President’s Welcome

From now on, I am going to take a position that puts human rights as the most important value of all. It is interesting to note, however, that in most cases, secular values go along with human values, while religious values not so much.
I am appalled by people who claim that morality is dictated by religion. Many of our animal relatives have stronger morals than a lot of religious people. This includes vampire bats, who share blood with other less fortunate members of their clan. Dogs have some of the strongest family values you will find. We can learn a lot about ourselves from animals.
Tom Kellogg President, Boulder Atheists Director, Camp Quest Colorado Accountant, Richard Dawkins Foundation
We are learning a lot as we go along this journey known as the Secular Movement. It is gaining momentum, and there are some important players out there. However, one of the lessons I have learned lately is that not all supposedly freethinking atheist humanist types are really on board the right train. To me, what is even more important than just supporting secular values, is a much higher principle of supporting all human values, and not all secular groups share this higher value. Some secular organizations support platforms that do not support women's rights or gay rights or people's right to choose what is right for themselves. What makes this even more puzzling is that much of this narrow minded thinking comes from religion. To prove this point, just look at who is trying to push anti-‐human legislation into law.

City of Boulder and Eco-‐Cycle partner to meet flood recovery needs by enhancing services at the Center for Hard to Recycle Materials Beginning on Saturday, Sept. 28, the Center for Hard to Recycle Materials (CHaRM) will offer an expanded drop-‐off site at 5030 “Old” Pearl St. This enhanced recycling service will be provided in an effort to address the unprecedented volume of electronic waste generated by recent flooding in Boulder. The additional site is being made possible by a partnership between the City of Boulder and Eco-‐Cycle and will be available through Saturday, Oct. 5. All processing fees for flood-‐damaged materials from Boulder residents will be waived. Saturday volumes are expected to be high, so organizers recommend that residents plan to come on weekdays, if possible. “We are streamlining our system as much as we can to get people in and out,” said Dan Matsch, manager of Eco-‐Cycle and CHaRM. “Our top priority is to provide the community with a way to easily and properly dispose of flood-‐damaged items that should not go in the landfill or could be recycled, such as electronics, appliances with Freon and scrap metal.” CHaRM will be open during its regular hours, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Saturday. All residents are directed to the main CHaRM site at 5030 “Old” Pearl St., one block north of Pearl Parkway off 49th Street. CHaRM specializes in the recycling of “hard-‐to-‐recycle” materials such as: · electronics, including small appliances; · appliances containing Freon, such as refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners; · scrap metal; · large durable plastics; and · white block Styrofoam. To be accepted for recycling, these items must be rinsed free of mud and cannot contain excess water. Wet paper and books cannot be recycled and must be composted or taken to a landfill. CHaRM cannot accept wet or moldy clothing or plastic bags. Visit www.ecocycle.org/charm for recycling guidelines and a more detailed list of items that CHaRM can accept. Hazardous waste cannot be recycled at CHaRM and must be recycled at the Boulder County Hazardous Waste Management Facility at 1901 63rd St. Visit www.bouldercounty.org/env/hazwaste for information on hours and acceptable items.

Help Needed: Hi fellow atheists, My home in Longmont at 9th and Mountainview in the Greens subdivsion got flooded. We finally got most of it cleaned. Now we need some assistance in starting to fix/rebuild. Anyone know anyone that can do a 6 ft. fence reasonable $ price? We lost our whole fence and we back up to Airport Rd. Our basement totally flooded, lost mega things down there, our living room had the St. Vrain River run through it, lost flooring, woodwork, furniture. Lots of drywall gone now. Landscaping is totaled out, so is our car. Our phone line is down, but you can contact me at [email protected] Thanks! Kandis R.
From Linda Rose by way of the Denver Atheists: "I just spoke with Sen. John Kefalas's aide Lisa Smith. She is coordinating clean-‐up efforts in Lyons where they are helping people with devastated homes (and no flood insurance) to prepare their property for rebuilding. This effort saves homeowners about $10,000 per home. Any interested volunteers should write: [email protected] " These floods have been the worst in recorded history for our state. The community response has been amazing. When it comes down to tragedies like this one's religious and political views no longer matter. If anyone needs or is willing to help please contact the e-‐mail above ([email protected]) for further information.
During the month of August, the treasury of Boulder Atheists has increased by over $200. We have annual dues from five members, and a $100 donation from Camp Quest Colorado. The only expenses we've booked are in the form of bank fees and paypal.
The current treasury balance, as of 9/10/13, is $2,504.18.
We're preparing new methods of online dues-‐payment via Paypal. These will become available with new membership options in October.

Activities Program
Autumn is the perfect time to play! Special events, and injuries, and floods, oh my! For weeks now, complications have stalled our Boulder Atheists/Humanists of Colorado outdoor program. We will get things back on track very soon with some fun activities. With extensive road closures blocking recreational access to Indian Peaks, we will focus much of our attention on lower altitudes. Cooler weather and glorious fall foliage will make hikes around Boulder extra special. A cycling tour of Boulder (via bike paths) is planned, with leisurely stops for coffee, tea, or lunch. So pump up those tires and dig out your helmet! If you have any ideas or suggested activities for the outdoor program, please pass them on, preferably in written form, to any BA board member at one of our events, post a comment on Meetup, or speak to one of the outdoor program coordinators, Gunda Starkey and Jim Barron.

