FROM THE EDITOR:

FROM THE PRESIDENT: John James

John James is right about how many shows we’ve done this summer. They have been so much fun, even the wet Father’s Day show at Great Wolf. It was awesome to see how many cars and people showed up to support such a great cause, The Big Brothers and Big Sisters fund. We also helped with donations to the Elks Therapy Fund and 2 other shows that raised money to support scholarships for mechanics’ education. The huge turnout for Porsches on the Pier was such a success to not only our club but to the local Rotary Club that sponsors Arts in Action for the City of Port Angeles. And if you haven’t experienced the fun this club has to offer, be sure you read all the articles in the Nor’Wester this time. It’s jam packed with the exciting summer we’ve had! On that same note, this summer is flying by. The weather here has been mostly Porsche friendly. But considering our weather, we aren’t the only states with garage queens. I just returned from vacation in Georgia and Florida only to have spotted 8 Porsches in 7 days. Surprisingly, only one of the eight was a 911. Since the weather was so good, I just thought I would be inundated with the sight of Porsches, you know one on every corner...it just didn’t happen. All that says to me is that if you have too many dry days, you don’t appreciate the feeling of anticipating the days to come for that well deserved opportunity to drive your car! We have all felt it when we have survived days and days of wet weather. But if the weather were like the South, I’d probably use mine as a daily driver. Lastly, I am searching for anyone that has some MS Publisher skills, although if you’d like to help me with the Nor’Wester, I’d be glad to teach you. I am trying desperately to continue my work as your editor, but it is grown by leaps and bounds and is making it difficult to keep up at this pace by myself. If you would like to help out, you can find my contact information on the previous page.

If you have not taken in any car shows in 2010, you have missed some great Porsches--and some pretty fair examples of other brands, hot rods, customs, etc. The Olympic Peninsula Region has been well represented and I was especially proud of the huge turnouts at two of our events.

First, thirty-six of your favorite brand were at POPPA--Porsches on the Pier at Port Angeles. Not only was there a great contingent of 911's, Boxsters and Caymans, but three 356's, Gene Stahl's 911"outlaw", Christian Polyak's fabulous 912, Dick Brown's newly acquired 944 Turbo, the crowd favorite, Grace and Warren Stoner's orange crush Boxster, and one very rare, very fast, very red GT2 owned by Steve and Debi Wood. This was a great event, with lots of art exhibits, chow, music, and in my case a great run home down RT 101 to Shelton. Truly, these roads are what Porsches are made for---and radar detectors!

Second, the Gig Harbor Cruise the Narrows Car Show at the Uptown Shopping Center on July 31st. Porsche was the featured marque and our vehicles were prominently displayed right as customers drove in. There were over 200 vehicles in attendance and we had twenty four of Stuttgart's finest on display! My thanks to Jack Sutton, a member of the Cruisers and OPR for helping us to secure the Marque position at the show. Also, to John Hogan, owner of Uptown, for his praise of our attendance, promptness in showing up, the quality of our vehicles, and for the Porsche owners staying with their vehicles to answer questions. If you did not see our membership chair, Gloria Mellon, in action corralling non-OPR Porsche owners into our marque position, you missed a real sales pro in action. She even found the only Panamera in Gig Harbor!! Your club members fared well in the trophy department with Alex Raphael's Yellow 993 Twin Turbo taking best import, Bill Elwell taking best 1980's for the second consecutive year and your President winning the President's award given out by Cruiser President, Travis Leonard.

There are several shows left, so polish up that icon and join us for a great time!

