-coloured clothes also helps because the ticks show up well on them and can be removed before they move to bare skin.

After returning from an outing in the woods, doing a personal tick check is one of the most effective methods to prevent tick bites. Ticks often wander around for quite a while before they choose a place to embed. Also, as stated earlier, adult and nymphal ticks must feed on a human for at least 24 hours before Borrelia is transmitted (this is because the bacteria are in the tick’s gut, are stimulated to reproduce and move when blood arrives, and then migrate to the tick’s salivary glands, where they can be transmitted to the host the tick is feeding on). Therefore, personal tick checks and prompt removal of the tick (by grasping its head with tweezers) are very important for preventing Lyme disease.

Although the chance of contracting Lyme disease is still relatively low, it is important to be aware of the signs and symptoms of the disease. Lyme disease is often first identified by the characteristic erythema migrans (a large circular or bull’s eye rash), which appears in 70-80% of cases. The disease can be confirmed through laboratory testing and can be easily treated with antibiotics if diagnosed early.

There is a whole host of information about ticks and Lyme disease on the internet. The Public Health Agency of Canada has a lot of information that can be found at www.phac-aspc.gc.ca/id-mi/tickinfo-eng.php.

The important things to remember, however, are that in order to become infected:

• The tick needs to be a blacklegged tick

• The tick needs to find its way onto the skin

• The tick needs to embed in the skin

• The tick needs to feed for at least 24 hours

• The tick needs to be infected

While you cannot control whether or not the tick is infected, you CAN control each of the other factors. The important thing to remember is to stay alert for the possibility of ticks on you and your pets and to remove them promptly.

What started this story about ticks was my daughter’s Master of

Science thesis defence and exam that took place last week. Her research project dealt with ticks and Lyme disease in the 1000

Islands area. I’m proud to say that she passed the exam and now has her Master of Science degree.

Did you know May is Supervised Visitation Awareness month? It is a month long celebration to recognize and pay tribute to the valuable services offered by Supervised Access Centres not only in Ontario, but internationally. Safe child Access Centres exist to provide a comfortable space for children and their families for parental visitation. Orange ribbons symbolize safety and are worn in support of this campaign across North America.

The Supervised Visitation Network, an organization consisting of over 500 visitation providers worldwide, adopted the Orange Ribbon Campaign in May of 2001, and continues to use the symbol of the orange ribbon throughout May (and each day of the year) to raise awareness about the need and impact of safe child access. This year the Supervised Visitation Network is celebrating the 20th Anniversary of Supervised

Visitation at the upcoming annual conference (www.svnetwork.net/conference)

The Ministry of the Attorney General provides funding for Supervised Access Centres in 52 Court Districts across Ontario. Expanding from 14 initial pilot projects in 1992, there are currently 106 centres in Ontario. Dalhousie Place Supervised Access Centre began serving Brantford and District in 1992, and began providing Supervised Access in the Haldimand Norfolk community in 1999. This service has continued to expand and currently the Haldimand -Norfolk Supervised Access Centres are located at 41 Kent Street North in Simcoe

and at 172 Argyle Street North in Caledonia. Contact the centres by calling 519-428-4838 (ex 32) for more information about our services, volunteering, or the orange ribbon campaign. You can also visit the website at: http://www.execulink.com/~bdsupacc/home.html

These safe, neutral and child focused Access Centres help ensure conflict-free access and safety for both children and parents/family members during visit or exchange times, and have a positive impact on our communities. The Centre is a tool that can help families as they go through difficult and/or transitional times.

By Dave ScottLast Thursday morning at 7am the New Canadian Tire Store in Simcoe officially opened! Mary Taylor (Owner) with her two grandchildren, Sam and Emily, cut the chain to open the store… in a short speech beforehand, Mary thanked her staff for their dedication for all the work they had done in getting the new store open.

At 7am the doors opened and folks poured in,

ready to start their shopping experience within the store.

I remember sitting with Mary and Brian Dikdan (General Manger) almost two years ago when they showed me the plans for the store… I watched as the steel structure went up… I toured the inside a couple months back when it was just a shell… and again a few weeks back when Mary gave me a tour… and now to see it completed!

Congrats… to all involved on a job well done!
