Three awards programs have been designed for the 2006 Nobel Biocare World Tour™ confer-ence. Take the opportunity to check out the outstanding clinical documentation of theC&B&I award competition and the fantastic research reports from the poster programs.

Poster Program

For the poster program individuals submit a structured abstract and report of a basic orapplied research project, or a detailed explanation of a clinical technique or technology usedin patient therapy. The accepted entries are displayed on large-scale posters where the findings are presented together with high quality photos documenting the project.

C&B&I awards

The C&B&I competition is divided into three different categories of clinicians. The partici-pants have submitted documentation of the rehabilitation of a patient using treatment pro-cedures involving crowns and bridges and implants with Nobel Biocare products. The reportcan be supported by up to eight digital photographs of the therapy.

Award ceremony

The award ceremony honoring the most outstanding entries is held on Sunday May 21st in the afternoon General Session in the Hiten. Don’t miss the chance to see if the judges sharedyour views on the displayed posters and award entries.

DR. SHOHEI KASUGAI

Dr. Shohei Kasugaireceived his D.D.S andPh.D. degrees from TokyoMedical and DentalUniversity and joined thefaculty in 1983. He is cur-

rently professor of Department of OralImplantology and Regenerative DentalMedicine, graduate school, at Tokyo Medicaland Dental University. He has also held a posi-tion as Director of Dental Implant Clinic,Clinics, Tokyo Medical and Dental UniversityHospital. Dr.Kasugai is a member of AmericanSociety for Bone and Mineral Research,International Association for Dental Research(IADR) and Academy of Osseointegration. Healso holds his memberships in numerous pro-fessional organizations in Japan, including TheJapanese Phamacological Society, JapaneseAssociation for Oral Biology, TheStomatological Society Japan, The JapaneseSociety for Bone and Mineral Matabolism, TheJapanese Society for Tissue Engineering,Japanese Society for Biomaterials and JapaneseAssociation of Regenerative Dentistry. Dr.Kasugai has authored numerous articles inpeer reviewed journals and book chapters. Dr.Kasugai was awarded for Young InvestigatorAward in area of Mineralized Tissue by IADRin 1990, and also awarded by JapaneseAssociation for Oral Biology in 1994.

Dr. Ryuji Hosokawaattended the Faculty ofDentistry of KyushuDental College where hereceived his DDS in 1986.He entered the Graduate

Dr. Roman M. Cibirka,DDS, MS, received hisDDS from the Universityof Detroit-Mercy in 1988and Master’s degree inProsthodontics from the

Dr. Ralf-J. Kohal, born in1961, is a member of theDepartment ofProsthodontics (Chair: J.R.Strub), University HospitalFreiburg, Germany, since

1990. He got his doctoral degree (Dr. Med.Dent.) in 1991. From 1993 – 1995 he spenttwo years as a Visiting Assistant Professor atthe Department of Stomatology, Division ofPeriodontology (Chair: R.G. Caffesse), Universityof Texas, Houston, Texas, USA. Dr. Kohal isBoard Certified in Prosthodontics by the GermanSociety of Prosthodontics and Dental Materials(DGZPW). In 2002, he was awarded docentship(Dr. Med. Dent. Habil.) in Oral Health Sciencesthrough the University of Freiburg. Currently,he is an Associate Professor at the Departmentof Prosthodontics in Freiburg. His main inter-ests are located in the field of implantology(in-vivo and in-vitro investigations regardingguided bone regeneration and the applicationof new implant materials). Dr. Peter Schüpbach stud-ied natural sciences at theFederal Technical HighSchool of Switzerland and received his PhDdegree in 1979. He joined

the Dental Institute of the University Zurich in1981 and was head of a histological researchteam. He had combined teaching and researchwhile in Zurich. He received the PD for «OralBiology and Pathophysiology» from the Facultyof Medicine of the University Zurich in 1996.He is member of several international organi-zations and author of over 50 publications inthe fields of implantology, tissue regenerationand oral microbiology. He is an internationallecturer in implantology. Today he runs hisown service center for microscopic analysis.

