    Construction Hazar !o" #$The following examples are intended to remind workers of the typical construction hazards we see regularly with hopes that everyone will put safety first and correct hazards as they find them.

    HO(SEKEE)*!+ –Not enough can be said about maintaining a clean work area! Keeping your area swept and freefrom debris not only prevents tripping hazards but it makes it easier to perform your work. akesure stored materials are stacked neatly and away from work areas.EXTE!S*O! CO-.S –

    ake sure cord sets have a grounding plug in place before using. "f insulation on cords isdamaged take the cords out of service. #levate extension cords to prevent tripping hazards.

    #ELECT-*CAL )A!ELS –$ll panels and boxes must have a cover in place to prevent electrical shock. %round &ault 'ircuit

    "nterrupters (%&'") should be re*uired on all circuits that will be used for portable power tools.

    SCA00OL.*!+ –#levated working surfaces must be fully planked with toe boards hand rails and mid rails installed.+caffolds must be erected with vertical members resting on a solid base with the scaffold level.Never climb the outside of a scaffold, ladders are re*uired. Never climb a ladder while carryingtools or materials. "nstead use a hoist line.

    LA..E-S –+tep ladders are a ma-or source for construction accidents. ake sure they are used properly andmaintained in good repair. emove broken or damaged ladders from service immediately. Neverlean step ladders against a wall or work surface. Never separate extension ladders. $lways makesure extension ladders are tied off.

    ake sure sand or some other slip resistant material is applied to icy walking surfaces. 'lean upoil and water spills immediately. $nother serious cause of slips is /rolly pollys./ These are smallround ob-ects that can cause a slip when stepped on. Typical ones include0 1elding rod endsstubs from conduit and small diameter pipe.

    L*+HT*!+ –ost construction areas re*uire a minimum of 2 foot candles. "f you are having a hard time seeing

    your work then you need to let someone know and get something done about it. +tairways are acommon problem area and re*uire good lighting.

    E3E )-OTECT*O! –"t is too common to see workers who need eye protection not wearing it. The typical reason isbecause they did not have glasses with them. 1earing safety glasses all the time prevents thissituation. +afety glasses alone are not ade*uate for tasks that create flying particulate matter such

    as grinding or cutting. 1ear a face shield as well.