Sincerely,

John James, Exalted Ruler (aka OLP President)

TECHNOLOGY ON THE ROAD By Bill Elwell

The other day I was reading an article in a car magazine that talked about all sorts of different automotive coolants. Some were green, some red, some orange, pink, blue, and so on. WHAT? Whatever happened to good old green antifreeze? These days every automaker specifies a unique coolant. Seems like that green stuff I remember is a thing of the past. And to make matters worse, manufacturers have been inconsistent with their use of color coding so you can’t use the color of the coolant to determine what type of coolant you need for your car. Oh, you’ll notice that I use the term coolant. That’s what the industry calls the stuff now. And I had an aunt that married a guy named Dr. Victor Frees. So Auntie Frees has a special place in my heart, not to be shared with automotive coolant. The coolant in your car serves no less than 4 functions. We all know that the coolant is not supposed to freeze. An ethylene glycol based coolant mixed 50/50 with water will remain liquid down to at least -30° Fahrenheit. The second job is to raise the boiling point of the coolant above the boiling point of water. An ethylene glycol based coolant won’t boil until its temperature exceeds 275° Fahrenheit. Third, there are additives in the coolant that inhibit corrosion of the metal engine parts. Finally, the coolant also lubricates the water pump. Let me make a quick note about our pets. I’ve already talked about ethylene glycol which is the primary component of most coolant today. It’s very toxic and it is supposed to taste rather sweet. Pets evidently love to drink the stuff if they find it. If you’re concerned about the toxic nature of ethylene glycol there are formulas available that use propylene glycol which is less toxic. Regardless of whether it is ethylene or propylene glycol, a 50/50 mixture with water yields a higher boiling point and a lower freezing point than the glycol by itself. That’s why you’re always instructed to mix the stuff 50/50 with water. Let’s get back to the colors. I’ll cover the four basic types of coolants. It would be crazy to try and cover all the individual variations out there. The good old green or yellow coolant from the old days has been used universally for years. The

silicate and phosphate corrosion inhibitors worked very well with iron and aluminum engine parts. This stuff is typically good for 3 years or 30,000 miles. Organic Acid Technology (OAT) coolants replace the silicate and phosphate corrosion inhibitors with a variety of organic acids. The organic acids last longer so you’ll see OAT coolants rated for 5 years/150,000 miles. OAT provides long lasting protection for aluminum and iron. But some OAT coolants do not react well with copper or brass (older radiators). OAT coolants are a different color that’s so consumers know that it is different than the traditional green coolant (although this isn’t always true). GM’s Dex-Cool is orange. VW & Audi use an OAT coolant that is pink. Porsche has used green or pink at various times over the years since they started using OAT coolants. Hybrid Organic Acid Technology (HOAT) coolants use a different set of organic acids than OAT coolants and they add a little silicate into the mix as well. This stuff is sometimes referred to as G-05. HOAT coolants are typically rated for 5 years/150,000 miles. Finally there are universal coolants from manufacturers like Prestone and Peak. These are formulated to go into nearly any coolant system with nearly any existing coolant. With the exception of the universal coolant, there is a complex set of rules about which of these you can and can’t mix. I’ll make it simple. Unless you’re using a universal coolant, don’t try mixing the stuff. What coolant do you use if you need to top off your car? I’ll give you four answers. The first strategy for choosing a coolant is to simply go to the dealer and buy whatever is in your car already. It won’t be cheap, especially for Porsche owners. I’ve seen prices over $50 per gallon for the genuine Porsche coolant. Luckily we rarely need to buy it but once in the life of your car. So, paying an extra $10 or $20 for coolant breaks down to a dollar or two per year. That’s cheap insurance. The second strategy is to find a non-Porsche brand coolant approved by Porsche. In the time I had to write this article, I was unsuccessful at finding such a list. I did find that most of the Porsche parts places sold Pentosin brand coolants as original equipment replacements. The third angle is to figure out if Porsche uses an OAT or HOAT coolant and to buy a compatible coolant from one of the many coolant manufacturers. Again, I was unable to determine exactly what technology coolant Porsche is using or when they switched from using silicates to using organic acids. Finally, you can turn to the universal coolants. I’ve not read any horror stories about using them. For a guy like me with cars ranging from the 80’s through 2004, it sure saves shelf space. I hope you learned something new about coolants. Thanks for reading and you can write me at [email protected].

