Many people will recognize Gwen Sebastian from the reality show The Voice. She will perform at the 2012 Nodaway County Fair on Saturday, July 21, at 8:30 p.m. on the Main Stage.

Many voices contributed to Gwen Sebastian’s sudden and long-sought career growth, but which played the biggest part? Certainly her run on NBC’s hit singing competition The Voice was a huge boost. The sound of her coach and country superstar Blake Shelton offering a spot on his tour was equally sweet. One came in the form of a relative’s phone call, suggesting she attend an audition. There’s also the inner voice that brought her through a career cross-roads before the show was even a consideration. Most recently, there’s

the one that led her to a powerfully uplifting new single called “Met Him In A Motel Room.”

Underpinning each of those voices, however, is the unique vocal instru-ment belonging to Gwen Sebastian. It was that rich and emotionally taut sound that persuaded Shelton, sight-unseen, to fall in love with a little-known but already hard-at-work small town singer. And it was that voice that pushed and at times pulled Sebastian from other oppor-tunities and paths toward a career as a performer.

“I have always known, no matter what I was doing in my life, that I would be doing music,” Gwen says. The question, then, was simply to what degree. “I was at a crossroads,” she explains of a moment prior to trying out for The Voice. After performing more than 1,000 shows and earning a living, if not national

acclaim, Sebastian found herself considering a reordering of priori-ties.

The Hebron, North Dakota native had been in a similar situation be-fore, choosing to drop out of nurs-ing school and go all-in for music. That decision led to a record deal and her 2009 single “Hard Rain,” which was well-received by country radio and fans. She released her EP V.I.P. in 2010, and earned her place in the country music business with tireless touring. Her love of the road eventually blossomed to love on the road, as Sebastian and her drummer Louis Newman became an item. Hence, the crossroads.

“Continuing on the path of play-ing five shows a week was getting difficult,” Sebastian admits. Her successes to that point had all been hard-fought and continued to require relentless dedication. “The decision about whether or not to start a family was there,” she says. Partners professionally as well as personally – Newman is also Se-bastian’s producer – the two made a fateful choice. “ Let’s try this for another year or two and see where it takes us,” Gwen says. “And that’s when everything turned.”Just as her initial leap into the music business was validated by her early achievements, the decisive call to continue offered further assurance. “The Voice came so quickly,” she says. “I watched the show last year and loved it, but never thought much about it until my cousin called to tell me about the tryouts. I couldn’t make the Nashville audi-tion, so I went out to LA. There was

a long process from there.”That process culminated in her

national television debut, being chosen to join Team Blake and, eventually, a spot on Shelton’s tour. Along the way, her notoriety has exploded. “The platform has been amazing,” Gwen says. “After the blind audition my Twitter follow-ers grew immensely, and Blake has given me so many opportunities on the road. This has propelled my career so much faster than I would have imagined.”

Unlike so many television-bred aspirants, Sebastian doesn’t have to figure out the music business ropes. She’s already a successful road war-rior in her own right. And the final piece in the puzzle is new music that can connect the dots for her new

national following. The song is “Met Him In A Motel Room.”

“I knew I wanted to cut a song that had a story to it and meant something,” she says. “When I heard the first few lines, I thought I knew what this song was about, but then there’s a surprise in the chorus. I love those unexpected twists – even in the televisions shows I watch, that’s what I’m drawn to. In the end, it’s really a song about hope, and I’m all about that.”

Touring with Shelton, perform-ing her own dates and visiting radio stations in support of “Motel Room,” Sebastian has a busy year in front of her. And that’s exactly what she signed up for. “Having it all click doesn’t have to happen when you’re 17,” she says. “And if it had, I

wouldn’t have been ready for it all. I realized that if I didn’t try every-thing and really go for it, I might regret it. My time for this to happen is now and I’m embracing it. You don’t have to stop dreaming.”

Thankfully, for her and her new-

found fans, she listened to the voice that urged the dream forward. In so doing, she empowered the one that Shelton says “has the rare ability to combine power with passion.” For Gwen Sebastian, it’s always been about the voice.

Rickie Lee Tanner will return to the 2012 Nodaway County Fair Main Stage on Saturday, July 21, at 7:15 p.m. He also performed at the 2011 county fair.

Rickie Lee is known for his high energy performances that can only be rivaled by the likes of Garth Brooks and Jerry Lee Lewis. Rickie Lee Tanner is an entertainer. He believes that the crowd comes to see a “show” and give his all every night to make sure that everyone leaves with a smile on their face. He truly is an original.

Rickie Lee is more than just a singer. He is an accomplished song-writer and musician. He has won numerous singing and songwriting competitions. He has also made an

impressive showing in contests such as Nashville Star, and the Colgate

Country Showdown where he was a state finalist. Rickie has performed on television shows like Smart Country and Nashville On Stage. He has played on stages of all sizes while touring as a regional act, and has opened for many national per-formers as well.

His music really fits no genre. He has a country boy look with a rock and roll flair to his music. He is Americana through and through, and Americana can only be de-fined as the music of the people. If compared to similar musicians, you might describe him as a John Mellencamp, Bruce Springsteen, or a Tim McGraw.

Rickie Lee Tanner is a Missouri native. He grew up in Belton, Mis-

souri, a suburb of Kansas City, and currently resides just outside of Washington, Missouri. Currently, Rickie is touring the Midwest to promote the debut single off of his new album, the title track, Fast Lane. A previous demo recording of Fast Lane, has already hit #1 on the independent, unsigned artists chart as tracked by the music research team at soundclick.com.

