NOAA Collaboration Center Page 1 of 11 1. Background In 2014, NOAA started an evaluation of our current space throughout the SSMC campus looking for potential ways to transform the quality, collaboration, and efficiency of our work environment. Utilizing the GSA Total Workplace Program, NOAA worked with an architecture and space planning firm, Perkins and Will, to examine our existing conditions and operations, survey and interview staff regarding wants and needs, and develop strategies to improve NOAA’s workplace. The analysis resulted in the following 4 major categories for improvement of NOAA’s workplace: More conference/meeting spaces are needed. Space is needed for informal meetings and collaboration. Space is needed for focus and concentration. Meeting space outside of security is needed (like the previous Cafeteria space in SSMC3). In 2015, NOAA decided to start the process of transforming the recently closed Cafeteria space in SSMC3 to create a pilot area where we can test these improvements. To leverage and continue to build upon the developed workplace strategies, NOAA contracted with Perkins and Will to design a transformation of the Cafeteria space. In 2016, NOAA started construction on the transformation of the Cafeteria space to create a new NOAA Collaboration Center. Construction completion is scheduled for Spring of 2017. 2. Design The design of the new space incorporates: 3 Meeting Rooms (each with tables and seating for 14 people) 4 Team Rooms (each with tables and seating ranging from 5 to 10 people) 10 Focus Rooms (each with tables and seating ranging from 1 to 2 people) 9 Systems Furniture Workstations Numerous open seating areas for informal meetings and collaboration All spaces have wireless internet access All Meeting Rooms and Team Rooms have phones and wall monitors for presentations The space has a white noise system to help with acoustic privacy Lockers are provided for short term storage of personal items while using the space Food and beverage consumption is limited to the open seating areas in the front of the space (before entering the secured doors) – countertop, sink, and microwaves are provided

4. Usage The Meeting Rooms and the Team Rooms have been entered into Google Calendar and they can be reserved just like other meeting rooms throughout the campus. Please be considerate of the needs of others and do not schedule regularly recurring meetings in these rooms so that they can be shared and utilized throughout NOAA. Room numbers are as follows: Meeting Room Number 01213 - tables and seating for 14 people Meeting Room Number 01214 - tables and seating for 14 people Meeting Room Number 01215 - tables and seating for 14 people Team Room Number 01212 - tables and seating for 5 people Team Room Number 01302 - tables and seating for 10 people Team Room Number 01303 - tables and seating for 8 people Team Room Number 01304 - tables and seating for 6 people The Focus Rooms, Workstations, and Open Seating Areas are available without reservation (first come-first served basis). The entire space has wireless internet service. Wireless network name is NOAA_GUEST. To access – input your user name (without the @noaa.gov) and password just like you would at your desktop computer. Each Meeting Room and Team Room has a telephone and a wall mounted monitor for displaying presentations. The monitor can be accessed wirelessly (instructions appear on the display when entering the room) or by a cable connection on the wall below the display. More information about the wireless presentation option is provided in Section 5. Lockers are provided across from the area with the Workstations for short term storage of personal items while using the space. The lockers on the lower levels have electrical outlets for charging items like cell phones and laptop computers. Each locker has a resettable keyless combination lock. Instructions for using the keyless locks is provided in Section 5.

6. Design Features 6.1. A modern, open, innovative design approach was utilized to create a variety of inviting, vibrant,

and functional workspaces.

6.2. A color scheme of blues, greens, browns, grays, and whites was selected to highlight NOAA’s work with land, sea, and sky.

6.3. Many of the construction materials utilized contain recycled materials. One of particular note is the dark blue carpet which is made from discarded fishing nets – more details about this can be found here: http://www.interface.com/US/en-US/about/modular-carpet-tile/Net-Effect