TRACK & RACING INFO by Jeff Smith

I haven’t been to any of the recent autocrosses and track days so can’t report on them. However if you are interested you can do what I do - follow them online by checking results posted by the various clubs on their websites, sign up for the local email lists and read the online forums. From my distant perspective, the local scene appears to be healthy and decently attended. I’ve read there are some restrictions at the Bremerton site on how some of the pavement can be used for autocrosses. Sounds like it impacts course design a little but they are still having good autocrosses. I miss autocross and hope to get back to fitting a few in around 944 Cup racing but I’m finding it is very hard to do both. Maybe next year will be less demanding. As far as the 944 Cup racing series goes, nine rounds are completed and there are three more to go. By the time this article appears the two rounds at Bremerton will be history and just one 944 Cup race will be left, Sept 11/12 in Portland. The final race of our season in late October at the new Oregon Raceway Park was canceled. We were looking forward to our first racing at that new track but the SCCA race officials decided it was too risky financially to hold a race that late in the year at a new and remote track. They were afraid that not enough drivers would attend to cover the expenses and that not enough volunteers would make the trek out there for the weekend after already having worked four race weekends that month. So our series will consist of 12 rounds with each driver’s best 10 finishes counting towards the championship. Looks like Mark Lacombe may take the title away from two time champion Lyle Eddy. I haven’t crunched the numbers to see if Mark has it locked up, but he has a healthy lead. The rest of us have three more chances to improve our standings. Only two cars made it to the Spokane 944 Cup race in July. Mike Adams conveniently scheduled work for himself there that week and Mark Lacombe also made the long tow. Tim and Mike tried, but their motorhome broke down along the way and they had to abort. All the rest of us had commitments, lack of funds, or other excuses to not tow 750 miles to race in the heat of July. This was the first time we were to race with the International Conference of Sports Car Clubs, also known as ICSCC or just ‘Conference’ for short. They are the other race sanctioning body besides SCCA in the Northwest. This event was supposed to be a practice for our challenge race with the BMWs two weeks later in Seattle (more about that later), and a chance for us to try out their racing events. Mark won both rounds but Mike earned some notoriety and definitely got the ICSCC’s attention. Mike is a rookie this year and is already driving pretty fast. However his aggressive style gets him off track regularly, with all kinds of entertaining episodes of spinouts and detours off the pavement. In the Saturday race, Mike had contact with another car (their fault) while passing and was spun off track resulting in front end damage and the radiator drain plug

getting broken. Fortunately Mark just happened to have a spare drain plug and they made trackside repairs in time for Sunday. Mike spun out in Sunday’s race and was t-boned hard by a following car. The other car was not driveable. Mike’s car had heavy damage, but he was able to limp back to the pits and make rudimentary repairs in time for the Seattle race. Next up, in only two weeks, was our race at Pacific Raceways, again with ICSCC. We raced in our usual class, ITS, for our series points, but we also had a special race for fun. What was started just as an informal challenge race between our 944’s and the BMW 325’s actually evolved into a special race on Saturday night called “German Touring Car Challenge”. So we were still racing the BMW’s but they opened it up to all German cars. Wow, what a great race! Word got out and we had a lot of SCCA racers come over just for this race. A total of 54 cars entered, including some very fast cars like Jim Walsh’s Porsche GT3 RSR and a couple surprisingly fast BMW’s. There were various other Porsches and BMW’s and a few VW’s. We had nine 944’s verses about twenty five BMW 325’s. They weigh less and have more horsepower so they motor by us on the straights. We can out handle them but they have the overall advantage. With all those cars on track it was busy, but very fun with lots of close racing the entire 30 minutes. The ICSCC officials were impressed that we had 54 cars go out and 54 cars come back in with no major incidents. At the trophy presentations everyone was enthusiastically in favor of doing it again next year. I can’t wait! As this was all just for fun, the trophies were small, medium and large jars of sauerkraut with various sayings like “Looks good in Lederhosen” printed on them. In our ITS class race, I was hit by one of the BMWs, more like a sideswipe that knocked me pretty good going into turn one. I stayed on track and finished the race. I had to buff a lot of blue and gray paint off the side of my car, but very minor denting. The BMW racers and us 944 Cup racers agreed we want to do more races with them. So hopefully we will have an expanded schedule next year with more races in Seattle and maybe in Spokane. Round 8 was the following weekend after Seattle, so only

