Gun-wielding induna shoots innocent manWellington Makwakwa

A JOYOUS traditional ceremony suddenly turned into a bloody scene when a local induna apparently discharged his firearm during festivi-ties at a homestead in the Obisane Reserve in KwaDlangezwa last week.

What was supposed to be a blissful

occasion ended in tragedy when a resident was hit by a stray bullet fired by the induna, who reportedly tried to break up a fight which developed during the event.

The injured 40-year-old victim was rushed to the Ngwelezana Hospital in a critical condition.

Mtunzini SAPS spokesperson,

Capt Sbusiso Guma, said the gun-wielding leader was identified soon after the incident, but no arrest has been made until the investigation is completed. ‘An inquiry is ongoing to determine exactly what happened.’

The police have issued a warning to gun owners to familiarise themselves with the Firearm Control Act.

‘Carrying a legally owned firearm in South Africa is permitted if someone has a valid licence. However, the law still protects the rights of citizens to be safe. Gun owners must under-stand what is allowed and what not, especially relating to the handling of firearms in the public domain,’ said Guma.

Court rules in favour of rural based nursesOrrin Singh

THE long, protracted labour dispute between the KZN Department of Health and the KZN Nurses Committee has fi nally come to an end.

The KZN Nurses Commit-tee received a court ruling in its favour in 2013 in which the

Department of Health was ordered to pay nurses working in rural areas a rural allow-ance in terms of an agreement reached.

The dispute affected some 10 000 employees.

The department applied for a judicial review of the 2013 rul-ing in the KZN Labour Court.

Honourable Justice Cele dis-missed the review application and ordered the Department of Health to pay retrospec-tively all employees covered by this agreement.

As it stands, the KZN Depart-ment of Health owes enrolled nurses and nursing assistants in the province millions of

rands in retrospective pay-ment from 1 July 2003 to date.

Chairperson of the KZN Nurses Committee, DK Dladla, said it is an enormous victory for thousands of nurses in the province.

For more information, nurses can contact Dladla on 079 8118997.

Sailing into 2017 with winning maskandi ‘anthem’Wellington Makwakwa

‘Sobulala u-Van Damme namhlanje, olwamanqamu,’

Most South Africans sang this song at midnight on Saturday - sailing into 2017 with a maskandi anthem.

Maskandi giant Mroza Fakude from uMkhuze made history when for the fi rst time, a mas-kandi song received a Song of the Year award, as voted for by the public.

In the last fi ve months,

the phrase ‘Sobulala u-Van Damme’ has been the highest trending expression and mostly used hashtag on vari-ous social networks.

Zululanders sang the words at midnight during festivities at various events such as Ngaba Jive at Iniwe, Last Dance in Rich-ards Bay and Soul Therapy Session in Meet Mekaar. Check all the New Year’s eve entertainment photos in the Zululand Observer Weekend edition. Mroza Fakude

FORMING part of government’s festive season operations, a road-block was held last week on the N2 highway near Jozini.

MEC of Economic Develop-ment Tourism and Environment Affairs, Sihle Zikalala, headed up the operation together with traffi c offi cers, SAPS and other security services personnel.

The MEC’s visit came just one week after the Minister of Trans-port, Dipuo Peters, informed the media that there has been a 17% increase in road fatalities in the country from last year.

The MEC handed out fl yers to the road users as he cautioned them to drive safely and make sure they adhere to the traffi c regulations.

Road users were checked by traffi c offi cers for valid licences as well as unpaid traffi c and speed fi nes.

Breathalyser tests were also conducted during the roadblock.

SAPS members issued drivers with fl yers regarding the reporting

of crime and fi rearms laws. The aim was to search for unlisenced fi rearms, drugs and illicit goods.

The Emergency Rescue Service, the South African Defence Force, Department of Transport and KZN Wild life were also part of the operation.

WHILE the uM-hlathuze Municipal-ity last week issued a strict warning to residents to save every drop of water, a burst pipe in Mee-rensee was spurting water for four days.

By Friday the leak left a long stream along homes on Marlynhoek when

the municipality sent a team out to ad-dress the issue.

‘We are attend-ing to the problem, investigating the cause and deter-mining why the situation was not taken care of since Tuesday,’ said city Communications Manager Mdu Nca-lane on Friday.

‘It is crucial that

the city does not suffer unnecessary water losses during this severe drought.

‘We ask that all residents report any leaks and pipe bursts by calling our call centre on 035 9075000.’

Pleasant surprise at the beachfrontI ENJOY my early morning visits to the beach at Alkantstrand, to smell the ocean and enjoy the scenery.

