ANNUAL MEETING for Children’s Ministry- by Rebecca Hewitt-NewsoN

Volunteer Training will be Sunday August 18th from 12:15-1:45.This meeting is for all new or returning teachers and volunteers for children’s Sunday School, Nursery, Extended Session, and Children’s Church. NEED FOR THE 2019-2020 Sunday School Year: We are looking for a team of teachers for the 3 and 4 year old Sunday School class. This is a small, but energetic class of children who are excited to learn about God’s love. Curriculum and training will be provided! You just need a willing heart and a love for children.

Women’s Ministry/Hostess Committee - by cHeR Moss

Note in the PocketOur collection for this ministry is ongoing and the need is GREAT for clothing for our Wake County children. We have received a list of current “urgent” needs which will be on display around the church. Please consider these needs as you go about your normal shopping. If many could each contribute a little, we could make a significant contribution to this cause.

Back to School LunchPlans are underway for the “Back to School Lunch” on Sunday, August 25 at 12 noon to coincide with our Backpack Blessing that morning during service. We will offer hotdogs, chips, drinks and dessert. Everyone is welcome but we will ask that you sign your family and guests up so we will have a number for which to prepare. Plan to bring the kids (there just maybe some “Back to school” goodies!) and let’s all wish them a great start to a new school year!

Youth Ministry- by LauReN HubeR

Mark your calendars for the Fall Youth Retreat to Caswell! Sept. 20-22 we will take a group of 6th-12th graders to the beach to learn about Spiritual Rest. In our fast paced world of schedules, competitions, deadlines, and societal expectations, this weekend will focus on what it means to rest. We will need two adult chaperones, please see Rebecca or Lauren if you are interested.

Meet These Millbrookers

The Fuller Family

Alecia and Tripp met at Campbell University and both went on to receive Masters of Divinity at Wake Forest University School of Divinity. They then moved to Redondo Beach, California and Tripp enrolled at Claremont Graduate University. Both Tripp and Alecia worked at The Neighborhood Church in Palos Verdes, CA. Tripp served as the youth minister there for 7 years and Alecia served as the Minister of Education with children and families for 3 years, then became a stay at home mom when daughter Khora was born in 2013 and son Haven born in 2017. Tripp went on to work as the Director of Theology and Humanities for a seminary extension campus the last two years the family was in California.

Elgin (6th grade) loves sports, reading, playing video games, and legos. Khora (Kindergarten) loves swimming, socializing, gymnastics and dancing. Haven (2) loves all things with wheels, laughing and playing with his siblings, and the nursery at Millbrook!

Tripp runs a Podcast called “Homebrewed Christianity” and has been traveling doing speaking engagements while looking for his next step. He has a few offers and possibilities, one of which would take our family on a big adventure to Edinburgh, Scotland. (We will keep the church community updated on this). Tripp loves the Lakers, brewing beer, and coaching Elgin's sports teams. He also made a movie before moving back to NC called "The Road to Edmond."

Alecia loves all things crafty and creative. She loves to paint, knit, make soap and bath products, refinish old furniture when she has the time. She loves working with children and teaches in children’s church at Millbrook.

The family also has two dogs - Pebbles is 15 and Dino is 8 - and a fish named Rainbow Splash.

The family moved back to Raleigh in 2017 and visited Millbrook because of their friendship with the Newson family. (Tripp and Ryan had been in a high school theology reading group as teenagers!) They stayed because they all fell in love with the people. Tripp loves his Sunday school class and Alecia loves getting dressed for worship in quiet while he takes the kids!

Johnny & Nancy Stevens Having recently celebrated fifty years of marriage, Johnny and Nancy Stevens have been members

of Millbrook for almost that long, joining in December of 1970. Johnny has served Millbrook as a

deacon, a Sunday School teacher of upper elementary school children, and Royal Ambassador leader.

He thoroughly enjoyed his two mission trips to Honduras and a mission trip to Mississippi after

Hurricane Katrina. Nancy has served with the RA’s, as Sunday School director, and as a deacon.

High school sweethearts in Virginia, they went on to earn degrees, Nancy at James Madison

University and Duke University, and Johnny at Carson-Newman College. Coming from a family of

educators, Nancy followed their career paths in teaching high school students. Johnny earned his

Master of Divinity at Southeastern Theological Seminary and served in the Navy Reserve as a

chaplain. After considerable thought, he decided to return to the construction industry where he had

worked growing up, becoming a general contractor in new construction and remodeling. One of his

favorite jobs was remodeling the office area at Millbrook and building the pulpits that are used in the

sanctuary each Sunday.

Both Nancy and Johnny are now retired. Johnny has health problems that restrict his activities. They

have three hard-working sons, three lovely daughters-in-law, and four lively grandchildren.

August Birthdays

Letters to MBC Dear Millbrook Baptist Church Family, Thank you all so very much for your lovely cards, calls, texts and emails following my 5-hour back surgery. I’m still healing and using a back brace and walker. My neurosurgeon says this is a six-months recovery operation. So, I would really appreciate continued prayers that my back bones will grow through and correctly attach with the cages, rods and screws. I’m so thankful that as soon as the three herniated disks were removed and the cages inserted, the horrible nerve pinching of the past six months was gone. No more sciatica, neuropathy or radiculopathy!! Blessings to all of you, Dru McClelland Smith