On June 12th, we met at the Gig

Harbor McDonald's around noon to travel to the LeMay Museum in Spanaway. This was our annual visit to not only the public museum at Marrimont, but also a tour of Nancy Lemay's property, which houses an extensive collection of vehicles and memorabilia. This year we were joined by members of the Glass Odyssey Corvette Club of Bremerton and they turned out in some terrific Vettes. We got off to an interesting start when the bank lot, where many of us were parking, filled up to the consternation of the bank's branch manager. She suggested we should park elsewhere--even though there were at least three spaces open by the front entrance. Despite several Glass Odyssey members and yours truly explaining we would not be there long, AND that two of the Vette members told this BB (Bank Bureaucrat) that their vehicles were actually owned by her bank, she was-n't happy. As promised, we were gone in short order and I don't want to mention the bank's name directly, but you may want to think twice about banking with a company that's still moving money by stage coach! Once again we were hosted at LeMay by Trudy Cofchin with tours conducted by Mike Ellis and Michael Arledge. What knowledgeable folks and it was very

interesting to hear Michael's stories on each of the vehicles. Michael is a fairly new tour guide, but certainly added a homespun twist to each vehicle we stopped at. It is always impossible to pick out a favorite when there are so many choices, but for the group I was in, the Packard exhibit was a big hit. Now, which of the umpteen Packard's was the overall favorite was impossible to tell. As a Glass Odyssey member told me--"all of them". We had an opportunity to see automotive storage taken to the max. Marrimont has a new storage building with auto storage racks on both sides of the building and collector cars down the center (see photo below). How does the LeMay staff get the vehicles above the ground level? They use a huge caterpillar forklift--like 15 tons worth--with an autoramp. They just drive the vehicle on the ramp and lift it up to the open space! Hundreds of vehicles were parked in the new structure. The permanent site for the Museum had the groundbreaking at the Tacoma Dome site a few months ago and the concrete pads and foundations have already been poured! Not all the cars will be displayed at one time, but with over 150,000 square feet of display space there will be plenty of vehicles to view. Once the new Museum is opened, OPR will be planning a tour ASAP!!

After the June 27th Shelton Car Show was over, OPR members were invited to mine and Susie’s house for a BBQ. First, a few words about the car show. The show is put on by the Yesteryear Car Club of Shelton. I have been to the last five shows and the number of vehicles on display is very diverse and the turnout is exceptional--almost 400 vehicles this year. Talk about diversity---Packards, Fords, old and newer, Chevy's, muscle cars, Pontiacs, hot rods, customs, motorcycles even exotics like Rolls Royce's. Most years there is even a wide range of foreign made vehicles like Porsches, older and newer, MG's, Triumphs, Datsuns, Ferraris, and an occasional race car, like a Lotus Formula Ford. The 2010 show was a little sparser for import vehicles, especially for Porsches, as I only counted four versus almost a dozen in 2009. Winner of the best import was a magnificent 1947 MG TC resplendent in 19 inch wire wheels, perfect black paint with original paperwork and tool kit on display. This MG was my favorite non Porsche at the event. After the show was over, OPR members were invited to our summer cabin on Mason Lake about ten miles west of Shelton. The weather was not as nice as usual this time of the year, cool vs. warm feeling, but for the locals, it was typical for pre 4th of July weather and we’re always hopeful. And it did not stop

over twenty OPR members from showing up as well as some of the James' neighbors who are car buffs and attended the Shelton show. The plan was to sit out on the dock by the water, but despite the tolerable temperatures, it was too cold and a little windy to get the boat out and surf Mason Lake.

