About The International Day of Nonviolence.

The International Day of Nonviolence is

marked on 2 October each year,

the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, leader of the

Indian independence movement and pioneer of

the philosophy and strategy of nonviolence.

According to General Assembly resolution of

15 June 2007, which established the

commemoration, the International Day is an

occasion to "disseminate the message of

nonviolence, including through education and

public awareness". The resolution reaffirms

"the universal relevance of the principle of

nonviolence" and the desire "to secure a

culture of peace, tolerance, understanding and

nonviolence".

About The 2010 Global Campaign

The UN declaration of the International Day of

Nonviolence in 2007 came to life on

October 2nd 2010 with a Global campaign co-

organized by Peace Troops (PeaceTroops.org),

The GandhiServe Foundation GandhiServe.org)

and Scouting4Peace (scouting4peace.org)

…the beginning of a new era of the

Nonviolence movement to carry forward the

life work of great leaders like Mahatma

Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. The

observation included gatherings in cities

around the world to talk about Nonviolence

take the Pledge of Nonviolence.

Snapshot of the 2010 International Day of Nonviolence

The International Day of Nonviolence (IDNV) Global Campaign 2010 was the first of its kind to

create a world-wide movement to raise awareness about the principles of Nonviolence on this day.

The event was organized at www.meetup.com/idnv. The event received widespread support and

over 58 people from 45 cities from 24 countries across the globe registered interested. Of these,

21 cities had organized meetups to observe the day which is also Mahatma Gandhi’s Birthday.

While there are many movements to promote Peace, the IDNV global movement is the first of its

kind to focus on widespread active pursuance of the principles of Nonviolence. As author Mark

Kurlansky in his book “Nonviolence: The History of a Dangerous Idea” says “Nonviolence is not the

same thing as pacifism. .. Pacifism is passive; but Nonviolence is active.”

As Mahatma Gandhi said in 1946 - "The world of tomorrow will be, must be, a society based on

Nonviolence...It may seem a distant goal, an impractical Utopia. But it is not in the least

unobtainable, since it can be worked for here and now. An individual can adopt the way of life of

the future – the non-violent way - without having to wait for others to do so. And if an individual

can do it, cannot whole groups of individuals? Whole nations?”

The Pledge of Nonviolence states that making peace must start within ourselves. By adopting it we commit ourselves as best as we can to become nonviolent and peaceable people.

To Respect Self and Others

To respect myself, to affirm others and to avoid uncaring criticism, hateful words, physical attacks and self-destructive behavior.

To Communicate Better

To share my feelings honestly, to look for safe ways to express my anger, and to work at solving problems peacefully.

To Listen

To listen carefully to one another, especially those who disagree with me, and to consider others' feelings and needs rather than insist on having my own way.

To Forgive

To apologize and make amends when I have hurt another, to forgive others, and to keep from holding grudges.

To Respect Nature

To treat the environment and all living things, including our pets, with respect and care.

To Play Peacefully

To select entertainment and toys that support nonviolence and to avoid entertainment that makes violence look exciting, funny or acceptable.

To Be Courageous

To challenge violence in all its forms whenever I encounter it, whether at home, at school, at work, or in the community, and to stand with others who are treated unfairly.

This is my pledge. These are my goals.

The observance of the International Day of Nonviolence was conducted at the beautiful Lake Shrine

home of the Gandhi Samadhi also known as the Mahatma Gandhi World Peace Memorial.

The event began with a talk by Brother Vijayananda of The Self Realization Fellowship on "World

Unity through Nonviolence and Spiritual Means". Brother Vijayananda emphasized that one must

not wait for others to take action; each of us can and should.

The pledge of Nonviolence was administered next and all participants solemnly took the pledge.

The participants then walked around the Lake to the Gandhi Samadhi. Over 25 members participated.

The event was made possible because of the support from the Self Realization Fellowship members, especially Susan Derby, who helped plan and organize the event. Our heartfelt thanks to The Self

Realization Fellowship for their support.

