The soft original material that was used to make the permanent slides of Tempere et Peragallo's 2nd

edition of "Diatomees du Monde Entier" is available for study at the Laboratoire de Geologic of theMuseum National d'Histoire Naturelle, Paris. This paper gives a list of the localities where the sampleswere taken and a list of the new taxa described from these samples.

INTRODUCTION

The book published by Ternpere and Peragallo under the title "Diatomees du Monde Entier,Edition 2" was actually issued in several fascicles of various sizes between 1907 and 1915 (see Hanna1930 and Table I). The text (480 pages) consists of descriptions of diatom assemblages from ca. 900localities, fossil or recent, freshwater and marine, from many parts of the world, followed by 68 pagescontaining a classified list of localities (Table des Provenances; pages 1 to 8) and species (Table desEspeces, pages 9 to 68).

Several sets of slides corresponding to these localities were made by Tempere (Fig. I) at hisresidence in Grez-sur-Loing, near Fontainebleau, where he resided between 1902 and 1914, anddistributed with the fascicles. Each set comprises a total of 1000 slides, numbered no. I to no. 1000(Fig. 2). Complete sets of slides are rare. According to Cowan & Stafleu (1986) they can be found inBerlin (Dahlem), Farlow Herbarium (Cambridge, USA), Geneva (Conservatoire et Jardin Botanique)and Academy of Natural Science (Philadelphia). Sets of slides are also curated at the British Museum, the Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle (Paris). The set of slides from the New York BotanicalGarden is now at the California Academy of Sciences (San Francisco). The material used to make theseslides, however, is unique and is conserved at the Laboratory of Geology of the Museum Nationald'Histoire Naturelle (Paris).

The computerized database of verified diatom names at the Diatom Collection of the CaliforniaAcademy of Sciences was used to search for all names published in "Diatornees du Monde Entier, ed.2". We find (Table 2) that 192 new taxa were described in this work (including 68 new species, 123new varieties, 15 new forms, and 4 new genera: Annelus, Azpeitia, Petitia and Tempereai. The names

There are also ea. 3000 uncovered smear slides (material smeared on a cover slide but not coveredwith a cover slip). Unlike the vials, the "uncovered" slides are not numbered but the packages in whichthey are kept bear locality information. In some case it is possible to match them with the preparationnumbers in "edition 2" in other cases matches are ambiguous, or no matches are found. Some"uncovered" slides correspond to numbers of missing vials.

The permanent and uncovered slides can be examined by visitors at the MNHN. Loans ofslides (permanent or uncovered) are not possible. Visitors, however, have the possibility to samplesmall parts of the uncovered slides at the MNHN. Loans of small fractions of the dry material (invials) can be requested from Mme Servant.

NOMENCLATURAL ISSUES

Types

According to the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature (Greuter et al. 2000): "The type(holotype, lectotype, or neotype) of a name of a species or infraspecific taxon is either a singlespecimen conserved in one herbarium or other collection or institution, or an illustration" (Art. 8.1)."For the purpose of typification a specimen is a gathering, or part of a gathering, of a single species orinfraspecific taxon made at one time, disregarding admixtures (see Art. 9.12). It may consist of a singleplant, parts of one or several plants, or of multiple small plants. A specimen is usually mounted on asingle herbarium sheet or in an equivalent preparation, such as a box, packet, jar or microscope slide"(Art. 8.2). Thus for diatoms a specimen can be either a single valve, or a slide (i.e. a population on aslide).

The material from which a taxon was described constitutes the original material and if the authorstated that the name was based on a particular specimen or population, then that is the holotype. Thus, when Tempere & Peragallo described a new taxon and cited slide numbers and locality, because theydid not select one in particular, the slides (and extant material) from that locality are syntypes. Bydesignating one of these as the lectotype, lectotypification (with the choice of a specimen or slide)makes the application of the name certain (see also Ross 1993). Only lectotypification with the choiceof a specimen (a diatom individual) on a particular slide will make the application of the nameunambiguous and might be preferable.

Leetotypes for the taxa described in "Diatomees du Monde Entier, ed. 2" have already beenproposed. For example, Fryxell et al. (1986, p. 6) designated Tempere & Peragallo's slide 660f (Osuna,Spain) from the Paris Museum (presumably l.aboratoire de Cryptogamie) as the lectotype of Azpeitiateniperei M. Peragallo and illustrated 2 specimens from this slide. This choice may be further narrowedto a single valve by way of subsequent lectotypification (see Art. 9.14).

Table 4. List of the tubes with clean dry material and list of uncovered smear slides from Diatomccs du Monde Entier ed. 2 at the Museum d'Histoire Naturcllc,Paris.

This table consists of 2 parts, columns 1-4 (left) with information regarding the dry rcsiducs, columns 5-8 (right) with information regarding theuncovered smear slides.

