We love it here!Visit Noosa and these are the words you’ll hear on the street, and you’ll also declare before too long. It’s a place you fall in love with, the kind of place that stays with you always, leaving indelible memories of your Noosa holiday to share.

A proposal, a wedding, generations of visits from kids to grandkids, backpacking the east coast, doing the Noosa Tri, taking a seat at a favourite restaurant or finding new ones, savouring sweet snow cones on the beach, marveling each time you take to a beloved nature track, carving up familiar surf breaks… Memories are made here.

Noosa is enduring and constant, but also constantly evolving. There’s a fresh creative spirit and innovative energy in the air, bringing new dining, a serious barista culture, inventive arts, endless shopping and new ways to immerse in our nature, from national parks to river and from the ocean to the sky.

This little book in your hands is inspired by all of this and we hope it inspires you as well. Its pages have been filled by photographers, both local and beyond, who have helped create fresh, new, authentic visions of Noosa.

Welcome to the next wave of Noosa, you’re going to love it.

If you, like many first-time visitors, think there’s one place called Noosa, think again! Noosa is a collection of villages, quite close to one another but all very distinctive and much-loved for their individual flair and ambience. Your days can comfortably glide between seaside mecca and river’s edge villages and out to the green vistas of our nearby country towns. Choose your mood, then choose your village!

Noosa Heads

Imagine a place where, beside the sparkling sea and the deep blue sky, is one of Australia’s most dynamic visitor hubs with shopping in abundance and unparalleled dining in bustling cafés under green trees or in elegant eateries with ocean views.

Add to this vision a headland on your right, bursting with leafy green as it leads to one of the country’s most loved national parks, home to native animals and a sanctuary for anyone

in search of a long wave to surf or a beach that feels all your own.

To your left is a thin white stretch of sand that will take you to Fraser Island by 4WD and, behind this, one of only two everglade wetland systems in the world.

Imagine no more, this is Noosa Heads! Energised yet calm, sophisticated yet down-to-earth, natural, beautiful and always a sought-after spot to be.

Sunshine Beach

Sunshine Beach is a firm favourite with locals and visitors alike. An understated beach village, it's all chilled and colourful and set beneath green trees and pandanus palms.

The hub, Duke Street, wraps around shopfronts that deliver cocktails and coffee, pilates stretches and haircuts, pasta, pizza, tapas, dim sum and burgers – it’s eclectic and harmonious! Be gob-smacked by sweeping sea views at the surf club with whale sightings in winter.

As the southern entrance to the Noosa National Park headland, Sunshine has a dog-friendly beach, a patrolled surf beach and an infectious atmosphere that starts as the sun rises over the sea.

Noosa Junction

The affectionately named Junction is where locals intersect with visitors, where change is reinvigorating a much-loved street culture and where friendly bars, enduring cafés, a cinema and supermarkets are all on hand.

A refreshing creative spirit is bringing live music, night markets, art and film festivals to the Junction. It's a village with arts and energy in its sights. Keep watching this space!

Peregian Beach

Fringed by a stunning stretch of sea and set around a big hug of a village square, Peregian Beach has a laid back local feel, with food in spades, shops that make you stop, therapists to soothe and large green play spaces for kids to run amok.

Great coffee is everywhere – in barber shops, organic grocers and alongside the best croissants outside of Paris.

Don't miss the much-loved Peregian Originals held on the second Sunday of every month right beside the beach – it’s a must if you love original tunes.

Noosaville

Noosaville is embraced by a peaceful atmosphere but has a seriously hip food, lifestyle and shopping scene. It unwinds along a spacious, picturesque picnic heaven with river views that never tire.

A humming spread of must-do dining, cool new bars, laid back take-aways and global cuisine are on-hand, joined by fashion, flowers, books and beauty salons.

It’s particularly loved by families, with splashy swims in the river shallows, abundant barbecues and plenty of palms for shade.

Eumundi | A must-visit, Eumundi is lined with trees, history and smiling faces.

The famous markets overflow with discoveries, while Berkelouw Books, the oldest bookseller in Australia, has shelves of new and second-hand covers. Coffee stops, shops and historic pubs delight while heritage buildings breathe new life into modern art, housing exhibitions of photography, showcasing fresh talent and bringing music to our ears(the divine Katie Noonan is a regular!).

Kin Kin and Cooran | Noosa’s northern-most hinterland towns are inviting and tranquil, with a small footprint that belies their big place in the local landscape.

Cooran was a boom-town, riding the success of timber, dairy and livestock and today it’s a place of peaceful repose, with quiet

cottages, a bright local restaurant and access to the Noosa Trail Network.