The Little Mister and Miss Nodaway County Contest will be held on the Main Stage at 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 29. All three, four and five year olds who reside in Nodaway County or have grandparents who live in the county.

Early registration is encour-aged, but not required. Regis-

tration cost is $5 and all con-testants should check in before 5:45 p.m. on Thursday.

The winners of the con-test will ride in the Nodaway County parade on Saturday morning.

This year the Nodaway County Fair will host a Quilt Show and Contest in cooperation with the Krazy Quilters of Maryville. The Quilt Show will be open to the public on Thursday evening from 5 to 10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. The show will be held in the lower level of the County Administration Center on the northeast corner of the square.

The building is air-conditioned and has an elevator. Quilters of all ages are encouraged to enter their projects to be shown and/or judged in the following eight categories: Hand pieced/hand quilted; ma-chine pieced/hand quilted; machine pieced/machine quilted; baby quilts;

appliquéd quilts/machine or hand pieced; quilts made by youth, 18 years and younger; small quilts/wall hanging and antique quilts for show or bed turning program.

To enter quilts in the show, they should be brought to the Adminis-

tration Center, Wednesday, July 18, between noon and 7 p.m.Grand Prize-Best of Show will be awarded a $100 prize on Saturday evening. Judging will be conducted by visitors to the show. Quilts can be hung on the racks if those who ex-

hibit will put a four-inch wide sleeve on the back top of the quilt or they will be pinned with safety pins.

A Bed Turning Program will take place at 2 p.m. on Saturday in the lower level of the Administration Center. Exhibitors are encouraged, when registering their quilts, to also bring a one or two paragraph story about the quilt, whether it is an antique or a new quilt.

A national organization is pro-moting Quilts for Valor. These Valor Quilts are distributed to military personnel who have served our country. Krazy Quilters have made a half dozen of the Valor Quilts and one will be shown during the Bed Turning Program.

Touted as the break-out band of 2012, and recently signed to RCA Nashville, Bush Hawg is working on their debut CD with Music Row veteran and multi-platinum pro-ducer Michael Knox (producer of acts Jason Aldean, Trace Adkins, Montgomery Gentry, etc).

Rainbow Trout the Clown will again be at the 2012 Nodaway County Fair, after making her debut in 2011.

Rainbow Trout has been clowning around since 1989 in the Omaha, Neb. area.

For a small fee, Rainbow Trout will provide face painting, for

children 10 and under, on Friday evening, Saturday morning, as well as Saturday evening. There will be a variety of face painting options to choose from including Spiderman and other Superheros, as well as princesses, animals, flowers, fancy eyes and more.

July 19. The first show will begin at 6 p.m. Tuesday, featuring poultry.

Wednesday, July 18, the shows begin at 8:30 a.m. with the swine, The goat show begins at 2 p.m., followed by the sheep at 6 p.m.

The beef and dairy show is sched-uled to begin at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 19.

All registration takes place the same day as the show. Registration for beef, dairy, goats, sheep and swine is

$6 per head. Poultry registration is $2 per head.

The Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion of each show will receive a jacket, which has been spon-sored by local merchants. The Grand

Champion also receives a $50 pre-mium check. Each child participating in the show will receive a Nodaway County Fair Livestock t-shirt, also sponsored by

A motorcycle show will again be held during the Nodaway County Fair. Registration will take place from 3 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 21, with the bikes on display from 5 to 8 p.m. on the east side of the

square. Awards will be presented at 8 p.m.

There will be six classes in which to enter, American made 1200 cc and below; American made above

1200 cc; American made Touring; Imports 750 cc and below; Imports above 750 cc and Import Touring. First, second and third places will be awarded in each class as well as Best

of Show. The show will be judged by the participants.

The Nodaway County Fair will once again feature Open Exhibits to be on display July 19 - 21 in the Nodaway County Administration Center’s Community Room, 403 North Market, Maryville. The exhibits will be open for the public to view from 5 - 10 pm on Thursday, July 19, from 10 am - 10 pm on Friday, July 20, and Saturday, July 21. The featured category for 2012 will be “Remember When.” There will be five classes in this category: ceramic/glass; clothing/needlework; decorative including home decora-tion, holiday and other; jewelry and other. This is open to all exhibitors. All work submitted must be the exhibitor’s original work and not previously exhibited at a Nodaway County Fair. Each entry must have an entry tag, including the name and ad-dress of the exhibitor, plus the class number. All entries will be received in the Community Room of the Nodaway County Administration Center located at the corner of East Fourth Street and North Market from 9 am - 1 pm, Thursday, July 19. Judging will take place at 2 pm on Thursday. There will be no admittance from 1 - 5 pm during judging and arrang-ing. Youth exhibits for those under 18 will be judged on the merits of each individual entry and not in competition with the 4-H exhibits. Every entry will receive a partici-pation ribbon and judging is on an individual item basis, not compared to others in the class. Blue, red and white ribbons are awarded in every

category. All exhibits must be picked up between noon and 4 pm, Sunday, July 22, at the Administration Cen-ter. The featured category will only be a small part of the exhibits. A few other classes to make entering and judging easier have been added. As a tip, it is recommended to bring address labels to expedite the regis-tration process if there are multiple exhibits from one person.
