Barry Emslie read a story not long ago in the Hamilton paper… it was about Master Corporal Mike Trauner who had served in Afghanistan and on December 5th 2008 an IED exploded taking both his legs and damaging his left hand. The article went on to talk about his rehab, about rebuilding his life and about the cost to build a home that would be accessible for Mike.

It was while reading this article that Barry decided he wanted to help and get involved in the WALK A MILE IN OUR BOOTS campaign

(www.walkamileinourboots.com). The goal is to raise $250,000 for Mike’s home.

The government and the Military are helping with the home but like I said earlier it is still $250,000 short.

Barry finished the article and knew this was something he wanted to do… he got a hold of the organizer (Brenda Anderson) and signed up for the walk to raise funds for Mike… Oh did I mention the walk was from Stoney Creek to Owen Sound, which is 196km over three days (July 29th to

the 31st)? Ten folks are taking part in a relay format.

I asked Barry why he wanted to do this… and I could see as he talked how he appreciated what all our soldiers do for our country… he felt that he could say thanks in a small way, stand up and help out. For Barry giving up a weekend to walk is a small price to pay… considering what so many others have given for our country.

Barry is your typical local guy born in Hagersville, now living in Waterford… involved in Minor Hockey… works out at Charles Jones… but he understands the need to help others… he has never met Master Corporal Mike Trauner, but that’s not the point… Barry just wants to say thank you!

Whether you’re jumping into the

housing market for the first time or are upsizing or downsizing from your current home, the decisions you make can affect your finances for many years. That’s why it’s so important to take the time to make the right choices for you and your family.

First off, you need to consider if you’re planning to move cities in the next few years for work or lifestyle reasons. If you are, it’s probably a good idea to wait to buy a home in your new location. Beyond the obvious – that hefty mortgage – there are numerous additional costs associated with buying a home, so it’s usually not worth making the investment unless you plan to stay put for a while.

In addition, a short-term purchase makes you more vulnerable to short term price fluctuations – just as it would in the stock market. You don’t want to have jobs lined up and plane tickets booked and then be forced into selling when prices are rock bottom. If you already own a home and are considering relocating across the country and around the world, start researching sale prices in your neighbourhood. In some situations, when markets are strong, it may even be worth selling a couple of years early to lock in high prices. Of course, renting until you move only makes financial sense if you are confident prices in your area are dropping and you have taken into account the costs associated with discharging your mortgage and moving from your home into an apartment.

As a general rule, if you aren’t planning a big move and can comfortably afford it, owning is better than renting because with every mortgage payment you own more of an asset that will likely appreciate over the long term. In contrast, when you rent, your monthly payment goes to your landlord and you don’t get any long-term benefit in exchange.

One of the reasons for the recent real estate meltdown in the United States was the large number of people buying homes with low or no down payments. A larger down payment

immediately increases your equity in your new home and means a smaller mortgage with lower payments. But how much is enough?

The minimum down payment in Canada is 5 per cent. However, when you make a down payment of 20 per cent or more of your home’s purchase price, you get a “conventional mortgage.” This generally means lower interest rates because lenders see you as a lower-risk borrower. If you put down between five per cent and 20 per cent, you’ll have a “high-ratio mortgage” and have to pay for mortgage insurance on top of your regular mortgage payments. Mortgage insurance typically works out to between one per cent and 2.9 per cent of the principal amount of your mortgage.

If your home savings need a boost, don’t forget that first-time home buyers can withdraw up to $25,000 from their Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) to put towards their down payment. Also keep in mind that, if you your mortgage allows it, topping up your payments early in the life of your mortgage makes a big difference to the amount of interest you’ll pay – and you’ll be mortgage-free much sooner.

You’ve made the decision to buy and you have your down payment ready. Now, make home ownership work for you by choosing the type of home that suits your lifestyle. If you’re not keen on yard work, a condominium may be the right solution. You own the inside of your unit and are responsible for its upkeep. Outside your front door are “common elements” that are maintained through your monthly condo fees. Those fees are the price condo owners pay so they don’t have to worry about mowing the lawn or repairing external elements of their home.

