Cents head coach moving on up Starting July 1st, Merritt Centennials coach Luke Pierce will be the new head coach of the WHL Kootenay Ice in Cran- brook. Luke has been the head coach and general manager of the Cents since 2009, returning to his hometown and the team he played for & came up through as a child. During his time as coach, Luke brought the team to the playoffs every season, and was named BCHL Interior Conference Coach of the Year at the end of the 2012-13 season. All the best, Luke! Scott Woods Band Fiddling in the key of… Eh? Multiple Canadian fiddle champion Scott Woods & his band will swing back through town this weekend — Sunday, May 31, 7pm at the Civice Centre — as they tour through the Southern BC Inte- rior then head back eastward, ending up in Manitoba in mid-June. Scott is no stranger to Merritt. They brought their musical skills & fiddle ac- robatics to town a couple years back, to the delight of those who took advantage of their performance. Well if you missed it then, don’t miss it this time! This show includes special performances by Cape Breton tenor Tommy Leadbeater, guitar virtuoso Bruce Timmins, and Canadian Open Step Dance Champion Kyle Waymouth. And Scott has great showmanship: lots of laughs, a vast repertoire of fiddle styles & the ability to play his fiddle twisted around like a pretzel. This is not to be missed! Tickets are $25 for adults, $10 for children 6-12, and kids 5 & under are free. Tickets available at Black’s Phar- macy, Baillie House, or call 378-5735 or toll free 1-855-SCOTTWOODS. The event is hosted by Trinity United Church. Disaster Relief Assistance (DRA) approved for Merritt TNRD announced that, as a result of the damages sustained from the storm on Saturday, provincial Disaster Financial As- sistance has been authorized for qualify- ing claimants — such as home owners, residential tenants, small business own- ers, farmers and charitable organizations — who were unable to obtain insurance to cover these disaster-related losses. The areas approved for Disaster Fi- nancial Assistance are: TNRD Electoral Areas E, I, M & N, the Village of Cache Creek, the City of Merritt, the District of Logan Lake, and the Village of Lytton. To be eligible for assistance, the dam- age must be from an event which is unin- surable, including overland flooding and groundwater seepage. Specifically, the disaster events currently eligible for as- sistance is “overland flooding” on May 23, 2015. There is a 90-day deadline for applications, so they must be submitted to Emergency Management BC (EMBC) by August 24, 2015. General info about the Province of BC’s Disaster Financial Assistance Program has been posted on the TNRD website www.tnrd.ca. There were over 100 in atten- dance. Envir. Min. Mary Polak did meet with them and is reported to have said “the province is exploring some ideas to address the concerns”. Back Country Horse- men ‘Rendezvous’ Kelly Allen & her husband Ron Stolp moved to the area 2 years ago. They have been members of Back Country Horse- men of BC for over 13 years, and last year they started a chapter here in Merritt — making 22 chapters province-wide with over 800 members, and growing! June 5-7, they will be holding the An- nual Rendezvous and AGM here in town at the rodeo grounds. Kelly is hoping that people will come out and see what the or- ganization is all about. Day passes will be available at the door on Friday, Saturday & Sunday for $10. There will be lots happen- ing all weekend: AGM, silent auction, 2 cli- nicians (world renown Jay O'Jay who is returning from clinics in Europe & Merrit's own Stefanie Travers), a dinner show, pot luck dinner, singing around the campfire, a dance featuring the Mack Family, cowboy church, hoof & woof, packing competition and a dutch oven dessert competition, also tons of trail riding right out of the rodeo grounds.
