Ali Jeffery ~ Traffic

Ali has been living in and working from her campervan for four years. It is a way of living cheaply and maximising the time she can spendon her art. Her 2D work starts off as small doodles in sketchbooks that can be worked on in libraries, cafes etc. Her sculptural work iscreated outside, during the summer months, whilst parked up on a farm or campsite. One of the effects of a transient lifestyle is that itmakes you adaptable and Ali enjoys the fact that she can work just about anywhere. She hopes one day to create a sculpture garden -having such a focus might be the thing required to keep her in one place.

Julian Raphael ~ Homage to Keith Haring

Julian has been homeless in London and now Cambridge for several years. He is currently living in a homeless hostel and is an activemember of the FLACK Editorial Group. Julian dropped out of art college because his life was in free fall at the time. Also he figured thatunlike other professions, an artist hardly needs qualifications, he/she just needs to make art. He has since found this to be naive. Hisinfluences include Salvador Dali and Marcel Duchamp and he cites Mark Rothkoʼs abstractions as shaping his belief in the magic ofpainting. Julianʼs artwork and comedic writing for the page, radio and performance has a growing number of enthusiastic fans.

25 26 27 28 29 30Garth Gratrix ~ There’s no place like homeOver the last 3 years Garth has offered his artistic skills to help people with mental health and learning difficulties, alongside curatingcommunity festivals to enhance the lives of people living in sheltered housing. Garth was recently homeless as a result of a long termrelationship coming to an end. With no fixed abode, Garth began creating installations in vintage leather suitcases, experimenting withboundaries and expectations in a society in which oneʼs status can quickly change. The photographic stills depict new work by Garth ashe captures peopleʼs reminiscences of home whilst interacting with the world around us; whether on a bus, train or walking to pass thetime, Garth experiments with these moments as art.

ghettokid ~ Lisa

ghettokid has a unique, self-taught approach to portraiture. A twist to the seductiveness of his images is that they are created using biros,felt-tip pens and any surface he can find. ghettokid also works on walls, vehicles, canvas, in black and white and in colour. The felt-tipworks are multi-layered built up over several stages.

ghettokid spent many years in London, Manchester and Cambridge sofa-surfing and hustling day to day to survive. He is now settled ina flat where he works on his art and music production.

Liz Whitehorse ~ Gloucester Cathedral

Things went wrong for Liz at the turn of the millennium resulting in six years of homelessness and sofa surfing. She eventually foundrefuge in Gloucester and with the support of the GEAR project was given a space to develop her talents as a poet. Lizʼs visual workbegan as an accompaniment to her writing but she is now working on a series of paintings and drawings in their own right. The pasteldrawing of Gloucester Cathedral is particularly significant for Liz as it reminds her of the solace she found there during her homelessness.
