NEWS Nominees sought for 1991 awards The Honors & Awards Committee of the AAE is calling for nominations of individuals for the Edgar D. Coolidge Award, the Louis I. Grossman Award and the Ralph F. Sommer Award to be presented at the 1991 Annual Session in Wash- ington D.C. Criteria for the awards are as follows: Edgar D. Coolidge Award 1) The award is to be given annually at the Coolidge Memorial Luncheon. 2) Recipient must be a living member of the AAE. 3) Individual must have had active participation in the AAE during his/her professional lifetime. 4) Individual must have displayed leadership and exemplary dedication to dentistry and endodontics. Ralph F. Sommer Award 1) The award is given for recognition to the principal author(s) of a publication of specific significance to the science and art of endodontology. 2) The award will not necessarily be given out annually but whenever an especially significant paper or book is identified. 3) The award may be given for articles describing developments or advances in methodology and/or materials and devices and for constructive influence on clinical practice. 4) The paper(s) need not necessarily be based on research, but should be philosophical, social, technological, etc., pertaining to endodontics. Louis I. Grossman Award 1) The award is given for cumulative publication of significant research studies which have made an extraordinary contribution to endodontology. 2) The individual is to be a member of the AAE. 3) The award need not be given annually. 4) Presentation of the award will be made during the annual session of the Association. All recommendations with supporting documentation must be submitted to Dr. Donald E. Arens, Honors & Awards Committee, c/o American Association of Endodontists, 211 E. Chicago Avenue, Suite 1501, Chicago, IL 60611 no later than February 1, 1990. The Honors & Awards Committee will act on all nominations and submit recommendations, as appropriate, to the Board of Directors of the American Association of Endodontists at its meeting in April 1990. CALL FOR RESEARCH ABSTRACTS Endodontic Research Seminars, Poster Presentations and Table Clinics Each year at the AAE Annual Session, many fine research papers, poster presentations and table clinics are presented by a number of investiga- tors. To "streamline" these activities, a format closely patterned after that of the IADR has been produced to screen and select the research and clinical presentations. An oral research seminar presen- tation is a 15-minute presentation, in a lecture room, of a clinical or basic science investigation using projected slides. The paper should be presented in 10-12 minutes and the remaining time allowed for a question-and- answer session. A poster presentation is a 5-10 minute presentation of a clinical or basic science investigation displayed on a poster board measuring 4 x 8 feet. The presenter explains the project using the information on one poster on a one-to-one or small audience basis and should be avail- able during the entire poster session. Models or projected slides may not be used during po~ter presentations. AAE members only may present poster presentations. For research seminars and poster presentations, each prospective participant will be sent a form on which to type the title of the presentation, name(s) of investigators, involved institution(s), and an abstract of about 250 words. The abstract should state the objectives of the investigation, the experimental method used, and the essential results and conclusions. The abstracts for research semi- nars and poster presentations that are accepted for the Annual Session will be published in the April issue of the Journal of Endodontics, thus becoming part of the permanent record of our profession. Published abstracts should also enable our members to participate in seminars of their interest at our annual session. Those interested in participating in the research seminars or poster presentations can obtain the neces- sary forms by writing to the Chairman of the Committee on Research and Scientific Affairs, Dr. Mahmoud Torabinejad, c/o American Association of Endodontists, 211 E. Chicago Ave., Suite 1501, Chicago, IL 60611. DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION ON OR BEFORE NOVEMBER 15, 1989. A table clinic consists of present- ing a simple, time saving procedure, technique, or an interesting scientific phenomenon in 5-10 minutes on a one-to-one or small audience basis. Projected slides, models, radiographs, etc. are allowed during the table clinics. AAE members only may present table clinics. For table clinics, each prospective participant will be sent a form on which to type the title of the clinic, name(s) of investigator(s), involved institution(s) and an abstract of about 150 words.