Also with a place in Noosa’s productive early days, Kin Kin is a town loved by locals for its casual charm, passionate local artists, health therapists, foodies and hobby farmers, as well as the friendly Country Life Hotel.

Tewantin | The original beating heart of Noosa supported by timber-logging, gold and fishing in the late 1800s, Tewantin overlooks the Noosa River and has the ambience of a busy village where people know your name and things are happening.

The freshest sandwiches and bakery goods tempt, and you'll find a myriad of restaurants at the bustling, boat-filled Noosa Marina, which also hosts weekly Sunday markets. Call into Noosa Regional

Gallery for regularly changing exhibitions and local creations to take home.

Boat tours and sunset cruises depart from the Marina and you can sip coffee or wine, browse local shops, get a massage, enjoy a riverview meal or research your nexttour at the Visitor Information Centre.

Boreen Point | Inland from the sea on the shores of vast Lake Cootharaba, the gorgeous fishing village of Boreen Point is famous for the delectable Sunday Spit Roast at the Apollonian Hotel, an 1870s gold-era pub.

Pitch a tent beside the lake, hire a canoe, sail a small boat, cast a line and generally just slow the pace of liferight down.

It’s a creative community, with artists residing in town and it is also the closestgateway village to access the Noosa Everglades.

Cooroy | It’s only a short, scenic 20 minute drive from the beach to Cooroy, past pyramid-shaped Mt Cooroy, a productive natural water spring.

On the way, head to Mt Tinbeerwah lookout for 360 degree views taking in sea, river, forest, everglades and hinterland. Lake Macdonald and the Noosa Botanic Gardens are beautiful, particularly in spring with fresh flowers blooming.

Cooroy has creatively transformed its heritage buildings into arts spaces, interpretive walks and parkland and it has the coolest library you’re likely to see!

Pomona | Pomona is a seemingly sleepy town, until you dig a little deeper and realise with glee that it has some incredible local legends and claims to fame!

Mt Cooroora hosts the annual King of the Mountain foot-race with its origins in a bet at the local pub and first held in 1959.

The Majestic Theatre is the world’s longest continuously operating silent movie theatre… wow! It’s magical and regularly hosts musicians, performers and, of course, silent films.

A cosy collection of cafés, fresh fruit grocer and busy bakery lead you to the sweet Old Pomona Railway Station Gallery and historic Pomona Hotel, as well as the Noosa Shire Museum, seat of the Noosa Council from 1909 to 1985.

Stay in the heart of it all at Noosa’s Hastings Street and enjoy a meal with a sea view. A number of open-air and beachfront restaurants line this famous strip, providing platefuls of delicious and locally sourced produce.

A short drive from Noosa Main Beach and Hastings Street is Noosaville. Noosaville’s main street, Gympie Terrace, hums

with quality restaurants, healthy food choices and eclectic cafés. Thomas Street is another favourite Noosaville enclave, offering ice-creams and elegant eateries with a river view.

Wander a little further and take your time to sample the diverse range of cuisine served at cafés and eateries found in Sunshine Beach and Peregian Beach Square.

Picnic with a View With all this fresh food on offer, and no shortage of scenic spots, Noosa is made for picnics. Grab some freshly baked bread, cheese and locally grown tomatoes, along with your favourite sip, and head for peaceful country gardens, a sunny beach spot or a grassy seat on the river's edge.

In Noosa, it’s all about immersing yourself in the coastal lifestyle. Whether it’s surfing or stand-up paddle boarding at our many pristine

beaches renowned for their glittering crystal clear water or exploring the many ways to navigate the Noosa River, there is just so much to see and do!

Page 18: Noosa Holiday Guide 2016-17

18 / SALTWATER TO FRESHWATER

Noosa is famous for its beaches! A must-do when visiting is a trip to Noosa Main Beach, one of the few beaches along Australia’s east coast that faces north, providing a protected calm space to swim. It's also patrolled year round by surf lifesavers.

If you’re all about nestling in a quiet cove that’s only accessible by foot, we highly recommend a morning at Little Cove or Tea Tree Bay in the Noosa National Park.

Our tip: Plan to be there at low tide to maximise the experience.

If you love surfing your choices are vast, from calm Main Beach to long breaks around the National Park and faster waves from Sunshine to Peregian.

We love stand-up paddle boarding in Noosa and there are plenty of places to hire a board.

Spend a couple of hours enjoying the calm, tranquil waters of the Noosa River, or catching waves at Noosa Main Beach.

Our tip: Head towards Noosa’s canals and spot the luxury homes that line the water's edge.