Volunteers of Shanti Fund (VOSF) have been reaching out to many Long Island schools for over 10 years in order to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence. Each year more and more schools

throughout the Long Island make a special effort to participate and involve all students for several days.

This year over 13 school districts participated in the “Peace on the Planet” celebration from

September 21st to October 8th.

The event began with observance of International Day of Peace on September 21st by Long Wood

Schools by creating a large human peace symbol involving 1500 students and releasing white doves. William Floyd Schools in Mastic expanded to a five day celebrating involving each day, “Peace in

Me”, “Peace in Our Community”, “Peace in Our Schools”, “Peace in our Country” and “Peace on the Planet”. On September 30th Girl Scouts of Suffolk County had a special celebration at Camp Edey.

On October 1st many schools celebrated a day of Peace on the Planet. Most students wore white for peace, the students created peace wall in many schools describing peace quotes and many different peace activities were carried out. All schools had an artwork competition within the

school & each school submitted their best poster for the final competition. They were displayed at the plaza level of H. Lee Dennison Building.

In addition, Mahatma Gandhi’s 141st birthday was celebrated as an International Day of

Nonviolence declared by the United Nations in 2007. VOSF joined a global celebration all over the world and every one took a ‘Pledge of Nonviolence’.

High school students from all participating schools joined us and presented each of their school programs on “Peace on the planet”. Kings Park students incorporated in a power point

presentation of global multitude of problems in the game of ‘Jeopardy’. For the second year they were declared a winner with the best presentation. School programs continued on Tuesday, when

Freeport schools had a big celebration and Bay Port Schools as well as Port Jefferson Schools planned on October 8th due to their homecoming. Thousands of students and more and more

schools on Long Island look forward each year for a creative way of celebrating peace on Gandhi Jayanthi and honor all world peace leaders.

Organized annually by the Mahatma Gandhi Canadian Foundation (www.gandhi.ca) the banquet brought together Edmontonians animated by Gandhi’s pioneering teachings on non-violence, social

equity, human dignity, and a culture of peace.

About 400 people from about 20 different communities participated in the banquet on October 2nd, 2010 at Delta South Hotel in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada following a garlanding of Gandhiji's

statue located in front of main downtown library.

Shri Satya Brata Das, a well known journalist, writer and author, was the key note speaker. He outlined Gandhian values and their application to current problems. It was an outstanding speech

which touched the hearts of every person who attended this function and Shri Das received a standing ovation a few times during his talk. The guests included representatives from 3 levels of

government and some foreign diplomats.

The peace festival was started in 1993, a year before the celebration of the 125th anniversary of Gandhi's birthday and has been held annually on a weekend closest to Gandhi's birth day (October 2). On October 2 2010, the 18th annual Gandhi Peace Festival was celebrated at the Hamilton City

Hall. The theme of the festival this year was "The Power of Nonviolence".

Conducted by the McMaster University students to increase peace education, build solidarity among collaborating campus organizations and foster a culture of peace, the festival started with a

lecture by Dr. Graeme MacQueen on “The fictional basis of the war on terror” on September 29 2010 at the Health Sciences Centre, Room HSC-1A06, McMaster University. On Saturday, (Oct 2),

the festival moved to the Hamilton City Hall with a Peace and Justice Fair involving community organizations.

Dr. Yaser Haddara, Professor of Electrical Engineering addressed the gathering followed by a peace walk through downtown Hamilton, a free vegetarian lunch of Indian food, and entertainment. The day also marked the celebration of the International Day of Nonviolence. MacPeaceWeek activities continued throughout the week (October 4-8) - consisting of a range of celebratory activities during

the lunch hours and public lectures and workshops during evenings.

In addition to McMaster University, other sponsors were the India-Canada Society (Hamilton), and the City of Hamilton.

