D ear Noda Members, July has come and gone and so

have the 2013 NODA Recognized Horse Shows. I was unable to attend again this year because of scheduled vacation, but when I had access to Wi-Fi, I was able to monitor some of the goings on. The weather was pretty ugly Saturday morning. Thank you to all participants and volunteers who worked with show management so that things could run as smoothly as possible. Linda Cooley posted reports from the show on our website and requested that competitors and attendees please forward comments to our show chair, Niki Sackman at [email protected] . Please feel free to send feedback about your show experience, both constructive as well as complimentary. We can’t improve if we don’t know what should be improved, and we want to keep doing what we are doing right. A big thank you goes out to the Recognized Show Committee. We couldn’t do this without them. We so appreciate Karen Eisenhauer and her super crew of volunteers; Mary Armstrong, who took on responsibility for the Sponsors and Advertisers this year; and the Committee, chaired by Niki Sackman, who kept everything together and oversaw all that happened. Thank you also goes to the Officials, John and

Robyn Ambrose, and to Show Secretary Mary Lou Gallagher, who bravely took on the on-line entry process for the first time for NODA’s shows.

Thank you to all our Sponsors and Advertisers. We sincerely appreciate your continued support and, like our volunteers, couldn’t exist as we do without you. We hope that whenever possible, our members support those who support NODA.

Many of you won’t read this letter until you receive it in your mailbox, and by that time our Instructor Certification Workshop #2, Riding, with Bailey Cook at Topline Stables in Aurora, will also have come and gone. I hope that many of you were able to attend as auditors. We included lunch this time with the audit fee, and 4 NODA bucks were worth $20 toward the full cost of the weekend. The last date to pre-register to audit was July26th. When I checked in with the committee around the 22nd, there were 4 auditors signed up. I hope that more people took advantage of this opportunity in the days that followed. The third workshop, Teaching, will be held at LEC Equestrian Center October 26 and 27. It will be conducted by Vickie Hammers O’Neil. We hope you will be able to join us.

We are thrilled to report that we were approved for up to a $500 educational grant from Region 2 to help cover the costs of this second workshop. Adding to the good news, The Dressage Foundation approved a grant to help cover the costs of the third workshop in October. We are very pleased and appreciative that these two organizations are willing to help us fund the Instructor Certification Program. We also thank Bernie Moauro for writing both of the grants. Our Education Committee, Bernie and Marcia Doyle, do such a good job. If you are interested in joining the fun on the Education Committee, please contact Bernie at [email protected] or Marcia at [email protected].

Dee Liebenthal and Rens

Greetings from the President

Please don’t forget about our need for volunteers, especially for the Banquet Committee. One person has stepped up and offered to help, and we are thankful. We still have multiple positions open on the Banquet Committee. Please see more information in this issue of the NODA News and on our website, www.nodarider.org. You may also contact Kathy Kirchner at [email protected].

I am extremely pleased to let everyone know that Niki Sackman, NODA VP and Recognized Show Chair, has been selected by The Dressage Foundation to be their Ohio Representative. As you may remember, not very long ago Niki was awarded a training grant from the Dressage Foundation. Since then she has been working closely with them and was instrumental in NODA adding The Dressage Foundation Sponsored Class to the Recognized Shows. Niki also makes sure we are always on top of what is available through this very wonderful organization. Please watch for the official press release with more information. We are very proud to have Niki as a member of NODA. She is perfect for the assignment. Congratulations!!!

N ODA’s Education Committee is please to announce that the committee has applied for and received a grant from the Dressage

Foundation to help defray the costs of putting on the USDF Instructor/Trainer Certification Program Workshop scheduled for October, 2013. The Autumn workshop is the third in a series coordinated by NODA’s Education Committee in 2013 and will focus on Teaching. The first workshop targeted lunging the horse as well as lunge lessons for the dressage rider and the second focused on riding. All three workshops stress the importance of applying the Pyramid of Training. The Teaching Workshop will take place on October 26 and 27 at Lake Erie College’s, George M. Humphrey Equestrian Center. USDF faculty member Vickie Hammers O’Neil will be providing instruction and critique of the eight participating instructors. Auditors of all levels are welcome and encouraged to attend. Auditors will have the opportunity to ask questions at designated times. The USDF Instructor/Trainer Certification Program, Teaching

Workshop is sponsored by both NODA and Lake Erie College. Those interested in participating in the Teaching Workshop may contact [email protected] NODA’s very active Education Committee, Marcia Doyle and Berni Moauro, also coordinated the well attended USEF Dressage Rider Test Program Clinic at Lake Erie College in February 2013.

The Northern Ohio Dressage Association would like to thank

The Dressage Foundation for their support of this educational program.

The Dressage Foundation’s mission is “to cultivate and provide financial support for the advancement of dressage.” Their programs provide grants to professionals, adult amateurs, young riders, breeders, judges, and entities sponsoring education programs. M ary Armstrong applied for and received a $200 grant from NODA to attend the Instructor Certification Program, Riding

Workshop on August 3 and 4 at Topline Stables. A NODA member since 1984, Mary has scribed, been on the NODA Board as Secretary, and most recently is the 2013 Recognized Show Sponsorship and Advertising Chair. Mary is a long-time rider and supporter of dressage and has earned her USDF Bronze and Silver Medals. She has competed through Grand Prix and says she’s learned a lot from the horses she has ridden and trained along the way. Many were not “dressage horses,” but off-the-track Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses. Not all of the horses were easy, Mary admits, but “they can teach you many lessons and be competitive if you have the right support system. Gaits and a good mind are great to have, but the rider still has to develop the skills necessary to train the horse to be a willing partner and have some fun along the way.” Mary came up through the levels as an adult amateur while running a business and raising a family, so she feels uniquely qualified to teach and encourage other young riders and amateurs juggling a busy and active family,

work or school life. She is eager to provide support and help others develop strategies that make it possible to achieve their goals in the sport of dressage. She is happy to work with students who just enjoy their horse on trails or in the ring, but is also available to help if you simply want to have a pleasant ride or try your hand at Western Dressage. Mary was asked to fill in as the Head Dressage Instructor at Findlay College from March through May of 2013. While she has worked with other adult amateurs along the way, her experience at Findlay College allowed her to provide a long-term plan for young riders at all levels and really focus on each student’s learning style and what they needed to accomplish in order to improve their riding. Some of the students rode Mary’s FEI horse, Gatsby, in order to feel straightness, tempi changes, piaffe and passage. Galvanized in the knowledge that she has something unique to offer the dressage student, Mary is participating in NODA’s USDF Instructor Trainer Certification Program Workshops in order to become a USDF Certified Instructor.

Congratulations to Mary Armstrong on receiving this grant!

NODA is pleased to support professional members in furthering their education.

Hello! Co-editor Mosie Welch here, with her sweet Mare, Sietske (Seat-ska) walking about in the heat and humidity at Grand Haven Stable on Saturday, July 6 getting acclimated for Sietske’s very first Schooling Show on July 7. Her first time off the farm and my first show since 2009. She took care of me and we had a great time. Thanks to all the great volunteers who were so positive in the face of our (MY) show jitters. I should have been this relaxed on show day! We are working on the judges comments and will be back soon. Photo by Denis Osowski.

Dale Lappert questioned including a High Point ribbon in Rider test class since it is not judged by the same criteria and it seems unequal. Not this year.