The Noosa River is a hub of aquatic activity including jet skiing, boating, kayaking, fishing and much, much more. Book a thrill ride on a jet boat, hire a BBQ pontoon boat or enjoy a river cruise at sunset.

Did you know that Noosa is home to one of only two everglade systems in the world? Nicknamed the River of Mirrors due to their incredible reflections, the Noosa Everglades are rich in flora and fauna, and have remained relatively unchanged for centuries. A visit to Noosa isn’t complete without a canoe or boat cruise through these magnificent waters!

Catch a Break in NoosaNoosa Main Beach Running parallel to Hastings Street in Noosa Heads is Noosa Main Beach, one of the few beaches along Australia’s east coast that faces north.

Noosa Groyne Right next to Noosa Main Beach you will find Noosa Groyne. This is a spot where you can learn to surf or just stretch out under trees.

Noosa Spit Just a short walk from Noosa’s Hastings Street is the Noosa Spit. This beach is a dedicated off-leash at all times dog beach, and is also a popular picnic spot to spend the day.

Noosa National Park Beaches There are several beaches in the headland section of the Noosa National Park. These beaches are gorgeous, and are popular with surfers. Please note these beaches are not patrolled.

Eastern Beaches The long stretch between Sunshine Beach and Peregian Beach is divided into Sunrise Beach, Castaways Beach and Marcus Beach. These beaches are not patrolled year-round but are perfect if you want plenty of space for a long walk on the sand.

Sunshine Beach Sunshine Beach is another patrolled beach and is on the eastern side; meaning much bigger surf. The beach stretches for 15 kilometres and is very popular with experienced surfers.

Peregian Beach About 10 kilometres south of Sunshine Beach, heading down the coast road, is Peregian, another patrolled surf beach loved by locals.

Noosa North Shore You can drive on this long stretch of beach on the northern side of Noosa (cross on the car ferry at Tewantin), as well as fish, surf and camp. You feel like you're miles away, even though it only takes about 10 minutes to get there.

22 / BENEATH THE TREES

Pack your hiking boots!A visit to Noosa is not complete without a walk through our gorgeous Noosa National Park. It’s not only one of Australia’s most popular national parks, it was also voted as one of the top five experiences in Queensland by Lonely Planet. It offers one of the most beautiful coastal scenic walks, along with a vast network of forest tracks which provide a natural habitat for some of Australia’s most treasured flora and fauna, including our much loved local koalas, wallabies and kookaburras.

The Noosa Trail Network is beautiful and made up of eight scenic hinterland trails suitable for walking, hiking, mountain biking and horse riding. From Kin Kin to Woondum National Park, Pomona to Tewantin National Park, and Yurol State Forest to Tuchekoi National Park, there is a track for all fitness levels. Plan a multi-day trek staying in beautiful country cottages or campgrounds.

The best views are always from above, and if you’re looking for views, vistas and lookouts in Noosa, you’re spoilt for choice. In fact, taking time out to enjoy the view is a bit of a ritual here. With plenty of hiking trails and mountains offering breathtaking views, you'll soon have the lay of Noosa's lands.

The Noosa National Park has views aplenty while Laguna Lookout on Noosa Hill provides sweeping vistas from beach and river to the hinterland beyond.

Another local favourite is Mount Tinbeerwah. Located just 12 kilometres

out of Noosa on the Cooroy-Noosa Road, here you will find stunning panoramas. The Mt Tinbeerwah Lookout hike will take you about 45 minutes to complete. Remember to bring your camera as the 360 degree view of Noosa is astounding, especially on a clear day.

For the more adventurous, hike to the top of Mt Cooroora in Pomona for a view of the Noosa hinterland, and beyond. It’s a tough climb and is best done first thing in the morning before the weather warms up. The spectacular view from the top makes it all worthwhile.

What is the first thing you do when you arrive in Noosa?

What hidden gems have youuncovered when visiting Noosa?

How would you describe

I do my best to get in the ocean as soon as I can! My house is walking distance to Sunshine Beach, so I usually drop my bags, throw on some boardies and run down to the beach! It's the perfect way to wash off the stress of the ‘real world’ and start easing into Noosa time … I always catch myself walking home with a massive grin on my face.

I first came to Noosa 15 years ago for a holiday, and then returned regularly to train for Ironman. There's no doubt my favourite thing is running the trails of the national park, and I know them all well. I can run for hours and never see a soul! Riding in the Noosa bike bunch is a great way to catch up with mates and have a laugh, not to mention that the cycling in the Noosa hinterland is simply stunning. Other favourites are simply a sunset beer at the Surf Club after a surf at Nationals, relaxed dinners at Mooshka in Sunshine Beach, and the Noosa Farmers Market on a Sunday is a little gem and top spot to hang out with friends.

