By Dave ScottEvery year around this time, you will notice Norfolk General Hospital (NGH) Volunteers handing out little tags. You see them in the local stores, drop in a donation, they smile, and hand you a small tag on a string. Did you ever kinda wonder what the donation went to? This year I was invited to the hospital to chat with Mary Kokus who headed up the tag drive for the past

twelve years, and Iris Smith who is heading up the campaign this year.Mary has been a volunteer at the hospital for over twenty-eight years and tells me her daughters have followed in her footsteps, volunteering at the hospital as well. Iris has spent thirteen years helping out and loves to keep busy. Both ladies agree that helping out at the hospital ensures that it will be there down the road to aid others in our community. Events like Tag Day raise funds for new equipment. The funds this year will go towards paying for a new Chemistry

Analyzer for in the lab. The role of this piece of equipment is to analyze results for heart, liver, pancreas and kidney functions. This is a vital piece of equipment for the hospital, performing 65% of the entire lab tests in the hospital. The unit runs about 180,000 tests a year.So far the volunteers have raised $50,000 of the $90,000 needed to pay for the Chemistry Analyzer. Look for TAG DAY in Simcoe and Delhi on May 3rd, and in Port Dover and Waterford on June 21st.

The weather was perfect on Saturday, April 27th as several members of the Jarvis Lions Club put a new roof on the cabin the

Club sponsors at Rainbow Lake Camp Trillium near Waterford. A huge thank you to the attendees at our recent Annual Show who

purchased candy during the intermissions and also to US Steel who made a very generous donation to make this possible. The camp will

be opening soon and the kids in the Jarvis Lions cabin will be kept warm and dry for many years to come.New

Waterloo–Wellington, was down our way last week and stopped by to present local renowned artist, Vic Gibbons, with a plaque.Sandy explained that for the past thirty years, Vic has always donated one of his works to help

the Lung Association with their various fundraising events.Vic was all smiles receiving the plaque and vowed to Sandy that he would keep helping as long as he can.Every year, Vic’s painting has been one of the top items to raise the most funds by way of live or silent auction. Vic has even attended the

annual golf tournament, Phyllis Gretzky Memorial Golf Classic a few times.Congrats Vic on such a wonderful tradition you have carried on for the past thirty years!Watch next week, for more on the Lung Association’s upcoming events.

By Jen Van NettenThis past Saturday, 19 volunteers came together with one purpose, to clean up our environment. We collected approximately 15 lbs of recycled material and almost 100 lbs in garbage along 1.21 km of the Turkey Point Beach as well as the Turkey Point play park (thanks to the Matzig family from Walsh).

The Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup is a joint conservation partnership between the Vancouver Aquarium and WWF. I went to the www.ShorelineCleanup.ca web site and found some pretty cool facts.12% of Canada's surface is covered by water - in the form of lakes, rivers and streams. Water quality is affected by the toxins emitted from litter. Organisms often attach to litter as it flows through water systems, causing invasive species to damage the sensitive balance of the ecosystem. Wildlife entangled in litter such as plastic bags, six-pack rings, ribbon or food wrappers, can have their movements restricted,

be injured or even eventually drown, suffocate or starve. Animals like sea turtles often mistake plastic bags for jellyfish and swallow them. This clogs their digestive tracts, leading to starvation and death.Shoreline litter is one of the biggest threats to our lakes, rivers, oceans and waterways. In 2011, approx 90% of the trash removed from our shorelines came from smoking and shoreline recreational related activities.PS. FROM THE HUB… Thanks Jen for all the clean up your group did. It reminds us to all be more aware of helping to protect our environment!

By Dave ScottDr. Dave Horton has taken his advertising campaign for this year’s MS Walk in a new direction. As many of you have seen, his vehicle is full of decals promoting this year’s event, which will take place May 5th. Registration will start at 8:30 am and the walk itself will get under way at 10 am. The usual cast and crew will be on hand, Gerry from MyFm will be hosting, Randy Halmo from Klassy FM will be spinning the music, and Cross Fit ADURO & Fitness Centre (AKA, IRONMASTERS) will be providing the warm-up. All in all, a great start to the day, and of course when you finish the walk, food will be provided by M&M Meat Shops, Weston and Breyers.A new partner in this year’s walk is the Mandarin, which is helping out on a provincial scale. Our local MS Society Chapter that Dave heads up, is looking to top last year’s total of $36,000. They are already reporting that the number of participants is up over last year. The walk has moved from April to May in hopes of better weather for all the folks who come out. This year marks the 13th walk for the MS Society. The funds are needed now

more than ever to help local MS patients and to further research in this field. Dave explains that the MS Society as a whole is talking more and more with MS patients, asking where they believe the monies should be targeted. They hope to develop a stronger

focus for the organization and create better equal access opportunities for all MS patients.Lace up the shoes and head for the MS Walk on May 5th at Holy Trinity High School… help support those battling MS!