The deck with its lake view was very pleasant and enjoyable though. We were lucky to have in our midst, Chef Jason James, pictured in the center, imported from the culinary capital of Gig Harbor to handle the grilling, while members brought salads, fabulous side dishes and great desserts. Did I mention the beverages? The Elwell's brought Rolling Rock Beer! Once brewed in Latrobe, PA, home to Arnold Palmer, this beer was the number one beverage of choice for Susie James'

husband while he was in college in PA. Thanks Bill and Maryann! By the way, the Rolling Rock brand is now owned by Budweiser. Hopefully, next year’s weather for the Shelton Show will be better and the James' will uncover their boat and jet ski for all to enjoy!

Good Customer Service I got my first Porsche in 1985. I was really looking for a project and the only thing I knew about Porsche was familiarity with the name, nothing more. I could go on about that project, which solidified my love for the brand, but that is another story. What is most important is the relationships I have developed over the years all across the country while being a member of what’s now my fifth PCA region. You may wonder where this story is going. Over the years I have always tried to support the vendors that support PCA, either through advertising in the local newsletter, in Panorama or those that support our events. Even so, I do my research by talking to the vendor or other Porsche drivers/members who has used these suppliers and or services. I am a recent member of the Olympic Peninsula Region since moving to the Shelton area. As I work in Bremerton, I needed to replace the tires on my Porsche and I am really weird about shops and how they take care when mounting and dismounting my tires. Since I do not know first hand about the various tire shops in the Bremerton area, I checked the local yellow pages and looked at the Nor’Wester for guidance. I was looking for quality, price and good customer service (some of the pricing was just plain stupid), so after talking to several shops, I settled on Big ‘O Tires. This was one of the last places I called on. From the very first meeting I was impressed with their customer service, something I am very familiar with. After meeting Mike and Michael at the counter, and telling them what my needs and concerns were, I knew I had found the right shop. I told them I would be supplying the tires and just wanted them mounted and balanced, we agreed on a price and I told them

I would be in touch. Although, I was feeling pretty good, I still had this weirdness about how careful they would be with my wheels. When my tires showed up I dropped them off Saturday afternoon. I was there with my car first thing Monday morning at opening. In just a little over an hour I got a call that my car was ready. They had mounted, balanced and dressed my tires. It may not seem like much to some, but you have to know that over the years I have replaced lots of tires. But the care, customer service and professionalism these folks demonstrated far exceeded my expectations. My point is to choose well and share your experiences so other may benefit. Thanks Big ‘O Tires. Hayward M Seymore OPR member

Well it was time for Porsches on the Pier again in August, but as in the past few years the event has actually morphed into a three event weekend. What started out as a one day display of our club’s Porsches on the Port Angeles Pier in conjunction with the Rotary Club’s Arts in Action weekend, followed by an ice cream social at our home, now includes two events on Saturday as well.

On Saturday afternoon Cecil White of Port Angeles led the way for all followers to Hurricane Ridge in his shinny Guard’s Red 993. He was joined by Kevin Strilcov, Judy Berrain, the Loser’s and Pazan’s, this year, and while not a huge turnout, a

rather boisterous one discussed how much they enjoyed the trip up and back!

On Saturday evening, there was a social at the waterfront Downrigger Restaurant in Port Angeles as well. This year attendance was over 30 which included new members Kitty and Larry Byrne into the fold. The dinner event went

wonderful, filled with libations, good food, and of course, lots of Porschespeak.

On Sunday it was time for POPPA. Gloria and Keith Mellon led a large contingency over from Kitsap Mall to meet up with those Porsches already in Port Angeles. After some parking lot grabbing at the local McDonalds, we caravanned to the pier. Having begun seven years ago when the region was in its first year, our attendance has grown annually but this year realized a record 50% increase over last as 36 beautiful Porsches lined the Port Angeles Pier. Thousands of spectators, along with over 25% of the region’s entire membership, enjoyed fantastic weather and really got into the Porsche mood as they enjoyed up close and personal views of Porsches ranging from Port Angeles resident Gene Fish’s 1953 bent window 356 to a near new GT2 owned by Steve and Debi Wood of Gig Harbor. Virtually all Porsche models from

mild to wild were represented on the pier this year, so the spectators, club members, and Rotary’s Arts in Action event organizers were completely thrilled.