Saltwater, Sunshine, Happiness

I always take them for a swim at Little Cove, or if we have time, hire a boat on the river and find a private stretch of sand for fishing, beers and lunch.

There's no doubt for me that running in the Noosa National Park is one of my favourite things to do in the world! It's my happy place! I'm training to run the NYC Marathon this year for Robert de Castella’s charity, the Indigenous Marathon Foundation, and so I'm looking forward to spending plenty of time on the Noosa trails this year! Finish off with a body surf and then spend the morning recovering with a coffee at Costa, Bean Drop or Fomo and that's my idea of heaven!

Is there one thing you always do when you have visitors in Noosa?

What is your favourite exercise to do in Noosa and where do you do it?

The Junction is a great spot to shop with casual clothes and vintage finds, or stroll

along the river’s edge in Noosaville, in and out of breezy beach fashion shops and browsing books at the River Read.

For a local take-home head to one of our surf shops and pick up a board that suits or talk to one of our revered shapers to order a custom-made board.

Boho and heavenly stores await in our hinterland villages and you’ll find galleries in most of them, showcasing local and touring artists’ work. As you head for the hills, don’t miss the Noosa Regional Gallery in Tewantin, the Old Pomona Railway Station Gallery and the Butter Factory in Cooroy.

Photographers, sculptors, potters, painters, jewellers and more all call Noosa home and you’ll find their creations in galleries and shops across Noosa. Pick up a piece to evoke your holiday moments once home.

FINDING INSPIRATION WITH JANE MEREDITH / 27

Where do you find your inspiration in Noosa for your jewellery designs?

Noosa is known for its luxurious lifestyle and is the ultimate destination for peace and tranquility. With its iconic landmarks like the Noosa National Park, divine beaches and sunset skies, it truly is the perfect romantic escape or a place to visit. I first started my jewellery business Secrets in the year 2000 in Noosa and many collections have been inspired by the beautiful scenes that Noosa has to offer from the glittering reflections on the aquamarine blue waters to the warm yellow sunrises. The landscape has so many colours and textures that have all been inspirations behind our fine jewellery designs. Do you have any Secrets to share when it comes to shopping in Noosa?

Shopping in Noosa is a delight. I love to take myself down to Hastings Street. My first stop is always a coffee at Aromas as it's situated directly across from our new store location, so it’s great. Noosa offers a one of a kind boutique, street shopping experience. To find something for the home, I love to

visit Signature on Hastings Street. They truly capture the essence of Noosa in their store. Sizzle and Zambeezee are also two of my favourite places to source something special to wear to events or for everyday style. I love to gaze in the window at Isabella’s fine and antique jewellers, they have some beautiful pieces. After my dose of retail therapy I love to wind down at Bistro C for a cocktail and watch the sunset over Noosa Main Beach. What are your style essentials for living the Noosa lifestyle?

It’s pretty much spring/summer all year round in Noosa. With a hot and steamy climate I find the following essentials are required to keep me cool throughout the year and live the lifestyle Noosa offers. Firstly, natural fibres and materials are best. A large floppy hat, sunglasses and colourful sarong. For footwear a well-made, high quality pair of Italian shoes are key. I often find my shoe wardrobe at Diana’s in Bay Village. For the home, my essentials are a nice candle for the balmy nights and colourful cushions for comfort and style.

28 / WEEKEND MARKET FIX ’’‘‘

We love a weekend market and we’re very proud of all our fresh, locally grown produce and organic delights; herbs, vegetables, cheese, fruit, chocolate, honey, stone baked bread, roasted coffee, gluten-free ice-cream, organic jams and nourish bowls – we’ve got it all! So if you want to experience Noosa's food culture first-hand, it’s time to visit one of our many weekend markets where producers, artistic creatives and inspiring cooks gather together to share their expertise with everyone.

We love food in Noosa and a highlight is the Noosa Farmers Market. Here you can buy everything from fresh figs and vibrant limes, to locally grown tomatoes, seafood, cheeses and much more.

A holiday in Noosa wouldn’t be complete without making the pilgrimage to Eumundi for the markets every Saturday and Wednesday. Our local advice is to get there early to beat the crowds.

Remember to explore Eumundi after you’ve had your market fix, there are lots of cute shops from bookstores and cafés to vintage clothes and gifts.

Head south along the coastal David Low Way on a Sunday morning (first and third) for the Peregian Beach Markets. These open air markets are perfect for creative types looking to take something home with them, whether it be a plush cushion, crochet bikini or a new plant.