And so it was with some trepida-tion that I went down on Tuesday morning after the Christmas and Boxing Day crowds had enjoyed their two days in the sun.

I expected to see litter and broken bottles... maybe even a few passed out bodies... lying everywhere.

To my amazement, the car park and beach area had already been cleaned.

There were people working flat out all over the place, sweeping and picking up stuff and placing it neatly in bags.

They must have been there soon after sunrise, along with a host of security personnel who had already gathered for the new day.

I know we often criticise our mu-nicipality, but this time they need a huge round of applause.

I would be proud to show off our beach to any visitor who comes to town.

Not only is the beachfront neat and tidy, we also have the profes-sional lifeguards ensuring our safety as well as the shark nets for those who are scared ‘Jaws’ might make a return.

Well done, one and all!BEACH BUM

Quality teaching the way to goFULL marks to the three local private schools for the top class performances recorded in the IEB matric results - two schools boasting a 100% pass rate with only one failure at the other. This is no doubt, a fi ne refl ection on the quality of edu-cators we have in Zululand.

There must be a lesson in this outcome. While the IEB national pass rate increased to 98.67%, last year’s public

schools’ pass rate dropped from 75.8% to 70.7%.

This is clear evidence that discipline and a committed teaching corps make all the difference. Instead of lower-ing pass marks the Education Department should simply focus on improving the quality of educators and hold all prin-cipals accountable for strict discipline at schools.COBIE THERON

IT was a day to remember for scores of deprived children who were entertained by royalty at Ondini palace last week.

His Majesty King Goodwill Zwelithini and Princess kaMafu hosted the young ones, who enjoyed playing games and receiving gifts.

King Zwelithini thanked the Ulundi Municipality which has supported this annual occasion

since its inception in 2014.Thanking the parents who

brought their children to the function, the king wished blessings upon them and their families.

Among the guests was the mayor of Ulundi, Councillor Ntshangase, who promised that next year they will try to bring all of the children from their mu-nicipality to the event, not only the children living close to the palace.

Perfect beach days at AlkantstrandSea conditions have been excellent over the festive season, and there is always something good going on at Richards Bay’s main beach

When the helicopter is unavailable, the pilot boat ‘Jojosi’ ferries marine pilots between the port and the outer anchorage

It’s always a thrill to see the skill of the chopper crews as the marine pilots are hoisted on and off vessels at the harbour entrance

For those who are patient enough, the dolphin viewing platform offers good rewards

On holiday from Ballito, brothers Benjamin (9) and Christopher (8) Savides had a great time on their body boards in the safe conditions at Alkantstrand Dave Savides

The beautifully elegant passenger liner ‘Silver Cloud’ made a pretty picture at the Small Craft Harbour last weekend

Many an angler has taken the opportunity to launch for a deep sea fi shing trip

Spinning some good cheerWellington Makwakwa

THE festive season is a time for giving and sharing with those in need.

Nqobani ‘Ameniso’ Gumede did exactly that when he spread the spirit of giving to children of Celuku-thula Development Orphanage Home in eSikhaleni.

This well known master of spin provided lunch and entertainment for the kids in celebra-tion of his own birthday, and as part of giving back to his commu-nity.

Apart from all

the delicious meals, the day was packed with entertain-ment which included games such as a jumping castle,

water slides and of course

some face painting.

Monster mamba!

Jaco Dercksen holds onto the green mamba he caughtlast week. The ‘tongs’ he is using to hold the snake areroughly 2m long. He can be contacted on 076 2843413

Kyle Cowan

WATCH out for snakes in the grass, or evensneaking behind the toilet door.

The warning comes after a local snake catcherreceived more calls in the past two weeks thanhe usually does in a month at this timeof year.

A ‘rep selling venom’ lastweek forced one Mtunzinifactory to shut down briefly asworkers dashed for cover.

The massive green mamba, more than two metres long and asthick as a man’s arm, had slithered itsway inside, leaving no doubt a professionalneeded to be summoned.

Jaco Dercksen, who has been catchingsnakes as a ‘hobby’ for the past three years, quickly settled the snafu by snagging the suspect.

‘From the description given to me over thephone I knew it was a green mamba, a snakewhich is known for being very long,’ saidDercksen, a 48 year-old businessman now livingin Mtunzini.

‘I was quite surprised when I saw it – I havecaught longer green mambas, but never one asthick as this. It must have lived somewhere withlots of food.’

After the capture, Dercksen sent the snake offto a laboratory where venom extractions are donebefore the snake is again released in a conduciveenvironment.

