MiLB.tv • MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/Broadcast MiLB First Pitch TuneIn RHP Oscar De La Cruz (1-1, 1.80 ERA) vs. RHP Justin Ferrell (1-1, 10.57 ERA) Myrtle Beach Pelicans (6-7) vs. Buies Creek Astros (9-4) BIRDS SNAP SKID WITH 6-0 WIN Eddy Marnez homered and Jusn Steele, Dillon Maples and Sco Effross combined to shut out the Buies Creek Astros 6-0 on Tuesday. The game was scoreless unl the boom of the seventh, when Marnez launched a two-run missile into the leſt field bleachers. Maples, who got the Birds out of a two-on, one-out jam in the sixth, yielded to Effross in the eighth. The Indiana right-hander used a double play ground ball and then a strikeout to get out of a two-on, no-out pickle in the eighth. The Birds tacked on four runs in the boom of the eighth to build a 6-0 advantage before Effross pitched a scoreless ninth for his third save. ERROR 404 - NOT FOUND While errors aren’t exactly the most precise way of judging defense for a multude of reasons, Myrtle Beach’s defense has only commied eight errors through the first 13 games of the season - five fewer than second-place Down East. In fact, the Wood Ducks are closer to last place than they are to the Birds. Perhaps a beer way to measure a club’s defense is by defensive efficiency, which measures how many balls put in play (Anything but a home run, strikeout and walk) that are turned into outs. This year, the Pelicans have turned 69.5% of balls hit into play into outs. The figure ranks third in the Carolina League behind Buies Creek (70.8%) and Winston-Salem (70.6%). One other interesng note about Myrtle Beach’s defense is that opponents have tried 27 steals against them, the second-most in the league. The Birds have thrown out 29.6% of base stealers so far, which ranks sixth in the circuit. BIRDS ON THE POND In addion to sample size, past performance and luck, there is one more factor for opmism for Myrtle Beach’s offense: situaonal hing. In fact, the Pelicans’ 4-0 win on Thursday demonstrated this perfectly. The Birds rapped out 11 hits in that contest, but only scored four runs because the club went 2-for-13 with runners in scoring posion. While not great, the Pelicans overall hing line of .221/.291/.331 mysteriously drops to .204/.268/.262 with runners in scoring posion. The good news is that the Pelicans have just 111 plate appearances with runners in scoring posion, and nearly every team across baseball winds up posng similar numbers in those two departments by the end of the season. (NO) PANIC AT THE DISCO Myrtle Beach’s offense has struggled to begin the season, with the Pelicans’ 36 runs are last in the 10-team circuit. Despite Myrtle Beach averaging a paltry 3.2 runs per game, fewer than half of Salem’s league-leading 6.6, there is opmism for the Pelicans’ offense. Right off the bat, the small sample size of 13 games is much too small to make a determinaon of true talent level. Second, most of the Birds offense hails from a Low-A South Bend club that finished among the top three clubs in the 16-team Midwest League in average (.266), on-base percentage (.333), slugging percentage (.374), OPS (.708) and runs (633). The third reason the Birds’ offense should come around relates to luck: Myrtle Beach’s bang average on balls in play (BABIP) is just .275, well below the yearly league average of .300. That number almost certainly will regress back towards the mean as the season wears on, meaning the Pelicans offense should start scoring more runs as that happens. EVERY ROSE HAS ITS THORN Even though he has not drawn a walk so far in the enre season, Ma Rose has been one of the most lethal hiers in the Carolina League. The Palm Bay, Florida nave bashed his third home run of the season in Sunday’s loss to Lynchburg. That mark is ed for second in the league. Rose has averaged one home run every 16.67 at-bats, which places him fourth in the circuit. He has also driven in 10 runs, ranking in a e for fiſth in the league. PELICAN POINTS Dang back to last season, Pelicans reliever Jordan Minch has gone 18 appearances without allowing a run (18.1 IP, 12 H, 15 K, 7 BB). The last me the southpaw surrendered a run was on May 24, 2016... Trent Giambrone’s 11-game on-base streak to begin the season ended with an 0-for-4 performance in Tuesday’s win over Buies Creek... Jusn Steele’s 5.1 scoreless frames marked the first me a Myrtle Beach starter pitching into the sixth inning this year. Only one Pelicans starter has surrendered more than three earned runs in a start this year. The Birds’ rotaon has a 3.34 ERA... Following Wednesday’s rubber match against Buies Creek, the Pelicans begin a four-game series on Thursday at Down East. It will be Myrtle Beach’s first-ever meeng with the Wood Ducks. Myrtle Beach Pelicans (6-7) vs. Buies Creek Astros (9-4)

BIRDS SNAP SKID WITH 6-0 WINEddy Martinez homered and Justin Steele, Dillon Maples and Scott Effross combined to shut out the Buies Creek Astros 6-0 on Tuesday. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the seventh, when Martinez launched a two-run missile into the left field bleachers. Maples, who got the Birds out of a two-on, one-out jam in the sixth, yielded to Effross in the eighth. The Indiana right-hander used a double play ground ball and then a strikeout to get out of a two-on, no-out pickle in the eighth. The Birds tacked on four runs in the bottom of the eighth to build a 6-0 advantage before Effross pitched a scoreless ninth for his third save.