Weekend Market Fix

Noosa has it all - a fantastic dining scene with a distinct emphasis on fresh local produce, and the local Noosa Farmers Market is one of the best markets around. It’s no secret that I also love to surf and Noosa has some of the best long breaks around. I wish I was there right now.

Just relax, they say… when it’s time to step out of your busy life, step right into relaxation, pampering and calm, Noosa-style. Noosa’s natural beauty really inspires you to focus on health and well-being, even when on holiday.

Head to the Noosa River foreshore or any of our beaches around sunrise and you’ll see how wellness works in Noosa. Jogging, rowing, ocean swimming, yoga and pilates, stand-up paddling (even yoga ON a stand-up paddleboard), stretching on the sand, personal training … there’s so much on offer you might have to stay another day, or week!

Exhale with the indulgence of a heavenly day spa or unwind with a massage treatment. Think organic body scrubs and massage oils, sourced from Noosa.

Once you’ve taken your fill of our fresh Noosa air and need something more sustaining, nourishing food abounds, from wholesome and healthful to hearty and replenishing. Eat out or cook your own with fresh produce sourced from markets and food stores.

Fresh, tasty and with presentation that’s snap-worthy, your Noosa food experience will keep you fuelled throughout your stay and beyond.

36 / LISA WILKINSON LOVES

I've been coming to Noosa since I was 15, and have loved it as a holiday destination ever since...so much so, my husband Peter FitzSimons and I had our honeymoon here, and always try to get back for a Noosa break at least once every year. So, here are a few of my favourite things to do when I'm here...

1. WALK! Do the coast walk through the Noosa National Park...preferably in the early morning. I never cease to be amazed by the incredible drama and untouched true Australian beauty of that walk. A must do.

2. FISH! Hire a runabout at the jetty behind the Sheraton Noosa, head out to the surrounding waterways for the afternoon and throw a line over. Such a relaxing way to finish the day, and if you catch something and you're lucky enough to be staying at the Sheraton, the chef will cook it up for you for dinner.

3. SHOP! Noosa is packed with some brilliant boutiques, many of them carrying fabulous labels you can't find elsewhere in the country. And make sure you put Secrets Shhh on your list. This is the flagship store, and their simulated diamond pieces are absolutely exquisite. And so well priced. And I defy you to pick the difference from the real thing!

4. EAT! The array of restaurants in Noosa is bordering on criminal (for my hips!), as I love heading out as the sun goes down, wandering Hastings Street and choosing a different restaurant each night.

5. SURF! Whether it's boogie boarding the gentle waves at Noosa's Main Beach or heading for a more intense experience at Sunshine or Peregian, the beaches around Noosa are impossible to resist. So don't!

6. SKI! Hire a jet-ski. Too much fun!!

7. LICK! Grab an ice-cream at one of the many excellent gelato bars and ice-creameries on Hastings St, and wander the beach boardwalk. Guarantee you'll not only smile your way through the beautiful scenes of kids and families at play...but I bet that you'll run into someone you know.

8. HANG! There are coffee shops galore...but I love grabbing the papers and hanging at Aromas in one of their beautiful French bistro chairs. For hours!

9. PAMPER! I love the spa at the Sheraton...and they do one of the best facials I've ever had. And while you're at it, grab a massage as well. And just float away...

10. VOW TO RETURN! Because of all of the above.

Embraced by national parks, it’s no wonder visitors seek restoration in Noosa. Our green landscapes soothe, while the terrain provides plenty of places to energise.

Noosa National Park is an entire headland and one of Australia’s most popular parks for good reason. Accessible and beautiful, its coastal and rainforest tracks are well-worn

by hikers, runners, surfers and nature enthusiasts from all over.

The Great Sandy National Park is home to the Teewah Coloured Sands, Noosa Everglades and the Cooloola Great Walk, connecting Noosa to Rainbow Beach.

Tewantin National Park, just 10 minutes from Noosa

Heads, incorporates Mt Tinbeerwah and the Wooroi Day Use Area, a mecca for mountain biking and even abseiling.

The colossal Mt Cooroora in Pomona is the centrepiece of Tuchekoi National Park with panoramic views across farms and forest to coastal lakes and the Cooloola Sand Patch.

Green Escapes

Noosa Biosphere ReserveNoosa is Queensland’s first UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, an international recognition of the special balance we keep between the natural environment and the people in it.

More than 30% of Noosa is protected area, from parks and forests to lakes and river, providing a safe haven for 44% of all of Australia’s bird species and 700 species of native animals.
