Since the audit, a contamination audit report has been generated, which will be used to inform future education initiatives and recycling program planning. In brief, the report indicates that 8,664 pounds of material was sorted, and, of those items, properly prepared recyclables represented 84 percent by weight and 86 percent by volume. The top five non-conforming materials by weight were trash, wishful recycling (plastic), wishful recycling (metal), problematic preparation (bagged recyclables, items with food residue) and items that could be recycled elsewhere (i.e. electronic waste, polystyrene, household hazardous waste, plastic bags, textiles, yard waste). “While we have a pretty good track record here in East Lansing, there is always room for improvement,” said Environmental Services Administrator Cathy DeShambo. “One of the biggest concerns for us is the wishful recycling; the things people think can be recycled, but can’t. If a resident is unsure about an item, we encourage them to review the City’s curbside recycling guide prior to throwing it in their cart.” Residents can find the City’s curbside recycling guide on page 2 of this publication. City of East Lansing staff recently participated in a joint recycling audit with the City of Lansing, which involved sorting through material recycled by East Lansing and Lansing residents to learn more about the types of incorrect items that are commonly placed in recycling bins.

If a resident is unsure about an item, we encourage them to review the City’s curbside recycling guide prior to throwing it in their cart.”

Residents can find the City’s curbside recycling guide on page 2 of this publication. Happy Recycling in 2020!

Changes to City’s Yard Waste ProgramThe cost of City yard waste bags and stickers has been reduced from $2 to $1.75, effective January 1, 2020. Additionally, the City plans to transition out of selling yard waste bags due to increased costs for the custom bags. Bags will continue to be sold while supplies last, but a new order will not be placed once the City’s current supply runs out.

Community members can find a list of locations where City yard waste bags and stickers can be purchased at www.cityofeastlansing.com/collections. City stickers can be attached to store-bought paper yard waste bags, brush/limb bundles or a rigid, 32-gallon plastic container. More info: www.cityofeastlansing.com/yardwaste.