By George Pond The year was I believe 1978. We were not "Birders" at the time when our friends the Overbaughs, also non birders, suggested that we go to Point Pelee to witness the spring migration. We did and arrived at what is commonly called "A Fallout". Fallout occurs when migrating birds are hit with a sudden storm that forces them to earth. If this happens when they are over water they must continue until they hit land or drown. This can result in thousands of birds grounded and tired out. Such was the case that year. We thought that it was the norm but I have never seen such a massive fallout since. On that first day we were introduced to dozens of species of birds that I had never seen. One was the Blackburnian Warbler, argued by some as the most beautiful of all the Wood Warblers. They are not rare birds and a few do nest in Norfolk County but most nest further north. I remember that day watching a

mixed flock of warblers in a tree and commenting out loud, "There’s another Blackburnian." There were dozens of birders looking at the same flock and immediately one chap went racing down the trail yelling, "Myrtle, Myrtle, come quick a Blackburnian." They were from the western States and had never seen one of the stunning birds.Blackburnians migrate through Norfolk from early to late May. Try the banding station on Old Cut Blvd. at Long Point. In fact this is one of the best places in Ontario, especially for new Birders as you often get to see a great variety of migrating birds as they are being banded. I photographed this Blackburnian, on a bare branch while walking one May day in the Long Point Provincial Park. Vic Gibbons has changed the Oak tree on which it sat to a White Birch and has eliminated many distracting background limbs. The subtle colours of the clouds helps to bring out that fiery orange throat.

Big SplaSh Of The Week!

Roulston’s Pharmacy moves to newly constructed Wellness Centre, one block east of current Simcoe Mall locationRoulston’s Pharmacy, an independently owned and operated pharmacy group in Norfolk County, and a part of the I.D.A. banner program, today announced it has begun the move to its new Wellness Centre. The company unveiled its plan to develop a healthcare centre for Norfolk County last spring, and the developer broke ground in the fall of 2012. Roulston’s location in the Simcoe Mall was committed to staying within the Mall until the existing lease expired, but is now preparing for the re-location to the new site being developed by local entrepreneurs, the Ferras

Family. None of the other three Roulston’s stores, including the flagship store in Simcoe’s core, will be affected by the move, as these stores will remain in their current locations, and operate under the same business hours. In addition, Mike Heirwegh, Blair Snow, Mark Stephens, and Krish Menon continue to be the independent owners of the entire Roulston’s I.D.A. Pharmacy group. The decision by Roulston’s ownership to re-locate to a new development was based on their assessment of customer needs. Patients will be provided necessary medical services, such as access to Physicians and other professional services, within one location. The tradition Roulston’s Pharmacy

has of offering local ownership and personal customer service to residents of Norfolk County was begun in 1933. As the company approaches its 80th anniversary, it will bring those years of experience to the medical community with its new Wellness Centre.“It is with great excitement that we announce we will soon open the doors of our new Roulston’s Wellness Centre to the residents of Simcoe and Norfolk County,” said Mark Stephens, Co-Owner, Roulston’s Pharmacy. “I have been overseeing all aspects of our new project from start to finish, and believe that upon its completion our customers will be well served by this accessible and modern facility. With the convenient

location of the Centre at the corner of the Queensway and Donly Drive, patients from across Norfolk County will have access to a centrally located, top notch medical and wellness centre.” With five of the eight available Physicians’ Suites, designed by Quartek Group Inc., an engineering firm specializing in medical design, already earmarked for local Doctors Weber, Tschirhart, Williamson, Martin-Godelie, and McConnell, Roulston’s is optimistic that the development will also attract new physicians to the area.Working with the help of Carolyn Beam, Physician Liaison at Norfolk General Hospital, Stephens is confident that the remaining three Physicians’ Suites will be filled