Eastern Boulder Events
Reaching Out to Eastern Boulder There are many of us in the eastern part of Boulder county that cannot always go to events in the city of Boulder. So Beverly Stevens and I (James Barron) have been hosting events for the rest of us. Beverly has a sushi dinner at Bao Asian Fusion and Sushi Bar in Louisville on the second Monday of the month. They have a $2 for 2 piece deal that is not to miss. It's good food at a good price with good company. Come on over and enjoy the tastes of Asia with us. I've been doing a rotating dinner exploring the different places in Louisville and Lafayette. Ranging from Thai, Mexican, Chinese, and good, old American, we've been sampling a nice variety. Turn-‐out has been great. Suggestions are always welcome.
Denver’s Secular Hub
The Secular Hub: Extending community, expanding opportunity -‐ by Gunda Starkey If Boulder Atheists can be distilled to one central concept, it's this: community. We join with others to share ideas, to learn, to do good works, to be supported, to be challenged, and to share some laughs along the way. How can we possibly improve upon this? By building a network of like-‐minded people beyond our own city. By reaching out to other secular groups and joining forces to accomplish things that we couldn't easily achieve alone. It's much the same reason we joined Boulder Atheists to begin with, but on a somewhat broader scale. About a year ago, a group of determined members of area freethought organizations decided to tackle this goal with a visionary, first-‐of-‐its-‐kind project: creating a dedicated physical space where area secular groups could hold meetings, host speakers, have social events, showcase entertainment, organize community service projects, or just hang out and share great conversation. The result: the Secular Hub, a 1600 sq. ft. facility in north Denver, which opened on Darwin Day (February 12th) this past spring. It is truly becoming a "hub" for Denver/ Boulder metro area humanists, agnostics, atheists, skeptics, and freethinkers. Boulder Atheists has been part of this project almost from the start. BA held a party at the Hub in April, participated in the planning of the Hub-‐sponsored Colorado Secular Conference, and I have been serving on the Hub board as a representative of Boulder Atheists. As a member of the Hub, Boulder Atheists is able to use that space whenever we wish (assuming availability) for no fee. Other groups that have held meetings and events at the Secular Hub include the Humanists of Colorado, Denver Atheists, Denver/ metro Freedom From Religion Foundation, Denver/Boulder Secular Parents group, Recovering from Religion, Freethought Exchange, Americans United for Separation of Church and State, and Lifering (a secular sobriety support group). Rather than filling their meeting space needs through a patchwork of libraries, restaurants, and UU churches, these groups now have a reliable place that is truly their own. The fact that this space is dedicated, full-‐time, to the freethought movement creates a sense of community like nothing else quite can. The highlights of the first six months of the Hub include:
• Talks and book signings by noted authors Katherine Stewart and Sean Faircloth • Presentations by important speakers including Victor Stenger, Paul Bellanger, and Seth Andrews • Musical performances by nationally known artists Shelly Segal and Roy Zimmerman • A special visit from the world's most famous atheist, Richard Dawkins • Sponsorship of the 2013 Colorado Secular Conference
Denver’s Secular Hub (Cont.)
The Hub hosts some regular social events for its members, including a weekly movie night (on an extra-‐large screen, with surround sound) and monthly "Friday Hub Hang" (sometimes a potluck, occasionally a spaghetti dinner or other fun activity). Sundays are "Coffee and Community", where members may drop by, hang out, make new friends, and share what is virtually guaranteed to be interesting conversation. Hub also organizes community service projects, often in conjunction with member groups, such as tree plantings and local park cleanup projects. Plans are in the works to expand into other types of charitable efforts as well. And the Hub now has its own house band, Pale Blue, that performs at many Hub events. There are a couple of upcoming events at the Hub this fall worth special mention. On October 12th, the Hub will be hosting a very special fundraiser, the State of the Hub dinner. The proceeds from this elegant, catered meal will go toward the Hub's operating expenses for the coming year. That evening, we will premier the Hub's promotional video produced by Seth Andrews (The Thinking Atheist) when he was here to speak at the Colorado Secular Conference. There will also be live music by a great soft jazz band. Tickets to this very special event are $75 each and must be purchased by Oct. 6th at http://www.secularhub.com/state-‐of-‐the-‐hub-‐dinner/. Later in October, on the 26th, the Hub will host a Halloween costume party, "The Haunted Hub". While this event is still in the planning stages, you can expect a fun evening of treats, tricks, spooky decor, door prizes, creepy (but devilishly delicious) hors d'oeuvres, a cash bar, a costume contest, and blood-‐curdling surprises. Tickets will be $5 for Hub members and $10 for non-‐members and may be purchased at the door. Look for more details as the date approaches. Check Meetup for a full listing of upcoming Hub events at http:// www.meetup.com/SecularHub/. The Hub is also available to rent for private events such as weddings and commitment ceremonies; anniversary and retirement parties; and memorial gatherings. This spring the Hub hosted its first secular memorial service, a touching ceremony for a longtime member of local secular groups. Several registered humanist celebrants are available to officiate at these important life cycle ceremonies. The facility can seat 56-‐banquet style and 80-‐auditorium style. Amenities include ample free parking, Wi-‐Fi, an excellent video/sound system (including a 150 inch diagonal screen!), a piano, a well-‐stocked kitchen, and nearby catering. Its north Denver location, easy access from I-‐25 and I-‐70, and light rail only 1 1/2 block away make the Hub a good choice for events for which guests will be invited from both the north and south Denver/metro areas. You may contact me at [email protected] for more info. Both at an individual level and as organizations, we can be better and stronger together than we are alone. The Secular Hub is building community between diverse groups of Colorado freethinkers in a way that nothing else ever has. It brings us together; it gives us a sense of place and belonging; and it helps us to confidently raise our voice in defense of secular values. Boulder Atheists is a member group of the Hub and, by extension, the Hub is there for *you*. Find an event of interest; come check out the Hub at 3100 Downing, Denver; and consider joining as an individual member. With its motto of "Community, Reason, and Altruism", the Secular Hub is seeking not only to create a new model for meeting the needs of the freethought community, but to put a positive public face on secularism.