On the other hand, with a freehold home – where you own the inside and outside of your building and the property that surrounds it – you can skip the condo fees. In addition, you have much more flexibility to renovate and landscape if you choose. On the downside, you’ll be out there shovelling the snow on blustery January days.

Another way to approach home ownership is to buy a property that includes a self-contained unit you can rent out to someone else. This is a strategy some empty nesters are taking to generate additional income in retirement. You’ll certainly benefit from a regular stream of rental income – but you will also be responsible

for maintenance. So, if the toilet overflows over a holiday weekend, you’ll need to around and pay for the repairs.

Housing markets rise and fall and the price you pay really does depend on “location, location, location.” Across Canada, the Canadian Real Estate Association reports that residential housing prices were up 19 per cent year-over-year in December 2009. But the national average doesn’t mean much if you’re trying to judge the market in a region that saw housing prices stay flat or fall.

The fact is, it’s no easier to “time the market” when buying a home than it is when you’re buying an investment. Usually, the best time to buy is a very personal decision based on whether you’ve saved a significant down payment and can negotiate reasonable interest rates for your mortgage.

As with all other financial decisions, it’s important to explore the pros and cons of owning a home in some depth. Remember that your advisor is in perfect position to discuss options you have to help you integrate home ownership with your other short-term and long-term goals in the context of a comprehensive financial plan.

Training continues on for the Are You Tough Enough? swim and run (10k swim from Pottahawk to Turkey Point followed by a run to Long Point Eco-Adventures on September 4th to benefit Camp Trillium).

This Sunday past, ten swimmers took to the water, eight of which started out from Port Ryerse and swam to Port Dover… 7km. The other two folks, Chris Peters and his sister, Lisa, started their swim from Turkey Point and swam to Port Dover, an amazing 14.5km. Chris swam straight through and completed it in around six hours. That swim was personal for Chris & his sister, as it was in memory of their brother who had passed away last year. Congratulation

Annaleise CarrThis week’s profile focuses on the youngest member of our group… thirteen year old Annaleise Carr who swims like a rocket… the kid can fly… she’s always right at the front of the pack… gliding through the water with a front crawl that is as smooth as silk.

Annaleise has been swimming since she was three years old and loves everything water related, she swims out of the Tillsonburg Club (South Western Aquatics), has competed at the provincial level in both pool and open water.

Voting will soon begin in the final round of BMO’s nationwide “Team of the Week” contest. From August 1st to the 15th, Canadian residents will have the opportunity to vote for one of 15 teams selected as finalists from across Canada. Norfolk County is lucky enough to have one of the 15 teams selected, in the U11 Meat Wagon Golden Eagles. The team that is named BMO Team of the Week Champion will receive prizes including

$125 000 towards refurbishing their local soccer field, and a $5000 donation to their charity of choice.

The Meat Wagon Golden Eagles team, playing as part of the Simcoe and District Youth Soccer Club, was nominated earlier this summer. The team’s nomination may be viewed online at http://community.

Insects, insects everywhere!I’ve been giving a fair bit of thought to insects in the last week or so – mostly bad thoughts! However, there have been a few good ones as well.

For instance, in the late evening, just after dark, there is nothing more delightful than to look out over the lawn and see hundreds of fireflies twinkling and flitting about. I find fireflies (also known as lighting bugs

and as glow-worms when in their larval stage) absolutely fascinating.

Fireflies are not actually flies, but are beetles in the family Lampyridae. The highest number of firefly species is found in warm, humid parts of the world, but obviously we have them here during the summer as well. About 180 species are found in Canada and the US, mostly east of the Rockies. Although some firefly species live in dry regions of the world, many species tend to be found around water, including ponds, streams, marshes, and ditches that may retain moisture during dry

As we go through life, I am always amazed at how things that occur trigger memories of my childhood. Sometimes the memories are so vivid and real… this kinda’ reconnects us to our past… perhaps a smile crosses our face as we pull out an old picture… or hear a voice that reminds us of days gone by.