Submissions of articles, poems and reports on peace themes were also invited to be included in the annual publication of Gandhi Peace Foundation called "Living Gandhi Today".

On the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi's 141st birth anniversary the Frankfurt Gandhi Talks were continued on 2-3rd October 2010 in the hall of Ev. Dreifaltigkeitsgemeinde at Frankfurt/ Main, Germany. This was a free event in German language organized and carried out jointly by Indo German Cooperation, GandhiServe Foundation and Hessian Foundation for Peace and Conflict

Research. This year’s topic was "Gandhi and Jesus".

On Saturday, 2 October, Dr. Jona Aravind Dohrmann (Indo German Cooperation) gave a welcome speech and introduced the programme and speakers to the 75 guests. The "Lightning of the Lamp" was done by Prof. Cherian Kurian, Chennai, India, and words of welcome were given by the Indian Consul General of Frankfurt/Main. This was followed by a lecture by Dr. Wolfgang Sternstein on

"Gandhi and Jesus - the end of fundamentalism".

After a break with Indian tea, coffee and snacks a panel discussion took place about “The Ethics of Mahatma Gandhi and Jesus – a comparison and relevance today.” The lecture was followed by a

get together and a superb Indian dinner.

The Valsesia meetup was a celebration of the 24th anniversary of the "People's March for a Non-Violent Society" which took place in Valsesia in 1986, the International Year of Peace and an

observance of the International Day of Nonviolence.

27 people attended the meetup in Borgosesia (Valsesia European Community) on the 2nd of October, remembering the values and principles of the 1986 Peace March for a Non-Violent Society,

when, celebrating the International Year of Peace, Gandhi In Action International organized the March asking local people to build a peaceful, non-violent community to share the goal of a global

peaceful world. After the reading of the Pledge of Nonviolence, a discussion was started and all agreed that acting locally, living globally and thinking positively, all could see that in the world there is more love than hate, more peace than war, and more non-violence than violence. All

present declared their willingness to meet again next year inviting their friends.

Dhwani Jaisankar, a 12 year old student at KRMM School in Chennai was inspired to participate in

the International Day of Nonviolence observance and approached her School Headmistress for

permission to conduct an event at school. With encouragement from the school administration, a

few students got together and organized the event.

The event was a celebration of the International Day of Nonviolence, Gandhi Jayanthi and the

birthday of Lal Bahadur Shastri as all three events occur on the same day. The show began with

music by drummer Kishore and keyboard player Nagaraj, both class XI students followed by a quiz

on Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri.

The students in the audience were then given 2 minutes to gather their thoughts on the

International Day of Nonviolence and then participate in a discussion. Most students felt that given

all the violence and terrorism around the world, the need of the hour was Nonviolence. This was a

good segway to taking the pledge of Nonviolence, a means to the end of achieving world peace. All

students rose and took the pledge solemnly.

These students set a good example on how the new generation can take the lead towards

embracing Nonviolence for lasting peace and harmony in the world.

Candle Vigil for Nonviolence, Solidarity & A Multicultural Sweden

Gandhi remarked: "I do not want my house to be walled in on all sides and my windows to be stuffed. I want the cultures of all the lands to be blown about my house as freely as possible."

A candle vigil was held to encourage multicultural tolerance and greater participation of the

Swedish people in the world as a whole.

The Indian Association Geneva (IAG) organized its annual India-Fest event to commemorate the International Day of Nonviolence at the Ariana Park, Geneva and the 3rd anniversary of the

unveiling of the Gandhi statue in Geneva while celebrating 60 years of Swiss-India friendship treaty and the ‘joie de vivre’ in peaceful and tranquil Switzerland!

The program included releasing of white balloons as a symbol of peace and nonviolence, followed by a cultural program and Authentic Indian cuisine dinner.

The event coincided with the “Traditional day” celebrations at the College. Nearly 100 students along with the other faculty members had an opportunity to listen to the presentation.