For those that don’t know or recall, Arts in Actions is an annual Port Angeles weekend event where visitors to the festival find, in addition to our beautiful Porsches, a juried arts and crafts show featuring nearly 50 artisans, live music and dancing, a world-class invitational sand sculpture contest, great food and drink, and live art demonstrations, all presented in a fun street-fair atmosphere in a beautiful waterfront setting. The sand sculptors that attend compete for qualifying spots in the international sand sculpture final competition to be held in Federal Way later this summer.

We are already looking forward to an even bigger turnout in 2011, but at this rate, it looks like we may need to ask the city of Port Angeles to make the pier longer. So mark your calendar for next year! We’ll be there!!!

ELKS CAR SHOW By Gloria Mellon

The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (BPOE) #1181 is a charitable organization dedicated to helping those within the community and Washington State. This quote was taken from their website. This year was the 22nd Annual car show to raise funds to assist the Lodge in its charitable activities such as: Elks Therapy Program for Children, which one of our members is employed as an Occupational Therapist, Children’s Hospital, Retsil Veterans Home and local area children’s sports activities. Keith and I are very proud to be members of the Elks and were even more proud that our own OPR Club supported this car show with seven cars in attendance. There was the Ken Schaaf’s 1976 RS Olympic Blue 911, John James in his 1970T Black 911, the perfect GT2 owned by Steve Wood, Brian Forde’s 1985 Black 911, Keith with his special Rain Forest Green C4S, and the Cayman girl brigade, Debi Wood with her Black 2009 and me with my 2006 Carmona Red. We all corralled at the entrance to the registration area of the Lodge in East Bremerton. I had pre-registered all of the cars in

advance so it made it easier to get right in. Since I know most of the car show “guys”, I was able to talk them into letting us park where we wanted. In the first year we attended, we ended up in the back 40 and felt a little like leftovers. Last year, we were by the food and facilities which was very convenient. Now I realize where we want to be at all shows and I’ll continue to request that area as long as we have club members that want to come. Back to the actual show…. There were over 175 cars and our president (this is where we learned he liked the title Exalter Ruler, it’s what the leader of the local Elks is called) John James #31 won the award for Best Foreign Import

European and won a gift certificate from Quality Tire and Service.

Once again the Olympic Peninsula Region participated in The Cruz on the Port Orchard waterfront hosted by The Saints Car Club. Our luck with the weather held out and the rain stayed away for the most part and as the day progressed it became rather warm bringing larger crowds out to view the great selection of cars and motorcycles. Since the Saints have been able to give us the same parking area year after year, I think that we are beginning to become something of an institution ourselves.

Besides myself, the Mellon’s brought both their Cayman and 911 C4S and our Exalted Ruler, John James brought out his black 1970 911T, which garnered more than just a few looks by passing admirers. These face to face

contacts are always interesting. People talk about their Porsche experiences and ask questions about the cars and what our club is about. You get a sense that if given the chance they would be happy to relive their own Porsche past.

Special thanks go out to the Saints Car Club of Port Orchard for putting on such a great event and supporting local charities such as South Kitsap Helpline, The Family Kitchen as well as The Rainbow Girls. Port Orchard’s Chamber of Commerce should also be recognized for supporting this event in its efforts to make it fun for the whole family by supporting the main street vendors.

I would like to invite any club member to come out and attend these car shows as they often are organized as fund raisers for various charities, which support local organizations or individuals and on top of that people are always eager to admire a Porsche.