By Claire SenkoAfter much indecision on Mother Nature’s part, and a few last-minute temper tantrums from Winter the Grouch, it appears spring has finally sprung! And I’m dancin’! I’ll admit it here and now: Spring is my Christmas. From its first subtle hope-whispers hinting up through frost-stunned soil and pulsing along barren branches, to its exuberant life-announcements and surprise green-bursts, along with every cheeky and dazzling miracle-gift in-between, springtime fills me with childlike wonder… In fact, increasingly so as I get older

and realize more and more that the best and most beautiful things in life are indeed free. In the spirit of unabashed beauty-broadcasts (May I ever be relegated to the role of making such declarations!) I proclaim an upcoming delight from my little music & art world at the Waterford Old Town Hall. This Sunday, May 5th, Canada’s West Coast roots music sensation The Bills will bring their renowned brand of world-infused folk music to the Waterford Old Town Hall as part of our 2013 Concert Series. We’re excited to present this acclaimed quintet of multi-instrumentalists and talented vocalists in concert, and offer the community

an entertaining-for-all-ages experience. Infectiously funny, exotic and creative, these pros make on-stage magic. Touted for their “instrumental virtuosity, lush vocal arrangements, exuberant live performances, evocative songwriting, and refreshingly innovative interpretations of traditional tunes from around the globe,” The Bills have carved their place in Canadian music history. They’ve toured the world, received some much-deserved Juno attention, just released a brand new album called Yes Please!… and are bringing all that excitement and energy to our little X on the map in just a few days. Tickets are $25 / $30 at the door; for students- $15

/ $20 at the door, and are available at Cottage North in Port Dover, Serafina Good Food in Simcoe, The Old Town Hall in Waterford, and online at www.ticketscene.ca/oth. For a breath of fresh air this weekend, come see what the OTH Concert Series buzz is all about, and take in the only full band act on our slate. I hope to see you there, and perhaps wish you a very Merry Springmas! Till then, enjoy every burst of new life around you, and celebrate the season!Claire Senko is the Program Director of the Old Town Hall in Waterford. Opening the event will be singer/song writer Rachel Heart and guitar player Will Macaulay. Join them in a 30 minute set with a warm musical updraft of steady rhythm, bright melody and vast soundscape. They will captivate all with

Heart's own "Hawk Love" the title song for the CRC National Bird Campaign. Following the musical performance is a 45 minute birds of prey free-flight show that will include hawks, owls, a falcon and an eagle. Enjoy these magnificent creatures up-close and personal. Learn about conservation, culture, natural history, local

populations and our National Bird Campaign. Friday, May 3, at the Port Dover Community Centre - 1st Show: 6 pm, 2nd Show: 8:30 pm. Doors open at 5:30 pm Admission: $5 at the door. Proud SPonSorS of

Our Farms... Our Families

By Haldimand-Norfolk Junior FarmersJunior Farmers is a not-for-profit organization, which is run by youth for youth. Our mission is “to build future rural leaders through self-help and community betterment.” Over the past few years Haldimand-Norfolk has participated in the Norfolk County Fair and donated over $10,000 to charities in the Haldimand-Norfolk region. This year, to give back to the community, the club will be running a scholarship for youth in both Haldimand and Norfolk counties. The scholarship will be awarded to two individuals showing outstanding community involvement and who are enrolling in postsecondary education for the fall 2013 season. This particular person does not need to have a connection with Junior Farmers or 4-H and the scholarship is not limited to agriculturally related programs. Any graduating student who shows exemplary involvement in the community, and is in good academic standing is encouraged to apply. There is one scholarship in Haldimand County and one in Norfolk County worth $1,500 each. Application forms can be found at the local high schools. Those interested must apply by June 1st by sending an application form to

[email protected] or mailing a copy to 69 Highland Blvd, Caledonia, ON N3W 1H4. Our local club spends time together doing different social things such as small get-togethers, bowling, or bingo nights. We are always enthusiastic to accept new members from ages 15-30 and our schedule for events coming up include: a movie night in May, Strawberry social after our June meeting, and camping in July. Our next meeting is on May 23rd in Haldimand County after visiting the Hagersville Food-bank. Our Facebook group details various events.Junior Farmers throughout the province also hosts different social events, agricultural workshops and other events to promote leadership. Over the past few months we have been a part of different provincial events where many clubs/counties get together and have some fun. We were just recently champions at Winter Games, a weekend dedicated to sports, outdoors activities and fun! We played soccer, floor hockey, volleyball and basketball to name a few. We also participated in woodsman competitions like building a fire, throwing wood and even axes!! As well, our Annual General Meeting and conference (March Conference) was held at Ramada Inn in London. This is a weekend event where speakers come to speak on various topics; this year included financial

planning, inspirational speakers, and even the MPP of Lambton Kent Middlesex. We were entertained by a magician and a hypnotist throughout the weekend as well! The Junior Farmers Association of Ontario also supports a provincial charity as a whole every year and we vote on this charity at every

March Conference. This year, Ontario Farmland Trust was named as our provincial charity who believes in preserving farmland and the associated features in the countryside and to research and educate to further the preservation of these lands for the benefit of current and future generations.

