SOME IMPORTANT INFORMATIONAvoid disappointmeot — buy the wool recommended. Buy wisely —

buy enough — the same blend cannot be repeated.

HOW TO CHECK YOUR TENSION—Before I

you commence knitting, check your tensioncarefully; on this depends the success of the

finished article. Take the wool and needlesspecified in the instructions, cast on 20stitches, work 20 rows in plain smooth fabric.

Lightly press work. Check the tension byplacing an inch tape across the stitches, count ,

the exact number of stitches to one inch and i

compare with the tension given in the instruc-1

tions. All tensions are measured over plain

smooth fabric, lightly pressed. If your tension

is too loose, try a size finer needle. If yourtension is too tight, try a size coarser needle.

If there is more than one size of needle re-

commended in the recipe and you alter the

needles to obtain the correct tension in plain

smooth fabric, corresponding alterations mustbe made to the needles throughout the

instructions.

When the instructions read. *'Cast off 2 stitches, K.2” (or similar stitches), the stitch on the

GRAFTING — Plain, smooth fabric only

This is the method by which two pieces

of knitting are joined together to avoid

a seam.

Divide the stitches equally on twoneedles, with the wool at one end andwith the right side of the work facing.

Break off the wool, leaving a length of

several inches, and thread this througha wool needle. * Inserting the woolneedle, as if for knitting, into the first

stitch of the front needle, draw it

through the stitch and slip the latter

off the needle; inserting the needle, as

if for purling, into the second stitch of

the front needle, draw the wool throughand let the stitch remain on the needle,

taking the wool under the front needle

and inserting the wool needle, as if for

purling, into the first stitch of the backneedle, draw the wool through this

stitch and slip the latter off the needle;

inserting the needle as if for knitting,

into the second stitch of the back needle,

draw the wool througfi and let the

stitch remain on the needle; bring the

wool forward under the needle andrepeat from * until all the stitches are

worked off, darning in the end of the

wool securely when finished.