The 13th Annual Cruise the Narrows was held on Saturday, July 31st at the Uptown Shopping Center in Gig Harbor, with Porsche being the featured marque. The Gig Harbor Cruisers, which can be found online at www.gigharborcruisers.org called John James and asked if the OPR-PCA could provide a good representation of the marque. Our club came out strong and provided 24 cars. The cars were featured in the pavilion on Main Street and Porsche Club awards were won by Bill Elwell for his 1989 Porsche 944 S2 and Alex Raphael 2002 911 Turbo GT Porsche. I am not sure many people have seen the variety of Porsche that were represented at the show especially Alex Raphael’s 2002 Porsche. The car show was on a picture perfect day. Altogether, there were 233 cars this year which is up from 203 last year. As many remember this car show used to be held at the Tacoma Narrows Airport for 11 of the last 13 years. The final year at the airport was 2008 and there were 160 cars, so the Uptown location has worked well. The car show proceeds support scholarships for the local high schools. The Gig Harbor Cruisers have contributed over $40,000 in scholarships through the years. An interesting point is that the recipients are not always the best grade point average students, but they need to express their interest in car related fields. The current President, Travis Leonard was a recipient of a Cruisers scholarship and he now owns Gig Harbor Auto Works. I think it shows that as students focus on their car interests, a career in the field can open up. Pictures of the Porsches at the Pavilion are on the Cruiser’s web site, but unfortunately I only took a few pictures. I was particularly impressed with Ed Olsen’s 1955 Ford pickup (photo below). Ed is from Snohomish and recently finished the construction of the truck. Ed won the Favorite 50’s award. There were 31 awards total. If you did not get a chance to see the top award trophies, you missed probably the most interesting and unique trophy of any car show. I do wish I had taken a picture of them, because they are worth the price of admission. Remind me and I’ll ask that a picture be placed on the web site so you can see them. Thank you for coming. The OPR-PCA has an exceptional reputation for supporting valuable community causes and that is good! I hope most are aware that the Harbor History Museum will open in Gig Harbor on the downtown waterfront on September 18th. This has been an eight year community effort to raise $11.5 million. We have nearly reached our goal. We hope to have some car events occasionally. It will be an ideal destination for a cruise. If you would like to volunteer or contribute to the capital campaign please call the office. We are selling charter memberships and bricks, both are generous ways to recognize the new museum in Gig Harbor.

Brilliant Porsches, Vibrant Lamborghinis and Glowing Ferraris filled the spacious MAXRPM parking lot along 6th Avenue in Bremerton for a very special gathering of beautiful cars and performance enthusiasts. The crew at MAXRPM held an open house during the Arizona based Evolution Motorsports (EVOMS) swing through the Northwest on August 14, 2010. They were in Bremerton with a number of cars displaying their products and services. The highlight of the car show was a Gumpert Apollo. This low slung orange supercar has some of the most advanced design and technology currently available to the supercar market. MAXRPM and EVOMS Porsche Turbo cars were also in attendance and are incredible examples of quality and performance. These cars depict what is available for street as well as track performance systems to develop 1000HP and beyond.

Alex Raphael of MAXRPM and Todd Zuccone of EVOMS held a tech session discussing tuning theory and answering questions about the technology developed for upgrading today’s factory sports vehicles to make them not only faster, but more consistent performers given the specific performance expectations of their owners.

As Todd explained, “ECU systems for example are designed to first make the car run, then protect the engine in case events occur which may cause damage and finally it is designed to enhance engine performance. To tune a vehicle it takes time and experimentation to find what works and what does not. That is the key and why some of our products cost what they do. To tune an ECU for a specific platform, layers of engine protection has to be unraveled to allow the engine to operate at new levels and this takes time and energy to develop as performance systems.

Alex continued with that subject by showing an EVOMS exhaust header and comparing it to a less

expensive piece offered by another manufacturer. He explained how in the long run you can save money and heartache by selecting a higher quality product that is designed as part of a system as opposed to just bolting on parts and expecting the car to hold up and deliver comparable performance without failing over time.