DR. BERNARD TOUATI

Dr. Bernard Touati DDS,DSO was Assistant-Professor inProsthodontics at ParisUniversity from 1976

to1985. He is Visiting Professor at theUniversity of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). Dr. Touatiis a Past-president (1997-1998) and life mem-ber of the European Academy of EstheticDentistry and founder-past president of theFrench Society of Esthetic Dentistry. He is alsoa member of the American Academy ofRestorative Dentistry, and the AmericanAcademy of Esthetic Dentistry. He was Co-Program chair of the 2001 international meet-ing of the American Academy of EstheticDentistry (Washington, DC). Dr. Peter S. Wöhrle received his DMD degree«cum laude» and a Masterof Medical Sciences inOral Biology from the

Harvard School of Dental Medicine (1988). Inaddition, Dr. Wöhrle completed the AdvancedEducation Program in Prosthodontics and theAdvanced Education Program in ImplantDentistry at Harvard, and a four-year certifieddental technician program in Switzerland.While at Harvard, he worked with his mentor,Dr. Paul Schnitman, on the groundbreakingconcept of immediate loading of Branemarkimplants. Once in private practice in NewportBeach, California, Dr. Wöhrle applied theseprinciples to the concept of immediate toothreplacement in the aesthetic zone. Morerecently, Dr. Wöhrle developed theNobelPerfect® scalloped margin implant sys-tem. Furthermore, Dr. Wöhrle conceived thedigital wide-screen format that many lecturershave adopted worldwide. He is a member ofthe Academy of Osseointegration, TheEuropean Academy of Osseointegration, theAmerican Academy of Esthetic Dentistry andthe American College of Prosthodontists. Dr. Brien R. Lang receivedhis DDS degree from theUniversity of Michigan,School of Dentistry in 1961and Master of Science inProsthodontics in 1965. He

joined the Michigan faculty in 1965, and wasappointed Chair of Prosthodontics in 1987.He has combined teaching, research and privatepractice while at Michigan. He became Directorof the Nobel Biocare/University of MichiganCenter For Excellence in 1994. He receivedthe «1972 Paul Gibbons Award» presented bythe dental Senior Class at Michigan in recog-nition for his contributions to their education.He received the 1994-Jerome M and DorothySchweitzer Research Award from the GreaterNew York Academy of Prosthodontics, the 1997-Daniel Gordon from the American College ofProsthodontists. He is a past President of theAcademy of Prosthodontics, and the AmericanBoard of Prosthodontics. He is currently Chairof the Editorial Council For The Journal ofProsthetic Dentistry.

DR. JONATHAN L. FERENCZ

Dr. Jonathan Ferencz graduated fromRensselaer PolytechnicInstitute in 1967 and NewYork University College of Dentistry in 1971. He

joined the faculty at NYU in 1972 where he hastaught pre-clinical, undergraduate clinical andpost-doctoral prosthodontics. In 1990, Dr.Ferencz became Clinical Professor of Post-Graduate Prosthodontics and was certified bythe American Board of Prosthodontics in 1998.Active in dental organizations for many years,Dr. Ferencz became a Fellow of the GreaterNew York Academy of Prosthodontics in 1984and served as its President in 1995. He becamea Fellow of the Northeastern GnathologicalSociety in 1988 and its President in 1995 and1996. He has served in many leadership posi-tions in the American College of Prosthodontistsand was its President in 2003. In addition, Dr.Ferencz is a Fellow of the Academy ofProsthodontics, New York Academy of Dentistryand a member of the American Academy ofRestorative Dentistry and the American Academyof Fixed Prosthodontics. In addition to privatepractice and part-time teaching at NYU, Dr.Ferencz has been very active in continuingdental education, having given over 150courses and programs throughout the United States and several other countries.

DR. BALDWIN W.MARCHACK

Dr. Baldwin Marchack is a1971 graduate of theUniversity of SouthernCalifornia, School ofDentistry. In 1989, he

received his MBA from the UCLA GraduateSchool of Management. Dr. Marchack belongsto numerous professional organizations includ-ing the American Prosthodontic Society, theAcademy of Prosthodontics, the Pacific CoastSociety for Prosthodontics, the InternationalCollege of Prosthodontists, the Academy ofOsseointegration, and the American Academyof Esthetic Dentistry. He is a Fellow of theAmerican College of Dentists, a Fellow of theInternational College of Dentists, a Fellow of

the Pierre Fauchard Academy, and a Fellow ofthe Academy of General Dentistry. He presentlyserves on the Executive Council of the PacificCoast Society for Prosthodontics, the ExecutiveCouncil of the American Prosthodontic Society,the Board of Councilors of the USC School ofDentistry, and is Vice-Chair of the EditorialCouncil for the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry.Dr. Marchack is the current President of theAmerican Academy of Esthetic Dentistry andmaintains a private practice in Pasadena,California.