as they are completed. “Medical students are interested in coming to an area such as this to practice upon graduation, and being able to provide resources such as a brand new facility and the opportunity to collaborate with experienced medical professionals is invaluable,” Stephens commented. While work on the Wellness Centre is ongoing, with improvements to the development as spring progresses, Roulston’s Pharmacy will move into its new space May 2nd. The Pharmacy will remain open at the current Simcoe Mall location until 6 pm on May 1st to fulfill any medication requirements, and will open the following day, May 2nd, at 9 am at the new Donly Drive Wellness Centre. It is anticipated that physicians will begin to occupy their office space during the month of June, and additional services such as laboratory space and ElderCare Home Care are expected to follow.Stephens noted that the owners of Roulston’s “believe that Norfolk

By MARG WERDEN Spring nature activitiesSo much to do, so little time! But first, a sad update to my nest-watching project. I was away on vacation for a week and expected to come back to see a nest full of eggs on my return. As a result, I was surprised to see the nest was still empty and there was no activity around it. On closer inspection of the patio under the nest, I found some Robin’s feathers and have come to the conclusion that some predator killed the bird. Who killed Cock Robin? (Although, realistically speaking, it was probably a female and not a male Robin!)Hiking presentationNorfolk County and Bernie Solymár, Executive Director of Nature’s Calling Environmental Education, are joining forces to present a talk about hiking in Norfolk County. “Exploring the Long Point Watershed: A Family Guide to Nature Trails and Paddles” will take place on Wednesday, May 1 in the Norfolk Room at the Simcoe Recreation Centre from 7 to 8:30 pm. The presentation will include information about the many scenic nature trails and paddles in the area with a focus on family activities. Participants will learn about a new eco-activity guide that is being created to “encourage parents and children to enjoy our local natural areas in a fun and stimulating way”. The eco-activity guide will include simple, fun, hands-on outdoor activities for the entire family. This is a free event, but advance registration is suggested by calling customer service (519) 426-8866 ext 2233. Family Nature HikeTo experience one of the many hiking trails available in the area, join Nature’s Calling Nature Educator, Colleen Dale, for a spring walk in Backus Woods on Saturday, May 11 at 10 am. Look under logs for salamanders, identify frogs and birds by their song, and learn about the carpets of spring flowers on the

forest floor. Meet at the entrance to Backus Woods off the Third Concession and don’t forget your rubber boots and insect repellent!Teaching and Learning with Monarch ButterfliesA two-day workshop for teachers and anyone involved in environmental education is being co-sponsored by Nature’s Calling Environmental Education and the Long Point Region Conservation Authority, Toronto Region Conservation Authority and the Monarch Teachers Network at the Education Centre at Backus Heritage Conservation Area on August 13 and 14.The workshop will provide teachers with the knowledge, skills and resources to raise Monarch butterflies in the classroom and teach students about the life cycle of this species that is in decline. Each fall, Monarch butterflies from Canada and the United States begin a 3,000 to 4,000 km migration to overwintering sites in Mexico and California. This incredible journey provides a unifying theme to teach essential skills across the curriculum in science, literacy, geography, and

other areas. Unfortunately, the number of Monarchs making this annual journey to their winter refuge in Mexico dropped by 59 per cent last year, falling to the lowest level over the past 20 years. There are now only one-fifteenth as many Monarch butterflies as there were just over a decade ago.One of the possible causes for the population decline was believed to be illegal logging in the Mexican wintering grounds, but this has been reduced considerably and is no longer thought to be the main problem. Agricultural practices, especially the use of pesticides that kill off the butterflies’ main food source, milkweed, are perhaps the biggest problem faced by these butterflies. The loss of milkweed in the Monarchs' summering areas in the north can make it hard for the butterflies to lay eggs, and for the offspring that do hatch to find enough food to grow to maturity. In addition, unusually hot or dry weather can kill eggs, meaning fewer adult butterflies. For butterflies that reach adulthood, unusual cold or lack of water and/or tree cover in Mexico can mean they're less likely to survive the

winter. The workshop will include hands-on experience in raising Monarchs, a field trip to learn about Monarch habitat, an opportunity to tag Monarchs, and an understanding of the stewardship needed to assist this species and its importance in Mexican culture. The $95 (plus taxes) registration includes instruction by experienced teachers, inquiry-based, hands-on learning activities, Monarch rearing equipment and curriculum-oriented classroom lessons. To register, call Nancy McGee at (289) 268-3911 or visit the website at http://www.monarchteacher.ca/workshops/mtnworkshop11.dot.