‘Venom extraction is extremely important forthe development of anti-venoms.’

Zululand, long considered as snake kingdom, has seen increased snake activity over the pastweeks.

According to Dercksen, the reason is relativelysimple.

‘This time of the year, winter, is commonlyknown as hibernation periods for most snakes. Itis also breeding time for mambas in particular.

‘However, with the late and heavy rains, thesnakes will put off finding a dark spot to curl up.

‘After the rain there is an abundance of frogsmoving around, so the snakes will try and eat asmuch as possible before settling in.’

But while humans may fear snakes, it is thereptiles themselves that are in fact in greaterdanger.

According to Dercksen, many people do notrealise that snakes only just miss the endangeredspecies separation line.

‘In December 2013, I caught 94 Forest cobrasin Mtunzini. The next two years I only caughtthree over the festive seasons.

‘It was this more than anything that made merealise just how serious the problem is facing oursnakes.’

Dercksen, who has been passionate aboutsnakes and other reptiles from a young

age, says he often receives calls fromrural areas.

‘I use those call-outs as anopportunity

to teach people more aboutsnakes.

‘Most people are scared ofsnakes, but one hundred percentof people are absolutely fascinatedby them, if they are safe and containedthat is.

‘Very often, after I catch a snake, peoplewill come up asking questions and wanting totouch it. I have seen an opportunity to teach theimportance of these creatures to others.’

Dercksen also issued a plea to residents, urging them not to kill any snakes.

‘Phone me and send me a picture of thesnake,’ he said. ‘If it’s venomous, I willcome out and take care of it. If it’s nonvenomous, please just take it out of yourhome carefully.’

Farmer donates 800 hay bales to HluhluweIn an exceptional display of generos-

ity, a KZN farmer has come to the aid of his fellow farmers suffering from

the crippling drought.JJ van de Velde, a Nottingham Road

potato and maize farmer donated more than 800 bales of hay to drought-strick-en Hluhluwe farmers.

The hay was delivered on Tuesday, 24 May.

‘As KZN farmers continue to battle with the severe drought, dying livestock and worsening conditions as we move into winter, this donation has come just in time and will hopefully remind others that the drought is far from over and that we need to stand together,’ said Sandy La Marque, CEO of the KZN Agricultural Union (Kwanalu).

Van de Velde said it was while watch-ing a programme on the drought one Sunday evening that he saw and realised just how desperate farmers in some parts of the province were and he decided to help.

‘Most farmers in KZN are feeling the effects of the drought and it has been very difficult for us all, but when I saw the hopeless look on that farmer’s face it struck a chord,’ he said.

‘For the first time in 16 years, I have had a good potato crop and figured that my good fortune could be shared with those who were not so lucky.’

Hluhluwe identifiedVan de Velde contacted Kwanalu, who identified Hluhluwe as a priority area.

Kwanalu has been working closely with AgriSA and local farmers to help relieve the pressure of the drought on farmers in the northern parts of the province.

‘Thousands of animals have already perished.

‘Both commercial and subsistence farmers are desperate for assistance and are currently living from one day to the next, relying on whatever animal fodder is donated,’ La Marque said.

‘We have had some rain and now eve-ryone thinks that the drought and all its problems are over, but it’s not true.

‘We need to continue to pull together and help our fellow farmers around the

WITH the rise of drugs and substance abuse among the youth in eSikha-leni, a local businesswoman believes sport is a powerful tool to combat the problem.

Philanthropist, motivational speaker and entrepreneur Hlengiwe Ntanzi says sport is a great platform to help the youth do something positive.

Ntanzi shared these views when she honoured boys and girls in the area during the Vuyahle sports awards event in eSikhaleni last Tuesday afternoon.

Youngsters were issued with certifi -cates, medals and trophies in various sports, including soccer, netball,

basketball, chess and cricket. These accolades were to motivate

the players to continue participat-ing in sport and other positive after-school activities.

Ntanzi has been supporting these teens fi nancially and as a mentor throughout the year under the Vuyah-le 547 Foundation.

She uses this organisation to infl u-ence positive change in her commu-nity and support those in need.

‘Children are the future and we all have to give them guidance and sup-port.’

Local coaches who dedicate their time to teach children skills in various sports were also rewarded.

Under 13 trophy winners - Samkelo Zulu, Owethu Sokhulu and Qiniso Mnyandu

Under 15 winners - Smilo Mthabela, Lindokuhle Mthabela and Sihle Dlamini

Some of the best players acknowledged were

Minenhle Gumede and Akhona Nxumalo
