ADDRESS SERVICE REQUESTED
My father was interested in trading stocks and commodities all his life. When he was younger, the successful trader was often the one who could uncover information about a company or commodity. When the internet came into existence, my father subscribed to a huge number of online stock reports. In fact, he subscribed to so many, he couldn’t read them all. What had been an asset became a liability. In Baton Rouge, many lunch places have all you can eat buffets. I enjoy eating, and so when I go to those places I end up eating too much. I eat past
the point of satiation, and even past the point of enjoyment. I know it is bad for my health, and I try to avoid going to buffets. But when I go, it is very hard to resist going back for one more plate of food. For most of human existence, getting enough to eat was the biggest worry. Of course, there are still people in the world who have to worry about starvation. But for more people than ever before, obtaining food is not the first priority in life. Now that food is readily available, our instinct to gorge, and to seek out fats and sugars has become a liability.I read once that in the Middle Ages, 41 people had to work full time to produce enough food for 40 people to survive. With devices such as washing machines, trucks, farm machinery, and computers, it is easier than ever before to get our jobs done. So why do we have less time than ever before?I was speaking to someone at the synagogue who wanted to learn Shabbat prayers. I suggested she take five minutes a night to recite a prayer, until she had learned it. She earnestly assured me that she was much too busy to spend five minutes a day on something new.In the Advocate recently, there was an article about a businesswoman who reorganized her life. She picked out the five things in her life that were most important to her. Whenever she was about to do something, she asked herself if it was connected to one of her five core interests or not.It seems to me that this would not guarantee a life that was not crazily busy. What if one of your five things was tikkun olam, improving the world? You would never run out of more to do. What if one of your five things was keeping up with new TV shows? That would not guarantee a deep and meaningful life.Yet it seems like a really good exercise. What are the five most important things in your life? Try to decide if the things you are doing are promoting those five things or are extraneous to them. It might help you feel less busy if you cut out those things that really are not central to what is most important to you. I know that

DON’T LET LIFE GET IN THE WAY OF LIVING
I define “life” as that which happens on a day to day basis. “Living”, however, is making the most out of who we are and as what we think God would like from us.As the Mishna tells us, “Whoever saves one life, it is as if he saved the world.” But is that all there is? Doesn’t God want us to enjoy, excel, be happy and excited? Life can be tough, painful, difficult and frustrating. Life is not fair or equal. So, can’t we be happy? Dennis Prager, in “Happiness is a Serious Problem”, says that we have a moral obligation to be “as happy as we can be.” Rabbi Joseph Telushkin in “The Book of Jewish Values” says that as long as we act morally and generously, we have every right to enjoy life.We have choices. We can “settle.” We can make the most out of what we have. We can be a seed that blooms into a beautiful flower. If we are God’s messengers and do tikkun olam and save the world, don’t you think God wants us to be happy? Don’t you think he wants us to cherish life? Take a chance. Run a marathon. Climb a mountain. So
Sisterhood’s February PJ Havdalah was well attended and everyone enjoyed the music, crafts and sweat treats. A special thanks to Judy Ginsburgh for joining us for this event. The Corned Beef Sandwich sale is just around the corner. The call for brownies has been mailed as have tickets to sell and of course an invitation to the famous sandwich making party. This event can only be successful if the whole congregational family participates. So please, sell those tickets, bake those brownies, and definitely come and enjoy time with friends on Saturday, March 14th at the sandwich making party. The fun doesn’t stop there, though. Sandwich makers are needed again on Sunday, March 15th and drivers are always needed the following Monday and Tuesday to make deliveries. New this year is the ability to place orders via our webpage Bethshalom1.wix.com/cbss. Go check it out and share it!
As soon as the corned beef is put away preparations will begin for Passover. More information on Second Night Seder is forthcoming, but we hope that everyone will be able to join us. In the meantime we are always in need of people to sign up for Onegs. If you are able to host, please give Mirra Miller a call and she will sign you up. One more final note of business, if you have “garage sale” items, donations can be brought to Here Today Gone Tomorrow located at Burbank and Bluebonnet. Let them know you are bringing items in on behalf of the BSS Sisterhood and we will receive 50% of the sales. The account number for Beth Shalom is 699.We hope to see everyone soon and often.Respectfully,Diane Dean
Sisterhood News
The President’s Cornerwhat if you don’t make it? You tried. You did your best. Pat yourself on the back. Be proud of yourself. God smiles and probably can’t ask anymore from his messengers.I enjoyed reading a book by Rabbi Sherre Hirsch who happens to be married to Jeff Hirsch, formerly of Baton Rouge. She says we are God’s agents. Her first step for tikkun olam and to tikkun bayit is to repair yourself. When you find your spark, when you find God and bring that excitement, you change yourself and everyone around you. You make the world better. You better all of God’s creations. When we die, will God ask us if we were the best we could be? God wants us to accept life, to enjoy, to make it exciting and to create sparks that spread. In Rabbi Hirsch’s book, “We Plan, God Laughs,” God does not mock. God smiles when we overcome. Rabbi Hirsch says, “God wants me to dream and believe that I can become more, and he wants me to take action and move forward. God wants me to enrich his creation. God wants me to laugh.”In the end, she suggests that God simply wants “us” to be “us.” When we are all that we’ve tried to be and we are happy, then God sees this and realizes that it is good, then “God and I will laugh together.”
Rabbi’s Message (con’t)many people tell me that Gd and Judaism are very important to them. Yet they cannot find the time to come to services.Time is one of our most important resources. We have so many ways to save time, and yet here too it seems that an asset has become a liability. Just as no one can keep me from eating too much but me, no one can ensure you use your time wisely but you. Time well spent is a life well spent. See you in Shul!