ERROR 404 - NOT FOUNDWhile errors aren’t exactly the most precise way of judging defense for a multitude of reasons, Myrtle Beach’s defense has only committed eight errors through the first 13 games of the season - five fewer than second-place Down East. In fact, the Wood Ducks are closer to last place than they are to the Birds. Perhaps a better way to measure a club’s defense is by defensive efficiency, which measures how many balls put in play (Anything but a home run, strikeout and walk) that are turned into outs. This year, the Pelicans have turned 69.5% of balls hit into play into outs. The figure ranks third in the Carolina League behind Buies Creek (70.8%) and Winston-Salem (70.6%). One other interesting note about Myrtle Beach’s defense is that opponents have tried 27 steals against them, the second-most in the league. The Birds have thrown out 29.6% of base stealers so far, which ranks sixth in the circuit.

BIRDS ON THE PONDIn addition to sample size, past performance and luck, there is one more factor for optimism for Myrtle Beach’s offense: situational hitting. In fact, the Pelicans’ 4-0 win on Thursday demonstrated this perfectly. The Birds rapped out 11 hits in that contest, but only scored four runs because the club went 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position. While not great, the Pelicans overall hitting line of .221/.291/.331 mysteriously drops to .204/.268/.262 with runners in scoring position. The good news is that the Pelicans have just 111 plate appearances with runners in scoring position, and nearly every team across baseball winds up posting similar numbers in those two departments by the end of the season.

(NO) PANIC AT THE DISCOMyrtle Beach’s offense has struggled to begin the season, with the Pelicans’ 36 runs are last in the 10-team circuit. Despite Myrtle Beach averaging a paltry 3.2 runs per game, fewer than half of Salem’s league-leading 6.6, there is optimism for the Pelicans’ offense. Right off the bat, the small sample size of 13 games is much too small to make a determination of true talent level. The third reason the Birds’ offense should come around relates to luck: Myrtle Beach’s batting average on balls in play (BABIP) is just .275, well below the yearly league average of .300. That number almost certainly will regress back towards the mean as the season wears on, meaning the Pelicans offense should start scoring more runs as that happens.

EVERY ROSE HAS ITS THORNEven though he has not drawn a walk so far in the entire season, Matt Rose has been one of the most lethal hitters in the Carolina League. The Palm Bay, Florida native bashed his third home run of the season in Sunday’s loss to Lynchburg. That mark is tied for second in the league. Rose has averaged one home run every 16.67 at-bats, which places him fourth in the circuit. He has also driven in 10 runs, ranking in a tie for fifth in the league.

PELICAN POINTSDating back to last season, Pelicans reliever Jordan Minch has gone 18 appearances without allowing a run (18.1 IP, 12 H, 15 K, 7 BB). ABOUT OSCAR

-De La Cruz grew up as a shortstop, and one that not many teams were interested in signing. However, the Cubs gave him $85,000 to sign and promptly converted him into a pitcher. The Dominican spent his first two seasons essentially learning how to pitch with the DSL Cubs.

-De La Cruz enters the season ranked as the fifth-best prospect in the Chicago Cubs’ organization according to Baseball America, with MLB.com ranking him sixth. Baseball America also says that he has the “Best Curveball” in the Cubs’ system.

2017 SEASON-The right-hander was dominant in his first start of the season, scattering five hits with five strikeouts in 5.0 frames on April 9 at Lynchburg.

2016 SEASON-De La Cruz was named the Midwest League Player of the Week for August 8-14 after firing five hitless innings with six strikeouts at Dayton.

-Did not pitch until a three-inning outing with Mesa on July 13. He was immediately bumped to Eugene for two starts before earning a promotion for his July 30 start with South Bend.

-De La Cruz was tough on all hitters in 2016, limiting righties to a .219 average and .594 OPS. Lefties batted .200 with a .600 OPS against him.

2015 SEASON-De La Cruz was named both a Northwest League Midseason and Year-End All-Star.

-After making a four-inning start to begin the season, De La Cruz went at least five innings in all but one of his final 12 outings.

-De La Cruz was dominant against both lefties (.662 OPS) and righties (.526 OPS).

2014 SEASON-De La Cruz went at least five innings in all but two of his 14 starts. He allowed more than one earned run in an outing just twice as well.

-Lefties posted a .447 OPS in 103 at-bats while righties notched a .567 OPS in 178 at-bats.