DR. SONIA LEZIY

Dr. Sonia Leziy, DDSreceived her DDS fromMcGill University in 1989and a post-graduatedegree in periodonticsfrom the University of

British Columbia in 1993. Dr. Leziy has recent-ly completed the requirements for the RoyalCollege of Dentists of Canada Fellowship inPeriodontics. She is a member of the BritishColumbia Society of Periodontists, theCanadian Academy of Periodontists, an inter-national member of The American Academy ofPeriodontists and a Fellow of the InternationalCongress of Oral Implantologists. Dr. Parel is a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics, theAmerican andInternational College ofDentists, and is a member

of many professional organizations, includingthe American Dental Association, the Academyof Prosthodontics, and the American Collegeof Prosthodontics. His literature contributionsinclude over 45 scientific articles as principalauthor, and multiple textbook contributions.He was editor and co-author of Esthetics andOsseointegration, a landmark reference sourcefor implant dentistry. He authored his secondbook, The SmiLine System in 1991, andrecently completed a third book, EstheticImplant Restorations. He is past president ofboth the American Academy of MaxillofacialProsthetics and the Academy of Osseointe-gration. Dr. Parel is currently a professor atBaylor College of Dentistry – Texas A&MUniversity System Health Science Center anddirector of the Center of Oral MaxillofacialProsthodontics in the Department of Oral andMaxillofacial Surgery/ Pharmacology.

DR. JÖRG R. STRUB

Prof. Dr. J. R. Strub, bornin 1948, received hisDDS, Dr. Med. Dent., and PhD degrees fromthe University of Zurich,Switzerland. He was a

Visiting Professor of Biomaterials at LouisianaState University and was formerly AssociateProfessor and co-director of the GraduateProgram in Periodontal Prosthetics at theUniversity of Zurich. Since 1988 Dr. Strub has

been Professor and Chair of the Departmentof Prosthodontics at the Albert-LudwigsUniversity in Freiburg, Germany. Dr. Strub ismarried and has one child.

Mr. Hegenbarth receivedhis master dental technol-ogist degree followingextensive experience as adental technician and

ceramist in Germany. He is the owner of ZenLine Dental, an advanced dental laboratorywith an attached post-graduate teaching insti-tute focusing on Premium dental restorationsfor international customers. Zen Line Dental isalso a consultancy for marketing and develop-ment of ceramic products, education andpublishing. He is the developer of the CreativeColor System and the concept for the newNobelRondo – Creative Circle ceramics forAlumina and Zirconia. Dr. Carol A. Lefebvrereceived her DDS in 1983and MS in Prosthodonticsin 1986 from theUniversity of Michigan.Dr. Lefebvre is a Professor

in the Departments of Oral Rehabilitation andOral Biology at the Medical College of GeorgiaSchool of Dentistry and the School of GraduateStudies and is Section Director of RemovableProsthodontics in the Department of OralRehabilitation. She is a recipient of the Schoolof Dentistries Excellence in Teaching andOutstanding Faculty Awards. Dr. Lefebvre is a Diplomate of the American Board ofProsthodontics, a Fellow in the Academy ofProsthodontics and the American College ofProsthodontists, and a member of theAmerican Dental Education Association,American Association of Dental Research andthe International Association of DentalResearch. She is the Editor of The Journal ofProsthetic Dentistry. Dr. Lefebvre was recentlyselected as a 2005–2006 fellow in the ELAM(Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine)program.

DR. PETER K. MOY

Dr. Moy received his den-tal degree from theUniversity of Pittsburgh, a certificate in GeneralPractice Residency fromQueen’s Medical Center in

Honolulu, Hawaii and his certificate in Oraland Maxillofacial Surgery from UCLA Hospitaland Medical Center .He presently limits hispractice to Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery focus-ing primarily in the areas of Osseointegrateddental implants and the reconstruction of theseverely atrophic ridges. He is currently on staffin the departments of Oral and MaxillofacialSurgery as well as Hospital Dentistry at UCLA.He is also the Co-director of the UCLA DentalImplant Center. Dr.Moy has written numerousarticles related to Implant Dentistry andOsseointegration, specifically, on bone graftingand augmentation procedures for the atrophicridges. He has lectured nationally and interna-tionally, most recently at the 98th AnnualMeeting of the American Association of Oraland Maxillofacial Surgeons. He establishedand maintains his private practice in theWestCoast Center for Osseointegration located inBrentwood, California.