RegaRding Hospital Visits
Our Rabbi is eager to keep in touch with members of the congregation who are in the hospital or recuperating at home. As recent legislation prevents hospitals from circulating patient’s names, we rely on you to call the synagogue office and let us know when you, a family member or friend are in the hospital and would welcome a visit from Rabbi Gardner.

a complete and speedy recovery.Joanne Kleiman

Announcements & RemindersBe happy, it’s Adar. This is the month of Purim. Our students are getting ready for our annual Shalach Manot fundraiser and mitzvah project. We’ll fill the bags during school and deliver some while the brotherhood helps us out by delivering the rest. We’ll be talking about the story of Esther and enjoying our own mask and costume holiday. We hope that all of our students will be able to join the congregation for Purim services – they’re on a Wednesday and we won’t have Hebrew school. A month after Purim is Pesach. Can you name the holidays between Purim and Pesach? We can. Rosh Chodesh (the new moon) and Shabbat. On Shabbat morning, March 21, the religious school will help lead services. In some places this might be considered a problem. People might think that if the kids are going to be leading the service, it will be a service for kids and the adults who regularly attend might consider staying home. Not at Beth Shalom. Allowing are children to help lead services is preparing them to be our leaders. We know that this is a
time for the entire congregation to come together and share in one of our main purposes, preserving and perpetuating our Beth Shalom family. At the same time we can share in the wonderful set of mitzvot that help us celebrate the joy that is Shabbat. Join us for Shabbat and a pot-luck Kiddush luncheon. Finally, as our congregation continues to demonstrate our wonderful inter-generational culture, please remind your youngest friends that we will have Mazel Tots again on Sunday, March 22. It is always impressive to walk down the hall after Mazel Tots and religious school and watch as our confirmation kids leave the library and adult learners take their place. L’dor va’dor. From generation to generation.B’ShalomEllen Bush

In the month of February, Rayner’s students learned about pets, farm animals, community places and peoples, ABCs and 123s, colors and shapes, Tu B’Shevat, and President’s Day. We also continued our lesson in values and manners. On February 26th, Dr. Robin Levy visited our school and shared the importance of healthy habits when it comes to caring for our teeth. Dr. Levy also provided our school with toothbrushes, toothpaste, and coloring books so they can continue to practice healthy cleaning habits at home. We also provided Holiday Care on February 16th and 17th. March will be filled with adventure as we prepare for Purim. On Friday, March 6th the children will march in a parade at Shabbat. The children will display their costumes and their decorated masks. They will also get to sing songs and use their grogers. Along will celebrating Purim this month, our children will learn about insects, transportation, ABCs and 123s, colors and shapes, and the season of spring. They will also participate in a Mitzvah project. This is an opportunity to teach the importance of sharing and giving throughout the community as they collect items and create a Mitzvah basket. Throughout the month of March, they will collect items for community places such as the fire departments, retirement homes, and hospitals. Greetings fromTheRayner Center
This past month, we were very excited to go to the first regional event of the year in Memphis, Winter Kallah. During the event, we helped out areas of the community and also got a chance to learn about some of the cultural history of Memphis! BaRFTY is very excited for our upcoming regional event in Atlanta this month, where we will be meeting with other NFTY groups around the country. We can’t wait!

Todah Rabbah!Rabbi Gardner, Steven Winkler, Rayner Learning Center Board, Cathy Melanson

Can you name the holidays between Purim and