Residues (tubes) arc numbered (1-1000) and bear locality information; they thus can be unequivocally matched with the sample numbers in "Diatornccs duMonde Enticr",

Packages of uncovered smear slides only bear locality information and the matches provided here arc only our best hypothesis and arc sometimesuncertain.Col. 1-4 (dry rcsiducs): Col. I. Sample number as indicated on the tubes. These numbers match the permanent slide numbers. Col. 2. Names of localities asindicated on the tubes. Col. 3. of an additional 444 new taxa also first appeared in the fascicles (Table 3) but were not validlypublished because no descriptions were provided. "Diatornees du Monde Entier, ed. 2" is also the placeof valid publication of99 new combinations.

Edition I of this work, entitled "Diatomees Collection J. Ternpere & H. Peragallo" was publishedin Paris between 1889-1895 (according to the British Museum, see Hanna 1930). This first editioncontains lists of species from 625 separate collections. The text consists of 304 pages followed by anindex of localities and an index of taxa (62 pages). Sets of 625 slides accompanied the text. Six newtaxa are described, 30 names of new taxa appeared but are not validly published by lack of adescription, 21 new combinations are made. The two editions have almost nothing in common: "theyare apparently catalogs of entirely different collections of diatoms and, although the same localitiesmay appear in both, the lists of species show that different material has been studied in the two cases"(Hanna 1930).

CONSERVATION OF THE MATERIAL

A complete set of slides (1000 slides) for Diatornees du Monde Entier, cd. 2, was purchased byORSTOM in 1986, and is curated at the Laboratoire de Geologic du Museum National d'HistoireNaturelle by Mme S. Servant. In 1990, the MNHN purchased the clean material (vials) that was usedby Tempere for making the slides of Edition 2. There are about 500 vials, each containing ea. I g of dryclean material. The vials are numbered and labeled with locality description making it easy to matchpermanent slides and vials (Table 4). Most vials can be matched with localities and slide numbers of"Diatomees du Monde Entier, ed. 2", other vials cannot be matched and might correspond to ed.l.

Table 3. List of invalid names proposed in Diatomees du Monde Entier, ed. 2 (names invalidly published).Table generated from the computerized database of verified diatom names at the California Academy of Sciences.

NOMENCLATURAL ISSUES 397

Lectotypes have been proposed for other taxa. It was not the scope of this paper to research andestablish a list of all of them. It appears, however, that most of the names proposed in Edition 2 do nothave lectotypes. In order to avoid future problems, designation of lectotypes should be taken only inthe light of an understanding of the group concerned (see Rec. 9A.2 and other recommendations underArt. 9).

Invalid names

"Diatomees du Monde Entier, ed. 2" is also the place where 444 new names first appearedwithout description (Table 3). These names were invalid (nomina nuda) when originally published.According to the Catalogue ofYan Landingham (1967-1979), the vast majority of these names did notappear again in the literature and thus remain invalid. In some cases, however, the names werevalidated by the publication of descriptions in subsequent articles. Examples of subsequent validationof invalid names in 2nd edition include:

Actinoptychus kymatodes var. radiolata Forti. Name invalidly published in Tempere & Peragallo 1912,p. 337 (no. 696-698), later validated by Forti 1913, p. 1584,5/2 (original locality: Licata)

Actinoptychus kymatodes var. tetramera Forti. Name invalidly published in Ternpere & Peragallo,1912, p. 330 (no. 696-698). The name also appears as a nomen nudum in Forti 1912, p. 81 and wasfinally validated in Forti (1913), p. 1590,5/9, 11, 12. Forti (1913) indicates as original material (type ?)no. 673-5, numbers corresponding to the locality "Monte Gibbio" in "Diatomees du Monde Entier".

Actinopychus minutus forma major Forti. Name invalidly published in Tempere & Peragallo 1912, p.330 (no. 673-675). The name also appears as a nomen nudum in Forti 1912, p. 81 and was validated byForti 1913, p. 1587, 5/3 (original material, number 673-5, Monte Gibbio)

Coscinodiscus decrescens var. robustior Ternpere & Peragallo. The name was invalidly published byTempere & Peragallol910, p. 215, no. 401-402 and was validated in Peragallo & Peragallo 1911,p.IO.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

The senior author wishes to thank Mr Claude Tempere for providing the photographs (figures Iand 2), the IRD (ex ORSTOM) and the Museum d'Histoire Naturelle for purchasing the slidecollection (1986) and the unfixed material (1990) respectively. She is particularly grateful to Mr PatriceRoederer (ORSTOM board of Directors) and Mr Jacques Fabries (Director of MNHN) for their supportin obtaining the funds for these purchases. The computerized database of diatom names was funded byNSF Grant # DEB-9505269. We are indebted to an anonymous reviewer for helpful comments.