Last week, I had a visit with Harvey Golden who has a little woodworking shop in his basement… kinda’ his area to putter around in. Harvey is eighty years old but you wouldn’t know it… he looks much younger... which he attributes to clean living, never drank or smoked. He served in the Korean War, which he prefers not to talk about, he says it changed him, seeing so much death and destruction… he was twenty-three at the time and had spent the first twenty-two years on his parents

farm in Maxwell, just north of Cornwall.

Born in a log cabin, farm life was what he knew… and from what I gathered it holds a special place in his life. Times were not easy in the 1930’s and their small dairy farm barely got by… going in to town was special… money was scarce, so bartering was what you did.

I could see that his passion has always been woodworking and music. To this day he enjoys both. In 1957 Harvey moved to Simcoe and in 1958 he started working for Union Gas (where he worked for 35 years before retiring). He and his wife, Rosalie, raised two boys and a daughter.

His passion for woodworking guided him to making lamps, clocks and plaques… not to sell but just for himself. In the early 1970’s he

started on a journey of one project that he continues to this day. You see, he used his woodworking skills and started recreating the farm where he grew up… first, just a hay wagon... then the log cabin… it all started to come back, he just kept building it over the years… his passion displayed in each piece he created, the fine craftsmanship, the hours rolling on… the drive to build comes and goes as his memory reflects on his past. When his wife passed away, Harvey found peace back in the wood shop, the farm growing to the point where his creation now has a house, a log cabin (914 stones in the fireplace), wood shed, outhouse, driving shed, barn (1829 shingles on the roof handmade), milk house, two silos, a chicken house, hay mower, furrow plough, hay wagon, milk wagon, wheel wagon, manure spreader and

of course a bob sled and a couple of figurines.

The whole farm is something to behold and it holds a special place for Harvey… memoirs from a time long ago… a childhood… a simpler time…

Harvey is a humble man who doesn’t want for much… he enjoys his friends and family… takes a few trips (he’s headed for Alaska soon) and follows his passions… did I mention he’s a nice guy as well! For some reason, I think he may just add a few more pieces to the farm… maybe another memory will be stirred and the farm will have another piece… and if not, that’s ok… because every time Harvey heads to the woodworking shop in the basement… a little bit of that kid in him comes back.

Long Point Eco Adventures in St. Williams has added live, outdoor theatre to their array of activities and experiences. The pilot show is a unique, original and truly “Norfolk” production titled “The Witch Doctor of Walsingham.”

The show begins in the brand new amphitheatre at Eco Adventures, following which the audience is taken on a hike through the very same forests that spawned the myths and true stories of one of Norfolk’s first settlers, Dr. John Troyer, his family, and his neighbour Jennie Elizabeth McMichael. Myths uncovered include the Storm Hag of Presque Isle, the Baldoon Mystery, and Troyer’s most famous witch encounter, as well as several stories about Troyer’s life and the people

closest to him (Google this stuff – it’s fascinating! His farm is still known today as Troyer’s Flats; his tombstone is still in existence near Port Rowan; relics from Troyer’s life and legendary witch hunts can be seen today at the Eva Brook Donly Museum in Simcoe).

Set as a psychology mystery, the story winds through the woods as it winds through John Troyer’s life. It makes new speculations on the relationships of these characters, as well as motivations for his actions and the many colourful stories connected to him.

Everything in this story is true. Even the things that didn’t happen.

Mike Chwastiak, the show’s

principle writer and lead actor, heads up a troupe that includes myself and some of the area’s most notable performers: Claire Senko, Heather Chwastiak and Charly Buck.

And Lust! Uwe Meyer’s Dating By The Book, Hits The Lighthouse Stage August 2nd To 20th.

Courtesy of the Lighthouse Festival TheatreOne of Playwright Uwe Meyer’s favourite plays, out of the thirty he has had produced, is his romantic comedy Dating By The Book.

Director Patricia Vanstone reports “ We’ve had great fun exploring Uwe’s tale of brave Carolyn in her step by step quest for romance”.