OPR Club members in attendance enjoying this free event included Darwin Gearey, Steve Wood, and myself. Club members working hard to keep things running smoothly included Randy Baisden, Debbie Raphael and Brett (Burgermeister) Burroughs.

Warm summer sunshine made a welcome appearance as burgers were grilled and a live band kicked out tunes adding to the festive atmosphere where I hope Alex, Debbie, Randy and the MAXRPM crew will continue to bring world-class performance parts and services to the Northwest. I encourage any club member to attend these tech sessions to learn about caring for and improving these very special cars we own.

We’ve had a very successful summer full of club events even if it seems that summer hasn’t gotten here yet. We have enjoyed a number of different events ranging from tours to rallies. There were numerous car shows we participated in, the Bremerton Elks and the Cruz in Port Orchard, thanks to Gloria Mellon for organizing these. We had a record turn-out for Porsches on the Pier in Port Angeles, thanks to Cecil White for organizing and leading the Hurricane Ridge tour and Kurt & Lori Schneider for planning Friday night’s dinner and the ice cream social afterwards. Sorry I missed it this year. As the featured marquee at Cruise the Narrows in Gig Harbor, OPR members took home three trophies: Steve & Debi Wood, John James, and Bill Elwell. John James also won a trophy at the Bremerton Elks car show. Maryann Elwell won a trophy at the Port Ludlow Days car show. Many thanks to Bob and Martha Olbrych for setting that up along with the gimmick rally, which was a blast! I also wanted

to thank Alex Raphael for a great Tech Session and BBQ at MAXRPM in Bremerton. In looking at our upcoming calendar of events, we have plenty of fall events planned, no matter what your interests. A number of us will attend the Porsche Escape in British Columbia in September. If you plan to drive up with the group on the 9th, make sure Brian Forde knows, so he can get you the information. On September 25th, Kip Sparber and Anna Hoey will host a BBQ at their beautiful home in Belfair and our October dinner will be in Shelton on the 23rd. We have also rescheduled the Walla Walla Winery Tour for October 8th-10th. Be sure to get your room booked by the 9/7 deadline to get the discounted Porsche Club rate. The Little Creek Resort is now taking room reservations at $109 + tax for the night of our Holiday Party, December 11th. See the announcements in this newsletter for more details. There are only have four months left in

the year to rack up points for the 2010 Member Participation Awards. The competition is really heating up and the latest standings are as follows. The top three woman are: Barb Hanford is in 1st place, Debbie Raphael has pulled into 2nd place over Sandy Baisden who is in 3rd place with Grace Stoner behind her by just 1 point. The top three men are Bill Elwell in 1st, Brett Burroughs in 2nd, and Randy Baisden in 3rd place. However, Brooks Hanford and Dick Brown are just behind by 1 point. So at this point it is still anybody’s game. The top board/chair member is Maryann Elwell, only a few points ahead of Gloria Mellon. Don’t forget, Bill Elwell has a challenge for the men (non-board/chair members) – if you can beat him this year, he will treat you to a free dinner. If you would like to host a club event, please contact me via phone: ( 2 5 3 ) 8 5 3 - 4 0 0 3 o r e - m a i l : [email protected].

In fact Lyle didn’t even unhitch his trailer, just left it in his driveway ready to go. Just plain ole fun racing in Portland. Seven 944’s made it, great weather and no major incidents. Although on Saturday I did have my exhaust bolts loosen up and fall out and a rock punctured Tim and Mike’s car radiator. Luckily one of the Oregon guys had a spare radiator at his home a couple miles away. So after a drive to collect the radiator and new exhaust bolts we had a (not too unusual) Saturday night at the track, under the cars wrench-ing on them and listening to the drag racers go by. Like I’ve expressed before there are usually many hours of work for every minute your race car is on track but if you like the speed and challenge there’s nothing like it. I’ll just close with this last little tidbit. Last time in Portland I spent the weekend looking across the pit row to a script written on the back of a race trailer, it said “Racing is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy”.