Carolyn is played by Helen Taylor who conjures up the courage to date Herbert, who is played by Adrian Griffin, after reading this ‘How-To’ guide book on dating written by her cousin Evelyn.

Evelyn, played by Mary Harvey, mentors Carolyn throughout the process of getting back into the dating pool and Mark, played by Jason Jazrawy, is the neighbour who decides to have some fun ‘helping’ Carolyn out on her first date after her divorce.

Derek Ritschel, Lighthouse Artistic Director says “ We couldn’t have cast Dating By The Book any better. This is the first time all these performers have been on the Lighthouse stage and they have a wealth of experience behind them. They had exactly what I was looking for and we’ve been howling at every rehearsal.”

couple of lake session with the Are You Tough Enough? swimmers and knew some day she would do the swim. The 7km swim on Sunday was her longest to date… and she sailed through it.

I asked her why the swim and helping to raise funds for Camp Trillium was important to her. The answer was one of pure honesty… simply put; she doesn’t like to see kids hurt!

periods. They are mostly found in rotting wood or other forest litter or at the edges of streams and ponds.

Not all fireflies are bioluminescent, that is, able to produce light. A firefly's light is turned on or off by controlling the air supply to the luminescent organs. The chemical luciferin is instantly converted to light in the presence of a specific enzyme and oxygen. Fireflies produce green, yellow or orange light depending on the particular species. The production of light in fireflies is very efficient. Almost 100 per cent of the firefly’s energy is given off as light. Compare this to a normal light bulb, which gives off just 10 per cent of its energy as light and wastes the remaining 90 per cent as heat.

The question, of course, is why do fireflies glow? In the larval stage, it is thought that the glow-worms use the light as a warning signal to let predators know they taste bad. All firefly larvae are bioluminescent, but not all adults are. Those are do glow, however, use the light to attract mates. The signals can

vary from a continuous glow to a single flash to a pattern of flashes. Female fireflies have been shown to prefer certain characteristics of a male's photic signal (such as increased flash rate) and respond preferentially to males that possess these "sexy" signal components. Males generally fly about flashing and hoping to catch the interest of a female who is usually perched on vegetation near the ground. When her interest is caught, she will respond at a fixed time delay after the last male’s flash and a flash dialogue may result until the two find each other. I’m not sure how that works when there are hundreds and even thousands of fireflies flitting about, but obviously it does.

As a side note to my research on fireflies, I wondered why the mother firefly wasn’t very happy. Perhaps because her children weren’t very bright?

That was one of the “good” thoughts I had about insects last week. The bad came after I went swimming in a freshwater lake for the first time in several years. I have always reacted badly to any insect bites and, unfortunately, I seem to attract

them more than other people. Most people who head outdoors with me don’t even bother with insect repellent because they know if I’m there, the insects will come to me!

As a child, whenever I went swimming I would get a rash that I later discovered was called “swimmer’s itch.” Swimmer's itch, also called cercarial dermatitis (SIR-care-ee-uhl DER-muh-TIGHT-iss), is a temporary but very itchy skin rash caused by an allergic reaction to small worm-like parasites called schistosomes (Shiss-toe-soams.) These parasites are not visible to the naked eye so swimmers don’t know they are coming into contact with them.

Schistosomes spend their life cycle as parasites in the bodies of water snails and in the blood stream of aquatic mammals, ducks or other waterfowl. Schistosome larvae leave their snail host and swim around near the surface of the water, intending to come into contact with birds and certain mammal hosts. Larvae sometimes mistakenly get on to the skin of people swimming or wading, instead of aquatic mammals or waterfowl.

After a person leaves the water, these larvae start to burrow under the skin. However, these larvae cannot survive in humans and die almost immediately after they burrow into the skin. It is the allergic reaction to these tiny larvae under the skin of some people that causes the itchy rash.

Despite knowing all this, last week I succumbed to the lure of the lake on one of the hottest days of the summer. Unfortunately, I now know that I am still susceptible to swimmer’s itch and I’ll use the shower or the bathtub on the next really hot day. You can believe me when I say that I’m having very bad thoughts about this insect now!
